It’s an experience for all those who love Ghibli. You MUST buy tickets in advance, either online (which then show up in an app that you have to download, requiring a Japanese phone number, or you can choose to pick up the ticket at a Lawson) or through a Lawson convenience store. The main building is whimsical inside, but no photos are allowed, which is a massive shame. You’re only allowed to take photos outside. Upon entry, you’re provided with one ticket (per person) that features a random clip of a scene from a Ghibli movie (see photo), which you use as a ticket for the mini film theatre inside the main building. The short films are rotated throughout the year, and currently they have 10 short films. There is also a small exhibit that rotates their display. This ensures people return. There is a small cafe to the side of the main building, with a limited menu to satisfy hunger, along with an ice cream stand to one side. There’s nothing on the menu to cater for those with dietary restrictions, so make sure you bring your own food if you do have concerns in this area.

Loved every bit of this museum. I recommend going during a weekday as it's much less crowded, buy tickets in advance using the Lawson Ticket app online! Admission includes an exclusive short film and the museum is filled with stunning original drawings from Miyazaki. Very much worth the ¥1,000 price. The cafe is pretty average and doesn't have anything special. The gift shop is on the top floor as well as the big cat bus that only small children are allowed to play in. The garden on the roof is the best part cause you can take photos here (no photos allowed inside but anywhere outside is fine)! This place is a must see for any Ghibli fan!

(Translated by Google) If you expect too much, you will be betrayed, so be careful. The hall is small and there are few things to see. It was impressive that the white foreign guests who passed each other complained in English that "there is little to see". The crowded people are crowded in the small hall, and the congestion frequency is amazing (in front of ✳︎ Corona). Should we reduce the number of visitors because it is a reservation system? Especially the restaurant in the hall has to wait for a long time from before noon. If the purpose is a restaurant, you should enter at the same time as the opening. Since the information display in the hall is only written in Japanese, it may be a little unfriendly to foreign tourists. I'd like you to write it in English, but Hayao Miyazaki seems to be obsessed with Japanese notation, so it can't be helped.

If you are a fan of Ghibli, you must come visit here. It is really hard to get the ticket. However, it is totally worth trying hard to get one. It is not a big place to enjoy. Small but overwhelming. You can watch a special Ghibli video for around 15 minutes. You can buy a limited version of Ghibli goods. Also, learning about how anime is being made. Things to learn, things to buy, things to eat, and things to be memorable.

Before you can even make it here, you got to queue up online for the tickets. It is release on the 10th of every month for the next month ahead. Tip : Standby 2 credit cards (do not use debit cards) the min you get into the queue list go the available day and time and just book it! Do not spend too much time “choosing” coz by the time you are done, all the tickets will be sold out. The Museum itself is amazing. It’s like a trip down the memory lane. It build it as close as they can to the movie. No pictures indoor, only outdoor. Once you are in, they don’t chase you out. Take your time to visit the gift shop and also the cafe to have a meal. Climb the spiral steps, take both the special lifts, walk about and have a great time!

The museum is exciting to explore, but is perhaps catered solely towards hardcore Ghibli fans, which is unfortunate for everyone else. Most rooms are decorated simply with sketches and drawings. All text is exclusively Japanese, making it difficult for foreigners to traverse the exhibitions. The food is delicious, but will require a prolonged wait before ordering. I recommend watching the movie, screened only at the museum.

¥1,000 admission; advanced reservation required. Tickets are open for sale two weeks before the actual date. A valid local mobile phone number is required to reserve tickets, which can be a challenge for foreign visitors. Visitors must also display the e-tickets via a specified mobile app (Lawson Ticket). Weekend tickets are sold out very quickly. Always check the official website for schedule before visiting; the museum is closed in November and December for maintenance annually. Must plan ahead to visit! No photos / videos are allowed inside the museum; displays and short film shown are available in Japanese only. Average wait time for the cafe is around 30 - 80 minutes. If you are not a huge fan of Ghibli films this might not be worth the effort...

The Ghibli Museum is simply the most wonderful, magical place. I've visited twice now and the sense of wonder I feel walking around this place never ends! I simply love it 💖💖💖 Photography is prohibited inside the building, which is a good thing because it allows you to be completely in the moment and experience the place with no distractions, however you can take photos outside the building and on the roof! There are various parts of this museum to explore including two permanent exhibitions, one temporary exhibition, a children's play area with a giant Cat Bus, a rooftop garden featuring the famous Laputa Robot and some other wonderful things, a cinema, two shops, a cafe, and lots of little walkways, miniature doors, spiral staircase each with their own little displays, wall art, hidden things to find. It's truly magical! ✨💖👧🏼👧🏻🌸🌳🦋 The cinema shows, on rotation throughout the year, the Ghibli Short films which can only be viewed at either Ghibli Museum or Ghibli Park in Nagoya. These films cannot be viewed anywhere else! I've seen three of them and each one is incredible, beautiful and simply wonderful! There are two shops, one sells a massive range of Ghibli Merchandise, some of it exclusive to the Ghibli Museum... the range is amazing and you'll definitely leave with lots of items to take home! The other shop sells books, including every Ghibli related book available including some I believe you can only get at the Museum, it also sells other books too each one beautiful! There are coin lockers available in the courtyard, they cost ¥100 which is refunded when you unlock and collect your items. There are toilets and baby changing facilities on each floor, and disabled access to all areas via an elevator, except for the roof which is only accessible through a spiral staircase. The staff here are simply wonderful, each one is so friendly, helpful and kind. I was wearing my Ghibli Hat, a hat I've decorated with various Ghibli pins... So many staff members complimented me on it which was lovely and made me feel that the staff really care. There is an on-site Cafe called Straw Hat Cafe, it serves a number of delicious menu items, I'd highly recommend the Blue Sky Ice Cream Soda! It can get a little busy around 12 and 1pm, so perhaps having a slightly early or slightly late lunch is a good idea as you'll have to wait less and it'll be easier to get a table. Tickets must be bought in advance! They sell out fast so make sure you allow yourself a few date options in case your first choice is sold out. If possible, I'd recommend booking the 10am time slot for entry, that way you have all day to wander around and explore the museum, and also it is quieter first thing and gets busier as the day goes on. All in all, this place is a must for any Ghibli fans visiting Japan! You will not be disappointed - it's simply wonderful 💖👧🏼👧🏻🌸🌳✨🐾🐱💎🌊🗻🎨🎶😍💖💖💖

