The place itself is gorgeous, but under renovation. To get in, its 3€ and most of the church is blocked off, including the seats and all of the side rooms. The entrance fee just lets you walk around the main room. If you want to go up to the tower its another 5€ and the museum is also an additional cost. I walked through it fairly quick as there was not much to see, and there was a big crowd the whole way

I think the facade looks the best close to sunset. That's when the evening sun shines onto it, illuminating the mosaics on the facade. As for visiting it, I'd recommend buying the tickets in advance. We arrived 30min before opening and ended up waiting for 45min to enter. Definitely visit the Museum as well. You get to visit the terrace and see the original bronze horses.

You can go the fun way visiting this wonderful church by getting a tour and skipping the line or you can wait and wonder the story behind it. I would highly recommend getting a guide. definitely make sure you get to the terrace ( extra 14 euros) for the wonderful view of the clock tower and the square.

This basilica is decorated by mosaic. The glittery yellow ones are 24k gold! The extravagance in building this is unbelievable. The hall is the lowest point in Venice and it is first to get flooded when waters come in. St Mark’s body is also kept in this basilica.

St. Mark's Basilica Venice, the multi-domed church on St. Mark's Square, is one of Venice's main attractions and one of the most spectacular cathedrals in Italy. At St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, you'll get a glimpse of a true embodiment of Venetian aesthetics. St. Mark's Basilica Venice is an iconic symbol of Venice. Originally intended as a private chapel for the Doge, the church has played an important role in the religious and political life of the city over the centuries. The basilica was built to preserve the relics of Saint Mark the Evangelist, which had been stolen in Alexandria, Egypt. St. Mark's Basilica of Venice, also called the "Golden Church", is famous for the dominance of golden mosaics, which are a unique sight in the world of art. Discover the priceless treasures kept in the basilica for the refinement of the mosaics .

3 euro entry and extra 5 to visit the alter and 7 extra to visit the museum itself. Prices are reasonable. Great views, architecture and priceless art work. It was a great experience to walk round and explore the basilica. Would recommend paying for the museum as this allows you upstairs and out onto the balcony for view at marks square and the condition of some of the art work is amazing. Cheap activity and worth a visit. You can book fast track tickets. We went around 11am and there was a long queue but we were in within 30min

This is the largest square in Venice. It’s a very crowded tourist attraction but still I loved being here. The popular St. Mark’s Basilica and the very iconic bell tower stand in this place. The other dominant building here is the Doge’s Palace. All the buildings are very pretty. You need to stand in the middle of this square to really get the feel of the wonderful architecture around you. It’s a very lively and happy place (at least that’s the way I felt being here). Full of activity, iconic buildings and cheerful tourists. It’s a great place to spend a few hours. There are quite a lot of restaurants, cafes and shops here which are nice but expensive (as is the case near any main tourist attraction).

You have 3 attractions in one here. There is the Basilica itself. Then you have to pay extra to see the golden alter screen it is also extra to go up to the Balcony outside and then extra again to visit the Museum. Also it cost extra to get an Audio guide. It is a gorgeous place to see. The mosaics are out of this world. They tell so many stories and the audio guide tells the history of them all. Truly breathtaking. Got the skip the line tickets and they were well worth it as queues can be quite long.

Absolutely breath taking. Treasures like these are what gets me into a cramped airplane. The architecture is very unique. The millions of tiny stones used to make the many many mosaics are mind boggling. It was a bit tricky tacking picks do to how dark it was. I would recommend a low resolution camera. Other than that just enjoy the beautiful sights. Oh and do your self a flavor and read up on the buildings history first. Makes it more interesting when you go in more knowledgeable than everyone else

One of the most amazing buildings I’ve ever seen. So much gold, but in a good way. The mosaics are incredible, on the ceilings, on the floors, everywhere. It’s definitely worthwhile to pay extra to go to the museum so you can go on the roof & get a closeup view of the mosaics.

NOTE: women must wear a long dress or trousers to get in. Short skirts or shorts will be turned away as well as exposed shoulders. PRICES: 3€ to get in , additional 5€ to see the golden jewel slab, 7€ to get upstairs to see the horses Impressive! Most of the artwork at the basilica is mosaic!!! They have some really old choral books in the museum. The view from above is impressive. The whole thing is beautiful!

