My husband and I got a small cake for our birthdays since they are close together. We did the chocolate ganache with almond cake and strawberry fruit filling. It was an amazing cake and the price point was actually a bit lower than we anticipated. We will definitely be coming back!

Very cute space! The decor is fun and you can watch the baking happen from the comfort of your table. Obviously McLain’s is doing things right, because there was a line around the dining area when we visited. Both the veggie burrito and special bacon avocado havarti sammy were very tasty. Our coffees were delightful as well, though they got one of our orders wrong. My only other critique is that tables weren’t being cleaned between customers. The place was so busy people claimed tables before employees could get to sanitizing them. Overall, a pleasure. We’ll be back!

Great for a full hot breakfast, quick coffee and pastry, or pre-ordered bakery items. The space itself is adorable. Popular among locals, and even though it's renowned enough to drum up a crowd most days, the line moves fast and food comes up quickly. They also sell cute gifts for bakers, tasty take-and-bake cookie dough, and a few pantry staples.

We used to love this place but it has not scaled well. Came in this morning to get birthday breakfast for my two year old and pick out a special birthday cupcake. They told me they were out of boxes and we could either have the cupcake for here (at 8 am) or they could smash it into a plastic cup. A $5 cupcake. Didn’t offer a discount or anything. I think we will be taking a break from, which is sad because it is where we normally get all of our cakes and cookies from. Major disappointment.

If you want a unique cake design for your event or wedding then I’d suggest going somewhere else. The look of the cake was not like what we detailed with McLain’s (pictures were sent along with notes) and they agreed they could do something very similar for our wedding. Two pictures attached are inspiration pics, and the 3rd is what the cake actually looked like. Giving 2 stars for showing up on time for delivery and because the cake tasted good. However this was not worth the $1K that we spent and I would have preferred they told me they could not meet our expectations.

We came here for breakfast and tried the smothered burrito, market bowl, pecan sticky bun and an almond cream cheese Danish. I highly recommend the smothered burrito and the almond cream cheese Danish. Each of our coffee drinks was delicious. We will be back to try other breakfast items as well as pastries and fresh breads.

Quality ingredients and service. I eat lunch on the go a lot, they’re quick and efficient. Sometimes to go food is sub par but they do a stellar job. Everything is DELICIOUS. Thank you McClains! Eat local! Drink LOCAL!

McLain's is the absolute best. My husband & I go frequently for breakfast dates in KCMO and I've also been to the Overland Park location many times for one-on-one work meetings. They never disappoint! My husband's go-to breakfast order is the Pepperjack Burrito and mine is the Veggie Quiche. Their Lemon Blueberry Scones are incredible, too. We also can't get enough of their cake! We used McLain's cakery for our wedding cake, along with every mini cupcake flavor available for our guests, and everything turned out perfectly. My husband & I still talk about how yummy our cake was even several months later, which was an almond cake with almond frosting. We just recently ordered a lovely birthday cake from them as well, and will continue using them for future events! Their website makes the ordering process super easy, too. You must pick up their little variety box of mini cupcakes next time you visit! You won't regret it. 😋

Having our first granddaughter and found this place.... sent over what I wanted and they made it all so easy.... it came out 100% the way I asked.... she wanted a Grinch theme baby shower and that's what she got!! I will definitely come again with my next needs!!! Thank you all so much! (They told me they wouldn't do the Christmas balls and I was fine with that, hot glue gun later all pretty!!!)

Stopped into McLain on my way back from from my morning walk. The place has customers. They have a wonderful selection . I've tried the danish. This morning, I got the red velvet cupcake. Can't wait to get home and have it with a cup of coffee. The coffer there smells great. I just don't want to walk home with it. Will have to try a visit where I stay for awhile instead of stopping on my walks.

