Food was not anything special. It is, however, the only one like it in Tokyo. That makes it excellent in its own right, not a place I could see myself going to twice. I think this place started with great intentions; however, as they began to get bigger, it seems that they are resting, and that’s okay. I find it funny this place got its name from being a “beacon” for the Black Community in Tokyo. Still, I saw a distinct way that they( the staff, not the owners) treated Black Americans, as we were first in the restaurant, but somehow ended up only being able to place our order almost last second only to the other Black Male who entered after us and his order was pushed to the back as well. Let's call a spade a spade; fix your staff, especially if they don't know how to treat anyone (Black People specifically). Black people, do yourself a favor, go anywhere else; it's crazy how we feel more welcomed in Tokyo by the Japanese than our people. If you all are in it just for the money, then say that, don't make this fake welcoming environment on Netflix, and have your Black Customers be the ones who get trashed the hardest. The chicken was rubbery; the biscuit was basic cheese was literally sliced cheese out the pack. Eggs tasted as if they were made by boiling a substance flavored as eggs. Nothing to see here Black PEOPLE they made this trash for Asians ONLY!!! ZERO FLAVOR!!!

Traveling to Japan for the first time and being from the south… this was a breath of fresh air. Being able to provide authentic “soul food” cuisines and actually perfect it. We ordered the Fish and Waffles, Mac and Cheese, steak and cheese sandwich. The drinks were delicious and creative all across the menu. This place was truly a delight to go to and definitely went to sleep after. Thanks for the southern hospitality!!

I grew up in the South and I love me some soul food. The chicken fried steak did the job but was it fire? The dirty sausage gravy and cornbread, they’re alright too. The hot chicken & waffle though… hit me baby one more time. Overall the food is as good as Southern food gets in Japan. I do wish they’re better at responding to reservation requests though.

Absolutely amazing. Highly recommended. Every item on the menu is packed with nostalgia from home, and basically unheard of on any other menu in the Tokyo from my experience. I had the chicken and waffles (buffalo and spicy variations were also good). But I'll probably go back again before too long to get in on all the other menu items I wanted to try.

APRIL 2023 Visited here early dinner on a weekday and ordered the cajun beer battered catfish with fries and the chicken waffle. The food took some time to be served but it came out nice and hot. The catfish was flaky with a thin crisp outer layer, cajun spice flavor was mild and goes well with the tartar sauce. Fries were cooked perfectly crispy and it did not felt greasy. As for the chicken waffle, the meat was tender but there was barely any savoriness or spice so I was tasting mostly just the sweetness from the waffle and maple syrup.

Pretty mediocre food, quite let down. Catfish and grits was like soup, not the typical creamy grits and crispy blackened fish as expected. Not bad flavor but not very good either. Texture was off. Not enough flavor. Out of the fried pickles. Fried okra was low quality fried flavor with tiny bits of okra. Maybe the worst I've ever eaten, which is surprising considering how easy it is to get good okra in Japan. Waffles were mediocre. Fries mediocre. Lots of dishes weren't even soul food. There are many better places for chicken and waffles in Japan, so even that, better to go elsewhere. Service was nice but really slow and kept screwing up the orders. Won't come back.

We wanted some brunch right after climbing Mt. Fuji. We came here first thing when they opened without a reservation with the help of one of their wait staff. They sat us down quickly. All the food looked really good I got the ultimate country breakfast and my friends got the chicken and waffles. They also let us get pitchers of mimosa and sangria. The sangria was delicious smooth and balanced. The breakfast was amazing. The biscuit wasn’t too hard or soft, the gravy was seasoned well, the eggs were cooked perfectly(not too dry or wet), the bacon and sausage was yummy, the grits were made perfectly creamy, the salad had a complimenting dressing on it, and the tater tots were perfectly fried crispy and soft goodness. I would love to come back here and try the whole menu

Delicious food and warm hospitality. We came here on a Saturday with no reservations and even though it was a little busy we were welcomed and seated after about 40 minutes. The food was sweet and savory and the special house cocktails complimented the spicy dishes. We ordered the Blackened Chicken, Hot Chicken and Waffle, Hot Fries, and the Passion Fruit Peach Salad and Sri Lankan Coconut Rum which came to around ¥7200. I highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely visit again if given the opportunity!