Well what can i say, it’s worth the hype, it’s worth the queues, it’s just gorgeous and magnificent. I will go out on a limb and say that this is the most magnificent Basilica as per me in Europe (and the list includes Saint Peter’s in Vatican). The church is covered in mosaic and it seems impossible to even imagine how they created the art. The museum along with the galleries give some of the best views in Venice and thus worth going in. If you take Rick Steve’s audioguides then you can easily spend a few hours admiring the glory of this Basilica.

The Patriarchal Cathedral Basilica of Saint Mark (Italian: Basilica Cattedrale Patriarcale di San Marco), commonly known as St Mark's Basilica (Italian: Basilica di San Marco; Venetian: Baxéłega de San Marco), is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Venice, northern Italy. It is the most famous of the city's churches and one of the best known examples of Italo-Byzantine architecture. It lies at the eastern end of the Piazza San Marco, adjacent and connected to the Doge's Palace. Originally it was the chapel of the Doge, and has been the city's cathedral only since 1807, when it became the seat of the Patriarch of Venice, archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Venice, formerly at San Pietro di Castello. The building's structure dates back to the later part of the 11th century, and the most likely influence on its architecture and design is the Hagia Sophia. Much work has gone toward embellishing this, and the famous main façade has an ornamented roofline that is mostly Gothic. The gold ground mosaics that now cover almost all the upper areas of the interior took centuries to complete. In the 13th century the external height of the domes was greatly increased by hollow drums raised on a wooden framework and covered with metal; the original ones are shallower, as can be seen on the inside. This change makes the domes visible from the piazza. Many of its rich artifacts and relics were plundered from Constantinople in the Fourth Crusade in 1204 CE, including many artifacts from the Hagia Sophia. The famous Madonna Nicopeia, also known as the icon of the Virgin Nicopeia, was looted from the Monastery of Stoudios and was one of the city's most precious icons, carried into battle by various Byzantine emperors. The icon was brought to Venice by Enrico Dandolo (d. 1205 CE) and the altar of the Virgin Nicopeia remains in St. Mark's Basilica until today. To the Venetians, the icon was a symbol that God had transferred His blessing from Constantinople to Venice by military conquest. For its opulent design, gold ground mosaics, and its status as a symbol of Venetian wealth and power, from the 11th century on the building has been known by the nickname Chiesa d'Oro (Church of gold). It achieves an Oriental feeling of exoticism, has all the elements of the Venetian style of the Renaissance Art, remains unique, and essentially a product of Italian workers of all sorts.

One of the most important tourist sites in Venice is St. Mark's Basilica, whose ornate Byzantine-inspired façade and domes overlook Piazza San Marco, St. Mark's Square. The building itself is a work of art, with a mix of architectural styles heavily influenced by the Byzantine Empire, showing Venice's long trade connections to the East. Highlights of the vast interior are the brilliant mosaics that line its domes and vaults, and the high altar covered in gold and jewels. The Treasury contains more glittering gold and jewels. For an unforgettable view of St. Mark's Square, the tall campanile and the clock tower, climb to the porch to stand among the iconic horses. Next to the basilica is the Doge's Palace, also filled with priceless masterpieces of Italian art.

A truly stunning example of a mix of Gothic, Romanesque, and Byzantine architecture. Almost a 1000 years old and this structure will still leave you in awe of the mosaic craftsmanship, shimmering gold down from every angle possible. A true gem of Venice, of Italy, and of the human race as a whole. An absolute must visit for those lucky to visit this beautiful city.

The square makes an amazing impression in real life. It is very nicely lit, and the square itself has a very large open space, as in Venice, the streets are narrow. The basilica itself has a lot of decorations and drawings that delight. The whole thing is perfectly preserved and is truly a work of art. I highly recommend seeing it with your own eyes.

Saint Mark's Basilica is beautiful inside and out. The line to go in was fairly long, but I think it was due to covid restrictions. It was worth the wait. This was my second time to Venice and St Mark's, I would do it again in a minute.

