A really special Catholic shrine that is worth visiting, especially at sunset. There were many people gathered on the front steps together "worshipping" by looking at the city as the sun set, talking, laughing, evening having a secret drink in the case of a few young people. We enjoyed spending 90 minutes and the brutal architecture. I think the organ is my favorite feature, after the crucifix behind the altar. I would love to attend a service sometime to hear the music and acoustics! The blue chapel is eerily beautiful and made me reconsider colored lights in sacred settings. It's really beautiful at night! Everyone was so kind, from the shuttle driver to the people visiting. You can walk up the hill but I recommend the shuttle.

It's really a great place. Everyone should visit it once. Awesome landscape view in every weather. The crypt is really beautiful and very peaceful. The whole vibe is amazing. Although I am not Christian but the whole experience of lightening the candle in the crypt and praying was out of the world.

This majestic church was one of the highlights of our visit to Mont Royal. It's interior is much more modern looking than other basilicas, and it's newer of course, but no less beautiful or grand. There's lots to see, different rooms and sanctums on different levels, each with its own character and story. Spend $2 and get the guide. And be sure to light a candle in the gorgeous Votive Chapel.

The building is truly impressive and commands attention from its perch atop Mount Royal. From the outside, the architecture is grand and stately, making for an impressive sight to behold. And the view of the city from the top of the mountain is simply breathtaking. However, I have to say that the inside of the building was not quite as exciting as I had hoped. While there were certainly some interesting features, such as the beautiful stained glass windows and the impressive pipe organ, I did not find the interior to be as visually captivating as the exterior. Visitors should not expect to see Gothic artworks or elaborate decorative features inside the building. That being said, I still feel that St Joseph's Oratory is well worth a visit. The grand structure and stunning views alone make it a must-see attraction for anyone visiting Montreal

This basilica has my heart!! Brace for a long review because I want to share my experience! Also, went during covid and on a Sunday so some things may be different depending on when you visit. So, right when you enter there is a parking lot which is free parking on Sundays. You can park there and take a shuttle bus up to the top right to the entrance of the top level of the basilica. Or, you can walk up, going up the stairs enjoying the view! We attended the mass at 11:30 AM on Sunday, because of covid there is only one entrance to the basilica for the mass. If you don’t want to attend the mass, you can enter through another entrance which had a huge line as they are only allowing a couple of people at a time. Once inside, you can access the gift shop, level 3 has the exhibits of St. Brother Andre, level 1 has the votive chapel with all the candles, the tomb of brother Andre and the crypt church! From the outside, there is like a terrace from which people can access the Garden of the stations of the cross. It’s also the perfect spot to watch the sunset! The views are just incredible. Also, must visit the little chapel beside the basilica, very beautiful. You can also drive up in your own car, they have a few parking spots at each level. Overall, I loved this place, the beauty of it all is that it attracts people of all religions and backgrounds - the power of St. Joseph! Definitely will be back.

Beautiful place of worship for every Catholic in or visiting Montreal. The architecture itself is breathtaking and the serenity of the place makes it worth a detour from the bustling energy of the city. It's only a 10 mins drive from downtown. They had a special nativity scene exhibition during the holidays which makes it fun for kids and adults.

Amazing architecture, history, artifacts and art. Not to mention the spiritual presence there. You can park on site and walk up the hill or take a shuttle bus up the steep road trail. The view from above and below is spectacular. Learn about the interesting life of Father Andre. It's $5 for parking and a donation is appreciated. You can ask the spirit of brother Andre to say a prayer for any loved ones that are I'll or for yourself. You will not be disappointed Ina visit to this amazing international landmark.

This is an awe-inspiring structure that showcases remarkable architectural beauty. The grandeur of its design, with towering spires and intricate details, leaves a lasting impression. The interior of the oratory exudes a sense of tranquility and serenity, creating a peaceful atmosphere for visitors to find solace and inner peace. The panoramic views of the Montreal downtown from the observation deck are simply stunning, offering a picturesque backdrop for capturing unforgettable moments. Whether you are seeking spiritual solace or simply appreciating the beauty of the surroundings, St. Joseph Oratory is a place that captivates both the heart and the eyes. Don't miss the opportunity to visit this remarkable landmark and experience the sense of wonder it evokes.