The Ghibli Museum was a beautiful work of art! This museum was full of references to the amazing Ghibli movies, and it was filled with amazing exhibits. Unfortunately, photography was not allowed inside, but all of the displays were truly out of this world. One of the best parts was watching a random short film. We watched A Sumo Wrestler’s Tail, which I highly recommend for its beautiful animation and fun story. Just seeing a glimpse into the filmography of these pieces was incredible. We were also fortunate enough to see some of the emerging cherry blossoms in the neighboring park. Do not miss out on this fabulous museum!

Late post. I visited Ghibli Museum in April 2018, it’s a must go place for Ghibli fans! And even if you only watch a few of their works, it’s still a great place to visit. There’s a short animation screening that changes every few months and I heard it’s only shown in the museum. There’s also souvenir shop and cafe within the vicinity. There’s also yellow Ghibli bus going to the museum from Mitaka station. Though getting the tickets to the museum were not easy and straightforward for foreigners, but it’s worth it! You need to pick a time slot so I think they limit the number of visitors per time slot to avoid over crowding the place. During my visit, there were a lot of people but there was comfortable space between people.

It's good for kids and adults too. You can see old Ghibli movies shots. There is a cafe inside with a limited menu. Recommended to take your own food and drinks. You are allowed to eat and drink only in designated place. You can't take pics inside but you are allowed to click pics outside. It's crowded as we visited on weekends. IMP: they check your ID card and name on your tickets. You can get a bus to mitaka station just outside the play area.

YESSSSS. You gotta go. Bring your friends. Bring your relatives. Bring your dog. Bring your dog's relatives. Doesn't matter if they think "Ghibli" is the name of a dessert-- they will still have a good time. It's 2022, so tickets are only available online, and can be a little tricky to buy. But they're only ¥1000 and you can stay until closing. Magical. I've been at least 7 times. This is normal. Everything is normal. I love Ghibli.

I visited the Ghibli museum with my husband, and it was somewhat enjoyable. It's better to visit in the morning, because our afternoon was reservation was extremely crowded and humid, where the stairs and elevators were usually backed up. There was one exhibit that had a full line-up where we waited over 20 minutes just to see a unique film display. We ended up leaving the line to skip that, along with several other visitors too. I love studio Ghibli and grew up watching a lot of their movies. But overall, the museum catered more towards youths and families. My husband thinks it's a tourist trap, and I think that I would have enjoyed it when I was 15 or more years younger. The museum is 3 floors (4 if you count the rooftop with the robot), and we covered all of it plus, the straw hat cafe within an hour. This included the one time short-film you can watch at the theatre which is a Ghibli museum original. Overall, the museum is cute and there's a gift shop that sells original Ghibli products. The film ticket souvenirs are cute, too. Besides that, I would not visit again unless kids are involved. Definitely a good place for families and die-hard Ghibli studio fans though!

Beautiful museum and a must visit for Ghibli fan!! Do keep in mind that all admission is by advance reservation only. No ticket purchase can be made on the spot. We purchased the tickets online (LAWSON TICKET). Tickets go on sale from 10:00 (Japan time) on the 10th of each month for the following month. We almost couldn't get the tickets because the tickets on certain time of entry were sold out very fast (within minutes).

It was such a treat to visit this place! Oh God, I don't know where to begin.. There is something magical about anything related to Ghibli. The fact that we had the opportunity to book the tickets was amazingly and made the experience extra special! As you know, you need to book tickets 3 months in advance! And we were able to buy them only 2 months before, which was extremely hard. We couldn't take photos inside the exhibitions as it wasn't allowed, but that made it even magical because you can't expect what you'll see.. The museum is 3 floors, 3 exhibitions, 2 shops, a cafe, and a roof that has the robot from the movie Castle in the Sky, which you can reach when climbing a ladder inside a tower covered with plants. There is also a unique, peaceful garden downstairs. You can't enter the museum before your booked time, so make sure to give yourself 3 -4 hours to enjoy all details without rushing it as the museum will close at 5 pm. It was super easy to get to the museum from Mitaka Station. You'll find a bus stop for Ghibli and a themed bus as well (Stop #9). When you're done, don't leave! Explore the peaceful park around the museum, it's has a lake with swan boats, cafes, and more. There is also a near street with vintage clothing shops.

We couldn’t take the photos inside. But it was a fun day. There are many valuable collections that reflect the history of creating Ghibli animation films inside. The museum is a little smaller than we expected but may be this is because of the crowd. Overall, this museum may not be as big as other museums, I was satisfied because I could see the amazing processes of creating ghibli animation films and I could feel how hard they worked for the details of each frame. Just my personal comment, great works only come from hardworking, continuous progresses and concentration.

There’s not much to do, also photos aren’t allowed inside the museum. But maybe some fans would really enjoy the place. It’s a bit hard to appreciate the museum especially with the number of tourists inside since the building itself is a bit smaller than expected. Wish they would add in more character decorated food on their menu as well. Overall, it was an ok experience. But not sure if I can recommend.

Ghibli Museum was a great experience. You can see how the films were made. We went on the weekend so it was extremely crowded. You will have to buy the tickets a week in advance, and they sold out quickly. You are not allowed to take photos in the museum. The only part I didn't enjoy was it was too crowded with many children running around and screaming, which makes it exhausting to navigate. You can only buy drinks from a cafe if you are thirsty, so I recommend bringing your water bottle with you to the museum.

