Worth it! As someone who's not an art geek, I ended up spending over 2 hours here - even though many areas were closed (I went on the first day of re-opening after the Omicron wave). There's a lot to see and be amazed by. In fact, the more you look at the exhibits the more you appreciate them. The building has its interiors creatively designed, has plenty of seating, either for resting or for just sitting and feasting your eyes on intriguing, beautiful art. Overall, this place was time well-spent. Be sure to check with the staff about what's open; a few sections have been closed off due to COVID restrictions. You have permanent exhibits on one side of the main building which is best viewed from the highest floor to the lowest, that way you can appreciate the evolution of European art through the different eras (Renaissance, Baroque, Romantic, Modern). I don't know my eras well, but if you do, you'll easily lose track of time. The other side of the main building has more of a mélange of eras and styles: modern, ancient, interactive, contemporary, fine, etc. There are hidden gems on every floor, although personally, I enjoyed the permanent exhibits (the eras). Note: the discounted entry ($12) on Wednesday evenings gives you limited access. It's just one floor of the permanent exhibits.

This is a huge spacious museum consisting of 5 pavilions all connected underground. It features Canadian as well as international artists. It has more impressionist paintings than most museums. The Arts of One World display is very interesting. One day is not enough to see everything!!!

One could easily spend a day here. There are five different buildings with paintings and art forms across the decades. I was mesmerized with the temporary installation and the permanent installations are equally noteworthy. If you are looking to educate yourself or just immerse yourself in art, this is the place to be! It made my Montreal trip even more meaningful.

Absolutely loved this museum. Amazing collections. Loved the care and attention taken to not only provide artists names and dates but many (most?) of the pieces included a paragraph or two explanation about the artist and/or the piece - very informative and interesting to read. They enjoy having many square feet of exhibition space and getting between the various buildings is relatively easy. We spent four hours and felt like we saw most of what we wanted to see. There was a really well done exhibit on the works of Marisol - who I knew nothing about before (I’m relatively ignorant in art) and found it very interesting. Kudos to the curators and staff here. Highly recommend!

Fantastic museum with exquisite art pieces. We bought tickets at the door and took our time walking through the many floors and areas. There was a suprising amount of ancient Egyptian and Asian artifacts which were well presented as well. There was so much here that I almost feel like it warrants 2 separate trips simply because of the amount of time it takes to read through everything. Definitely worth checking out!

Some parts were closed due to restoration but there is no discount on ticket. We are still paying the same amount. That is a minus. Another issue was at light orientations. Especially at the 3rd floor gallery (1800’s) lighting placement creates reflections on paintings which makes harder to see paintings on the upper row. Also on some statues there were shadows, which makes negative impact on receiving the artist’s message. I found quite small when you compare Quebec’s diversity and history.

Spent almost 5 hours wondering around this place. It’s one of my top favorite museums around the world. I loved the exhibitions going on and the variety of art. The seatings and couches throughout was amazing. So inviting and they want you to sit and contemplate the art. I love it. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. I will definitely be back soon because I didn’t even get to see it all.

Museum is very nice! Long line but the wait went by quickly. They take your jackets and big bags and hold it in a room for you. One floor of the museum is based on a New York artist. The other floor is filled with sculptures. I recommend visiting this museum. All the artwork is beautiful to look at :) This is also a boutique. I recommend bringing extra money if you would like to shop. Some of the items can cost up to $200 while other items are less than $30.

Spent 4 hrs here but u could definitely spend a whole day. The artwork was amazing and I loved how the 3 buildings are connected underground. I found myself when we were finished and sitting outside telling people who were trying to get in the other buildings first how it all worked. Definitely recommend while in Montreal

Nicely located in the Montreal downtown core and great exhibitions all around. Plenty of displays from artists around the world, a lot of art history to be learned and right at any Montrealers finger tips. Great for people of all ages! Entrance fees are reasonable and annual membership can be advantageous too.

Montreal's best museum - They have some really great permanent and temporary exhibitions. More than just fine art, there are nice collections of contemporary and modern art. The space is expansive and so there's so much to see, I'd say you probably need a few trips to really experience everything. I also really enjoy the architecture of the museum. It's cool to see the different eras fo the museum and the additions that have come after and how they all fit together while still being representative of their era. In the summer, there's also some great sculptures outside of the museum. I think the MBAM is a world class museum so if you enjoy this type of thing, then it's a must see in Montreal.

