I’ve only been here for a few days, but this has to be my favorite church in Madrid. It is a perfect example of perfectly combining both traditional and more modern liturgical art. The ceilings and stained glass are colorful and geometric but don’t feel out of place. Side chapels offer glimpses into the lives of certain Spanish saints. Classical, traditional framed artwork is hung around. You obviously must visit La Almudena which has a staircase leading up and down the figure of the Virgin. Confessions are offered in English according to some signage, however while I was there, the only priest who was available spoke Spanish, German, and French I think. I was able to make my confession as best I could in Spanish, to which the priest was very gracious and sympathetic despite my difficulties. Mass is also offered here. I’ve included pictures of the current schedule. The Cathedral cannot be toured during Mass which is a nice measure to maintain reverence since this is not just a tourist sight but a place of worship. Photography is allowed except in one of the chapels which houses the Blessed Sacrament and has signage indicating it is for prayer only. Please visit and make sure to offer at least a small donation to help maintain this beautiful location.

One of the most beautiful cathedrals I’ve seen in Europe. Very unique, and memorable, and best of all, FREE to enter! For an additional 7€ you can enter the upper section with balconies overlooking the palace and the city. Donations accepted at the door. Although there are no real candles, you can pay to light some battery powered ones. Handicap accessible. No photos or videos allowed during service. Beautiful art honoring holy figures that extend to some more contemporary names as well. Be sure to remove your hats and cover your shoulders when entering.

I paid 7€ to go up to the dome and I'm glad I did. The views up there are so nice, especially when the weather is sunny. You also have a good view of the palace. Once you pay for the dome, you also get to visit a museum but I wasn't interested in that. The cathedral's inside is beautiful and impressive. You almost can't tell it wasn't build centuries ago. If you don't want to go up to the dome, go around the side and visit the cathedral itself for free, but the views are worth it!

This is one of the most beautiful cathedrals in all of Spain. I highly recommend visiting it after the sunset so that before the sun sets you have the chance to see a beautiful pink colored facade of the Royal Palace. The inside of the cathedral is incredibly well decorated with the choir being a key highlight. Also check out the decorations near the altars that surround the perimeter of the cathedral. Pictures are allowed so go wild but keep in mind that the catacombs can be entered around the corner and are not always open at the times you might want to visit. The ceiling is especially breathtaking.

Amazing and enormous cathedral in neoclassical style, placed right in front of the Royal Palace of Madrid. Great place for stopping for a while, stay in silence, meditate and pray. The church was built on the ruins of a muslim mosque that previously stood in this place. The ruins are still possible to see. Highly recommend!

Simplemente Bella la Catedral 👍You have to options to get in paying or not paying ( for free you can only see a little part ) The amounts of gold that you can see there makes the place beautiful and unique….. but also make you think from where all that gold came…. just think and make a reflection about that…. anyway the Cathedral is beautiful, a must when in Madrid . Big yes 👍

Absolutely beautiful cathedral with both modern/rustic and original detailing regarding the architecture/stain glass windows. This cathedral is most definitely worth a visit, especially as being free to visit and walk around. The downside for myself was that you could not light real candles within this cathedral, they are all battery operated and although I appreciate this is to protect the building I was disappointed as I feel like takes some of the charm away. The remainder of the site is absolutely breathtaking, though with plenty to view/explore regarding the alternative statues/saints that you can pay your respects too. You can also pay an additional €7 euros to view the higher balconies of the cathedral and other parts - however we did not do this ourselves personally.

Absolutely stunning!!!!!!!!! Everything was beautifully crafted and amazing. The electric candles were a bit weird, but I guess that saves waste so I'm for it in the end. I could feel the spirituality of the place even though I am not part of that religion. It was grand and powerful and yet the story behind it was very vulnerable. It is based on the story of when people were ruling Spain (I can't remember which dynasty) and they were not allowed to practice Catholicism and when they took back the city behind the wall they found one virgin Mary statue with the candles still lit and it became a symbol of perseverance in religion. Wish the Catholics didn't then go and do that to everyone else but cute story.

Right next to the royal palace, although in old Gothic architectural style looks and feels quite new. There is a museum located at the upper part of the church, accessible, with an entrance fee of 6€, from a separate entrance and exhibits religious and church items. A free audio guide is provided through your smartphone. Plus you get to see the top of the church from the outside and the statues that decorate it from close up, not to mention views of the city. I found the church itself quite beautiful. It's quite tall following the Gothic tradition. I especially liked the stained glass windows with their bright colours as the light passes through them. But the rest of the decoration, especially above the altar, and also the numerous sculptures on the sides are very noteworthy. All in all, a must see, considering that it's free. You'll experience how other famous and old churches in Europe must have looked like when they were still new.

Pretty recent cathedral built in Madrid right across from the royal palace. This is where the kings get married and where the virgin of Almudena resides. Suggested donation of 1€ is well worth it.