It was amazing to visit the Ghibli museum. It's a childhood thing. Love all the Hayao Miyazaki movies and Joe Hisaishi's music! Getting the ticket was quite a task. Also too bad that you're not allowed to take any pictures inside the museum.

This is my seventh time here and it is invariably wonderful. The experience of watching the short film is terrific; it would be worth coming just for that. The only thing I didn't like this time is the Cafe: the quality of the food, especially sweets, has dramatically declined, and that's a real shame. Still, 5 stars well deserved! WARNING. This place is a real Museum, it's not Disneyland, so all you people who say "there's not much to do, there's not much to see...", well, take a walk!

(Translated by Google) I grew up watching Ghibli, so I've always wanted to come! Corona measures are quite thorough, but instead of asking the visitors to avoid overdoing it, the response was to disinfect the handrails that the visitors touch with a short frequency. There are many exhibitions related to animation, and although the museum is not very large, I enjoyed it for more than 2 hours. The straw hat of the adjacent cafe did not sell alcohol as a measure against corona, but the barley latte was sweet and fragrant.

The museum is quite smaller than expected. There are a lot of drawings and art of Ghibli movies. Some iconic character statues too. We arrived an hour early (according to the Lawson site) but was asked to go in 5 minutes before entry time. Wasn't allow to go inside the museum at first because my name wasn't on the ticket. So, if you asked for a Japanese friend to buy the tickets, make sure to have their ID picture with you. My Japanese friend was out of town doing work so they couldn't pick up my phone call. Had to show some personal conversation (which include purchase receipt email) just to "proof" we were really friends. I was a bit upset because it took half an hour to settle this issue although the physical tickets were in my hand inside the Lawson envelope.

Really cute museum! It’s quite small but the exhibits are so well thought out and detailed. As a Ghibli fan it was so awesome to see so many intricate references and objects placed throughout - even the building itself if so quaintly Ghibli themed; the non-Ghibli fans I went with also found it just as cool. Make sure to catch the exclusive film they show in the theatre, they are currently showing ‘Looking for a Home’ and it’s such a lovely little film. The gift shops are also great with many Ghibli themed souvenirs to take home. All the staff were so lovely and helpful and the overall atmosphere was impeccable. The cafe was also themed in a nice subtle way and the food was good and not overly overpriced! If you have more time do have a walk around the surrounding park, it’s great for a picnic. Buy tickets in advance!! And do note you cannot take pictures inside.

Photos inside not being allowed was the most annoying part, but overall an amazing experience. Definitely worth it. Need to buy tickets in advance they are available at the beginning of the month and sell out quickly. Almost all info about exhibitions was in Japanese so I’d suggest prior research to anticipate any questions. Staff was very nice and helpful.

It was OK. Need to buy tickets in advance, very crowded inside and there is not really that much to see and do so you are stuck slowly moving through rooms in the crowds of people, hard to really appreciate at your own pace. The building itself is interesting and there is a nice selection of original Miyazaki pieces on display, a long with changing exhibitions and a theatre. Overall I would recommend for big fans of Ghibli but probably not that interesting if you have only watched one or 2 films from this studio.

(Translated by Google) I couldn't make a reservation easily, but I finally got it, so I went there for the first time. I checked the access on the homepage and went there with plenty of time, so I decided to walk from Mitaka station. If you walk along the street of Tamagawa Aqueduct, you will arrive in about 20 minutes. As you can see in the picture, there is a gate. If you walk a little, you will find the entrance. There are admission restrictions, so you will be asked to wait until the reserved time. Wait 30 minutes until time ... When I went to the entrance, there were quite a few lines. I made a reservation with Rochike, so I started the app and operated as told. After that, you will receive an admission ticket and a movie viewing ticket. At first, when you enter the first room (on your right) after entering, you will find movies and exhibits from the past. After that, it is an original museum, but it is a short one of about 15 minutes. Go upstairs to the movie sketches and animator's room. It was interesting. In the next room, some ideas and backgrounds of Hayao Miyazaki's work are explained. Go upstairs to the big cat bus for kids. The size is large enough to fit inside. Also, books and CDs are sold in the next room. Next is the sale of souvenirs, such as characters and fairly expensive models. Finally, climb the spiral staircase to the rooftop. The robot that appeared in Laputa stands there! You can almost see the impression in 2 hours. After that, it was said that shooting is strictly prohibited inside the building, and that the rooftop is good from the outside. It's a museum for people to dream, so it might be better to actually see and feel it.

So glad I was able to get tickets to come here. It was very challenging getting tickets here as a foreigner, but there are ways to do it. Tickets must be purchased at least 1-2 months in advance. Pictures are only allowed outside, but I feel that gives you the opportunity to really enjoy the exhibits inside without being on your phone. They have English translations of the exhibits you can ask for as well. The cafe here was good too. I highly recommend doing your research and planning to come here. Also, make sure you walk around the park the museum is in afterwards!

Despite the hard ticket system for overseas, the Ghibli museum should not be missed by Studio Ghibli fans. It’s a great place to know more about animations as well as appreciate the architecture that Miyazaki pictured for the museum. For English speakers, I recommend buying the English guide book for ¥1,000 available at the 1st floor to appreciate the museum more (comes with a picture book and poster) as most words in the museum are in Nihonggo. Also note that no pictures allowed inside, probably to not spoil the inside of the museum. But outside photos are okay.

As a child, I thought of Ghibli's studio as a place of freedom, adventure, and exploration. Today, that pretty much hasn’t changed. Ghibli Studio was made to put guests in another world. Guests can step away from reality for a while and become immersed in a playground of storytelling and fantasy, which is why Ghibli Studio is so popular and no other company has been able to compete with it. This was my first time in the Ghibli museum and the staff was so kind and helpful . I came from Saudi Arabia to see my childhood dream and I’m so happy. There are two staff outside the museum for chick in, I’ll never forget them in my life. Thank you so much.