Fantastic place to visit and surprisingly, it is free admission. Parking is $5 is you want to park close by, otherwise you can park on the street. The place is under renovation (exterior side), so there is a shuttle bus to bring you up. There is also an outdoor terrace that let you see a spectacular view of the city.

Absolutely a must visit place. The church upstairs was stunning and gorgeous. As well as the below church where you can feel the time and have prayers with candles. The view was amazing from the top.

A Gorgeous church in Montreal. Lots of people visit here to watch the sun set. I couldn't take stay longer though. Google maps shows a wrong route to enter into parking lot beind the church. Even the satellite map is not updated. They have closed that route. You need to find a route to the parking lot from in front of the church. In the evening time, it is really beautiful. Totally worth the visit and the wait for the sunset. Highly recommend place for first time visitors to Montreal.

Really cool place to visit if you're in Montreal! Actually an oratory which is really huge and the interiors are really cool! Very very high ceilings with beautiful long windows. Well made sculptures present which brings out the vibe of calmness! You can sit here for an hour and now get bored! I totally understand why it's a great place to complete your prayers!

Amazing story of a beautiful church, with wonderful history of healing ❤️‍🩹. We had a guide walk us through the whole church as I wanted the whole history, Not just to wander alone. Our guide she explained all the healing and the testimonials, how the father started in a small room, and lived there till he died. How his body is buried in the Church including his heart ❤️ which is on display which someone stole the heart held it for ransom for money, but later returned it when no one would pay the Ransom fee. Loved the Water coming out of the stone, candles. Be sure to say prayers there. Enjoy The view of the city is wonderful Go slow and if you can Hire the guide for $6 Worth every penny.

You can the a shuttle bus from the parking lot right up to entrance. It is quite a walk up the hill. It has a great little gift shop as well as a food court. Lots to see. Certainly worth the visit

For those who are religious, it is a place of great faith, extremely beautiful and calm. Its churches are well maintained and beautiful. And for the non-religious, it is still worth knowing due to the monumental architecture of this place. It has a beautiful garden to visit in other seasons other than winter.

One of the most beautiful buildings I have ever been to. This place is a must-visit if you are coming to Montreal. Just be prepared for lots of walking to make your way up. Make sure to visit the oratory at the top floor as some people miss it!

This basilica is just gorgeous! Situated at a higher elevation, the Saint Joseph’s Oratory stands out really well. The walk up can be a bit challenging for some but it’s manageable. Once your get up, the view was amazing. Due to Covid, they only have one entry point which goes to through the gift shop and when you’re inside, you’ll be fascinated with how beautiful the basilica is! The staff were very courteous and helpful throughout our visit.

My Mom loved being here. She was happy to go to mass. They had mass about 4 times a day. They have a credit card machine for the candles if you don’t have cash! Still have the crutches on display and there are 2 churches open. No entrance fee and they have an escalator ( and elevators) to got to the crypt. Also a big gift store.

It is such a beautiful church. I loved the architecture. They have 6 levels but some levels are not accessible. They also have a panoramic view of the city from the 3rd level. Currently they have some construction going on and getting a parking spot is difficult. They provide shuttle service every 10-15 minutes if parking is not available near the church. They also have a small cafe in case you want to grab a bite. They request for a $5 donation at the entrance except on Sundays. I visit this place every time I visit Montreal.

Very peaceful and calm , we didn’t get to attend the mass unfortunately.. but the church is beautiful and serene . Access for stroller and wheelchair by lift which was very helpful. The church has no entry fee , highly recommend the gift shop . The holy oil is something you must buy and the beautiful rosary and artefacts . There is a cafeteria inside as well . Do not miss the heart ♥️ of the saint preserved. Have a blessed visit .

One of the bucket list place to visit in Montreal. Place provide you parking place where you have to pay but you don't have to walk from the street. There is free shuttle service which will take you up on the mountain on the basilica entrance. require at least 2 hours when you explore and see all the sculpture and details inside. Worth to spend time outside on the stairs from where you can see the whole city bird view which is similar like mount royal but this place give you old city view.