Had a lovely time at the Montreal museum of fine arts. There are 6 floors of arts and exhibition and the entry ticket prices are very nominal. There are a lot of places to eat nearby and the museum itself takes around 3-4 hours to relish leisurely. The entry to the museum is absolutely free on the first Sunday of every month, so plan your visit accordingly.

An excellent museum in many ways, and worth a visit for sure.. One thing though; the museum actually asks you to write how to help preserve the planet in one of its exhibitions BUT yet, when you go to the café and ask for a milk that isn’t from a cow (the dairy / meat industry is a HUGE cause of environmental damage never mind being utterly cruel to its core) they tell you they don’t have any other than cows milk. Serving any of the wonderful sustainable alternatives for cows milk is so easy to do, and it would be fantastic to see the museum actually DO more to aid sustainability than just virtue signal it….

The museum has been in my top five highlights of my visit to Canada. I love visiting museums and exhibitions as I feel they help me learn something about the world, and I was not disappointed in any way by the current exhibitions that show Colombian tribal culture and cultures around the world from roman to first nations influence...this place is a cornucopia of endless fascination and delights. Whither you appreciate pop art or classical art, the museum is for you, I couldn't recommend this place enough, and the few photos I managed to capture don't do it justice. It's spectacular. I was extra honoured to see some scotrish works in the collection, and it might make me biased, but it made me feel like I was at home, so thank you to the curators. ❤️

Great collections. They have modern to classic European, First Nations, Canadian….it’s a thorough set of art. They have some free evenings if you don’t want to pay admission. Everything is included with the admission, which is nice. The only complaint is there’s only one entrance/exit. We had to backtrack to leave. If we’d known that, we would have proceeded a little differently. They will ask that you check backpacks.

Signac and the Indépendants is the only exhibition accessible to visitors now. Admissions can only be purchased online. It was my first time to visit, I would like to come back to check other exhibitions in the near future. Off site parking is available along the street. Traffic were controlled at the entrance, but showrooms were crowded even though it was 10 am

We went when the international arts section was closed for renovation, which significantly took away from our experience. It was bad timing as the exhibits we saw were good but few. Four+ floors in the Canadian arts section seems like a lot but the rooms are small. Temporary exhibits were interesting.

Good museum! The coverage of art from Gothic through Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo and Impressionism is nicely done. The selection is good, although few notable pieces in the collection. There are then some interesting additional fine arts and contemporary exhibitions. In particular the current exhibition on voice was excellent, especially the final room with choir voices. The building is also very impressive, with some lovely window spaces having a great views across downtown Montreal

Probably by favourite museum in Montréal. Worth spending several hours here. Entry is timed to spread out visits to keep things Covid safe. There is an expansive collection of art and artifacts spanning the ages and the continents. The building itself is stunning and provides gorgeous views of the city. An excellent rainy day activity.

Very extensive museum where everyone can find something for themselves. Well, maybe less interesting for kids. It has several buildings and we spent more than 2 hours then, and could have spent more, but got too hungry. You can renter the same day though. The restaurant was closed when we were there. Pretty nice museum shop. Was a bit too cold in the building. I wish they would have requested all passengers to have vaccination pass. I would recommend checking the map of the museum first and starting what interest you the most, cause otherwise you get pretty tired by the end. The museum had art from around the world (my least favorite part probably) on the top floor of one of the buildings, then several contemporary exhibitions, exhibition about saving the planet, one with art from employees of the museum, and a lot more. I would come several times to explore fully.

Lovely museum with a variety of art on display. It is like a walk through history of art. Highlight recommended for all connoisseurs of art and history. The museum presents moments of reinterpretation of ancient material, such as documentaries on loop in certain sections, or an audio-visual display with art experiments. The museum boutique is okay. I ended up buying a few things, but left wanting more local showcase of souvenirs.