I was a little nervous as getting tickets was quite stressful and chaotic although I was ecstatic that I was successful in the end. But it was still such a beautiful experience. They were understandably very busy, considering how quickly they sell out. The place was crowded. But, they definitely know how to manage the crowds. We lined up around the corner to get into the building at our scheduled time frame, but we barely had to wait 5 minutes in that line just to get in. The movie that’s included with entry was soooo adorable, I loved every second. & the little film strip tickets they give you for the movie are so cute too, a nice momento. It’s honestly heaven for people who really appreciate Miyazaki’s art. There’s a bus that runs specifically for the museum from Mitaka station. Was so convenient.

The Ghibli Museum is a small but intriguing museum showcasing two permanent exhibitions about Ghibli movies that show stylized scenes from their most well known movies. The second exhibition is a series of rooms designed to show the creation process of Ghibli movies. There are hundreds of images of movie scenes as drawn by the artists plastered on the walls. The theater shows a short animation three times per hour. There is also a cafe serving small food items and drinks, however the food options are not Ghibli styled. You can expect to spend around 1 to 2 hours in the museum. Photography inside the museum is strictly prohibited. You can only take pictures outside which essentially only applies to the iron giant on the roof. Entry into the museum requires buying a ticket in advance. Ticket sales open on the 10th of every month shortly before 10am Japan time.

What an amazing museum! Everything here is themed, from the stained glass windows to the tickets made with pieces of actual 35mm film. Each of the exhibits is interesting and child-friendly, with interactive elements. There aren't English translations, but everything felt pretty self-explanatory and I didn't feel like I missed out on too much. Photos aren't allowed indoors, but there are plenty of photo opportunities outside and with the Laputa robot on the roof. Make sure you get tickets for right when the museum opens at 10am, on a weekday if possible. We were 15 minutes late and just had about an eight-minute wait, but the line looked pretty long when we left around 11:45am.

No walk-ins, only reserved for ticket holders. A great place to visit even if you’re not a Ghibli fan. Get to see behind the scenes of an animation film which was pretty cool. The museum is indoor and we only spent about 3 hours to see the whole museum (including a short 15 mins film).

To improve English skills, this review is written by English. According to COVID-19, The Ghibli Museum had been closed since February 25. But it has finally reopened on September 5. However, it will resume in a different style from normal. the number of Visitors were reduced to avoid closed space, closely ,and Large gathering. Since it is an electronic ticket only, there is no contact. The number of visitors is probably half or less than normal. The line at the time of admission was short, and there were quite a few busy hours at noon.

(Translated by Google) I enjoyed the inside of the building more than I had imagined, with a staying time of 3.5 hours! From the exhibition of moving mechanical devices of the nostalgic Ghibli character, a mini theater of about 15 minutes, a photo spot with the giant soldiers appearing in Laputa, a cute souvenir shop and a bookstore, and a terrace cafe surrounded by nature! Everything was a really fun spot! From Kichijoji Station, it takes about 20 minutes to walk through the park, but there is plenty of nature, and there are cafes, general stores, and second-hand clothing stores around, so I think you can enjoy it somehow! It's a terrace cafe, but there is a product called "wheat latte", which is really delicious, so I definitely want you to drink it!

It was an amazing experience so many small details. a lot of art, i love all the ghibli movies, so i enjoyed it a lot. we spend around 2 hours in there to look at everything. we didn't watch the movie, because it was limited for 82 people so you had to go 30 minutes early to get a seat.

This was simply an amazing experience. They don’t let you take pictures inside, so you need to pay a visit to see the content. There are several sections inside: a movie theater that plays a short film (that you can only see here) every 20 minutes, there is a section where you can see original hand drawings of the team, a permanent exhibition room, a whole room dedicated to the cat bus (play area for kids) and a nice cafe. This is a great visit if you have young kids, or if you’re adults. One of the most calming and wholesome experiences we have had. You just need to book the tickets a month in advance. If you have someone in Japan that can pick up a ticket with your name (you need to show an ID that matches the name on the ticket, otherwise they deny entry) that is the best option. Otherwise you need to use the website and try your luck.

A must if you are a Ghibli fan. Even fans of cinema or art will find joy in this museum. You can explore everything in roughly 2 hours if you watch the movie that comes with your ticket (playtime roughly 15 minutes). Please buy your ticket online in advance! Don't end up like the poot tourists in line behind us who waited 30 minutes in the August heat only to find out they couldn't buy tickets at the museum.

Magical place for Ghibli fans. Ticket is a piece of a movie roll. No English translations, but pictures and other exhibition pieces are worth the visit. Cafe and store very aligned with Museum, but I wish there was more focus on other movies. Park around museum is very beautiful, worth hanging around after. On the way from the station there are many places to eat.

