This place was definitely worth the visit, especially if you enjoy the outdoor/floral ideas. You can walk around the grounds for free if you want (which is the best part in my opinion), but you need to pay the fee to go inside the mansion. It is worth it if you are interested in seeing museum quality pieces (gold chalices, paintings, jewerly/crowns, etc). If you get a chance, I highly recommend visiting in the spring at when all your flowers and trees are blooming, as it is uniquely magical how everything comes to life. So much color and calmness.

A hidden DC gem. The gardens are beautiful! We went on a rainy day and I felt transported to England. The Japanese garden is lovely. The museum is fascinating, an impressive collection of Russian art. The museum staff are friendly and very helpful in providing more information and background. A must visit

We absolutely love this place ❤️ In the museum you can see a lot of different things from the era of Catherine II, things were bought at an auction in the Soviet Union. We saw Faberge eggs, cutlery, carpets, paintings, icons, jewelry, crockery and an incredible house museum. Also, in the museum there is a beautiful gardens with various plants, accompanied by architectural structures. The Japanese garden is just amazing. Moreover, the museum has a greenhouse of all exotic plants and most of them are orchids. We will dedicate this place again and again 👍🏻

Really glad we took the time to visit this place on this recent trip to DC. It's really hard to get everything you want to do done when going to DC especially in a 3-day weekend that's why this is been maybe our 5th or sixth time down. But we never seem to run out of stuff to check out and this was one of them. When you go to places like this make sure you take an a guided tour because you really don't get the full experience just walking around and taking in everything yourself. It's really nice to have someone explain the history and the meanings behind a lot of the items and other belongings that are within the mansion. Nice place to also explore the grounds and relax for a bit. Plenty to see and well worth the price of admission.

Such a beautiful place! We thoroughly enjoyed wandering the grounds before taking a guided tour of the house. Our tour guide Paul was so knowledgeable and gave a fun and insightful tour. The French and Russian art and artifacts in the museum are dazzling and the home itself is in such beautiful condition. The temporary Grace Kelly and Dior exhibit was really interesting as well. We loved the estate so much that we decided to become members!

What a delightful estate tucked away in DC! The gardens were absolutely gorgeous in early spring as many plants and flowers were in bloom. Despite coming on Mother's Day, the crowds were manageable, and we didn't feel like we weren't able to spend time enjoying the different gardens as we strolled the grounds. There is an impressive variety of orchids in the greenhouse. There is food available on-site, although we did not partake, as well as some parking. If you're interested in making multiple visits across the year, consider becoming a member (it is tax deductible).

What an interesting and gorgeous place!Absolutely loved it here!! and we were so lucky to have beautiful weather (went here at the end of September) to roam the grounds too. Such an extensive and impressive collection of the Russian arts and items of the Romanov family (largest outside Russia). The staff was very friendly and helpful. We went in the morning (they open at 10) which helped avoid the crowds because it got busier later on, but not bad at all, compared to other places in DC. Gift shop was beautiful and had unique items. The entrance fee was shockingly affordable, especially for a place of this kind. They have student and senior discounts too. Masks are required inside the buildings, but not otherwise.

This was our favorite museum of all the ones we visited in D.C.! The collection of art is impressive, however, we found the grounds and architecture of the house to be the real gem. So much of the property has been kept “original” and it is such a fun trip back in time. The grounds, even in winter, were beautiful and I can only imagine how pretty they are in summer. There is also a gift shop and cafe on site. Highly recommend making the trip!

Such a wonderful Estate! My family came by after lunch and definitely didn’t give ourselves enough time to see everything before it closed. I highly recommend going on a guided tour of the mansion as there are very few signs detailing what items are and why they are part of the collection. The gardens are lovely and I especially enjoyed the Japanese garden but that may be because of the season of my visit. The greenhouses are a bit tight but had a beautiful display of orchids.

This museum and the grounds are beautiful and fascinating! Ms. Merriweather Post lived such an interesting life and her collection is amazing! We're lucky she preserved so many historical items and made arrangements to share them with the public

Loved it you can tour the mansion they have a greenhouse that had orchids and we were able to go to another Museum in the property that had over a thousand years of glass from crystals to glass jars from the Roman ages it was actually spectacular and we enjoyed the cafe they had price was reasonable and the food was excellent I definitely would come back here again cuz it was so hot that I didn't get to go throughout the whole garden they had formal Gardens cutting Gardens that we just touched on the edge even a beautiful Japanese garden with waterfalls we spent almost 4 hours there and we did not go through everything this is definitely a whole day Excursion but then I have to admit I love to take my time looking through all the beautiful antiques and Museum pieces. Even my son-in-law enjoyed it and that says a lot

🤩 Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens is a cultural gem in Washington, D.C. The former home of Marjorie Merriweather Post boasts impressive collections of Russian and French art, as well as stunning gardens. The mansion itself is a masterpiece, offering a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyle of its original owner. Overall, a visit to Hillwood provides a delightful blend of art, history, and natural beauty.

