Outstanding museum for the history buffs! Great job Montreal. Way to own and love your city!! I wish my city had this type of museum to highlight its beauty. I couldn’t get enough. Do NOT miss the video! Starts every half hour. Then find yourself following the signs through the multitude of exhibits. I was mesmerized. Literally read every piece of information, well almost. From the way the exhibits were presented, to the cool walkways and the old sewer, this place was the highlight of my trip to Montreal. Will come back if I’m ever back.

I went on a weekend and staff were pleasant. The routes can be confusing as there is no clear direction in the basement and pirate ship areas. The Egyptian exhibit is the piece d' resistance during my visit. Exhibits from 1500BCE were on display including some tombs and mummies. The history of Montreal is very interactive and interesting. Overall I enjoyed it. Set aside 2 hours if you want to see it all.

I stopped in Montreal just for this museum and it was such a good choice. They integrated digital projections onto the historic infrastructure beautifully. The displays were captivating, fully bilingual and easy to understand, with silhouettes used to effectively display how fragments fit into the bigger picture. Good use of lighting and music to set a very restful, nearly meditative tone, in some of the spaces. This allowed me to slow down, rest my weary feet, then continue with the next exhibit. The entire museum took approximately 3-1/2 hours.

Very confusing layout. Can't even tell you how many times I went around and around in circles. And two entire sections were closed due to flooding? It's an interactive museum and wonderful for children, but really boring for adults. A lot of $$$ was spent on the presentation of the artifacts, but the artifacts were not that impressive. It almost hurt to see how much money they spent on showcasing the artifacts rather than buying more impressive artifacts. What's that saying about putting lipstick on a pig? It's interesting to see the foundation of the former building and to read about the indigenous people, but there is way too much time spent on that and not enough time spent on anything really interesting. I would have liked to have seen more indigenous art. Kids will love the interactive pirate boat exhibit. I went to see the Egyptian special exhibit. There are a few nice artifacts, including my favourite, the statue of Amenhotep II carved out of porphyritic granite. I also liked the coloured-inked papyrus, too. Was it all worth $25? No. Somebody needs to get real about the pricing. Or pay to buy better quality artifacts.

A great way to immerse yourself into the history of Montreal. The museum rests on the site of the city’s original settlement - the excavation of which is visible underfoot. There are various artifacts and miniatures on display that walk you through the history from a European and Native perspective. It also includes many temporary exhibits on various topics and eras. We saw the Viking exhibit during our visit which was very fascinating.

This is a great museum! Lots of interactive exhibits to show Montreal's past. It is engaging and fun. There is a pirate section for kids which I found amazing! I thought it might be a bit boring but it was not! Really worth visiting. There is a nice gift shop in one of their buildings.

Great experience! Learn a lot about the stories of Montreal. Fair price, you can stay a full afternoon without problem. Much more entertaining than the biodome!!!

We were able to buy tickets upon arrival. So it may depend on the season or time of day, but it doesn't appear that reservations are needed in advance. We only had 4:30-6:00, which was enough for the Vikings exhibit and the gift shop (both of which we really enjoyed). We looked at area E, but did not have time to look more. The cashier told us most people spend 2-3 hours in the museum. They have an elevator to access the different floors but one of the exhibits we saw has stairs only, but you can also walk around it. Highly recommend the visit. The vikings exhibit had many interactive aspects. All info in French and English. The gift shop had a variety of options that we purchased as souvenirs, including porcelain style pottery and dishes, and québécois soap. Adult tickets prices start at age 31 years.

Decent place to spend a couple of hours. Most of the focus is on the history of Montreal. Pretty cool they've the actual ruins from the first settlers. The Viking display was interesting. But it relied heavily mostly on graphics and recreated actors and not too many artifacts.

This was a great museum! We really enjoyed the different exhibits, especially the areas that showed the different uses of the spaces through time. The memory collector tunnel was a great experience, as was the marketplace exhibit in the building Montreal section. We didn't manage to get to all of the temporary exhibits, so would recommend a couple visits to do it all and really get the most of everything there is to offer. Wouldn't recommend it for smaller children, but there were a few areas that were appropriate for kids. Would come back on another visit!