When you go to the scene to see the situation, you may be able to enter the venue in advance. You can not take pictures indoors, so everyone will not stay for a long time, and you can take pictures in the outdoor area. There are a lot of ingenuity in the whole museum, and you will definitely feel very much after seeing Miyazaki's works. Sam Roquet - Review Time & Tips. Studio Ghibli Museum was better than love at first sight, hahaha 😂 for many people (Jokes) I had such a great time here. just didn't want to leave at all. The experience was super amazing, though you are not allow to take pictures inside, that was ok. the museum displayed Miyazaki work beautifully, everything from what we have seen come to live in so many famous animated movie was display in so many different form of art. you really have to visit this place in person and will understand. I still remember going there, I Jump on the train from Shinjuku, and head to Mitaka (Kichijoji station is Closer to the museum than Mitaka station) I walked from the train station in the morning and was able to enjoy a spring day where I able to sit back in a park, right behind the museum, where the local were enjoying morning picnic, and seeing the Sakura bloom. Tip: If I could recommend anything for those who wants to visit. you must buy tickets at lease 90 days before your visit. There is no ticket booth on site. If you are on a low budget and don't want to pay expensive price for the ticket. Jump on your computer, not phone, and go onto Lawson's convenient store website and get tickets through there. first come first served ofcause. I believe the last time I got the ticket it was around 1000-1500 yen. Fyi the website is in Japanese, but Google Chrome or Safari wold usually translate it for you. I did it so you should be ok. (Translated by Google) Very satisfied! !! If you like Ghibli, there are many Kyun points. Stained glass with the motif of Ghibli works is displayed in various places, but you can not only enjoy it in the sunlight during the day, but also see it illuminated by the indoor lamp after the sun goes down. It was different and nice. You can see that the casual glass used in the hall (such as in the toilet) is handmade one by one, and it is also a space where you can feel the unique taste of the same thing. It was one of the factors that made us realize that was carefully created. It's a museum that makes you want to immerse yourself in it, and it's like an exhibit. Not to mention children, there are many points that adults can enjoy. Since it is adjacent to Inokashira Park, you can enjoy the changing nature of the background depending on the season. The short film shown in the hall changes every month, so I would like to go to another month.

Some people may be disappointed if they don't go after keeping in mind that it is an art museum and not an amusement facility where you can meet Totoro. Fantastic. A must go for those who love Hayao Miyazaki movies. A lot of things to explore and to interact. There is no fixed route, so explore is fun. There is also a small but nice playground for kids. Kids love it so always a long queue (like 15min queue for 5min play). One note is that they don’t allow taking pictures or filming inside the building (outside and/or on the roof top is fine). They also present an exclusive short movie. So cute and lovely! I wouldn’t spoil, so go and watch it! The shop is however a bit disappointing. Small and not too many choices. If you want to buy relevant souvenirs, go to Tokyo station first avenue There is a shop with more selections.

Visiting the Ghibli Museum has been a dream come true, and I still can't believe we managed to secure a reservation! This place has been on our bucket list, and it absolutely lived up to our expectations. The museum is a haven of uniqueness and loveliness. Although we couldn't take photos inside, every corner of the museum was a work of art in itself. We were thrilled to find the Catbus plushy and a couple of Susuwatari soot sprites to complete our Totoro plushy family collection. It's an absolute must-visit for any Studio Ghibli fan. The staff, both at the entrance and inside, were incredibly kind and welcoming, which made our experience even more enjoyable. Thank you, Ghibli Museum, for making our visit a memorable one. A must for any fan of Ghibli! The exhibitis in the museum are wonderful and brings back memories of the various Ghibli creations. The building itself is quite stunning inside. There is also an iron to view a short Ghibli animation in the onsite theatre which was quite a great and highly recommended. As a bonus, the ticket stub is also a slide of a Ghibli, which makes for a nice souvenir. The only downside is that photography is not permitted inside the building. Explore the museum inside and outside at your own pace and don’t be afraid to explore with all of your senses! They have two short films only shown at the museum as well as an exhibition space that changes somewhat occasionally. The Straw Hat cafe is very busy but is worth the wait if you are hungry as the dishes and interior as just as magical as the rest of the museum. This museum is a must-visit for the Studio Ghibli fan, and it is an enjoyable experience to walk through the maze-like buildings and explore the various rooms and stairwells. The Saturn Theater in the basement of the museum showed two short films that were a delight to watch, even though I don't understand a word of Japanese. There is also food available in the outside area if you feel like grabbing a bite or drink. Four things to know before you visit: 1. Book your tickets in advance! You cannot purchase your tickets from the museum when you arrive. Plan ahead before you make the trip from the downtown Tokyo area. 2. Photography is only allowed outside the museum, so don't expect to be able to share images of the beautiful artwork and designs inside the main building. 3. There will likely be A LOT of people when you visit. This museum is primarily tight corridors and small rooms, and the gift shop is even more cramped. Try not to visit during peak hours/days if possible. 4. This museum offers guide maps in various languages but all exhibits, rooms, and artwork descriptions are in Japanese, so there may be a bit of a language barrier if your understanding of Japanese is as limited as mine.

There are a number of short films that can be seen in the museum that cannot be found anywhere else (sadly, I only got to see one but it was amazing). One of our highlights from Japan! The Ghibli museum is a must see for fans of any of their films. They have exhibits set up in the form of rooms that look like actual production rooms with drawing tables, hand written notes and animation cells. You get to see and learn the whole animation process from pre production drawings through to finished beautifully colored animation cells. There are interactive animation film projectors and even strobe light animation that brings pictures to life before you. It’s a great walk through with so much to look at and take in. There’s also a cafe to grab a bite. Just be sure to get your tickets a month in advance as the museum only releases tickets a month prior to a visit.

Ok, so where to start on possibly the best museum in Tokyo? Just being able to wander around this place is a dream. Great architecture, and some really thoughtfully designed spaces. No pictures are allowed to be taken of the exhibits, tho so bear that in mind. Exhibits include; Reproduction of Hayao Miyazaki's office, free 5 minute exclusive Ghibli short, tons of artwork from all of the movies and even model reproductions of famous Ghibli kitchens. The gift shop is also rammed with exclusive merchandise, most which you can't get outside of the museum, even In the Studio Ghibli stores. The cafe was a nice experience, there was a wait of about 40 minutes but the food is all organic, from the surrounding areas and excellent for a licensed tie in cafe. If I would have to deduct a star, it would be for the ticket buying process. Tickets have to be purchased months (in our case 3 months) ahead of visiting, and cannot be purchased on the door. We used JTB (from the UK) which was pretty easy, but if you can't make it on the day your tickets are booked, you aren't going as the tickets will be long sold out. Easy enough of a walk from Mitaka station, highly worth a visit.