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is simply amazing and truly impressive! 🎨🏛️ The vast collections spanning various styles, themes, and eras provide an enriching and captivating experience for art enthusiasts of all kinds. I was blown away by the diversity and depth of the exhibits, showcasing both renowned masterpieces and lesser-known gems. The museum's curation allows visitors to explore and appreciate the beauty of art from different perspectives. Moreover, the personnel at the museum were incredibly kind and helpful, adding to the overall positive experience. Their passion for art and dedication to assisting visitors made the trip even more enjoyable. Whether you're an art connoisseur or someone looking to explore the world of fine arts, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is an absolute must-visit destination. Very disappointed by this museum, it was much better when Nathalie Bondil was running it. Cons: - handicap doors at the front didn't work. - restaurant closes at 3pm arrived at 2 pm and there was literally no more food, the place had been emptied out. Also at 2pm more then half the tables had the chairs on the tables to let us know that we weren't welcomed. Purchased a coffee which was more like a shot of coffee that's how small it was. - big gallery across the street was closed. - no European painters... - they mix modern with historical items.... Not something I enjoyed. I mean putting script tweets of Kanye West next to an Egyptian mummy, is in mind opinion, disrespectful. - wasn't allowed to have a water bottle for my 1 yr old baby.... - I like indeginous art, but this seemed to be overrepresented. - no changing tables in the washrooms. Pros: - gift shop is really nice. - you can buy tickets online. - although coffee was very small, it was really tasty. Obviously I'm not expecting the museum to be like the European museums but the collection is a little bit thin... I will not be back for several years and was truly disappointed.

As a jaded tourist who has been to the Met, the Louvre, every Smithsonian Museum, the Getty, etc, I was sure this was going to be a fine regional art museum. I was wrong. It was AMAZING! They have an excellent collection of modern art, but an even more excellent collection of Canadian art displayed by era. A complete art history through a Canadian lens. And the special exhibits were well curated and especially informative. Thoughtful presenatation indigenous artists. Inspiring! Delightful!

Probably the best exposition I’ve ever been to. I was stunned by the amount of diversity and how well everything was displayed. The museum is gigantic so be prepared to spend a whole afternoon there! Really worth the time and money! Also if you’re less than 18 years old, you get a free entry. How nice is that?!

It is enormous. So I suggest you work out which parts will be of most interest so you can pace your visit. We stupidly walked past the museum map at the entrance, which is essential reading. There is a nice bistro inside, which is a neat way to take a break between galleries. And the ticket is valid for the whole day, so you can go outside for a while to get some fresh air and/or something to eat or drink. It seems bizarre to travel from Europe to see a Picasso or some Dutch masters, but they are well presented and well worth seeing.

It’s a fantastic museum that you must visit if you’re in Montreal! I went on a Wednesday thinking that it would be closing at 9 but they informed me when I got there that it actually will close at 5 for a special exhibition. I really hope that they will announce this in their website or social media to inform other visitors ahead of time so I would recommend that you call if you plan on coming on a Wednesday. Other than that, they have world class art and carefully curated exhibits so make sure you come with clean schedule!

Love this museum. I’ve visited so many times and still love here. I just wanna share a small story. I accidentally lost my hat here on Wednesday and I was busy on these days. So I can only come back today to look for it. Their staffs are so nice. They have organized all the missing stuffs in the list and kept it until I come back (about two days). I found my hat back successfully. Thanks so much!!!!!

I really enjoyed the museum of fine arts in Montreal. There are several exhibits spread throughout 3 buildings linked by an underground hallway. I noticed washrooms on each level and the elevators were all in working order. We went when the museum opened, so it was a quick wait to purchase tickets. Coat check is available. The museum is rather warm, so check your coat. There's a large gift shop that's interesting to check out too. With so many items on display, there's bound to be something for everyone.

This was a beautiful Museum. I especially liked the floors with paintings from the 1600 - 1800s. I found those to be the most beautiful. I recommend going to the highest floor and working downwards if you want to maximize your time here, it's easy for time to fly by if you're not careful. Modern art is on the lower so I recommend skipping those floors if you are short on time.

A museum full of wonders! If you’re a fan of art and history you will definitely enjoy visiting. Antiques gathered from all over the world. Paintings, statues, … Seeing the thinker statue was one of the best parts, and also we enjoyed watching the abstract paintings.