Had a great educational experience! I thought we could finish up in 1-2 hours but end up exploring more than 3.5 hours. Their cinematic show about the history is beyond great. Sounds system are from Bose. No wonder it is good. Highly recommend it! Great educational experience about origin of Montreal, France and British influences. Additional features about history of pirates and circuses

The Montreal Archaeology Museum offers a captivating journey through history, but it falls short in some aspects. While the exhibition about ancient Egypt is undeniably fascinating and worth a visit on its own, the presentation of Montreal's history leaves something to be desired. I was disappointed by the lack of emphasis on the First Nations' contributions and their culture. The museum seemed to skim over their significance, and I expected a more comprehensive representation of their rich heritage. Furthermore, I noticed a subtle bias in the way the colonizers' history was depicted. It felt like some aspects were downplayed or sugar-coated, and I expected a more unbiased account of the events that shaped Montreal's past. A more balanced approach, acknowledging both the achievements and the impact of colonization on the indigenous population, would have been more appreciated. On a positive note, the museum's architecture itself is quite intriguing. The building's design and layout provide a unique backdrop for the exhibits, enhancing the overall experience. The blend of modernity and tradition in the architectural approach adds an element of interest to the visit. Despite my reservations about the historical portrayal, the exhibition on ancient Egypt is a definite highlight. The artifacts on display were captivating, and the information provided was engaging and educational. If you have an interest in ancient civilizations, this section of the museum alone makes it worth the trip.

Place is interesting for adults and kids. Great look-out on the top floor. A beautifully composed introductory film about the history of Quebec and Canada for 17 minutes. Separate children's room if you visit with children. Unique exhibits in the Egypt parts. The atmosphere is good for spending time with the whole family.

Did not have much hopes as I walked in, but this museum is amazing! The multimedia show was the best Ive seen (dont miss it!) and we get to walk around a lot of archaeological structures and great interactive exhibits. The pirate section was also fun! Highly recommended stop!

It’s a beautiful and informative place to visit. We had a group of students also. It gives us a glimpse of how Montreal and Quebec came to be. The contributors and their toil and everything. It’s worth a 45 min of your time. The ticket costs around 15$ and you may buy it online or at the counter. It doesn’t seem busy when we visited which was during weekdays .

Entrance was $20 USD, too much in my opinion given two exhibits were closed -- the Egypt exhibit and the sewer exhibit. The museum gave a detailed history of Montreal, and of the early settlers and indigenous people. I would have liked to see more history of Canada in general. The ruins of the old cemetery and first settlement was the most interesting part. Left a bit disappointed.

Awesome exhibits. It’s so cool that you can go between the two buildings that make up the museum and walk through the old infrastructure. Welcome staff were a bit cold, but the staff at the Egyptian exhibit were kind and inviting.

The Montreal Museum traces the history of Montreal Island. It was built on top of the original settlement by the French settlers. We can see the progression of the city over the past centuries. Also, vduring the digs, they found old artifacts dating about 4000 years. There are many artifacts to be seen, you should plan a few hours to enjoy the site.

So glad we went here. The museum was shockingly un-crowded for a Saturday afternoon. The layout of the museum is excellent and super easy to navigate by the arrow stickers on the floor - if you follow them, you'll see everything! My favorite exhibits were the multimedia generations show (definitely see this!!), Crossroads Montreal, and Memory Collector. While I was excited to have the opportunity to learn extensively about the history of Montreal, I was extremely impressed with the archeological displays at the museum. For example, you can walk through a sewer tunnel that was preserved, and see what remained of the original foundation of the building that had been in the spot where the museum was eventually built! It does not seem common for such large pieces of old city architecture to be intact, so this wss a really unique aspect of the museum. I think my favorite part, overall, was the multimedia generations show. Colored lights and video of Montreal residents spesking about their childhoods and ancestors' origins in Montreal were artfully projected over a mosaic of angular screens. Things to know if you're thinking of visiting: - no food is being served during the pandemic - they have some child-oriented exhibits that seemed pretty fun - buy a ticket ahead of time, as the capacity is restricted (you buy for a time slot) - the multimedia generations show happens a few times each day, but make sure you check if the time is for the French or English version (easily found on the website)