Planning for the museum began in 1998. Construction started in March 2000. Upon completion, the museum opened on 1 October 2001.[1] Studio Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki designed the museum himself, using storyboards similar to the ones he creates for his films. The design was influenced by European architecture such as the hilltop village of Calcata in Italy. The museum features internal and external spiral staircases built from iron, interior bridges, and balconies stretching throughout the building's height. These stairways lead to exhibits, dead ends, and across bridges.[2] These characteristics are meant to reflect Miyazaki's building designs displayed in his film work.[3] Miyazaki's aim was to make the building itself part of the exhibit,[4] and for the museum to be an uplifting and relaxing experience "that makes you feel more enriched when you leave than when you entered". Photography and video recording is prohibited inside the museum, because the museum is described as a "portal to a storybook world."[3] Hayao Miyazaki's goal was also for people to experience the museum with their own eyes and ears. "Let's get lost together" is the museum's slogan, derived from Hayao Miyazaki's vision for visitors to immerse themselves in his imagination and film work.[3][5] In February 2020, the museum closed for an undisclosed period as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.[6][7] Despite efforts to reopen the Ghilbi Museum on 10 March 2020, the closure was later extended to 28 April.

(Translated by Google) It's an irresistible place for Ghibli lovers. I was impressed by the fact that the admission ticket film is unique and not the same. The short films that can only be seen at this museum are screened on a monthly basis, and the content was very good. I stayed for more than 2 hours when I realized that I was planning to go around quickly. It is a must-visit place for fans of Hayao Miyazaki. You will feel like you are in the world of Miyazaki. You cannot take pictures inside the museum which is fair. You need to get tickets ahead of time. I got mine from Lawson's.

A must-visit spot for any fan of Ghibli films. I just wish they would let people take photos inside! Some parts of the museum such as bits about the development of the films and such are only presented in Japanese, but much of the museum is visual, so accessible to most.

The Ghibli Museum was great to visit in Tokyo all around the famous studios films and their memorable characters. I hadn't watched a huge number of Ghibli films beforehand but still had a really enjoyable experience. The museum was a combination of how the films were made, showcasing animation techniques but also being an interactive insight into the Ghibli universe. There are several rooms that have different themes as well as outdoor spaces that are interesting to explore. There is also a mini cinema which shows a short film which I'd highly recommend going to (the showings are every 15 mins during the day and it's included in your entry ticket price!). We ended up spending about 2 hours at the museum. There is also a cafe and restaurant as well as a couple of gift shops if you want a souvenir. You need to book tickets online (you can pick them up and pay for them from any Lawson store via the electronic terminals). They do get booked up so try and book a couple of weeks in advance if you can. For 1000 Yen per person, the Ghibli museum is well worth a visit if you're in Tokyo!

The Ghibli Museum was fantastic. The exhibits were impressive, and the artists' sense of whimsy was unmistakable. It's particularly suitable for young children. However, reaching there was somewhat difficult. I would suggest taking a short walk from the train station rather than using the bus. The path mostly follows the park and is quite pleasant.

A must-visit for Ghibli fans!! We were extremely excited to visit this museum! You have to purchase the tickets online and collect them from the konbini. You can take a bus to the museum from Kichijoji station. Was a bit disappointed when they told us there we are not allowed to take pictures indoors. Upon checking in, we were given a small film ticket to view a short movie, which is absolutely cute. We get to keep the ticket as a souvenir. At that period, we watched the film Mei and the Kitten Bus in a small theatre. This short movie is only available for viewing at the museum. Hence it is very worth it. There was so much to look at and everything is so cute and pretty. Absolutely loved the stained glass which was all over the place. We loved how detailed they are with all the decorations. It feels like we went into the movies! It is also very crowded. We wanted to have lunch at the cafe but the queue was crazy! The gift shop was also one of the main highlights cause we spent like $300 at the shop getting gifts. The goods are only available at this museum which makes it unique and good as gifts.

A must for Ghibli fans. This is more a place to learn about Ghibli than an attraction. Many displays of movie drawings, explanations on various movies. There is a history of animation as well as a Studio Ghibli short to view. The museum is themed after many of the Ghibli movies, so when you are walking around it has that feel of being in one of the Ghibli movies. First word of warning there is no English translations, everything is in Japanese. Have a way to translate to your preferred language if wanting to understand the display descriptions. Still one of the best experiences I have had in Japan. Getting there is pretty straight forward, you get off the JR train and then catch a bus, to the museum. Also be warned they do not want you taking pictures inside. This is not the same thing that may come up in searching the internet, the Ghibli theme park. The theme park is in a different location. Tickets must be purchased in advance. And they go on sale the month before you are going to visit, so if you plan to go in March, those tickets go on sale in February.

A must visit for ghibli fans. The museum itself is the main attraction. It is playful. Childish. Fun. Colourful. Everything is made from the eyes of children. I loved it. The exhibitions were a little lackluster, but I guess it is because I love the more mainstream movies. Either way we ended up spending 2 hours and just had a fun time.

This is so worth 1000 yen! It's so fascinating inside! If you are a fan you have to make a visit. There's a 15 minute mini movie they play. If you missed it, do NOT feel you missed out. For foreigners like myself. I had to buy tickets online on the English version site. Order your tickets earlier than later. Wait online ahead of time than opening time. The queue can go 10,000+.

Have the buy tickets in advance on their website and they pretty much sell out instantly and I completely understand why. Can't take photos inside the museum but I feel like that adds to the charm of the place, it's very interactive and there is a lot of trust that you treat everything gently. There are lots of things to entertain children and the gift shop has everything you would ever want related to Studio Ghibli. The cafe queue was really long but the food was really nice, especially the fries! Also if you come from Mitaka station (one stop after Kochijoji on the Chuo rapid line), there is a 'catbus' specifically for people to take to the Museum.