I can't say enough about how amazingly beautiful this place is! Everywhere you look there is something else just amazing. The grounds are gorgeous. We were there the 2nd week in April and there were flowers everywhere. You can see that it will become even better. If you want more flowers-just check out the hothouse orchids. What an amazing collection this woman had...of everything! You could probably come here repeatedly and find something new every time. The house is fascinating and fun to explore.

Marjorie Merryweather Post , the heiress to the Post Empire at 27! She had many adventures and quite a few husbands. She collected many historical artifacts including items that where from the Royal Russian Empire after the Revolution. Amazing conservatory with my favourite flowers, ORCHIDS. Worth the trip when in D.C.

Very beautiful property. The gardens are heaven . They also have a conservatory where you can see more exotic plants . The mansion is luxurious and a piece of history as well. Most of the interior is decorated with Russian artifacts and paintings of different personalities. You will love a visit here and is not pricey

This home was a bit of a hodge podge of artifacts collected from a time before the home was occupied by Marjorie Post. It was confusing for someone who frequents these types of historical mansions. It came off as slightly inauthentic because if you visit other 1800-style mansions, usually you will see how the actual family lived who lived there with as many artifacts as could be curated from the family or from the time period they were actually living in. This one was more like a 1955 episode of hoarders. But hoarders for rich people. The antiques didn't really make sense together in terms of original countries, narratives, and time periods they were all from. So if you don't know this, you could leave really unclear on history. But the gardens were absolutely beautiful!! Especially the little rock garden area. But it is slippery- be careful. When we visited, a lovely woman fell and hurt herself.

A group of us visited this museum. We started out watching a 10 minute film and then proceeded to walk around the grounds. We saw an exhibit of the Roaring 20s (clothes, jewelry, pictures and furniture from that era). We then did a self guided tour of the main museum. It is filled with mementos from Ms. Post's trip to Russia, as well as gifts from India and other countries. There were beautiful Christmas trees in all the rooms. It's an interesting place to visit.

The Hillwood Estate is such a fun experience. The land itself has many different beautiful gardens including a Japanese style one and a greenhouse of orchids. The museum is gorgeous and rife with beautiful art and artifacts - the highlight being their two Imperial Faberge eggs. I went as part of the tanabata festival so they had a lovely koto performance at the great lawn. Definitely recommend checking out their events to attend but it's also worth going even if there's not an event!

Such a hidden gem! Highly recommend a visit to this beautiful house and estate - especially in the spring. The gardens are absolutely stunning. The greenhouse has gorgeous orchid varieties and the Japanese garden has a great water feature. Could easily spend 2-3 hours seeing everything.

The estate has delightful gardens and a greenhouse with gorgeous orchids. The rooms and collections in the mansion bring you back to the times when great wealth was present. Our favorite was the impressive dining room. There is also a gem, a cafe that is surrounded by charming gardens. The service is friendly and the food is outstanding. The tuna was seared to perfection, the grilled chicken was flavorful, and the quiche had a good balance of veggies and cheese, creamy but not too heavy. Overall, you can have a wonderful experience at Hillwood.

Amazing museum & gardens. Not so amazing staff that accused me of taking videos, which was not true. One of the old lady staff was so rude to me. That is why I am giving only 4 stars to this amazing place. There are some paintings by famous painters which were nice. The greenhouse is filled up with so many beautiful orchids. The Japanese garden was so breathtakingly stunning. $15 ($17 on weekends) was well spent. I highly recommend this place to anyone who is interested in decorative arts and gardens. This place is definitely the jewel of Washington D.C.

Lovely and interesting place to visit. In spring/summer it must be even nicer with all the flowers in bloom. The Japanese garden was my favorite. The greenhouse had some orchids that were very fragrant. The mansion is overall very interesting and the guides are very helpful if you have questions. Definitely recommend it.

Hillwood is a lovely, calm oasis in the hubbub of busy Northwest Washington, DC. 25 acres of woodland and formal gardens, including a rose garden and Japenese tea garden. The mansion allows visitors to step into the glittering world of one of America's first wealthy, successful business women and philanthropists as this was the home of Marjorie Merriweather Post, of Post cereals and General Foods. There is a voluntary donation for entry, plenty of parking and a tremendous shop. The Cafe is a welcome retreat for a delicious snack or lunch. Closed Mondays. Open 10 to 5.