It was a nice experience for the kiddos. We saw the Pirate exhibit, which was pretty cool and had quite a few interactive games and such. The only thing I can say negative is that it was hard to find the entrance to get there, and it was cold outside. But overall, it was a great time

Start with a 30 minute multimedia presentation. It’s very well done and gives you a good overview history of Montreal. The archeology section is very interactive. If you have children, they will love it. We did not see the Egypt one.

An awesome museum, one of the best we've experienced. It traces the history of the city from the first settlement, to expansion over time. This includes the walls of the old city, some of which you can see up close. Others are protected by plexiglass. There are also multimedia as well as the static displays. I think we spent over 2 hours inside. There are 6 sections A-F, and you can choose your own route and pace. Stools are placed strategically, and in all multimedia spaces. Well worth the time.

Their collection was extensive. It was really cool how the original foundations of many historic buildings are there. For the features of the buildings harder to spot, projectors outlined them on the wall, including a description. There were many well done videos, including showing where each structure was On the foundation, as well as the settlement patterns of Montreal.

Spent a great 3 hours with the family on a Sunday afternoon. Best to purchase the family value for $52. Great information on the history of Montreal. Impressive pirate ship. Take your time touring and exploring, great value for the money and learning history. Many exhibits, and don't touch anything, or use flash while taking photos.

They had a viking exhibit while we were there. Was nice. I think the rest was very specific to Montreal, which may be the point and I'm missing it, but would have been nice to see a bit more variety of archaeology.

This was one of the most interesting museum experiences I’ve ever had. Their exhibits were super interesting and well detailed, the progression of Montreals development was very fascinating and definitely well laid out. It is a self led tour, so it was a little overwhelming, but other than that it was an amazing experiences.

It’s such a shame that it was only during my 4th trip to Montréal that I visited this museum. For $16 (youth pricing), this museum does huge justice to its name and playing a role in preserving Montréal’s rich heritage & culture. Expect to spend at least 2hours to cover the entire exhibition which ranges over 3 floors, 1 basement across 2 buildings. The informative staffs at this museum also made our visit worthwhile with their friendly nature who were never hesitant in sharing with us a brief history of the various topics that were related to the particular exhibit we were in. Kudos to the museum for doing an excellent job in its maintenance.

Great place to familiarize yourself with the origins of Montreal. Multiple focuses in one museum was nice. Small exhibit on local artist, larger focus on original settlement and growth of the area until modern times. I particularly liked the original sewer system as the lighting made for a cool experience.

We visited this wonderful museum while in Montreal and because I love archeological exhibits. This museum shows the beginnings of Montreal in the form of a dig. The footprint of the early city is exposed and protected. There was also a wonderful exhibit of artifacts from around the world.

Small underground museum with great interactive narration. It is quite an interesting way to show the history of Montreal. The two buildings with the temporary and permanent exhibitions connect, but with a wheelchair, there are areas that are very hard to access. The museum is generally fully accessible but also a bit hard to navigate. To note also that there are many doors that close at 4.45 not 5pm as advertised and the staff is eager to lock things up at 4.45pm. The full museum can take about 2 hours+ One more thing, I’ve noticed that many reviews mention that the staff is a bit cold and un-empathetic in the regular exhibit and we had a similar experience, this is why I am not ranking the museum higher.

One of the best museums I've ever been to. Helps that I love archaeology, but it's a great history of the city. The fact that you're right there where it all happened really adds to it. Amazing that they can talk about something and we can see it under our feet. Will definitely be back!