You have to get your tickets in advanced and they’re priced reasonably. I do recommend going in the morning as it was less packed. They don’t allow photography inside as it takes away the experience for others. They give you a piece of film upon entry which is cool and inside you’ll experience little features of inspirations for the films and how things come together. There isn’t a lot of things here that’ll make you stay too long but if you’re a fan, it’s quite a magical place to see. They also have a short film you can watch which was cute but honestly isn’t too important.

Must see for Ghibli fans, young and old. The little gift shop has some really lovely items to get for Ghibli lovers. Must visit if you like Ghibli films. I heard tickets sell out far in advance but I was lucky enough to get one pretty close to the date. You get to watch a short film per visit so don't miss out on that as well. People lined up before it was even open, and got a little busy when I got in.

This was a very special experience as a long time Ghibli fan. My partner who has not watched any of the films still enjoyed the experience. The film shown was the cutest thing ever even though we didn't understand the language. I think that you could spend a lot more time here if you could read Japanese, there was a lot of content that we missed. It was still a magical experience and worth the rigmarole of getting tickets!!

An amazing experience that felt like a fever dream. Wonderful place to bring kids especially if they have watched the films. The museum explores how we use images to trick our eyes into thinking they are moving as well as show many wonderful art pieces from the ghibli films. A great experience for anyone who loves the films and want to see them brought to life.

(Translated by Google) I was surprised because the inside is much larger than I had imagined in the photos. I didn't feel the situation from the front so much, so I couldn't fully enjoy it just once. Ghibli's short films are shown on a regular basis, which makes me want to go there again and again. Unfortunately, shooting is prohibited inside. The world view of Ghibli can only be remembered. You can take pictures of the outside and the rooftop, so I would like to visit when the weather is nice. A large robot soldier stands on the roof, and his eyes are lowered to talk to him. Mitaka citizens have a frame where they can get tickets with priority. Also, the explanation of Lawson Ticket's smartphone app is difficult to understand, and it is written as if to carry out procedures such as companion information and ticket distribution after the ticket is reserved, but it is not necessary here. Once you've confirmed that you've made a reservation, all you have to do is show your companion at the entrance.

This is dream come true! You can take a walk along the Sanpo no Doro that leads to the museum. In the autumn, orange and yellow leaves would fall and make it a breathtaking scene. The museum itself is adorable. It’s not too big, so you can probably finish the tour in 1-2 hours. At the workstation of the animators, you can see the original hand sketches for Ghibli movies. Highly recommend

Great little museum with really cool displays! The permanent display has some fascinating machines that create animation through unconventional methods. They have a no photo policy, but this also allows you to really just experience the museum rather than constantly snapping pictures. The Princess Mononoke stained glass doors was a super illegal photo, but it was the only real sign of our favorite Studio Ghibli movie, so I decided to break the no photo rule. I wish they had dedicated space to more of their movies. The kids loved it, though, as well as the adults, and the price was really affordable. Definite recommend!

My family and I visited in November 2019 and had a great time. Exploring the building and grounds was fun in itself, with weird and wonderful architecture and interesting rooms and paths to follow. I feel bad giving this place only three stars since so many people love it but it wasn't really what I expected. It is very similar to the Little Prince museum in Hakone, except the Little Prince museum has a much bigger outdoor area. The Ghibli museum isn't really stroller friendly (and doesn't really look wheelchair friendly either (although there are elevators, so it is doable). We were told to put our stroller in the storage area. I wish I had brought the Ergo baby carrier. Maybe I would have enjoyed it more. Even on a Wednesday it was pretty crowded. The parking lot is currently being used for COVID vaccination, so finding parking was a bit of a pain. On top of that, it was raining. I would recommend going on a sunny day so that you can enjoy the outdoor area as well. It's not a bad museum, I just don't get what all the hype is about 🤷‍♀️ The gift shop is nice, but I don't want to pay just to go to a gift shop.

Very nice place to spend the day with friends or family while enjoying the amazing Ghibli designs and exhibitions. They charge the movie from time to time. The last time I visited it was "Mei and the little Nekobus" movie, it was a very heartwarming story. As kids would enjoy the games and riding the Nekobus, there are other exhibitions that can be equally enjoyable for all ages. You can find a shop inside that has limited items, while you can enjoy the café and other desserts, food stands that are available outside but right next to the museum. I recommend checking all the tiny details at the place, as you might find a surprise around each corner.

Super cute place. Worth the visit. However tickets are hard to get because you have to jump through many hoops to get them...esp for foreigners. Smaller building than I thought it would be and your not allowed to take pictures inside either. There is a large park beside the museum that's nice.

A must to stop for Ghibli fans 🐰 both inside and outside are really nice. Inside the museum, there a little theater where you can watch a short Ghibli movie 🐭 There is a cafe, ☕️ where you can have a stop in the terrace, and the shop sells exclusive goodies you cannot find anywhere else. If the weather is nice, you can enjoy the roof garden and it’s statues 🤖

Highly recommended to anyone that loves Ghibli or animation in general. You have to book the ticket at least one week before, and if it’s the weekend, at least 2 weeks before. You can take pictures outside but no pictures allowed inside the museum.

Official Ghibli museum in Mitaka, Tokyo. You can only get in with reserved tickets (which goes on sale on their website at the end of the month for the next month) so make sure to book. You're not allowed photos for the inside but the outside areas are allowed. Also, strollers are not allowed unless the baby is sleeping on it. Once the baby wakes up, you have to fold it and park it near the entrance (don't leave your valuables in the stroller parking area) One thing for international guests… I didn't see any English descriptions for anything, everything was in Japanese.

A fantastic visit for any Ghibli fan! You MUST get tickets ahead of time online or at a convenient store. The museum seems small, but is surprisingly dense and you can walk through the same area several times and find some new detail each time. No photos allowed (except in some places) and your ticket includes admission for an original short movie you can only see at the museum. Well worth a visit!