This was everything I had hoped for and more. I’ve only been home once in over three years and it’s hard to capture the atmosphere and warmth that comes with eating southern food with your family. It was a fantastic lunch. The owners are wonderful and welcoming. It felt and tasted like being home. Also, what a blessing to be able to share the comfort food I know with my boyfriend who has never had it before right here in Tokyo. Thank you guys for a great time! We will be back! I highly recommend the greens and black eyed peas for sides since those aren’t too easy to find around here! Felt like New Years Eve 😊

The staff was great. Spoke English and Japanese. The owners were absolutely wonderful to chat with. And the food exceeded ALL of our expectations!!! My country born and bred father enjoyed this place. And we all devoured every thing we ordered. Highly recommended!!! I will be returning when I visit Tokyo again.

ALWAYS WONDERFUL. BEST EXPERIENCE I LOVE THE OWNERS. after a month in Japan this was just the taste and feel of home that my friends and I needed. The food is always so incredible especially for the price. Last time I came was in 2019 and the vibe, the experience, the ambience, the flavor, and the price has all remained the same I’m so happy. All the food was so good but I should highlight that the Nashville chicken slider was the best I’ve ever had

10 10 10 across the board!!!!! I would recommend this restaurant a thousand times over and plan to visit every time I am in Japan. The food was amazing, the service was great, and so were the drinks. They even humored me when I wanted to create my own concoction— A peach mint lemonade mimosa lol. All of the food looked good. I got the catfish and grits and I did not regret it. I fully enjoyed all of the japanese cuisine on my trip, but being able to enjoy a piece of home, food my tastebuds feel all warm and cozy eating, was really unmatched. To note: -Its very easy to walk past, so be diligent about that. -The restaurant is small with limited staff so make a reservation if you can. I lucked up as a walk-in. Waited about 20 minutes. I promise it’s worth it. -They close between brunch/lunch and dinner, so roughly 15:00-17:00. -The prices do not include tax like some places in city just as an FYI With all that said, I got to meet and chat with the couple who owns the restaurant and it made me love it even more. They genuinely have a permanent customer in me.

Love this place. Great southern comfort food-reminds me of home. The owner are super friendly and nice. Food is delicious. Legit cornbread, gave me nostalgic feelings. Nice ambience. Totally recommend to go here hands down. I have gone back multiple occasions. Went here once for their Thanksgiving meal. The homemade pumpkin ice-cream from that meal was delicious.

As a black American visiting Tokyo we made a reservation for 6 p.m. took a taxi from our hotel to support this business. Was difficult to find. The owner was standing along the streets with a grocery bag who directed us to the 6th floor. After entering the restaurant and speaking with the owner he acknowledged our reservation. But had us standing while he stated after 30 minutes of waiting that he saw our reservation but didn't have time to confirm it. But has a party of 20 coming in so our wait for food would be even longer. After seeing the water glass he was pouring water in had stains on them. We kindly declined and left. Talking about tacky and unprofitable. Only to walk outside and meet 2 ladies who too had the same horrific experience. Thanks for the horrible experience as a business owner myself you taught me a valuable lesson. I don't see your business prosperous at all. You have no sense of business etiquette to new customers. And your establishment is dark and dirty to be located in a clean country as Japan. You brought your filthy ways from America to Japan. Know before you go... the worse customer service

Okay this place shouldn’t need a review, it is one of those places you would see on YouTube or a documentary. First the owners and staff were so kind. A true taste of southern hospitality and American warmness. Highly recommend! I ate the country fried steak, and it was the greatest thing I’ve ever eaten. And if you are into drinks the bartender will hook you up with his own creations. I recommend “Charlie Murphy’s Couch” so good! We then had their red velvet cake and it was the perfect balance of everything you could have wanted in a cake. Every red velvet I’ve ever eaten are typically dry, but not this one, so moist and such a delight. BEWARE! They’re very popular, and very very busy. Reserve in advance! My friends party was 8 people and he told us he called them about a month in advance. As I understand they cater, and host big parties as well. All in all 10/10/10/10 loved this place with all my heart.

One of the best food experiences I've had in my life here in Tokyo. I visited this place last Saturday noon and they had brunch menu. As soon as I saw biscuits and gravy on the menu, I couldn't resist ordering it. So I did. I also ordered a side of mac and cheese, nashville hot chicken and bbq rib. And these are the things that you MUST GET when you come here. I can say every single food was made with love. And I could actually taste it. Now this is the real SOUL FOOD! Everything came out within 10 minutes and piping hot, staffs were very friendly. Definitely coming back!

I've been here a couple of times, and I'm not sure if I can rate it as high as I would like. The Country Fried Steak batter was soggy and didn't bind to steak at all. The steak itself was tough and overcooked. The Chicken in the Chicken and Waffles was, again, soggy and cold. The waffles were not fresh. The Jambalaya was quite good, so were the Catfish and Chips. The quality flip-flops depending on the day and what you order, it seems.