Gorgeous. Lots of gold. Stunning. You pay 3€ at the door, 5€ if you want to go see the specific golden alter (we didn’t, it seemed like just a slightly different view) and 7€ if you want to go upstairs on the terraces (we didn’t but would have if it was nicer out, there might be more up there).

Totally worth it even though you have to pay extra 7€ to go up. The Basilic is full of beautiful golden pieces. The 4 horses are just stunning and I did not want to leave and stop contemplating them Be careful if you have a large backpack they will ask you to leave it separately and there is no space for normal backpacks or jacket inside so you will have to carry them

Stunning Basilica. We had to wait in line, but it moved quickly. Price was 3 euro per person to enter, but worth it. So beautiful inside. It was under construction outside and only limited areas you could go inside. We did not buy the museum pass to go upstairs and outside. The have restrictions on clothing to enter (womens shoulders must be covered as an example)

Arguably the most favourite building in Venice, it is always packed. So I joined a night tour and was glad that I did because it gave access to some off limited areas. It was also great that only 2 other groups were there at the same time. So I could really pay attention and learn about the history about the basilica. What a beautiful place. I still can't believe I was walking in it. (July 2022)

This is my top 1 tourist place to go in Venice .Beautiful architecture it’s is absolutely flawless. I went on a tour and I loved the history of the Basilica. I recommend to buy tickets in advance to get in front of the line instead of waiting in the long line like I did. Very beautiful inside too. Tickets are 3€ and kids under 6 are free. Thank you for reading

Stunning! This Basilica is so gorgeous! Such stunning architecture, and a very peaceful atmosphere inside. There was a very long queue to get in however we only waited 20-30 mins as the line does move quickly. You can pay for a fast track however this seems like it is 4 times the price of entry so we didn’t think it was worth it. The entry fee is a mere €3, however you do have to pay an additional fee to go into the other parts of the cathedral. We paid an extra €7 to go to the balcony on top. It had amazing views of St Marks Square and as it was a sunny day, it was very relaxing. You seem to be able to sit there as long as you want so we definitely feel it’s worth while on a sunny day. All the signs are also written in English which is very helpful. It would be better if you could book a slot, instead of waiting outside.

This was my second time visiting the church, and I have to say it left me speechless again. It’s definitely one of the best architectural designs in the world. It really shows you how smart the venetians were back then. Inside the church all the artwork is made up of small mosaic tiles. I believe maybe billions of them were used. It’s 1000 years old so when you walk inside you feel the history. If you visit Venice and don’t go here you’re making a mistake. Hire a guide because they do explain the history, and it makes the world of a difference. Love it, even though it was my second time. I can’t wait to go back. Buy your tickets in advance with a guide. I used the app called get your guide.

This is hands down one of the nicest cathedrals you will ever visit in your life, I’ve been all around the world and see hundreds of churches and this one has always been in my top 3 favourites. I would definitely recommend you see this when in Venice, it would be an absolute shame if you didn’t and I would consider it not even seeing Venice if you didn’t go.

The basilica looks wonderful from the outside. To visit, you have to pay. Inside, there is also a small museum on the first floor, and you can go to the balcony to admire the view of St. Mark's Square from above. This is additionally paid but definitely worth it.

Wow what a beautiful architecture. St Mark's Basilica is one of the famous Basilica, not only in Venice but in the whole world. This church has a lot of historical significance. The construction of this church started in 828. It was made to house the body of ST. Mark, The Apostle brought from Alexandria to who they named protector of the city of Venice. The present Basilica represent Byzantine Style of Architecture . This church is one of the most important religious temple in the city of Venice and one of the top tourist attraction. Really very beautiful and worth visiting if you're in Venice.

The architecture is wonderful. This was our mid destination while walking Venice entirely on foot. The walk was worth every step! Easily you can spend an hour or two without entering into it. There are shops selling gelato and cold drinks (with a high price of course) to help you cool off in the hot weather

Even with scaffolding and ongoing renovation i still recommend it. The outside walls are decorated with marbles of different colors, but extremelly well combined, classic venetian gothic. The interior is lavishly covered in golden mosaic all over the basilica. Really amazing. I also appreciated the floor work of the pavements

Another €5 to go up to the tower, of cause, the view is amazing but the line are just too long! Another entry fees to go in the museum! Very long line also! We may come in winter again to see if the line are manageable?

