This place is HORRIBLE! If I could leave a 0 review I would. I had a family member admitted for a suspected heart attack from another hospital in Vermont who was not equipped to handle it properly. Not one, not two, but THREE cardiologists failed to READ the patients records. If they had, they would have known about the rare condition he was diagnosed with 15 years ago and they would have known that this condition causes pericarditis. Instead they ran multiple tests they didn't even understand and IGNORED the MRI results and sent him home!!!!!!!!!! Meanwhile his aortic valve remains enflamed and they never even attempted to figure out why or a treatment for this. If they had read the records they would have made a quick diagnosis and administered proper medication to relieve the pain and pressure he was experiencing. All they want is to run tests to receive money and keep adding onto their already expensive oversized hospital. And the best part, a comment made by one of the cardiologists "this hospital is packed to the brim with patients and you're just one in the queue". Thanks University of Vermont Medical Center for absolutely NOTHING. Pretty sad when family members are the ones doing the research and coming up with answers to the questions about why this happened.

5/15/23: I hate that I have to update this every few months but they keep messing up every few months. I was in the emergency department with my friend who came in complaining about vomiting blood issues. I arrived late to find out that someone wrote "coughing blood" and they had spent an hour testing and x-raying the wrong part of his body. My buddy got double the x-ray dose that day and an hour of hospital resources wasted because triage didn't listen. The waiting room was empty, so triage definitely wasn't rushed. Newest Experience: COMMUNITY WARNING: The UVMMC Emergency Department and police officers are actively/passively working to remove mental health patients from the ED. A friend was escorted out by security after saying they were going to hurt themselves. The nurses said "this is not a hotel" and that the patient was too medically stable to be allowed to stay there (they claimed hospital and insurance policies). Upon calling the police and informing them of the situation, ON A RECORDED LINE: Question: "Can the hospital discharge a patient if they have said they are going to harm themselves?" PO: "That is their policy, there is nothing we can do." Howard Mental health is stepping in today, but be VERY careful out there with your mental health friends. The system is being rigged against us because we are expensive and give bad feelings. Everyone is safe for now but the system is failing. Be careful and stay safe. What a hot mess. Wait 4 hours, almost feinted, and then they put us in a non-hospital room in some annex. This isn't a hospital room. It's a mess. After 6 hours, no sign of custodial staff and I have resorted to asking nurses to clean up the various vomit bowls left around the ER by patients. 6.5 hours, we are finally let into a real ER room and it's filthy. Bags of soiled linens in the halls.

For a hospital that is a medical school, I’m upset at the service at the Medical Center of Vermont . I was there 8/21 for back pain, couldn't reach my doctor, wanted some quick relief for my pain so i ventured to the ER. The nurse was very nice and assisted me with expertise and care of what my issue was. Quickly diagnosed issue and recommended solutions for me- exercises and suggested prescription for muscle relaxers- all good all that was done 10:30-12:00. BUT then came the wait- at 3:00pm finally i got up after the 3rd time of requesting my discharge papers and disclosed that “what is problem? “ then the papers were given to me. I observed a lot of staff hanging talking at podiums- the patient next to me was distraught waiting for surgery that was scheduled at 6am, then 9am, then 2:15 they finally wheeled him out to surgery. I even went to desk and said “ i think he needs help” she answered “ he's fine” Tell me, WHY is this hospital so disorganized? I hear more and more of disgruntled people re our hospital? I was born there- over the 70 years i have taken my clients there for their needs, and always its an extremely long time to get anything done, communication is lacking and even had a doctor yell at my client that “ he needed her out of the room” ( miller building ) my client had to stand up for herself, she was in there for cardiac issues had a pace maker placed the next day- that Dr needed her room?? I was appalled. We never filed a complaint but should have. Whats wrong with our hospital? The nurses seem very helpful and caring, but then they dont get the support they need to get patients needs taken care of. Medical Ctr of Vermont should not be run this way.