Coming here as a recommendation for the southern food of america ( my husband miss his hometown food) and it was really good experience. The service was excellent, foods were phenomenal, and customer/ employees here are happy which create a really welcoming atmosphere than any other place. We didnt drink alcohol but the water was filled most the time which is a good sign of the staff really taking care of the customers. My first time being surround the black owned restaurants but feel like home. Get Treated like family even i’m just an asian. Over all, the vibe the food the service and the staff deserve 10/10 from me and my husband. ❤️

Southern hospitality in the heart of Tokyo - Yes, please! This place was home away from home! The atmosphere is great, the service is outstanding, and the food - ohhhwheee the food is freaking amazing! 🔥 There is so much to choose from you will have to go back. There are plenty of vegan (yes, I said vegan) and vegetarian options. I can't wait to try the brunch! The owners are so down to earth and love mingling and talking with customers, which makes you want to return! They make you feel like friends and family immediately. I went alone but never felt like I was eating alone! This will be a staple restaurant that reminds me of home!

(Translated by Google) A menu that can only be eaten here. When you pass through the elevator, you will feel like another country. However, the price range is high probably because of the location ... (Original) ここでしか食べられないメニュー。エレベーターを抜けると他国感。 しかし立地のためか価格帯は高め…

I found a small piece of home right here in Tokyo. As much as I love the Japanese food and culture, I was getting a little home sick. It was refreshing to see forks, as I struggle with chopsticks. The food was delicious 😋 and the owner made sure to supply me with all the fixing. I'll def make a visit here as much as I can while I'm living here in Japan.

I came to this place many years ago and really enjoyed the food. Not sure why I never made it back, but heard they were doing a Thanksgiving meal and decided it was time to come back. And I’ll say it right now, if you get the chance, book a table for next year…the plate is very American in not only its contents but the presentation as well. Everything was excellent, but the turkey, mac and cheese, and red velvet cake stood out. Will be back next year, but in the meantime, I’ll suffice for the chicken and waffles.

Had another great time and meal with my family at Soul Food House. I’ve had the chicken and waffles before. Today I had the catfish and waffles. Off the chain. This place is simply authentic soul food in the heart of Tokyo. The mac and cheese is also on point as well as the peach mint lemonade. Owned by a husband and wife team from the USA, it earns it name and bonfides honestly. My family also enjoyed it not only for the food but the personal family atmosphere which accommodates English and Japanese speaking clientele. Can’t recommend highly enough.

This place is just embodies comfort. There's just a very chill vibe that is perfected with the food. While it's my first time trying American soul food, it definitely struck some nostalgic parts of my Caribbean heart. I will highly recommend making a reservation beforehand because it's definitely a popular spot and you won't want to miss out on the chance to enjoy the experience at this restaurant. I'll most definitely be visiting again when I'm in the area!

The food is good! But there are a few cracks that I want to address. Trying many things from the menu, and being a Southern Boy I feel my word can carry some weight. The Mac and Cheese is probably the best in the Country. Soft shell crab was delicious. Nachos on point And the Seafood Gumbo was spectacular. However .. The Jambalaya was an Extreme miss. Chicken very dry, and rice lacking the texture needed for the dish. This also comes to plating issues. If you are going to have a side salad...plate the salad on a different plate. Filling half the plate with leaves and dressing to hide the fact the Jambalaya only makes up a 3rd of the plate is wrong. Same for the country steak. Not nearly as bad but again the 4 leaves and dressing on the side of the plate just came off pointless. The okra was clearly frozen and extremely over cooked to the point it was dry and chewy. The Soda for 500 a pop seemed really out of place. No refills and getting water refills were difficult. Over all the staff was extremely kind. The room was quant and homie. But the over cooked food and just lack of plating edict really hurt the experience. Highly recommend though, just stay away from the jambalaya and Okra.

Very friendly staff and authentic southern cousine. It was our anniversary night and they celebrated us in a very special way. I also got to chat with the owner and he was a very down-to-earth gentleman. The owner also runs a bar on the 9th floor and frequents both locations in the same building. Highly recommended for families and married couples, but not so much for date nights when you're looking for a romantic night out We will be back to try more of the menu!

Soul food is absolutely amazing with its hearty, spicy, tasty, and wholesome dishes that feel right at home in the southern states. The owners are from Mississippi and Georgia, and the food, deserts, and drinks are superb. I have been 4 weeks in a row and plan to keep coming back for the rest of my business trip!