  • 4/5 Leon Z. 11 months ago on Google
You would love this place if you are a fan of Ghibli movies. A lot of original drawings and screenplays of movie scenes can be found here. The process of carton movie making is quite interesting. A short movie session is included. Even the museum restricts the numbers of people visiting per day, it’s still quite crowded. And the museum is small but has very unique layout. No photos inside.

  • 5/5 Nicole Emma L. 11 months ago on Google
I absolutely loved the museum. It was such a treat as a Ghibli fan. The exhibits are mostly of the art processes of the films. The gift shop was fun and magical. They screen a short film that changes every month or so, be sure to catch that! Also pictures inside the museum aren’t allowed. FYI: The tickets had to be booked a month in advance online and it took me 40 minutes to enter on the day itself as the website kept crashing so be prepared. There are limited time slots per day.

This is an absolutely amazing museum about animation. Especially if you like the year 2000 animate from Japan. You will be very familiar with the series and cartoon characters. The ticket from Ghibli Museum is very unique. Unfortunately, I can't take any photos inside the museum but recommend you go by yourself to experience it.

I don't speak Japanese, and I haven't seen any Ghibli movies (yet), but this was a very cool place to visit nonetheless. The artwork is, of course, excellent, but getting to see the rooms showing animation tools and reference books and such was very interesting.

  • 5/5 Sharon D. 9 months ago on Google
Absolutely stunning... no photography allowed inside, so nothing can prepare you for the magic of this place. The building itself is amazing, the timber, stain glass windows, the architecture, the gardens... but the artwork, history and displays are phenomenal. I thoroughly recommend this place! Only downside was the gift shop was very crowded. The line up was out the door, so unfortunately we couldn’t buy any souvenirs.

A great museum for fans of Studio Ghibli. The museum is quite small but each room has a lot to look at! We spent around 3 hours looking around including getting a quick lunch from the cafe. You need to purchase tickets online in advance which is a bit of a pain to do as it’s quite competitive but it’s well worth it! There’s also a gift shop, a book shop and a cafe on site and admission includes a ticket to see a Ghibli short film in the cinema inside.

  • 5/5 Michael G. 8 months ago on Google
Magically detailed and beautiful, a MUST for fans, kids, and artists. There are many rooms that highlight the animation process, story boarding, coloring, and character movement. It seems like there are little secrets hidden everywhere you look. There is also a showing of an unreleased short film, for which you get a souvenir ticket stub that has see-through cells from a movie. Nice gift shop and cafe. No photos inside the building, only outside. You will need to book tickets one month in advance.

  • 5/5 Zoe W. 9 months ago on Google
Can't do wrong, very reasonable ticket prices (just need to be super prepared to purchase ahead of time as tickets sell out as soon as they're released). Love that you can't take photos inside as it creates the excitement of the surprise. The ticket included a 20minute screening of a short film too.

  • 4/5 Erik R. 8 months ago on Google
Cute and interesting showcase of the different Ghibli movies, artwork and the making of those things! The museum in of itself did not feel all too big, but despite that we spent easily around two, three hours walking around! There is a showing of a short film which was nice, which I believe also changes from time to time. There is also a gift shop where you can buy Ghibli related merchandise, figurines, tea cups, etc. I thought there would be more figurines, but it was still pretty interesting and I bought some nice pins for ~550 yen each. There is a cafe inside the museum where you can buy pretty simple food that is somewhat overpriced (~700 yen for a meal), however that is to be expected. Therefore I would recommend eating before you enter. But other than that, great experience, would recommend!

  • 5/5 Tiffany A. 6 months ago on Google
This was so fun. My partner isn’t a fan of Ghibli, but they really enjoyed it as well. The museum is like a maze, and you’re encouraged to explore it however you like. The exhibits are very fun and interactive, and I really enjoyed walking through and being transported into Miyazaki’s workspaces. You can attend a showing of one of their short films as well. I do not speak Japanese, so I did not understand the film’s dialogue but it was still very entertaining. The food at the restaurant was delicious too. You’re not allowed to take photos or videos of the inside of the museum, so keep that in mind. The tickets were hard to get though as a foreigner. The website is not user-friendly at all and the whole website and system could be improved. I won’t let that impact my review of the place, but just something to know beforehand.

  • 5/5 Kelvin L. 5 months ago on Google
In this lifetime, we all should be grateful for the existence of Hayao Miyazaki films. Ghibli museum is a must for any fans of the film. Here you will able to re-live the memories of watching Ghibli films, understand the amount of work that is placed in creating these films, and best of all, shop for those Ghibli souvenirs you have always wanted. Just reminder, no photographs inside the building (outside is ok). The actual Museum is not big at all, 3 floors. However, one will find themselves immersed into the pieces found at the site. You get a cute little film strip (that I use as a book mark) as an entry ticket. Save that ticket, as it is needed to go watch the film (where they stamp the ticket). The feature film itself is definitely recommended! My suggestion to you is take your time. You can easily spend 2 hours here (or more). I started from upstairs and working my way down, and then taking the elevator back up to look a the gift shop. Warning: the gift shop is almost easily very packed. I did not dine here, but always heard the Strawhat cafe (shout out one piece!) is pretty good. The line ups appear to be pretty long as well. If you plan to exit the museum, note that there is no re-entry! So make sure you finish off completely before exiting. (the surrounding area is super walkable with a mixture of residency and nature). Overall Kel rating: ★★★★★/5 The good: Everything about Ghibli is awesome. The decent: I do wish we can take pictures, but I can understand why no photography is not allowed. The ugly: Anyone outside of Japan, the ticket system can be scarce and hard to get. Lineups can build up easily and can be a long wait.

The pinnacle of what a museum should be! The place looked brand new and there are all sorts of surprises for Ghibli and animation fans in general. Be prepared for a long line if you get there later but don't stress as going through the exhibits is very manageable in a few hours.