We had to visit the ER unfortunately. My fiance was in an accident. After a cat scan and waiting for quite a while (over an hour) to have the Dr go over the results with us (we'd already seen it electronically through portal) her blood sugar was nearing critical levels. I asked a nurse if she could eat some food because of her hypoglycemia. She said she'd be back shortly. We waited around 1 hour just to be told that they couldn't give her any food. We were pretty much forced to leave against medical advice.

Worst hospital around!!! Honestly loved this hospital throughout my life. Had medical issues that brought me to spend many of my younger years here. Also worked here in a couple different positions in my twenties. Always loved, trusted and respected this hospital. The care and compassion is no longer available. I get covid has made there jobs a bit more challenging but it’s no excuse for how awful treatment or lack of treatment has become.

Went to the emergency department after passing out and hitting my head on a brick wall. The ED doctor told me he didn’t diagnose head injuries. They kept me for 1.5 hours. Did only one neuro assessment. I went home and woke up confused, dizzy, and had difficulty finding words. I went to Boston for care and was diagnosed with a subdural hematoma. Just received a bill for $350 for my ED visit. I’m 18 and have no way of paying this on top of my medical bills from Boston. I could have had my head injury treated 1 hour from injury rather than 20 hours after. Terrible care and I feel discriminated against because of my age and because I did not have my parents with me. They discharged me before family could get to the ED.

The worst excuse for a hospital I've ever seen hands down ! Started off in the er in a room the size of your bathroom garbage overflowing with old gloves and whatever else was in it all over the floor. Think anyone would pick it up nope let's just keep throwing it in it. Then my wife gets admitted upstairs worst thing ever no communication between nurses or doctors and forget trying to get a doctor on the phone to find anything out nope I get the nurses station and they say they take down my number and doctor will call ya right everytime I called I had to get ugly with the nurse in charge to get answers mind u my wife went in there for a stone stuck in one of her bile ducts which caused pancreatitus. We live 3 hrs away and I can't talk to someone about my wife and how she is doing very unperfessional in my book so no i would not recommend this hospital to anyone if I could give it 0 stars I would

Okay so as a nurse I was very very disappointed. I had to spend most of the day there and the bathroom 4th floor of main building was disgusting! One toilet working, trash cans overflowing, and no toilet paper! There is a notice on the wall to "call this number if room needs attention" I called at 9AM and was told that "we will be right up to take care of it" yet, by 4PM the situation was unchanged. For a hospital to be so concerned about screening those coming in and asking for masking, it is concerning as I am sure the number of germs in that bathroom were multiplying by the minute. I know how hard it is regarding staffing being a nurse myself, but there is no excuse.

They broke my partners back in two places. Blamed him. Stole years of time our family would have gotten to be together. No sympathy, no apology, no acknowledgment, or reparations. Just another shattered family in the wake of their carelessness. Don't trust them with your life unless you are willing to lose it in the most unpleasant of ways. I will never forget the months of blood curdling screaming my daughter and I listened to as my husband was shattered and denied proper pain management. Watching him wither away for months. Now too weak to seek medical help from anywhere else. I banged my head against uvm for the rest of his remaining time to make him as comfortable as possible until his suffering was finally no more.

My 2 year old daughter was transferred from Elizabeth Town Emergency center in NY 1 hr + for pneumonia the staff that took care of us were great except one of the nurses who decided to nag when my spouse was coming to pick us up and then decided to aggressively tear the iv bandaging she had on her already sore and bruised arm when i couldnt finish doing it myself. Honestly I would not wanna be in the shoes of someone dying in this state/ER

I cannot add anything new to the 198 reviews before me that average to 2.7 stars. I can say that I got the same experience some of the others had. What boggles my mind is there is no review system to take this horrible feedback and turn into something good. Given the dominance of UVM in Vermont health care space, I feel for patients of VT.