I never leave reviews, but the hospitality was unmatched! We were sitting on the corner waiting for them to open when the owner walked by and asked if we were waiting for Soul Food House to open. We said yes, but they aren't open yet. He replied, "Go on up there, they will seat you, I'm the owner." We were so surprised, but we went up there, and the other owner (his wife) was waiting for us! We talked with her for about 20 minutes before they opened! We thoroughly enjoyed the conversation! Both of them were so sweet! However, the food was also delicious! The mushroom soup and onion salad dressing were (chefs kiss)! There is nothing like this in all of Japan, and we are so happy to have had the opportunity to have some great food and conversation! Even the young woman serving us was a delight! Lastly, they have a vast menu, so you are bound to find something you like! Thank you! We highly highly recommend!

I've been very impressed every time I've gone here. Great food, friendly service. Y'all have got to get your social media stuff down, though. My virus software blocks your website. Tried making a reservation on Messenger through your Facebook page. You replied to say that you would be open, but didn't reply when I tried to make the reservation. Tried sending an email - got an answer to one question but then no answer to a follow-up. Walked in having no idea if I had a reservation or not. Maybe you folks just don't need more business? Good for you if that's the case, but...

Hands down one of the best places to eat in all of Tokyo on all counts. Lovely atmosphere, the most warm, friendly and welcoming staff and the food absolutely bangs. Coming here always feels like coming home into a lovely, happy household. Also they have GLUTEN FREE OPTIONS which are absolutely delicious!! As someone with allergies, I really appreciate their care to making the allergy friendly versions of food just as good as the regular versions.

I was craving mac and cheese, so I came here. It was really good. I also had the chicken and waffles which were also very tasty. I made a reservation for 5 pm on a Friday and I was surprised we were the only ones in the restaurant, though I can't say how busy they are at other times. Making the reservation was really easy. I just sent them a message on instagram. Overall very glad I came here. Good mac and cheese is rare in Tokyo.

Pros: - Authentic southern food right in the middle of Tokyo! - Ordered the fried chicken and it was one of the best I've had, even beating out some places I know of back in the states! - Owners are super friendly and offer great service Cons: - This place can get busy! Make sure you have a reservation or go right when they open up or else you'll be waiting a while. I showed up at around 11 30 and it was pretty busy by the time 12 o clock hit.

First introduction to American soul food and it was a great one. That hot chicken on them waffles was spiced on point and the pepper gravy with the biscuits was flavourful, homely and just to die for. Pulled pork quesadillas were excellent, but slightly let down by the dry cornbread. Need to come back again and try the rest of the menu though, once is not enough!

Really wanted to like the food since we were visiting Japan and wanting to support a black owned business and wanting to get a taste of home since we were gone for a long time. I don't know if it was an off day but even though our reservation was confirmed, when we got there they didn't see us on the list (That should have been a sign just to cut our losses and find somewhere else to eat). Mac and cheese was really good but everything else was subpar. Our waiter was very helpful and friendly. When we do come back to Japan I don't see ourselves trying this place again.

I didn’t have a reservation and they were able to accommodate me without an issue. I had pork slides, Mac n cheese and chicken waffles. Im a sauce person, and the sauce on the slider was great! The Mac n cheese was the perfect amount of cheese and the macaroni was not too soft. the chicken was cooked well and crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside. This meal reminded me of home (from Florida)!

Limited space for eating but worth any wait time. Black owned and authentic American food, made from someone who knows how to put spice in your meal. We didn’t have reservations but arrived early enough to get seating. Recommend reservations. My daughter and I loved every bite. Definitely a must try if you come to Tokyo.

My family ate dinner here on our last day and the food was awesome! My wife is a picky eater and she ate her whole meal. My spareribs were great and the best I've ever had. The owners were very friendly. If you are in Tokyo I would recommend trying their food. The area is a trendy neighborhood too!

Fish and grits, macaroni and cheese, garlic green beans ALL delicious. Make sure you call a day or 2 in advance. It's very popular for a reason so plan ahead! OH! Also, call ahead for the peach cobbler, or you won't get it! 😁

These grits reminded me of my great grandmother, and I would come back just for the grits. But everything was absolutely perfect. From the super friendly owners and staff, to the awesome music. The mac and cheese was everything you want in a mac and cheese, and all of the other breakfast food was great! And we didn’t even try a lot of the other amazing looking menu items. I will definitely be back any time I’m craving real American food!

It pains me to give this place 4 stars after the absolutely wonderful time I had last year but upon visiting this year I have to go with 4. The food while good had some problems. It was not as flavorful as last year and I had to deal with a hair in my food. Luckily the staff were very accommodating and immediately changed the food. Also some members in my group were told that biscuits came with their food but then received food without biscuits. I have to say the atmosphere is great and the food is still very good though a bit lacking compared to last year. Hopefully next time will have a lot less hiccups and I'd be more than happy to change this to 5 stars.