Superb museum with great historical information, immersive and interactive elements, and all-around presentation. The permanent exhibits trace the history of Montreal and the specific structures found at Pointe-a-Calliere starting from the original First Nations peoples to present day. You literally walk through history as you make your way through the museum and the foundations of the various buildings that were once there. Additionally, there's a section on pirates that's extremely interactive and aimed squarely at the younger set. I would highly recommend this to anyone visiting Montreal!

Hubby and I checked out this awesome museum on our last trip to Montreal. It’s so worth the visit. A couple of the exhibits were closed for maintenance but still so much to see and learn about Montreal. Highly recommend

The multimedia introduction presentation at the beginning was amazing. Well done! The museum itself offers a wide range of information. Some were repeated a few times and the directions are not clear/confusing. Nevertheless, a good museum.

  • 5/5 Maria G. 2 years ago on Google
This museum takes advantage of its historic location and takes you on a journey through Montréal’s past. Many of the exhibit halls are located below street level and feature portions of the old walls once surrounding the city. You can walk through a king stretch of the old sewer system that now connects two exhibition spaces. In one exhibit hall, you can walk on glass floors to look down on excavated parts of the old city. There are also many interactive displays which are made more Covid friendly because the staff provides each visitor with a little tool to use to press buttons instead of touching with your hands. Very beautiful and innovative museum

Nice museum, especially during the heat warning. Cool inside literally. Recommend in case your plan is to introduce your 8-10 years old to Archeology, History, etc. Thank you, museum.

Must visit if you love history and archaeology. The museum was built on the site of former royal insurance building and fort Ville-Marie, the first French settlement in Montreal. A variety of historical items from different periods and different cultures are on display. There is also a temporary exhibition on ancient Egypt, which also worth visiting. The museum also organizes the 18th century public market event every year at the end of August, which takes you back to the New France period. Great experience!

This museum really tells a story about the heart of Old Montreal. We got to see the original walls of the first built places in Montreal, and the exhibits were a lot of fun and interactive - perfect for families with children! We learned so much about the history of the first settlers and natives in Montreal, and would highly recommend going to the top floor to get a bird eye view of the city. We also recommend using the elevators since walking around can be a little tricky to navigate (as recommended by our tour guide!) Definitely worth visiting!

Loved it! So much history - well presented. Tunnel, great variety of exhibits, interactive activities. Pleasant informative staff. A must see!

  • 5/5 David G. 6 months ago on Google
The museum was absolutely tremendous. Each floor held something new to capture the attention and imagination. The temporary Egypt exhibition was particularly enthralling as it concentrated more on the common man than that of the pharos and royalty... while also allowing some attention to the gods of ancient Egypt. It was 10 out of 10 excellence. There is an exhibition on the history or montreal and the influences of both Britain and France, as well as The degradation of forestry and nature which is just honestly so depressing, yet still incredibly fascinating and eye opening. On top of this the views from the tower allow you to look out across the old port and its just sublime...one nice touch on the tower was the view finders that provide an accurate target for many of the massive architectural accomplishments on the montreal landscape. 👌

I loved this museum. It's an awesome and the technology which is used made the history of Montreal more interesting. I highly recommend visiting it. You will have a great learning experience about the history of Montreal. You can reserve your ticket online for $24 for adult, youth (13-30) $17, child (5-12) $8 and kid less than 4 years is free, or you can get a family ticket by $50.

Visited the museum during my trip to Montreal recently. Lots of interesting exhibit and fascinating history as well as displays that are good. The museum is divided into sections a talks about a few topics such as history of the city of Montreal, VIA Rail, etc. A lot of reading is what one would expect from their visit but overall it was fun!

  • 5/5 Tara M. 2 years ago on Google
Very enjoyable visit! The displays are very informative while being cleverly put together and visually interesting. There are some that are very child friendly and interactive and some more adult appropriate. Would recommend a visit to those who enjoy history or even just fun visuals. Staff were friendly and helpful in either French or English.