The way to the most beautiful experiences in Venice, hidden in its narrow streets and fairy-tale gondolas, inevitably leads through the famous St. Mark's Square. Napoleon once described it as "the most beautiful salon in Europe". The Church of Saint Mark in Venice is a beautiful building. I was speechless when I saw her. With its selection of architectural features, including five cupolas, multicolored columns and sparkling mosaics

To preface, I visited in 2016 and it was with a tour group- so, I got to see most of the basilica and did not have to deal with any queues or weird pricing. As far as the basilica itself: stunning!! So much impressive craftsmanship in the building, and the artwork is awe inspiring. I did not go to the top towers, but even through some of the windows there were very impressive views. Of course it was crowded, like most similar areas, but I remember having a great experience because it was not enough to pull me out of the beauty. We even got to see some lower levels and a cell somewhere in the basement I believe. If I were to visit Venice again with my wife I would surely take her here!

Gorgeous church with a beautiful interior. Lines get long quick but move relatively quickly. Fee to enter the basilica, fee to see the gold alter piece in the apse, fee to see the upstairs/museum/rooftop so come prepared to shell out $$$. But I think they are all worth it especially the upper level/museum/rooftop. Free Rick Steves audio tour really opened the place up.

Wow, what a place to visit. Highly recommended. The church/cathedral/basilica is absolutely beautiful. It‘s adorned with riches of gold, precious stones, mosaics, art work and sculptures that will astound you. It has to be on your list of things to see whilst in Venice. A tip is to get a skip the line guided tour, we did and we had no waiting at all and a superb guide that brought what we were seeing alive.

One of the main places to visit when in Venice. I would highly recommend showing up early in the morning during peak season (summer time), to make sure you don’t need to wait in a long queue. I arrived 45 mins before the doors opened, and was the first in line. Tickets are very inexpensive, which are mainly a donation to the Basilica, and the view from the second floor outdoor area gives an amazing view of the entire Square!

Looks beautiful inside however there is an extra 5 euro charge to walk through the back of the church area getting a better view of some of the art. Also there is a 7 euro charge to go to the museum. It would have been nice to include everything as a bundle fee as opposed to paying when you get there. Still a very impressive basilica and probably a must see in Venice so just keep in mind the extra costs if you plan on seeing everything here. I also recommend picking up tickets earlier which will help save you some time when entering

This is one of the most beautiful cathedrals I have ever seen. The sizes and variety of frescoes made in the Byzantine style are impressive. Only the facade can be looked at for hours. I would say that you should allocate a separate day to visit here, or visit here first, and then other important places.

The absolute must see of Venice. A truly beautiful cathedral filled with Byzantine treasures. I strongly recommend getting the Venezia Unica bundle, because the line may take you from 10 to 30 minutes. One thing I didn’t appreciate was the fact that we had to pay extra to see the pala d’ oro and the museum upstairs ( you have to get tickets separately while inside). Yet, the exhibits and general space are so majestic that it’s worth every cent. Make sure not to rush your visit and explore every inch. I would also recommend booking a guide or reading about it before visiting, as there is a lot to take in. My favourite place in Venice.

Egypt in a barrel of pork fat. When the original building burnt down, Venice rebuilt the basilica in its own cosmopolitan image St Mark's Campanile (bell tower). The church was burned in a rebellion in 976, when the populace locked Pietro IV Candiano inside to kill him, and restored or rebuilt in 978. Nothing certain is known of the form of these early churches. From perhaps 1063 the present basilica was constructed. The consecration is variously recorded as being in 1084–85, 1093 (the date most often taken), 1102 and 1117, probably reflecting a series of consecrations of different parts. The size of the church was increased in all directions, especially to the north and south, and the wooden domes replaced by brick, which required thickening such walls as were retained. In 1094 the body considered traditionally to be that of Saint Mark was rediscovered in a pillar by Vitale Faliero, doge at the time. The building also incorporates a low tower (now housing St Mark's Treasure), believed by some to have been part of the original Doge's Palace. The Pala d'Oro ordered from Constantinople was installed on the high altar in 1105. In 1106 the church, and especially its mosaics, were damaged by a serious fire in that part of the city; it is not entirely clear whether any surviving mosaics in the interior predate this, though there is some 11th-century work surviving in the main porch. The main features of the present structure were all in place by then, except for the narthex or porch, and the facade.

