Absolutely must-visit if you're in Montreal, especially if you have kids. Went on a rainy day but still had a great time. Their entrance seems to have changed from what Google Maps shows - it takes you to parking 2 while the right place should be parking 1 which across the next street. However, the museum has mentioned this in a poster placed at parking 2 to guide visitors to the right place. The ticket price was reasonable. They have this old fashion toy train that takes you around and gives you a glimpse of how trains functioned in olden days. The gentleman driving it was very jovial and friendly. The main museum is great as they have life size locomotives at display with interesting facts mentioned about them. Some of these, mainly cars, not locomotives, you can also see from inside. Great fun and very informative. There's a lunch room and some snacks are available at the gift shop but it's recommended that you carry some food, especially if you have kids along. Parking was decent. Definitely recommended

They have a very wide variety of trains, and very interesting historical information on the various signs throughout. The gift shop has a good variety of products and honestly very good prices. If you or someone you love is into trains and their history, it's a great experience!

I've gone more than once, and it's always fun! If you like trains and their history, you should go. They have Canadian trains from many eras, including trams. They also have some activities for the younger ones! I went to see old sleeper trains :)

A wonderful trip through time and the history of trains. The restored condition of some of these engines is amazing. Glad this place exists!

There are priceless exhibits here but very poorly organized. The staff are rude and seem to have little interest in explaining the historic significance to the visitors. They seem to be reluctantly welcoming paying guests. I wish the Smithsonian Institution were running this museum. Then it would be worth visiting multiple times.

What an incredible place! Everything is well maintained and clean. The staff are super friendly. Leave yourself a few hours to be able to read the information and take in the sights. The diorama train collection alone is worth the trip. My only complaint is that the lighting was dim. It made reading difficult. So perhaps bring a cell phone light/flashlight to be able to see certain items better.

Great museum for a great price. Kids loved having to do challenges before 'entering' the museum all about train safety. Trains kept husband happy too. Wide variety of trains to see. You're able to go inside some, under some. One has been transformed into a play train for kids. The miniature train ride was sold to us as a small figure of 8, but was so much more! Bridges and tunnel. We didn't even mind getting wet! Then we finished up with a street car ride round the museum. Gift shop was well stocked and reasonably priced with everything train you could think off. Restaurant not open bit we always take a picnic.

We want there the first Sunday of the month which was Free. The closest parking was full at 11 AM so you have to walk more than 10 min in the cold specially difficult with young children. Many big trains, small one is running in circle, nice decorations for Christmas. There is a cafeteria for lunch with high chair so you can bring your own lunch. I recommend

Fantastic museum for locals and travelers alike! Staff were bilingual/multilingual (French and English) with a wealth of knowledge and were truly a pleasure to speak to. Our tour was self guided, but maps, signs, and employees ensured we were able to see the full indoor and outdoor museum exhibits. Staff were always available and eager to provide directions, answer questions, point out interesting details, and share stories. The "Streetcar" is highly recommended - this tour allowed us to ride a stunningly restored passenger train to each site on the property. The whole museum could be accessible via walking, but hopping on and off the streetcar was a fun, informative, and immersive experience! We stayed at the museum for about three hours and enjoyed every minute. Bring snacks, drinks, and sunscreen if you visit in summer.

Found this place by chance on the net. What a find. Young and old will get a kick from this place. What a treasure cove with a warehouse full of trains from all the time period. A walk into history, helpful staff filled with knowledge willing to share. Buy your tickets online. Well organized. You can visit may trains inside and walk through them and some only outside. Would highly recommend. Entrance and ticket booth have been moved 100 meters past the old entrance where the train is displayed outside.

The GPS brought us to the furthest parking lot. If this happens to you just walk down the street and on your left you will see the main parking lot. You have to walk over the bridge to the ticket booth. It was raining and muddy the day we went. The museum was magnificent. The first building we entered was a metal building with minimal lighting but the trains were really cool. The second building we entered blew our minds. The facility was awesome with lots and lots of trains inside. Many you could climb in an experience. We even got to see the underside of a train. This was by far one of the best train museums I have ever been drag to by my husband. Train enthusiasts of all ages will absolutely love this place. Great stop for us!! Worth the trip!

