The hermitage is located in a place with traces of human presence since the Upper Paleolithic. Its construction, dating back to the 13th century, is attributed to the knights of the Templar Order. Over the centuries it has been the subject of several reconstructions and alterations to its structure, particularly during the 15th century, and in the 16th century, around 1531 due to an earthquake. In 1819 the hermitage was chosen to be the town's Lazaretto due to a plague that was spreading in Spain. In 1907 it was the target of works that strongly distorted its original layout.

Beautiful chapel from the 15th century, in a typically Alentejo Manueline-Mudejar style. 16th century tiles, good gilded carving on the main altar by a 18th century master. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the name of the master carver, as Portugal never honored these geniuses of gilding.

A church that means a lot to me, as I had my first communion, and great activities here as a scout. It was grouping 954 of the listening corps. The beauty of this church is enormous. It's worth the visit.

The more it smells like candles in a temple, the more devotion there is...the more spirituality of the people you breathe...it is one of those places. Super curious exterior architecture!

Beautiful on the outside! Unusual architecture. It looks like a sand church!

Unusual church architecture like a Disney concoction, only genuine! Opening hours are peculiar so I couldn't get in. I jumped the low fence to enter the grounds and hang out in the peaceful wild abandoned garden. Very pleasant!

Former Templars made history in this small church. It's small but with a lot of history and beautiful.

Beautiful church. Finally found a place that's quite, peaceful and beautiful without loud tourists. Felt really welcome by the friendly man at the door. He invited me in while I was hesitating and he gave me a postcard when I left donating some money to the church. Peacefull place that I will remember!