Whoever built the Basilica made the impressive masterpiece. The history and architectural details of the Basilica are so impressive, the frescoes and mosaics are extraordinary. Staying in front of the Basilica and watching the details of the incredible beauty of the facade is a privilege. Every time we discover new magnificent details. The Basilica was built in the 9th century as an altar for the remains of St. Mark, whose body was smuggled from Alexandria in a barrel of salted pork. It was built in the form of the Greek Cross. On the façade there are also copies of four bronze horses, kidnapped from Constantinople hippodrome during the conquest of Constantinople in 1204. The originals were exhibited in the museo Marciano Museum inside the church. In the interior of the church there are numerous Venetian fortunes. In the chapel north of the main altar is the icon of Madonna Nicopeia. It is known as Our Lady of Victory. The most famous detail in the Basilica is the Pala d'Oro crypt, in which he was allegedly burial of St. Marko. The interior delights us with a wonderful mosaic. This ancient monument is a masterpiece worthy of admiration.

Tickets purchased in advance is highly recommended. We were granted access at a specified time without queueing. Note: Appropriate clothing when visiting the Basilica is advised. If you have your knees or shoulders showing, you’ll be asked to buy a plastic wrap. Also, visitors with large luggage will not be allowed access; however, luggage can be stored using free lockers located in Ateneo San Basso (Piazzetta dei Leoncini).

One thing you will never run out of in Italy is massive Basilica's. The square surrounding this area is quite active with all sorts of people. Beware of the marauding pigeons, and enjoy the local vendors who provide a lot of good eats and refreshments. Many of the restaurants in this area will have musicians providing serenades to their diners. A great landmark to find your way around Venice.

When you arrive here you have passed through Venice with all its beauty: the basilica is a further beauty that alone would deserve the trip. Beautiful the golden shovel. (Original) Unica. Per fascino e storia. Il mosaico dorato le conferisce un aria bizantina. La moltitudine di persone toglie e oscura l'aspetto spirituale. (Translated by Google) Without question, this is one of the most rewarding destinations in all of Venice! Unfortunately, the church cannot be visited at the moment, but the museum can. Since this is housed in the upper gallery of the church, you also get a good impression of the building from there. You can see the mosaics and even the original quadriga.

(Translated by Google) The queues to get in are quite long but they move very quickly. Entrance to the basilica is free, only inside the entrance to the treasury and tomb of St. The brand costs 3 euros. You can also rent an audio guide in different languages, but unfortunately I did not pay attention to the price. No photos are allowed inside the Basilica. (Original) Kolejki do wejścia są dość długie ale bardzo szybko się przesuwają. Wejście do bazyliki jest darmowe, jedynie wewnątrz wejście do skarbca i grobowca św. Marka kosztuje po 3 euro. This place is very special. In the square at night you can hear any number of orchestra’s playing music that was written today and hundreds of years ago. My wife and I were standing, listening to an orchestra play and as the music swept over us we just started dancing… right there. There is a uniqueness that captures you in this place. It wasn’t long before others were doing the same thing. Which just goes to show you that everyone is ready to dance, they just may need a little encouragement. We are hopeless romantics and Venice… well, Venice is Venice. A few days earlier we were in the Vatican and I took a picture of the Pope, hundreds of years ago, in the exact same spot I was standing in front of St. Mark’s. History is living and breathing from the very stones you stand on. Not hidden behind velvet ropes… every step you take has history attached to it.

Magnificent, brilliant and amazing ! A piece of history and extraordinary architecture. As you enter the building will hear a choir singing and a pipe organ playing. I wasn't sure but i believe the music was a composition of Palestrina or some composer of the Renaissance era transcripted for a cappella choir and organ. You should pay close attention to the exterior of the building and the exquisite details. We visited the upper section and enjoyed the unique view. So don't forget to visit the upper section of Basilica.