We went out early in the morning in Madrid with just a few hours to waste. We ended up in this cathedral and were in absolute awe over the ceiling and beautiful stained glass. We are not catholic, but I love visiting cathedrals. I love the art and the history of them. This is a must visit spot in Madrid. Pictures don’t even do justice of how beautiful it is. Most people think of cathedral as dark and dreary places with colorful stained glass but this cathedral is so bright and vibrant. I would love to go back.

An incredible piece of Madrid’s history, and local story. The wealth that has been put into this place is outstanding. The views nearby of the park were my favourite to be honest, as I generally prefer nature and food to religious architecture.

Visit both the crypt and the Cathedral. The crypt alone is sufficiently impressive with 400 columns and 20 chapels. The cathedral is modern and full of glorious stained glass windows, decorated ceilings and paintings above the altar. The royal palac is next door. Follow up the cathedral visit by visiting the basilica church of San Francisco el Grande..even more worth a visit than the Cathedral.

Amazing new age church. This cathedral is a modern take on an old cathedral. Still fits all of the molds, but was finished within the past 100 years. Stunning and colorful. Free admission and definitely worth your time.

Amazing place located just next to the Royal Palace, which offers cool architecture and also great view on this city. There are some restaurants and cafes nearby, but be sure to take some water with you, since the place is very hot during the summer days.

A beautiful cathedral. There are many cathedrals in Spain, but this one is very nice with interesting ceilings. It is the first cathedral I’ve seen which has much of its space devoted to modern saints and religious figures, which is a nice change of pace. Everyone was friendly, including some nuns walking around. Overall I would highly recommend a visit, especially because it is free!!

The Madrid cathedral. It is huge and wondrous: you can tell right before entering that it will be magnificent. Inside there are a lot of paintings, carvings, sculptures, each one is a masterpiece, and the ceiling is colourful and fascinating. Do not miss the chance to visit it!

REALLY BEAUTIFUL CATHEDRAL! Definitely worth an hour to check out. Easy to find, it's right next door to the Royal Palace. Inside, it's a little noisy because it's full of tourists, but if you want a quiet prayer- head to the gold chapel where other people are praying. Interior is nice and there's a giant gold alter with the statue of the Virgin Mary - so climb the stairs to see that up close and personal. Overall, definitely the nicest church in Madrid!

Beautiful cathedral with wonderful geometric/cubist stained glass windows, colorful roof tiles, and elaborate gold frames. It is a large cathedral with lots of light, space, and tranquility.

  • 5/5 Chris B. 4 years ago on Google
At first glance from the outside, the cathedral looks rather plain, but when you get inside it's quite different! Some of the most colourful and modern paintings/stained glass windows I've ever seen! Free entry with a suggested donation of 1 euro makes it a bargain. The crypt was wonderfully cool on a hot August day in Madrid!

Must see inside if you get the chance. Be nice and donate a euro if only because they can keep it going as an attraction. It closed around 8.30 pm in June.

The Almudena Cathedral is an amazing building built in a mix of Neo-classical, Neo-Gothic, Neo-Romanesque and Neo-Mudejar. There are so many things to like about this beautiful building it's hard to know where to begin. Some of the outstanding features include: -The shrine to the Virgin of Almudena - The roof has an unusual square cupola - The wood panels on the ceiling a riot of geometric shapes. - The Pieta Sculpture - The contemporary stained glass windows - The paintings from the life of Christ above the high alter.

It is an interesting young cathedral dedicated by Pope John Paul II. I have seen nicer cathedrals and Basilicas but it is right across the Royal Palace and easy to go to so I would at least take 30 min. to go inside and form your own opinion. I liked the different stained glass the most, followed by the interesting door where you can recognize the Pope himself.

(Translated by Google) If in Madrid we have the ugliest cathedral in Christendom, well it is said and nothing happens. That we sell spaces until eternity to the Franco family in the crypt, because nothing happens either. Which is the epicenter of a series of plays and real estate hits by the Archdiocese in the center of Madrid, because here peace and then glory.

(Translated by Google) It is a newer Cathedral than most, but it does not show it in its architecture, which is a mixture of styles prior to its construction dates. Highly recommended the guided tour that also goes up to the balcony in front of the Royal Palace and outside the dome, especially at sunset (Original) Es una Catedral más nueva q la mayoría, pero no lo muestra en su arquitectura, q es una mezcla de estilos anteriores a sus fechas de construcción. Muy recomendable la visita guiada q además sube a la balconada frente al Palacio Real y al exterior de la cúpula, sobre todo al atardecer

Very beautiful church right across the palace. A lot of space in front to just sit and hang out and marvel at the architecture. We didn’t go inside. But the entrance is free when you are going around the building and take the other entrance. The entrance in front is for the museum.