This place is the worst hospital ever. They make you think you are crazy if you have a complicated medical condition. Also, they've accessed my medical records from another hospital without my permission (ones that were not transferred), almost let me pee my pants because they wouldn't help me, not told me about abnormal test results, put anxiety in a differential diagnosis for something not at all related to it, and told me to have a serious conversation with my parents about my medical conditions (as if that would fix all my problems) despite me telling the doctor I talk to my parents everyday and they are very aware of my medical conditions. I have to go to this hospital sometimes but it is torturous every time. The doctors and nurses make me think all my symptoms are in my head and I always leave jarred emotionally and often still unwell physically. The doctors also put it on multiple post visit summary notes that my inability to walk is concerning and I literally came in with a wheelchair I use everyday (at baseline).

This place has the absolute worst care I have ever seen and experienced. They do not create a care plan for the individual, instead you're a number and if you have X issues they treat you the same as everyone else with X issue, even if you progressively get worse in their care, they just scratch their heads and repeat what the last DR said and continue using their template. And if you can somehow manage to get better while staying under their care, you can be sure they will milk you dry and find ways to charge you months to even years later with a "we forgot to charge you for X" You are a number here, nothing more, your issues exist purely to provide the hospital with $$$ they do not care about you or your health. If possible go to another hospital that is not affiliated with UVM, if you need to take an ambulance, have them take you to any other medical facility.

Would literally die rather than go here again, good chance if you've got something serious going on, you'll die before a doctor actually gets to you anyway, or die due to the negligence of your so-called doctor. If you have the means, or the time, go literally anywhere else. Just go and have a random person off of the street address your emergency, you'd probably have a better experience and outcome.

I would give this 0 stars if I could. While everyone was very nice going through booking the appointment and at the appointment, that means nothing when they KEEP BILLING YOU FOR SOMETHING THEY BILLED INCORRECTLY. I went in for my annual appointment but they booked it wrong so my insurance won't pay for it. I've been on the phone and messaged them 5 times to explain the problem but they refuse to correct it and are sending it to collections. This is for a $100 bill. They literally do not care about the people. Trash institution.

You need to use Student housing for Nurses for 6 months until a Nurse can find suitable apartment…Nursing they pay their “ travel Nurses” a higher hourly wage than the staff Nurses and keep extending their contracts some are there for years , the hospital can’t See this . Especially at Central Vermont Hospital, recruitment doesn’t help find housing, they send you to websites .. seriously I can find the website.. you want To attract Nurses ? Find them housing.

Ive been here as a doordash driber delivering food and the old ladies at the main desk are miserable mouthy and rude. I went in the other night with covid. I "looked like you got hit with a train". I explained i was staying in my car and they just gave me one dose of tylenol and sent me off. Back out into a cold car covered in sweat... christmas eve isnt even a good enough reason to give a bed for the evening or a prescription to cover my meda....although ive slept with a few nurses that work there. And it's apparent they can only care about someone else's heartbeat when they're getting paid a ridiculous amount of money.

Absolute worst hospital EVER!!! I've lived all over the US and overseas, and I've never experienced such ineptitude. One of my family members was seen at Fanny Allen Campus (a UVM campus) and was told they needed to be seen immediately and urgently at UVM. The consult was put in as an urgent consult, and we waited. After never hearing from them, we called the department and were told that they tried to call our Primary Care Provider but couldn't get in touch with them as they needed a new referral. We contacted our PCP and had the referral placed immediately and UVM REJECTED the consult. We called back and were told that they needed a different consult referral put in. So once again we called our PCP, had the new consult put in and UVM rejected that consult as well, saying they actually needed the first one. We got the first one put back in, and then UVM stated they needed a form filled out. They have absolutely no idea what they're doing here. I 100% recommend going ANYWHERE else besides UVM. Make the drive to Dartmouth.

My husband was able to get in to see the neurosurgeon quickly after an mri showing spine trouble. Everyone in that office is amazing! Every time we call to ask questions they were so helpful. The team for surgery was amazing too with a great surgical outcome. Everyone from registration to the surgical waiting staff and nurses were knowledgeable and so nice. We spent a week up on Miller 6 and his care there was great, I can't say enough good things about the nurses and staff there. Friendly, funny while professional and caring. It made the necessary evil of surgery a pleasant experience.