Best Butter Rolls in the City hands down!!! And I'm speaking from experience. These folks were sooo soft and just sweet enough to cure your sugar urge..... The coffee could be better though. Ordered a holiday peppermint flavored latte and it not only tasted bitter but there wasn't any peppermint kick. Very disappointed and wanted to request a refund but I didn't want to be a bother with other customers filling up the small waiting space. Cons: they usually run out of them before noon :-(

My new go to for everything baked. It was so easy to order my items! From the first consultation regarding my custom order (Grace was AWESOME to work with) to picking up my order, everything was smooth sailing. I had an idea of what I wanted theme wise, but execution wise I was as clueless as the next when it came to how to make my order coordinate well. I ordered a dozen custom cookies and a 10” cake. First things first, they are so fairly priced. They may be underselling their talent in my opinion.🤷🏼‍♀️ Not to mention that the artist/designers who completed my order NAILED my inspiration pics. I’ll add those in my review for comparisons sake though the custom ones I got are Pinterest worthy themselves. Incredibly happy with how my order came together and I have no problem recommending McLain’s on Waldo to anyone who will listen!

I ordered custom cookies for my sisters drive by baby shower. They turned out so beautiful and were delicious! The customer service was fantastic and to make the order covid friendly for my event they were able to individually wrap the cookies! I will definitely be ordering from them again!

Ample pastries and delicacies, with great attention to detail and presentation. Set in a lovely neighborhood, and an institution since 1945. Well worth the stop.

It ain't the first time I've eaten here and it won't be the last. I love it. That's all I can say. Quick bite, good food, awesome place, wonderful service. Go try it.

Waited almost 45 min for our drinks because they were busy. Got home and both mine and my partner's food was incorrect. Had to toss. Massive disappointment. Pic related. Not the Farm burrito, has pork on it when specifically declined. I understand being busy and slow, but this is more than that. I'd appreciate an email or call about this. I have been frequenting for a while, but this is frankly pathetic service. Will need reassurance before we return. I'd advise you check ALL your food twice before you leave here.

Hiring McLain's Bakery for our wedding cake (and sheet cakes) was an incredible experience. We went in for a cake tasting where they took the time to explain all of our options, as well as work with us on a plan for number of guests and amount of dessert needed to accommodate. Their cake was amazing! We ordered almond cake with raspberry filling, which was so delicious and can't wait to order through them again for special occasions!

I had an awesome lunch here, the chorizo sweet potato quinoa bowl was perfectly cooked with a runny egg on top. I loved all the fresh veggies mixed with the chorizo, and made for a very filling meal. The Mac and cheese with chicken and pesto was delicious as well. For pastries, we tried their mini pumpkin cheesecake which was off the charts delicious, and the caramel pecan cheesecake, again amazing. The chocolate muffin with espresso whipped cream was very yummy as well and not too sweet. Definitely big enough to share and perfect with tea or coffee. I didn’t try their coffee but they had an extensive drink menu. Their pies looked amazing and they had a large variety like apple, berry, pecan, German chocolate. The service was very friendly and they made us feel very welcome.

Hands down some of the best pastries I have ever had. Moist, delicious, flavorful, not overly sweet. Delectable. Came in from Maryland, made sure to get some mini cupcakes and pastries to go for the drive back. Will be back next time we are in town and highly recommend to friends, family, and anyone in the area.

We decided to do a milk and cookies bar fairly early in our wedding planning process, but still wanted a small cake just for the two of us. I had hoped to find an option that was simple, stunning, and gluten free. McLain’s delivered exactly what I was looking for. It can be hard to find a small wedding cake for a reasonable price, but we were able to get just what we were after with a two-layer 8” cake, which was the perfect size of our cake toppers! Butter rolls are excellent - flaky and buttery with a sweet simple glaze. They are a Christmas tradition in our family! (If you take them home, pop them in the microwave for 15-20 seconds). Coffee is good but expensive. It's $3 for a drip or around $6 or more for a cafe drink. Store is very clean and has a quaint, modern feel with plenty of seating. Like this place a lot!

This review is not fair or meant to be. It is a review of a bakery that serves comfort food. Saying that means a gas company that sells hat sales hats. Can it be criticized for doing something that the company label is the opposite of? I have frequented the bakery and would rate them to be 4.5 out of 5. This attempt to make simple chicken strips didn't turn out well for my order. Looking at the pictures you can see the dark texture of the chicken strips and certain dark spots suggesting the grease was old. When I bit into one strip, there was no taste or no seasoning at all. It appears that someone just used flour and chicken. Which is the minimum requirement to make fried chicken. No salt or pepper. Just plan. So, again. This is not fair to criticize McClain's Bakery a 70-plus-year neighborhood business. Cake ppl doing comfort food. They have done it many times before and are excellent. But, today was an off day for chicken strips. But, The apple danish is divine.