A must visit in Madrid. A historical building with an incredibly illumination at night. Really amazing!

Almudena Cathedral, or Santa María la Real de La Almudena, is the seat of Catholicism in Madrid, and consecrated by Pope John Paul II in 1993 its modern appearance is a staunch departure from many Churches across Europe. Begun gothic in 1879 and delayed by the Spanish Civil War one will notice elements of Baroque architecture outside a Neo-Gothic space filled with art and modern elements.

Some of the best stained glass I've seen anywhere. Amazing ceiling. Optional €1 donation to enter, a bargain.

Catedral de la Almudena is a cathedral in the Madrid. It is located in the Madrid city centre, in its histroric area. Entrance to this buliding is for free and it is open from 10. The front of this cathedral is facing the Royal Palace and it is part of the royal palace complex. Cathedral is situated on a hill and is therefore visible from many places in Madrid.

Beautiful cathedral. The cathedral is fairly new and was completed in 1993. It was actually built over the site of a old mosque. The walls of the mosque can actually be seen on the side of the cathedral.

Gorgeous cathedral. Costs 7 eur to go into the museum and get onto the roof. I wasn't really impressed by the museum but the roof panoramas were quite nice. Inside the cathedral itself there are some pretty stunning and unique stained glass pieces.

Almudena Cathedral is quite new . The cathedral was completed in 1993. In 2004, the current king Felipe VI got married with Letizia here. Especially, the ceiling is amazingly beautiful!! Do not miss it!

Beautiful cathedral in front of Royal Palace of Madrid. Reasonable 7 Euro Ticket for Museum and Dome visit. Preferred time to visit is before sunset. Enjoy the view of Madrid from top of Dome.

What a beautiful building. Fascinating story boards within the museum of the cathedral from the history of its construction to the religious factor. The views from the towers were amazing. The entrance fee was pretty reasonable too. Well worth the effort to visit.

This is a cathedral next to Royal palace of Madrid and its a nice easy walk from Plaza Mayor via narrow lanes. Cathedral has a free entry and beautiful interior/exterior architecture including stain glass paintings, murals. You can easily spend 30-45 mins inside and an hour around the cathedral. You can also check out the palace & parks nearby.

Amazing "national cathedral" across from the Royal Palace! Not to be missed! Modern (late 19th century) construction differs from many of the other "historical" cathedrals in Madrid - it is beautiful in its own way and the site is historically significant. Plenty of classic church history inside. The first cathedral consecrated outside of Rome.

It's a wonderful cathedral, on the outside as well on the inside - the pillars, pictures and the overall architecture makes it one of the favorite places to spend some time in silence. Being next to the Royal Palace makes it hard to miss.

I'm not a religious person but I do admire the skill, work and craftsmanship that has gone into buildings such as these. Well worth the time to pay this a visit, especially given its close proximity to the royal palace.

This is a Catholic church and is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madrid. It is located across the Royal Palace. It has a baroque exterior and a new gothic interior. We saw a multitude of worshippers and tourists on the day of our visit.

€1 recommended donation to enter. Nice stained glass windows and decorative ceilings. Busy but fairly quiet. Modern Chapel for John Paul II in timber. The entrance is on the side by the main road, not opposite the Palace.

Magnificent cathedral in Madrid, right across from the royal palace. Prayed for my wife, my family, my friends and my country in this beautiful peaceful place. Hope the prayers were well received.

A very beautiful two dimensional church, there are two sets of seats in crossed directions. The free entrance to the church is through a side gate. The main gate at Royal Palace Square requires a entrance fee for visiting the dome and museum.

Very beautiful cathedral. Enjoyed walking in and seeing all the art and architecture. You can take pictures. You must be quiet and respect those that might be worshiping. No shorts or tank tops. There is a small donation of one euro.

  • 5/5 Kero C. 5 months ago on Google
The cathedral looks stunning from outside and inside. The entrance is free and it takes around 10-15 minutes to finish the whole thing.

Beautiful and historic cathedral. Well worth the visit. We didn’t go inside, but we were fortunate enough to arrive near sunset and were treated to amazing views over the city. Definitely a highlight of our visit! Would visit again, if only to go inside!

Massive cathedral, you can spend a good 15 minutes inside to view the beautiful architecture, and different art pieces. Free-entry.

It was very beautiful and spacious but it was crowded. The towers were closed as it was the weekend so we couldn't see the view from the top but we enjoyed it a lot inside. We also loved the gift machine that gives you printed coins.

I stopped by this cathedral by accident but ended up with a great view for old Madrid, the royal palace, and knowledge about the name and other catholic things. Too bad no picture is allowed inside the museum, bc otherwise I could share better. Those religious artifacts were astonishingly beautiful. The ticket is totally worth it.

Wonderful cathedral, you can enter for free. A must visit even if you're not religious as the interior and design is simply brilliant
