For sure the castle is not what I was expecting. There is some heavy athmosphere when you step inside… Without the glamour and not like the more modern castles, but has its own character and finally ... I like it

Filarete was an important architect during the renaissance. He projected this beautiful tower as well as the Ca' Granda building. He also wrote a book called "Sforzinda" (recalling the name of Sforza Castle), suggesting a plan for the ideal of city (actually, the map of renaissance Milan you find in a panel in front of this tower is based on his ideal of a city). It was an utopical city, much based on the model of ancient Athens city. Filarete was actively involved in the discussion about the "Vitruvian Man" with Francesco di Giorgio and Leonardo da Vinci. The riddle proposed by Vitruvio a 1000 years earlier, was to discover how to fit a man into a square and a circle at the same time. Only Leonardo accomplished the feat in a brilliant way. All of these architects believed that man was a microcosmo of the macrocosmo, so all the buildings should derive from its shape, limbs and measures. By the way, I am a researcher of renaissance and Leonardo da Vinci, if you would like to know Milan through these lens you can find in airbnb experiences

Sforza Castle (Italian: Castello Sforzesco) is in Milan, northern Italy. It was built in the 15th century by Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan, on the remnants of a 14th-century fortification. Later renovated and enlarged, in the 16th and 17th centuries it was one of the largest citadels in Europe. Extensively rebuilt by Luca Beltrami in 1891–1905, it now houses several of the city's museums and art collections.

Quote: The Bona Tower On the 26th December 1476, the Lord of Milan, Galeazzo Maria Sforza, son of Francesco Sforza and Bianca Maria Visconti, fell victim to a plot and was stabbed to death, causing his wife Bona di Savoia, to move to the safest place within the castle and further fortify it with the addition of a tall tower. The Bona Tower, at the intersection of the north-east and south-east wings allowed for control of the entire building. In addition to a defensive function, the tower was also used as a prison, as is testified to by a door equipped with a spy-hole, which can still be seen today in the stairwell. Damaged by ensuing foreign dominations, the tower was finally restored as part of the works initiated in 1893 by Luca Beltrami, who also raised it and added battlements.

(Translated by Google) The founders of the castle of Sforza were a family of high-ranking aristocrats of the Visconti family, who decided to build a country residence for themselves - a family nest. The spectacular clock on the tower of Sforza Castle, which you immediately pay attention to from afar, was set in the late nineteenth century. the efforts of Luke Beltramy. The clock is quite large and is mounted on the top tier of the main, tallest rectangular castle tower, which is called the Filaret Tower in honor of its architect. The clock tower is located in the central part of the castle's defense barriers and has a height of seventy meters. It is in Filaret Tower that the gate to the castle is located, through which it is possible to enter the castle complex. Returning to the clock on the tower, I would also like to note that it has its own unique name, "the sun of justice." The watch was named after the dial. In designing this watch, Luke Beltramy reflected the motive of the "sun of justice" - one of the Visconti symbols, later adopted by the Sforzes. With this design decision, the architect drew attention to the true creator of the Visconti castle and the subsequent continuity of the Sforza descendants of their symbolism.

An impressive and striking tower that front the Sforza Castle complex. Designed by the Renaissance architect Antonio Averlino, also known as Filarete, the tower features a unique cylindrical shape and is adorned with decorative elements, showcasing the artistic and architectural style of the period. You can enter the grounds through this entrance and either pay to enjoy the museum, or just wander around the extensive grounds for free. There are lots of nice spots to sit and enjoy the surroundings.

Parking is available, but difficult to get hold of. The only pity is that when you stand in front of the main entrance and would like to take pictures, is harassed by some men in the form that they tie a colorful ribbons to the wrist and then want to see then of course money.