Can I just say my experience at uvm today was far from expectation, #1 the place was dirty the gynecology department was less than sanitary in my opinion #2 they had me schedualed for a procedure I’ve already had and gone on thru more testing ect and was under the impression my referel was to meet with the surgeon to prepare schedual apts for the upcoming surgery I requested to have there (only because Dartmouth had zero openings) then said she is not licensed for hysterectomy’s ect. Her knowledge was less than par in my opinion #3 lack of patient hospitality and care, three different people who seemed to be in left field nurse trainee doc, requested I undress didn’t even give me a gown a sheet or anything, did not even respond to thank you and have a nice day at end of visit, #4. Left with no new information as far as apts, surgery is for only knows how far out months and months was docs response unknowing of next doc I have to see, they did say another apt with a doc that’s licensed for surgeries then another apt for ultrasound then another apt for preop im like dudes I’m 2 hrs away, and y’all are beyond unprofessional completely rethinking my choice in care, at this point t my gynecologists office is one hundred times better than what I endured ( I just wasn’t a fan of north country hospital) but at this rate think uvm was worse so now in limbo!!! Decisions decisions

I have been unable to get the care I need at UVMMC. There has been a complete loss of continuity in my care. My Primary Care doctor keeps changing, and they do not understand my problems. I waited almost a half hour in a Zoom appointment and nobody from UVMMC even showed up. Doctors are unaware of the costs they incur, my yearly checkup visit cost over 10X what I expected due to the choices the doctor made on the computer. The doctor is unreachable without a costly appointment, so I am forced to work through the Patient Advocacy group to get resolution. UVMMC is very expensive for generally poor care.

I had a horrifying experience here in 2016. My son was born at Copley hospital and sadly we had to be transferred to UVM. I agree with some other reviews I read saying that they will make mistakes and then blame the patient and yes we were treated like just a number. I am terrified of this hospital. We had to leave against medical advice because they rubbed the skin of my sons scalp with rubbing alcohol and there were little cuts and tears all over his head. They did call dcf and are more worried about their staff or receiving a law suit then the patients. When my son was in the nicu a nurse stuck herself with a needle and they blamed me for being in the room and making her nervous and they wanted me to get blood tested for aids. I later found out it was mostly students that were making choices about my sons care. If you have medicade they will perform as many procedures as possible to get more money and to teach their students. I wrote a hand written review about my experience and it was anonymous. They later called me knowing it was me and told me I was probably just upset because it was a hard thing to go through. I wasn’t happy with my experience. I was a young mom with no support and they didn’t care. I felt traumatized after leaving UVM. Thankfully I have gotten help since. But to this day I don’t trust this hospital.

I read the reviews on UVM Medical Center and feel immediately puzzled as to whether we are all talking about the same place. In any case, this review is for the ED, Mother and Baby Unit, Labor and Delivery, and NICU. After my water broke suddenly, we found ourselves at the ED at UVM. We were swiftly admitted after calling ahead, and within minutes, the nurses and doctors in L&D were examining me and attempting to figure out if I was in fact in labor. Within hours, I had been given a preventative steroid shot, had my babies monitored, and spoken with NICU and other relevant staff about the possibility of my babies coming soon. Fast forward, and I spent 12 days in the Mother and Baby unit trying to stave off a “too early” delivery under the care of immensely kind, talented, and competent nurses and doctors. We were in awe of how much attention we were given. The nurses ranged from 9/10 to 12/10 in terms of what they did for us. Having had several nurses over the course of such a long stay, take that rating range to mean something significant. Each doctor was down-to-Earth, knowledgeable, and easy to speak with. My emergency C section was nothing short of amazing. The team assembled in what felt like minutes, and the amazing anesthesiology team explained every step with the perfect balance of lightheartedness and clarity for a scary situation. Then there was the fleet of yellow-scrub-clad nurses from NICU ready to work on my twins as soon as they came out, as well as all the other support staff. A beautifully done surgery, and most importantly, in hindsight, the right calls were made the whole way through. Fast forward a little more to my twins in the NICU, where the staff was downright awe-inspiring with the level of care and attention given. It’s the small things — remembering the babies’ names, our story about our unexpected birth, the little extras for the babies, and beyond. These people are human angels. Other notes include the comfort of the Mother and Baby rooms. Partners are given a Murphy bed which is an absolute lifesaver, and the kitchen is stocked with snacks and drinks for families — all sponsored by our favorite grocery store, Healthy Living. Somehow this review doesn’t feel like enough to adequately express the care we received at this incredible hospital. I also wish I could list names, but I got into the several dozen — keeping track of all the amazing individuals we encountered — and missed a few, so it doesn’t seem fair. I feel blessed to have birthed my twins here, and this hospital will forever have a special place in our hearts.