Our wedding cake was amazing! We did cake & cupcakes, and all of our guests loved both flavors. We did chocolate cake with peanut butter buttercream, and vanilla with cream cheese buttercream. Everything was delicious including the gluten free options! They show up on time and make the communication process

We hosted our son's rehearsal dinner here last night here. The event was perfect! Service was great, food was great. Cost was reasonable, especially for all we received. I can't say enough how smoothly this went. Aubrey was great with planning, Olivia was great last night with serving. All the stars aligned last night. Perfect! Thank you for making this event so wonderful and a great memory.

I ordered a dozen custom cookies for a bachelorette party and McClain's knocked it out of the park! Everyone talked about how delicious and beautiful the cookies were for the entire weekend. McClain's was professional and friendly throughout the entire process and priced competitively. I will certainly order from them again in the future.

Love this little neighborhood bakery. While I wish soy was a milk alternative option, that's probably my only critique. After moving from the river market where I had a neighborhood coffee shop and bakery that were both incredibly dog friendly, I am pleased to say I have found my new spot in my new neighborhood. The best part is they are two in one. They not only give great service to humans but also to dogs. I hope they start a punchcard or loyalty system soon as that would be amazing. Nevertheless, still a perfect little spot with a great patio.

Incredibly charming bakery. The overall vibe and decor inside is a beautiful blend of warm yet modern and chic. Also super cool that they have a walk by drive through if you aren't able to stop and order inside. Also the food. Immaculate. I recommend the buttered roll, super soft and chewy and I am not a glaze person but the glaze was amazing and just the right amount of sweet.

We love McLains, it’s a great place to have in our neighborhood, they have great coffee, food and of course baked goods! Their cakes and cupcookies are a go-to to bring to a party! We also just had them do the cake for our wedding and they did such an amazing job, they really captured the overall style we wanted and helped me figure out what I wanted the cake to look like. And of course the tasting with the filling options and cake types was great, it helped us really figure out what we wanted. We ended up doing funfetti with strawberry filling, and it was even more delicious than it looked!

Coffee cake can be flavored? Yes! This was the best coffee cake I’ve ever had! My wife always has coffee cake for breakfast on her birthday and this place was 1000% worth coming from Iowa for.

I ordered my dirty thirty birthday cake from them. I've ordered red velvet cake from bakeries in the past and have been very disappointed. This was not one of those bakeries. This is truly the best red velvet cake I've ever had in my life. I even had to order a holiday cake for the Christmas party from them this year.

McLain's Bakery made all my wedding cake dreams come true!!! It turned out perfectly and we got so many compliments on how delicious and beautiful it was. My husband and I ordered our wedding cake from McLain’s back in June. They did such a great job on our cake! We wanted something very simple and they did a beautiful job! The staff was great during our tasting and we’re very quick to respond with any questions we had! Not to mention how amazing the cake tasted! We are so glad we chose McLain’s for our big day!

Oh my goodness! It was so great to find a true neighborhood bakery with fresh baked goods in its showcases. Since this place was new to me, I decided to try several things; an apple Danish, a sugar cookie with sprinkles, and a cupcake. As a bonus, I had an almond pastry. You talk about flaky, in regards to the almond and apple Danish, my toes curled in my shoes as I bit into it's tender layers. Did I mention that I had heated them up? Dangerous. I only sampled the other items and passed them on to my father since I had a love affair with the previous items. It goes without saying, I will return for more!

Trendy neighborhood bakery offering a great choice of bakery and food items. Indoor and outdoor seating available. A recent Sunday morning visit delivered a delightful experience. The bakery has 5 locations in the Kansas City area. Our food was served as per ordered. Portions were generous and delicious. Staff was friendly and helpful. This will be a place for many future return visits.