We went in December 2022 , They have shuttle bus to bring you up to the Church. It was frizzing day so thank God they have a transportation. The Basilica is pretty big very impressive you can burn candles and pray. Outside they have a beautiful view so you can take nice pictures. Inside is a lot to see. I enjoy it .

Turned out to be surprisingly amazing. It's free to visit too. We paid $5 for parking at the entrance up the hill. You can possibly find free parking on the street and trek up. The basilica is beautiful and provides very beautiful scenic views of the city of Montreal. It's very green all around. Well worth a visit.

A beautiful church located on Mont Royal and accessible by either a short 10 min walk or a free shuttle service to the top via Cedar Crescent road and going through the Kingston road. There are typically three shuttles that go to the top and are completely free. The entry to the church is completely free as well. The view from the top is exquisite and the best time to visit would be early morning or during the sunset.

Just gorgeous. Massive and you wonder how they built this feat on highlands overlooking Montreal. There is a small museum, great outdoor scenes of Montreal and a magnificent church with such beauty and simplicity at the same time. Would recommend people to take the shuttle bus up to St. Joseph’s, it’s a 10-12 mins walk upwards but quite steep and if difficult for older audience (or those with knee issues).

Outstanding architectural feat with a good overlooking view of Montreal. We visited on a tour to make it easier to travel to this location and were not disappointed by its history, significance & design. The inside is 60s in design, and so not as colourful as many churches of other times, but still it’s various levels and character shine through in the building size and complexity!

A must visit if you’re in Montreal! Quant and peaceful with stellar architecture. There was a construction up front so we had to walk a bit to get there, but even the walk was so beautiful. Plus, the deck has an amazing view for photographs. Definitely one of my favourite spots from my visit to the city. Highly recommended!

There are 2 church in the same place, at the bottom there's construction going on right now so you might like the view from below but it's beautiful either way but if you go up stairs there's a shop and there's another church on the third floor which beautiful in and out. I've been a lot of churches in my life and I'm sorry to say that there was nothing special about this one expect for it's size. When you enter, you don't feel like you are entering Holy ground. It's just felt like a massive open space and mainly impressive for that reason. There were certain parts that were really nice and beautiful. My apologies but this my humble opinion.

The Church is outstanding, I met a local lady who was really friendly and almost like a tour guide for our group. The church has seperated levels and each one serve different purposes. There was also the anniversary at the time we arrived and they served us some cake and drinks. On the left of the church is a small garden which was so beautiful. I would recommend to go see the small church which located nearby, its also phenomenal.

Although it as old as the Notre Dame in old Montreal this is just as good and beautiful as Notre Dame. The grounds and the entire outside is in construction right now. The inside of the church is still visitable and no adverse experience. You have to take a free shuttle from the parking lot to the entrance So well made and absolutely amazing. Very well maintained and very peaceful inside. A must spot when you visit Montreal.

Beautiful cathedral. The true gem is downstairs in the crypt. Where all the actual candles are lit and where the display of canes and crutches are displayed. The main catherdral above is very monumentalist and feels cold with the exception of the wood carved statues of the apostles

The stunning scale of Saint Joseph's Oratory is matched by its history and significance to the City of Montreal and the Catholic Church. While the myriad of escalators that whisk people up and down the many, many levels of architecture and topography of the site seem out of place, one might be thankful they replace what would be a copious, and possibly access restricting, amount of steep stairs. While the entire experience was enjoyable, I felt most moved in the Crypt and Votive (Candle) Chapel portion of the Observatory. The warmth and aroma of the burning candles embraced my senses and left me a little emotional. Definitely recommend a trip here, not only for devout Christians but, for anyone who can appreciate the period architecture and energy provided.

The largest church dedicated to Saint Joseph in the world, this place lives up to expectations. The view is great, they have mass that counts for your weekly mass requirements, the gift shop has rosaries, and if you can’t do stairs it’s totally cool. They have 5 escalators that I could count, and multiple elevators. During the construction, there was a free shuttle that we could take to the top. I couldn’t find any signage that said how often it runs, but it came after about 30 minutes of waiting so that’s not too bad. In short, this was amazing to see!