Want a great way to spend a day. The home of Marjorie Merriweather Post. The gardens are lovely. Plenty of places to sit and take it all in. The greenhouses are full. I’ve never seen so many orchids on one place. The collections are so interesting. Highly recommend the guided tour. Our guide, Zee Smith was FABULOUS! She brought the rooms to life. Highly recommend! The Grace Kelly exhibit was very nice too.

What a fantastic place to visit. Everything about this place is amazing. Fantastic, courteous, always smiling, very polite staffs. Every building has a story to tell. Definitely checkout the mansion and the greenhouse and the waterfall or just sit outside and enjoy the greenery the whole year round. Don’t forget to check the kitchen within the mansion The place is well-maintained and again, the staffs are just beyond great! We felt so welcomed and we felt like we’re in a different era. Note: do not wear heels. Wear comfortable shoes cause there’s a lot of walking. Wheelchair accessible. Free parking on site. We used our NARM membership to enter for free. Place was not very busy around weekends in dec.

Visited Hillwood with a friend to see it decked out for the holidays. Besides the lovely interior, we particularly enjoyed all the Christmas trees, the dress sculptures, the spectacular orchids and lunch in the restaurant. Highly recommend!

What a lovely estate. Amazing house, great collection of Russian artefacts, especially the porcelain and faberge! Gardens were beautiful. I really recommend it! The only caveat is the cafe, which was disappointing. The food was charmless (where are the cakes, scones, and more homemade items?). The most disappointing considering the calibre of the institution, as well as the ongoing climate and pollution crisis, was the use of lots of disposable plastic (plastic cuttlery, food wrapped in plastic) and lack of attention to sustainability !

This place is beautiful! The staff is very friendly and helpful. There's a short informative film at the visitors center that's on repeat. I highly recommend that new visitors watch the short film prior to proceeding to the museum and gardens. There is an option to do guided tours of the house as well as the gardens. However, you are free to walk the grounds(to include the house) on your own without a guide. You can rent picnic baskets from the visitors center as well as a map that shows you the designated picnic areas! There are plenty of tables and lawn chairs to sit and enjoy your surroundings. You're also welcome to move the chairs around or lay on the lawn (so I was told). I spent about 3 hours here. I would've stayed longer had I known I could have a picnic here, but I would love to come back and have a picnic then. Oh, also, military is free 🙂.

Absolute gem to be explored in DC. Had an excellent tour given by Vee. The mansion is jam packed with ornate treasures that are all artfully displayed. The gardens are beautiful and the cafe had some solid food. Can't wait to visit again.

Historical house with a remarkable collection of Russian art. It also has a beautiful garden. We joined a guided tour which was quite informative. Do not miss orangerie with orchids collection.

It was a beautiful day and we walked around the estate. The flowers were in full bloom. The azaleas were magnificent. Visited the museum and enjoyed all the interesting items. Highly recommend while the flowers are in bloom.

It is unbelievable how much nature and beauty you can find right here in DC and in one location. Find a few hours to go to Hillwood and enjoy its magnificent gardens, indoor collections and the amazing history behind all that. This is not to be missed

  • 5/5 Kaitlin B. 2 years ago on Google
We spent a wonderful day here, so much to see inside the mansion and out! It's rare to see an estate where nearly all of the rooms and houses are open. And such a wonderful orchid collection!

  • 5/5 David D. 10 months ago on Google
Tour the beautiful house & grounds donated by Marjorie Post - heiress for General Foods. Recommend check out the various walking paths in addition to the main house, which is home to Faberge egg! Also many British & Russian Imperial pieces collected during the early rise of Soviet Union. Located just outside of DC center. Google map directions were spot on, keep going - even when you go through residential neighborhood immediately outside of the estate grounds. Parking is fairly limited, but very well organized by the staff. We were met at the gate & separately guided to a specific parking spot by a secondary attendant. Small suggested donation per person is recommended, to help the volunteer staff keep this jewel open for public viewing!

We were there on a rainy day but the estate and gardens were still beautiful. The greenhouse was filled with amazing orchids and the house had helpful staff willing to share interesting information. This would be a 5-star review had we not also attended the tea, which was not a good experience for the $38 per person price. They served each guest one cup of bagged tea. The scones were good but the sandwiches were stale. I’d skip the meal but highly recommend the rest.