I had my first ever mammogram at this location and it couldn't have been more wonderful. The staff was extremely friendly and professional. it turns out there are different gown lengths depending on if you show up for your appointment in a one-piece dress or pants - this was a popular discussion in the waiting room! They informed me a couple of different times that since it was my first time I might receive a follow-up request for additional imaging and an ultrasound. So when I got the call I was not alarmed. During the follow-up appointment I was told that there was something in my left breast that they wanted to biopsy. They showed me the images and walked me through the 'whys.' Once I was dressed again I was taken to a private area to discuss the procedure. I was given a brochure and had the opportunity to ask questions. The next day I was contacted to schedule the appointment. Initially we were looking at several weeks ahead for the biopsy. However, since I was going to be leaving to be out of state for an extended period, they worked with me and managed to schedule in the same week.- I just had to split the procedure into multiple visits (one for the pre-procedure mammogram and then another for the actual procedure). Everyone in the room was extremely nice and reassuring. They gave me the option of being able to see the procedure (no thank you) and also whether I wanted to be walked through what was happening in real-time. They demonstrated the sound the biopsy tool would make so that I wouldn't be surprised. I was given a rolled up wash cloth to clench for both stress and to make my elevated arm position more comfortable. After the procedure I was given post-surgery instructions, ice packs and a lovely thank you card signed by everyone involved. I was told results would take 3-5 business days. I received the results in 2. I came into contact with many different hospital team members throughout my visits and everyone was extremely cordial, professional and caring. This was my very first mammogram and I was nervous - we grow up hearing horror stories about how uncomfortable and demeaning the process can be. I'm grateful to everyone at UVM for making my experience as seamless and low-stress as it was. I highly recommend them!

Two stars represents 6 stars for the staff I've had medical run ins with. -1 for their billing department. You want to know why they have money problems, here's a good example. Twice they sent my bill to collections, despite me making monthly payments. The first time they admitted their mistake and took back my account from collections. This time they said they won't. This is because I picked up another bill, I asked them to merge my accounts and never got a separate bill so I assumed they did it. I Continued to make my payments monthly and suddenly I'm getting collection notices, they tell me they never merged my accounts so, despite not getting a separate statement, they sent it to collections. They sold my account to a collection agency and when I call to tell them I've been paying they said they won't do anything about it. They sold it for pennies on the dollar. So inside of saying 'hey it was a mix up, I see you reliably pay monthly, we will fix this for you', they choose to lose a bunch of income, instead of getting the full amount from me. And Its just about the principle of the thing. I can barter with the collection company and wind up paying less than I would have owed UVM. So if anything this is to my advantage. But what gets me is the way they treat good paying customers. UVM has lost their local touch, and their desire to help people apparently. Do yourself a favor and go to Copley, Gifford or Dartmouth.

Family member had triple bypass surgery, all staff were above and beyond my expectations. Surgeon deserves all the praise from whomsoever is lucky enough to have her. Not one of the entire staff I encountered was miserable or just there for a paycheck.