This Oratory is really huge and you must visit this place when in Montreal. There was construction going on last year when I visited so I'm assuming they are expanding the entrance. The church offers a convenient shuttle service from the parking area, making it easily accessible. Once inside, you'll be captivated by the stunning beauty of the church. Despite visiting on a Canada day, when it tends to be crowded, the church's architecture allows for a serene and undisturbed worship experience. Additionally, it's worth noting that entrance to the church is free, while there is a reasonable $5 fee for parking.

Must visit attraction if you go to Montreal. Place was under construction, however there was a shuttle bus in service. Gift shop had wonderful items and books for sale. Inside the church, I didnt see any discipline. People were busy taking selfies and photos (incl me) which I personally believe should be limited, respecting those who come to worship and have a peaceful time.

Good looking church with a view of the city. It is currently under some major renovation. Parking can be difficult, as building materials are everywhere. There is a 5 dollars parking fee. Small gift shop and a cafe on premise. The museum demands a separate entrance fee. For atheists or non-christians, walking the ground and enjoy the view would be a good enough experience.

The grand architecture is stunning. From a high position, you can overlook the entire city of Montreal. The front square is under renovation, and although there is a parking lot, there is a long queue. Parking lots elsewhere are a bit far away. But it's unique and still worth a visit.

Impressive oratory of st Joseph. The front entrance/garden seems to be under construction. But it won't affect your experience. You can take a bus on the right side (when facing the oratory) of the main entrance. Although it should run every 10-15 min., sometimes they can be very late and in the winter evening it can take a long time before it comes. After Sun down, it gets very windy and cold. Do not miss the crypt under the main chapel. It's not easy to find following the sign. But your will be well rewarded when you find it.

I visited Saint Joseph’s Oratory this weekend. This place is an amalgamation of architecture, tranquility and history. The city view from the top of the Oratory is fantastic and inside there are two churches at different floors, both has a unique view and design. During winter you can take free shuttle services from the gate because it’s bit difficult to walk on a steep road especially when it is windy and snowy.

Been here numerous times. Though first time since pandemic and was happy to see everyone adhering to social distancing guidelines, as well as one way walk paths throughout the building. Can't wait to see all the construction done.

Beautiful views! For all the fitness freaks, due to construction you cannot walk from Queen Mary up the middle, those steps are being replaced. Start from Frere Andre, walk up and around the construction, and find a dark, curved staircase. Or you walk beside the cars on Kingston Road , which takes you right to the parking lot & landing viewpoint, very steep & good workout

Interesting spot- Worth a visit if you have the time. It's by donation and relatively self guided. We wandered around and walked through the exhibits. Lots of gift shops + opportunities to buy things from here.

  • 5/5 winnifred c. 2 years ago on Google
You can enter from queen Mary road, and take the shuttle bus up to the top. There is also an option for all day parking, not too expensive. Lots of construction going on but, it's all for us to have a greater experience in the future, so beautiful and peaceful.

What an amazing experience. The oratory is immense and truly a place to connect with the Universe. Bright, overwhelmingly huge and so much that see and experience.

The Montreal Saint Joseph Oratory is a captivating spiritual landmark that left me in awe. Nestled atop Mount Royal, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city. The grandeur of the basilica's architecture is truly remarkable, adorned with intricate details and stunning stained glass windows. Its serene atmosphere exudes tranquility, inviting visitors to reflect and find solace. Exploring the oratory's vast grounds, I discovered the peaceful gardens and the touching votive chapel. The aura of devotion and reverence is palpable, as pilgrims gather to seek comfort and inspiration. The oratory's rich history and the legacy of Saint Brother André are beautifully showcased, adding depth to the experience. Montreal Saint Joseph Oratory is an extraordinary place that stirs the soul and leaves an indelible impression.

What a beautiful building! There's a lot to see inside including a museum and a gift shop. We were a bit confused at first as to how to enter the grounds as the main entrance is under construction but there are signs up directing you to the left where a shuttle bus waits to drive people up and down the winding road to the Oratory. Entry is completely free which was a pleasant surprise. The view from the terrass is really nice, and make sure not to miss the original Chapel just outside the parking lot!