Absolutely stunning collection. Everything was super clean and well taken care of. (the outside stuff isn't in great condition due to weather and all that. But hey, what can you do?).

Google maps instructions lead us to the old Main entrance. It is a bit confusing because the sign that actually tells you where the new entrance is, is on a fence that has yellow tape blocking the entrance. We weren’t the only customers whom were confused. There were others that came after us parking in the same spot. Perhaps it was the huge model train in the parking lot that distracts you. There is also a sign on the train that tells you the main entrance is 100 m straight and then left. You can’t walk it! They should fix this. We finally found our way to the new main entrance parking lot. It is a bit of a hike from the parking to get to the main entrance (We cannot walk with little kids from the parking lot 2 to the main entrance) We booked our tickets online. We had to buy additional tickets to ride the trolley and the mini train. We place was nice. There are a lot of different trains and artifacts. The kids really enjoyed the unlimited trolley ride. They had a blast on the mini train. The place is pretty big. It took us about 3 hours to completely see everything. Which also included an hour lunch off site. Bring your own lunch as they didn’t have any food to purchase while we were there.

Indoor museum is excellent, tour guide was very knowledgeable and there was a large assortment of trains in excellent quality. The outdoor museum area would be more enjoyable with better signage. Miniature train was small and more for children but still totally enjoyable as an adult.

Well designed. The museum and the trains are so pretty. The parking lot needs more signs. The additional parking lot is very confusing. No signs to show how to find the museum after parking.

I loved the place. It is an interesting and fun activity for kids and people who love history and trains. You have a lot of train models to visit. A place for children to play and yo can do a little trip in train. I would love to have an option to eat there's the infrastructure, but it was closed the day I went. The place is nice but it could be much better if they make you live the experience some one telling an interesting story inside the train. Go inside and sit down in the royal train, etc

I recently visited the Canadian Railway Museum with my friends, and overall, it was a beautiful experience. The museum is a treasure trove for both kids and adults, showcasing the rich history of railways in Canada. However, there were a few aspects that could be improved upon. Firstly, finding the entrance to the museum was quite a challenge. The signage could be more prominent and informative, as it took us some time to navigate our way there. Clearer directions or more visible markers would greatly help visitors in locating the entrance more easily. Another area that could use some improvement is the friendliness and welcoming attitude of the employees. While I understand that working in a busy museum can be demanding, a warm and inviting atmosphere goes a long way in enhancing the visitor experience. It would be wonderful to see the staff smiling and readily available to assist and engage with visitors. Furthermore, the lighting inside the museum could be better. Some areas were dimly lit, making it difficult to fully appreciate the exhibits and read the accompanying information. Adjusting the lighting to ensure proper visibility throughout the museum would greatly enhance the overall experience for visitors. Despite these drawbacks, I must emphasize that the Canadian Railway Museum is truly a remarkable place. The collection of trains and artifacts is extensive, offering a captivating glimpse into Canada's railway heritage. The interactive displays and educational activities make it an enjoyable experience for kids, and even adults can't help but feel a sense of wonder and nostalgia. In conclusion, while the navigation to the entrance can be challenging, and the employees could be more welcoming and friendly, the Canadian Railway Museum remains a must-visit destination. The beautiful experience it provides for both children and adults, along with its rich historical significance, makes it well worth a visit. With some improvements in signage, staff attitude, and lighting, it has the potential to become an even more outstanding attraction.

It was fun for my 4 year old to see all the old trains but I felt like it was a bit repetitive and mundane. We rode the street car and the train. They're very short rides in uncomfortable trains. They didn't let us take our pockit stroller on the street car (even though we had it folded down to a briefcase size and could fit on my lap). They said it would somehow damage the street car. Park in P1 if you can as it is closer than P2 to the main entrance. I'm not sure it's worth it unless you're a train enthusiast. If your kids want to ride a train just take the on the new REM system and they'll be just as happy.

Wonderful collection of old engines etc in 2 huge buildings. No food court since COVID so pack in or get hungry. Our tour leader was great, then 2 more hrs on our own.