Amazing art museum to visit while in Montreal! I would definitely recommend allocating more time than you would think as three hours was not nearly enough to visit all three of the buildings here. We stuck to the main entrance hall pavilion and the attached Pavilion for Peace and it took us around three hours to walk through and appreciate it all. Some amazing pieces here so definitely want to make sure you don’t miss it, particularly the Cabinet of Curiosities on the 3rd floor of the Pavilion for Peace. Definitely my favorite room of the museum.

The biggest museum in Montréal. Good collection of each and every article related to arts and creation. Well managed museum with separate section of painting, sculpture, Woodcarving, metal and glass works, netting and accessories. Québec history of fine arts and culture can be learn here. Moreover, it gives a clear picture of global evolution of arts and craft.

Are you in town for a week or only for the day? This place is a must if you want to see what Montreal have to offer. Big and free admission for those age under 30 for the permanent exhibition. Getting a ticket to this museum is really more like getting a ticket to multiple museums all at once. There is a one dedicated to contemporary Canadian art, historic international art, and then one dedicated to design. They're in separate buildings, but connected below ground via elevators for easy access. Worth your time!

Instead of attending Canada Day celebrations, we instead went to the museum to look at indigenous art & other Canadian artists. They also had an exhibition on from Columbia showing and educating people on their indigenous culture and practices. Overall, the space was beautiful and clean. Organized and well planned out exhibits. Even their museums gift shop was really beautiful and had such a nice selection of items that aren’t all cheap-looking & boring. The staff, the cleanliness, the ticket prices and the overall collection of authentic art was ALL worth the trip. You're not going to find this kind of variety in too many places throughout the world. No video recording and no flash photos - respect the rules and take photos (without flash) with respect. There is a cafe on site - they WILL check your bag, so don't get offended. Outside drinks are not okay.

It’s not worth a visit due to the subpar collections, the cold and unwelcoming staff, and the confusing layout of four buildings connected by underground passage. Our family went there yesterday morning. No one at the museum was friendly or had a smile on their faces. One of the staff members at the 1st floor European painting section gave a kid a hard time because the poor boy inadvertently touched the description next to a painting. We focused on the European collections. Masterpieces are few and far between. It takes a trained eye to identify an occasional Rembrandt, Monet, Degas, Dali, Picasso etc. No food understandable, but no even bottled water, bought from museum cafe? When they saw a bottled water they reacted as if it were a bomb. This is a first among all the museums I visited.

I did not enter this museum specifically for Giants of Modern Art exhibition (Henry Moore and Georgia O'Keeffe), but found the whole experience enjoyable. O'Keeffe was influenced by one of my other favorites Vassily Kandinsky, as I found out via curator's narrative next to her Blue Line masterpiece. Don't skip the Pop Art or Inuit sections as there are several treasures there. Gift shop could have been from any museum: lacking were several contemporary pieces in permanent collection deserving a place in commemoration.

Too cramped at its original location, the Art Association strongly considered the idea of moving from Phillips Square to the Golden Square Mile, where the most of the city's financial elite lived at the time. They settled on the site of the abandoned Holton House, on Sherbrooke Street West, for the construction of the new museum. Senator Robert Mackay, the owner of the property, was convinced to sell the house for a good price.[12] A committee responsible for the construction of the museum was formed consisting of James Ross, Richard B. Angus, Vincent Meredith, Louis-Joseph Forget and David Morrice. Most members of this committee offered a considerable amount of their own money for the construction of the museum. This included a large donation by businessman James Ross. The Phillip's Square location was demolished in 1912, and is now a Burger King. A limited architectural design competition was conducted to select an architect among three architectural firms that were invited to apply. The museum committee selected the project proposed by brothers Edward Maxwell and William Sutherland Maxwell. Trained in the Beaux-Arts tradition, they proposed a building that catered to French taste of the time: sober and majestic. Work began in the summer of 1910 and finished in the fall of 1912. On December 9, 1912, the Governor General of Canada, Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, inaugurated the new Museum of the Art Association of Montreal on Sherbrooke Street West in front of 3,000 people present for the occasion.