This place I liked the most in our visit in Venice, and I really recommend to go up because there are exhibitions there not just the view which just by self worth that 7 € extra.

  • 5/5 Dan 2 years ago on Google
Beautiful. Best seen early morning or just before sunset. Long wait to go inside. Plan ahead if you are planning to visit the inside. They offer a clock tower experience as well which tends to get booked up pretty early. So make sure to pre-book online if you plan to visit

I recommend buying the Basilica AND the museum/horses ticket as the ticket for the Basilica only does not allow you to go upstairs. We paid 6€ each for the 'skip-the-line' tickets including the entrance of the Basilica (3€ each). Adding the 3€ to skip the line was worth it. We then paid 7€ each to enter the museum and horses tour and we also thought it was worth it. The museum allows you to get closer to the ceilings mosaics and this alone is worth the add-on. The views of San Marco square from outside the basilica (balcony) is a nice bonus.

It is called the "golden cathedral" for one reason. It is different from all the other Italian cathedrals and it is beautiful (bizantine style). I suggest to book the visit to skip the line. Take also the visit to the Pala d'oro (a unique very old golden piece of art), it is completely worth it.

Located in the iconic San Marco Square near the Grand Canal in Venice, it is a must visit. The architecture of the building is like no other. It looks majestic any time of the day. Unfortunately when I was there, there was some construction going on to stabilize certain structures. Nonetheless, it looked amazing!

Must visit in Venice. Really historical place with great mosaic floors and intricate walls/ceilings. Might want to get a guide to explain everything around. Paid 3 euros for entry and it may be really crowded at times.

Basilica with a different kind of architecture and doesn't resemble like other churches. It's bit unique the way it looks. Currently some renovation work is going on and so not many people are let inside at same time and for same reason there was big queue to get inside. Fee for getting inside is 3€ and queue is quite long. We didn't have enough time, so didn't go for it.

  • 4/5 Anton G. 1 year ago on Google
This Basilica is gorgeous and I would recommend going in. It is possible to go in for free if you want to stand in a long queue or you can pay a few euros to skip the line. You should note that several areas inside require further payment to see. Like going up. But what you can see in the ”main” area is still fantastic.

Massive! I don't know how else to describe it. A work of art dedicated to Saint Mark. His remains are buried here. Come and see the amazing detailed exterior of the building, and the exquisite hand of art on the interior of the building My favorite hands down, St. Mark's horses! Stunning!

What a history Venice has. We would love to come back. Basilica is amazing!!! You need to take your time to enjoy every corner of this place. The place of God

A very gorgeous basilica that cannot be missed while in Venice. I recommend buying tickets online to skip the big line were everyone is waiting to buy them. Once you enter, just follow the indicators to visit the Basilica. We had our tickets bought for 15:30 pm but we actually got in earlier by half an hour. Really great experience once you go on the roof as well, near the horses that can be seen from the outside.

Beautiful and unique given it remained his original style. The floor is one of its kind and the 8.000m^2 of gold glass mosaics covering the ceiling are something you won’t see anywhere else. Would come again. Crowded. The 5€ to pay the altar are worth it as it’s a particular beautiful piece of art.

A very beautiful basilica indeed! I’ve enjoyed the appearance of the exterior and interior the most. I would highly recommend buying tickets online to skip the line. I wouldn’t miss the roof, as it gave a beautiful view of the Piazza San Marco.

The Real iconic in Venice and if you wish to go inside and go up to the dome I highly recommend to buy ticket in advance there is huge long queue. And one thing that I really like this area is there is a lot of nice restaurants and cafe in this area I truly enjoy the atmosphere and really enjoy the music at the restaurant.

An incredible building! Very impressive architecture and mosaics. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Venice. The costs of going to the alter and the museum are additional to the entry fee.

It is a very magnificent place, full of history and beauty. The building is very special because it has many different styles and relics from many places, especially from Byzantine. It is a bit strange, maybe, to think about how these precious relics, were taken and brought here, but in those times, this was a way to show power and wealth. When you are standing in St. Mark's Square and looking at the basilica, you can really feel this power.