It is the place you need to visit if you go to Montreal. you can see part of Montreal above the church. It's also free to visit and you can pay for parking around $5 Saint Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal is a Roman Catholic minor, Basilica and National Shrine. The building is impressive. The Dome height is 97 meters. They also have gift shops with Uniq items and books.

Beautiful structure and grounds, but in the middle of what appears to be a construction and renovation project that kind of diminishes the grandeur of the whole thing, from the outside anyway. Very impressive from the inside, though. Construction notwithstanding, one helluva... uh sorry, I mean heckuva... view from the hill!

The church is really big and you can park close to the entrance. Personally speaking the outside is better than the inside, see the picture and judge yourself. The view of the city from there is very nice, you can see how big Montreal is.

Nice Catholic Church. Very well maintained. It has an awesome architecture. Good spots to see a great view of Montreal. They celebrate sunday masses in two languages (English & French ). They have two huge parking lots. One in the ground and another one above the hill. If you park the vechile in the found floor, they provide shuttle to take people above the hill. Staffs are so friendly, They are guiding people very well. Nice and must place to visit

The best church i saw in my life. The old french style is marvellous to see. It’s a huge church and the view from the top is spectacular. I would recommend everyone to go see it, if you are in montreal. The parking is just 5 dollars. There is washrooms and shop inside.

I loved the church. I love the vibe it gives of peace and sacrifice. It tells us stories of Saint Joseph and his kindness, humbleness and his love and devotion towards his family and God. It's a must visit place when you are in Montreal. The church is located on the top, ( like on the hill) so we have to walk and reach there. Also the church has a facility of a bus which takes the people and drops them at the church and similarly brings them down. They have souvenir shops and restaurants as well.

First time visit. Lot's of construction going on but otherwise still quiet. Wasn't overly crowded. The tiny museum was not really worth the $6/person. Overall it has a breathtaking view.

Impressive, both from the outside and from the inside. The panoramic view of the city is also nice, but not breathtaking (I was a bit disappointed). We came by car/van on a tour, walking all the way up there must be somewhat tiring especially if it's very hot. Recommended, though.

Looks great from a distance and even better up close. Was like visiting a a castle from a different time. I have to admit, the walk to the top was a bit on the longer side because of all the construction in front of it when I passed by. But overall was a great experience. I'm sure it will look even better once the construction is over.

November 1st, 2015 First time visiting Saint Joseph's Oratory was in November of 2015 and since then we come back for worship and adoration every chance we get. Saint Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal is a magnificent and awe-inspiring place of worship. It's amazes me everytime I visit. One of the city's most impressive religious buildings, the basilica has a history that began with André Bessette, a humble and compassionate man who was instrumental in the founding of the oratory. It's a spectacular place to visit. The oratory is a masterpiece of architecture, with its massive dome, intricate sculptures, and beautiful glass-stained windows. The interior of the oratory is equally impressive, with its stunning artwork, soaring ceilings and intricate mosaics. The atmosphere inside the oratory is one of peace and tranquility, making it a perfect place for reflection and prayer in peace. The largest shrine dedicated to Saint Joseph in the world, Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal receives about two million visitors and pilgrims each year from all around the world. Overall, St. Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal is a must visit destination when in Montreal for anyone interested in art, architecture, and spirituality. It's a place of beauty, peace, and inspiration that will leave a long lasting impression on anyone who takes the time to visit. Daily parking costs $5.00 and there is a free shuttle to the door. Free parking on Sunday. No entrance ticket is needed.

Saint Joseph's Oratory is a beautiful place rich with history. Getting in is free and is a big place with lots to see. It took about 1-2 hours to see everything. Go here if you are religious or like the artistry or history, otherwise pass it that's not your thing.

Beautiful architecture and a very peaceful and spiritual place to visit. Amazing views of Montreal from the two lookouts. Parking was $5. Oratory is fully accessible with elevators and escalators to all levels. Donations can be made through tap.

Beautiful church with an amazing view of Montreal. You can see a lot of the church for free. There's also a museum for a charge. They provide a free shuttle to and from the church--it's quite the hike uphill. It's easy to get to the church by subway and bus.