Always a wonderful way to spend time with friends and family visiting the museum. Well situated downtown close to many great restaurants should you choose not to eat at the museum restaurant. Exhibits vary so keep an eye out on the schedule not to miss out but there is always the permanent collection to see through out the year

I wasn't sure if this would be the kind of place I would enjoy or feel welcome at, but wow! It's really nice, there are a number of beautiful exhibits that will surely spark up conversation if you bring a date. There's a cafe too which has great coffee. I had a great time.

This museum does not care about your safety and wellbeing. 50+ people in tiny rooms, most of whom of are not wearing masks during a pandemic. They are overselling and not requiring masks. I got a sore throat after my visit

The museum offers a wide variety of artworks, ranging from modern art, contemporary art, abstract art, etc so if you're an art lover, it's definitely a great place to visit in Montreal. Give yourself a lot of time though since it will take at least one day to fully enjoy all the collections. My only problem is the organization of the pieces - it feels a bit cramped up and some pieces are quite difficult to see based on the fact that they are hung pretty high up on the wall.

If you expect to see skeletons of sharks and dinosaurs, sorry to disappoint you..... But to see creative modern designs etc...go on.....

In the past few years it seems the curator's leftist politics seem to bleed into the exhibition descriptions at every possible opportunity. The descriptions themselves are often meandering, verbose yet don't always provide adequate context to the art in the room. They are also hard to read because they never have a light pointing at them. Generally a good museum, with good staff.

The exhibit is the only one accessible in these times of COVID-19. Tickets must be purchased in advance and a visiting time is listed. All sanitary measures are present (Purell, 2 meters, plexiglass, etc.). The visit is very pleasant because there are fewer people in the rooms than usual. We almost bless the pandemic! The exhibition is masterful. We trace the evolution of Post-Impressionism, focusing on the Independents. Monet makes the link with Impressionism from the start of the journey. Masters paintings followed, including the evolution of some sketches to the final canvas, posters and other works of art influenced by the Independents. Here, as always, we must pay tribute to Nathalie Bondil, director of the MMFA. This very talented woman has made the MMFA an international museum institution. This is an unequivocal asset for Montreal. Ms. Bondil shines all over the world and we owe her many major exhibitions. An amazing experience at this museum for my second time! Let me start by saying I love that it’s free every first Sunday of the month. Second, the staff is very friendly and professional. The museum is always clean and visitors respect that and keep it that way. It is located on Sherbrooke Street, one of my favorites of Montreal. Keep in mind that the museum is constituted of 3 separate but connected buildings so it might take you a while to visit it all or several visits like I did. Each building has several floors and of course there’s a café and a souvenirs shop. I love the selections of their paintings and each gallery on the different floors. You really travel to the era you are contemplating the paintings from. This is what makes the experience special and unique. I would definitely come back again. Thanks for a great time!

Lovely musuem with a nice Canadian collection of Renaissance paintings from Florence, France and the Netherlands, to the English. In addition, you may like their small ensemble collections of world art, especially the best collection of modern and classic African arts, perhaps due to Quebec's French connection to its former colonies in Africa. It's worth a two-hour visit.

Beautiful museum! There is something for everyone to appreciate, I was mostly amazed by the Napoleon hair they have there! Looking at that and many other objects that were hundreds of years old was just mind blowing . I also really liked viewing and reading about all the different styles of art, paintings, sculptures etc. We walked around for 3 hours and saw everything. We were starving at the end of our little tour but while in there i noticed people actually take their lunch bags and eat inside the museum…they have a lot of lounge areas for the people to eat..-also several bathrooms everywhere all very clean

The Museum of Fine Arts de Montreal is site rich of historical contexts and art works. My family and I really enjoyed the time we spent here, very worth to visit if you travel to Montreal. At The Museum of Fine Arts, you can develop a thorough understanding of what art is. And a thousand people have a thousand different definition of art. The diversity of the artworks included in this museum of shockingly.

The building itself is very pretty and bien-fait. I recommend.

One of the finest art museums in the world, it never fails to please and surprise me with its exhibits whether permanent or not. There are 3 buildings, I was only able to do one (never had enough time!) and yet, everything on display was varied and had something for everyone. The building itself (by Moshe Safdie) is already an architectural eye candy. There is no bad angle. When in Montreal, this place is a “must visit” for art aficionados. Highly recommend!