We visited the Canadian Railway Museum during the 1st Sunday of December. The museum wasn't crowded. The trains were decorated with Christmas ornaments and lights. The Christmas spirit was all in the air. We had a tour with a guide into one of the closed trains. They alternate the tours depending on the season. Moreover, the kids enjoyed DIY workshop in decorating a small train as well as taking a train ride simulation. Unfortunately, we missed the Christmas cookie decorations this time. They say there will be Santa's visit and the Polar Express movie during the following weeks. So, if you are interested in taking part in these activities, just follow the Museum's website. All information is there. Overall, we had an amazing time. This is the place definitely worth visiting !

It's a great place to visit and bring the kids. Miniature trains, real trains, and an outdoor mini train that the kids can take a ride on. My kids loved it. Takes a good 2 to 3 hours to see it all. Highly recommend.

Nice little museum on Trains. I found the indoor museum more interesting with alot of trains to see. However, I found the price is a little bit high for non residents. There is only the trains exposition, no entertainment or tour guide. You may have running shoes on to go there because the road to the museum is only rocks. And it is also very hard to navigate a stroller to there.

Great place to visit if you have any interest in trains and or canadian transport history. Lots of trains indoors and outside and several that you can go inside of. You have an opportunity to ride a vintage streetcar around the grounds (for a small additional charge).

Lots of cool trains/ engines/ tracks w history. If you into those, you are in the right place! If you take your little ones for a jolly great time? Think twice The service is horrible. It was confusing to find the main building, Then all the train rides require extra charge( not a lot) but all cancelled due to storm, even though the forecast says thunder will stop completely soon( it proved eventually it stopped after whats forecasted) still, they wont prepare to open or sell tickets to you, We waited waited cus the little one came all the way for a ride, then guess what after 2 hr hanging around killing time with nothing( no other entertainment besides watching the trains) they told us, power went out…. At that point we just walked out…. Such a disappointment! A place like this should have more kids entertaining set ups, like little indoor rides, indoor plays…. Its so tedious yet inconvenient( looooooong walk to anything)

I have been trying to get to this museum for years and I finally was able to. The museum isn't in the best location and isn't easy to get to without a car. I took Uber from the Queen Elizabeth Hotel which was 40$ each way. That said, they do have an excellent collection of equipment and the museum is very clean and well looked after.

Great museum! I recommend it not only to lovers of technology, but also to everyone who is interested in the history and history of Montreal as well. Excellent expositions, you can enter some locomotives and wagons. For those who like to take pictures, a huge selection of objects. For the youngest visitors, train and tram rides are provided! I especially note the friendly, competent and very positive staff! Thanks a lot!

Went there on a Sunday in Christmas time. We planned our visit with 5 children so that they can have a magical time. The museum in itself is awesome however the way it is managed is very bad. On Sundays they close at 5 as any other business. However, what they don't tell you that all everything closes at 3:30! The girl sitting at the information booth gave us wrong information and didn't even mention when things close! She pointed out that Santa is somewhere and we ran all across to see him before he goes only to find out she had no clue where santa was! The big train ride was closed ( the website did not mention that) and we paid extra $ for each one of us to ride the miniature train that closed without us even knowing! And there was also a coloring activity for kids that had very limited window and closed before 3:30. The cafeteria was also closed at 3:30, it is like they don't want to work! Oh they also don't answer the phone! We tried to learn about the different activities they have but no body would answer so we made a one hour trip for this experience. Absolutely don't recommend. I hope management changes soon !

Very impressed by the amount and quality of the locomotives. Great display of Canadian railway history and the tram ride really brings you back in time. Go visit and support this museum.

Amazing place, kids will like it, but first, the entrance is in the 1 st parking lot P1 so pass the black train on the left and pass Tim Horton, then turn left, the Mini train might be the most important part so make sure you buy the tkt for it from the entrance.

  • 5/5 Helene S. 1 year ago on Google
Loved the place ❤️ Went around all premises. Read interesting facts about history. Rode the tramway a few times (and the mini train). Only peeve is we came from the north, saw a big train with parking and google said to park there but entrance is pretty far to the south and main ticket office is also pretty far from there. So look for parking number 1. Stayed 2 1/2 hours, worth the money!

  • 5/5 Samara C. 2 years ago on Google
As an adult with zero interest in trains, I found it semi-interesting to see older trains and get to go inside some. My child (loves trains) was in heaven. He was excited to go into every one that he was allowed to go in and peak through the windows in the others. We will have to go back in the summer time to see the outdoor exhibits.