Montreal's best museum. When you think of archaeological museums in Europe, you get a very different picture. The museum uses technology to make the history of Montreal more interesting. You don't want to miss the exhibitions. I was lucky to see the temporary train and pirates exhibitions. I missed Peru and Egypt (few years ago), but I'm excited for next year's exhibitions.

I recently visited the Pointe-à-Callière Museum in Montreal and I must say that I was thoroughly impressed with the exhibits and displays. The museum is dedicated to the history and archaeology of Montreal, and it does an excellent job of showcasing the city's rich cultural heritage. Upon arrival, I had a bit of a strange encounter with the receptionist. We had a bit of a debate about how to write the number 86. I had initially thought she said "80 and 6," while she insisted that she had said "86." It was a bit of a confusing start to my visit, but thankfully, it didn't detract from the overall experience. The museum is divided into several different sections, each of which explores a different aspect of Montreal's history. One of my favorite exhibits was the one dedicated to the city's founding and early history. It was fascinating to see how the city evolved from a small trading post to the bustling metropolis that it is today. Another highlight for me was the section of the museum dedicated to Montreal's underground city. As someone who loves urban exploration, it was amazing to see all the different tunnels and passageways that crisscross beneath the city. Overall, I highly recommend a visit to the Pointe-à-Callière Museum in Montreal. Despite my initial confusion with the receptionist, the museum itself is a fantastic destination for anyone interested in the history and culture of this vibrant city.

This place is incredible. There is a huge range of exhibits from the archeological excavation of original point buildings to Montreal history and special exhibitions about pirates and vikings. Clever use of multimedia without being over the top. We really enjoyed it, but make sure you can spare a few hours to see everything.

  • 5/5 Patrick L. 1 year ago on Google
I really loved this place. They achieved the near impossible: they turned nerdy archaeology into something engaging and fun. The building itself is also noteworthy, especially the reconstruction of the city's first sewer. Special call-out for the helpful and friendly staff, who have advanced training in history, they really made our visit.

A must visit place when you are in Montreal. This place not only shows history of how Montreal was settled by French and English settlers but also indigenous people life experiences. Artifacts from past were really amazing. Also visuals and light work was amazing and very intuitive. Viking section is really cool.

Very good museum. I spent a couple of hours and could have spent more. The main focus is archaeology and the development of the city of Montreal, but there are also sections about circuses (many costumes), a pirate ship for kids and a temporary exhibition about the Italian community (Dec. 2021). All panels are in both English and French.

Amazing! Every Montrealer should visit at least once. Plan for several hours for the full experience. Do not miss the Memory Collector, Where Montreal Began and Multimedia Show permanent exhibits. Also, the Italian Montreal temporary exhibit currently underway is really good. Admission prices are very affordable. This museum is great for tourists and locals alike. Highly recommend.

Pretty nice museum , known to be the largest archeological museum in Canada Unfortunately, two sites have been closed due to recent fire while the main permanent exposition is easy to cover. One of the best museums I’ve ever been to. You’ll learn so much about Montreal’s history. You’ll see so many different art pieces, activations, interactive games, there’s just so much. This is an amazing place, with so much interesting history. It is actually located on the exact spot of a lot of the history it talks about. The room with the glass floor so you can see the old ruins underneath the building is incredible. Walking through the old sewers was my favourite! The only downside is that the layout is so confusing. At first we couldn’t find the exhibits, and then once we did we got lost trying to leave.

One of the top museums I've ever visited! I love Montreal, and this museum is one of the reasons. The presentation of history is so fresh and engaging. The museum is literally built over ongoing excavations of parts of the original town settlement. It's mind-blowing! You can look down into excavations of original walls and taverns as you wander through the otherwise thoroughly modern presentation of facts and history, complete with fun lighted tunnels and audio presentations. If you have any interest in history at all, you will LOVE this museum, and if you don't, you just may develop an interest as a result of the wonderful exhibitions.

I visited in September, returning after having been several years ago, and really enjoyed it. The experience of learning the history of the city that sometimes happened right where we stood is very cool. I also appreciated the content on the Indigenous peoples of the area as well.