Service: ❤ Food: ❤ Atmosphere: ❤ Music: ❤ I had the hot chicken & waffle. It was so good! Nice mix of spices. The flavorful type of spicy, not the burn your tastebuds off type of spicy. 🌶 I'll be coming back! That menu had it all! I'll take 1 of everything. I'm from Philly and used to families having their kids on the floor in family-owned places. Adds some personality to the place for me.

We went for our son’s 18th birthday lunch and everyone agreed it was the best southern food we’ve all had in a long while. Also, the waiter went above and beyond by adding a handwritten Happy Birthday in chocolate and with a candle on my son’s dessert! Thank you for helping to create a wonderful memory and the great meals. Definitely coming back soon!

I've been living here for quite some time and I kept saying I would visit and now I have. The food was something that I missed from home so my excitement stems from that. Nicely seasoned and tasted great even though the whole point of the trip was cornbread and I forgot to order it. Next time.

Excellent food, great service, wonderful owner. Highly recommend if you are carving something that will make you feel full and relaxed. Get the Mac n Cheese.

After having heard nothing but good things, we finally decided to try Soul Food House. The food definitely lived up to the hype. We tried the Mac and cheese, fried okra, fried catfish with cornbread and red beans and rice, and the tofu and waffles. Everything was delicious and the portions were generous. The menu has tons of options for meat and seafood lovers as well as for vegetarians and vegans - we plan to come back to try even more. Definitely make a reservation - when we got there at 5:30 there were a few open tables, but they filled up quickly.

Really glad I went. Best to reserve because the place is small and it can get packed. The seafood grits (garlic and shrimp) was so good and it was my first time having it. Definitely coming back

I love this restaurant!!! Upon entering we were greeted with a huge smile and friendly chatter from the owners. Such warm people. I felt a little piece of home in that moment. I tried the Country Fried Chicken meal and one day after, I still haven't finished. Not only was it delicious and filling, but they were kind enough to pack my leftovers. I will be going back soon to try other dishes from the menu for sure. 💕

If you want american soul food meals this is the place to come! I had jambalaya and my peers had chicken and waffles, ribs, catfish... Everything was soooo good. American portion size. Owners are super friendly. So many dishes to choose from. Was drooling just by looking at the menu.

Omg‼️ Where do I start⁉️ Firstly! The moment of truth was impeccable, the staff was amaaaazing and friendlllllyyyy‼️ My expectation was right then and there exceeded‼️💯 We had to wait for our seat , ofcourse because everyone wants to eat there so that was a great sign for us‼️ But while waiting, OMG‼️ the scent from the kitchen was tooooo tantalizing‼️💯 I was thrilled at that point To be dining for dinner here‼️💯 It's a very homely ambience and I must commend the owners for pulling that off‼️💯🙏 Now the meals were peeeerrrfect‼️💯🙏 100000% recommended‼️ Perfect temperature, perfect presentation, perfect flavors and taste‼️ Most importantly, perfect portion sizes‼️ I was defeated because I had to request to go boxes‼️🤭and my partner has promised to take me back there as my excitement was even more attractive to him than the actual dining experience‼️🤭❤ I call the lady Mama cuz that's how I felt and it's a good feeling being away from home‼️🙏 I'll return soon just to say ,thank you Mama again when my food is on the table‼️❤🤭💯🙏 To be honest‼️ the Gumbo soup was my favorite meal💯❤

Little slice of home away from home. Fantastically warm service, and "American sized" portions make this joint a real winner. Excited to come back soon!

Came here for my boyfriend’s birthday and it was perfect. Great atmosphere (the whole place smelled AMAZING, too), too many options to choose (we have to come back) and great portion sizes. The meal was delicious (I had vegetarian/ vegan food, he had meaty) the service was great and my boyfriend had a fantastic birthday meal. Thank you! We’ll certainly be back.

Disclaimer: I cannot say if it tastes like the real thing but by the sheer amount of American patrons I would say it is. The good: Portions are big, and everything tastes well. I’m not a huge fan of the waffle chicken but separately both were tasty. The desserts were probably my favorite. Servers were nice. The not so good: The cocktails tasted like pure sugar. The place is cramped and it’s understaffed, at least on a Friday night. Food is definitely on the pricy side. I wouldn’t come back but I don’t regret it either.

Food was great all around, especially the hot chicken and waffles. Staff are very friendly and speak English. Only downside was that the Beer prices are a bit off the deep end, 1,500 for large which was arguably smaller than a US pint. That being said you don’t go for the beer you go for the food, and they hit that out of the park.
