Montreal's oldest active historical structure is also an absolutely amazing window into the past, and provides spectacular views of the city. The "Sailors Church," is dedicated to seafarers, as seen by the little ships hanging in the chapel, and that connection to the water is at its heart. The chapel itself is pretty, with some beautiful statuary, but it's the Marguerite Bourgeoys Museum that gives true value to this destination. For a small fee you will learn about Canada's first female saint through some fascinating displays, and even better than that you get access to the bell tower where you can step outside to see breathtaking views of Old Montreal and the St Lawrence River. The crypt underneath the chapel provides more history to enjoy, and you can even access the active archaeological site under the church! The staff at the museum were amazing as well, and the tour of the dig site was fantastic. Easily the best $14 I spent in Montreal, and a stop highly recommended for all visitors!

At the peaceful moment of my trip, it was a practicing for the concert. I just stepped in at the right time to absorb the beautiful melody of the song. Church itself is Norman-Gothic style of Architecture, very attractive to me. Even the size of the building is considered small, but I feel the church is grand and so much of spiritual vibe and glory.

Beautiful Church with history and the museum on the upper floor and the historical vault inside the basement. You need to buy tickets to see the museum and the vault. The surrounding area is so beautiful as well.

The oldest chapel in Montreal, with a beautiful golden statue above the front door and a smart museum inside. We got a nice introduction and has a bit if a wander through the main chapel. We didn't explore the museum, but were told it was well worth the little fee to get in. Cameras were allowed, but no flashes, which is totally understandable (flashes aren't great to use, anyways). It was interesting looking at the painted roof and the stained glass windows, all the boats hanging up high were cute, and the galleries around the edges did impress. There were good short descriptions of the features in the chapel at each of the stops, and as we were leaving the staff were getting candles ready for a more evening setup. This was also a good chapel to see from the outside - when we recognized it from further away it did impress again and again.

Beautiful and amazing chapel! A must visit Montreal's heritage gem. Lovely tour with friendly and knowledgeable guide. We can go up to the top of the tower and see the old port of Montreal. So worth it!

I loved this place because is a beautiful place to feel your soul relieved, small and intimate to prayer and to learn about the Montréal's history. At the top, the view of The old port is perfect for nice pictures.

What a gem! It’s a beautiful church and museum. It’s free to see the church; the museum does cost. The museum is worth the money. They do a fantastic job of telling the story of Marguerite Bourgeoys. She was an amazing woman. If you climb to the top of the church, you get a fantastic view of the river and the city. They had an adorable Noah’s Ark exhibit by Claude Lafortune. It’s all made of paper.

Beautiful chapel not to be missed if you are near the port. It is located next to the Marché Bonsecours cultural center. There is no entry fee for the chapel. Noteworthy are the high altar, the beautiful stained glass windows, the saint's tomb and the small ships that dangle from the ceiling of the chapel into the church interior.

Impressive details to enjoy. Free to go in the chapel but you have to pay to go to the museum. decretive windows where every window tells a part of Jesus’s life. There is place to light a candle 5$ or 10$ for big candle.

This place is a museum and also one of the oldest cathedral in Montreal. My wife and I parked our car nearby and she saw many people goes through the bug red door outside this cathedral and she decided to check it out. That was when we found out what an amazing place this is. We didn’t have to buy any ticket to view the chapel, but a donation box and gift shop is available inside. The museum is ticket only and didn’t go inside the museum.

We attended the ABBA tribute last night. If you are a big fun even when you are just an occasional listener to this group, this is worth the experience. The orchestra did a great job. The ambience in the church was phenomenal. This added to the great entertainment. Made me mellow. Maybe good for hot headed leaders to attend this. Will bring some peace in them.

One of the few historic buildings in Montreal. A must to visit with its little museum on education pioneer in Quebec. It also has a nice view from the top and very interesting vault below the chapel.

One of the city’s oldest churches, dating back to 1771 with a foundation that dates back to 1673. It’s a bit of a hidden gem when compared to the other big relics in Montréal such as the Basilica and the Cathedral. We were lucky enough to arrive amidst a choir rehearsal and it was so special, very spiritual vibe, no words can describe. It gave me goosebumps for life. Free entrance.

Beautiful old chapel that took my breath away the moment I stepped in. Incredible to believe this place is hundreds of years old as it's upkept so lovingly! Stunning architecture and truly humbling to think that a saint resides here. :) The gift shoppe located just off the actual chapel itself was also lovely to peruse and I left with a few new treasures after also seeing some of the artifacts on display in the hallway. I wish I had time to take a trip through the museum, but that will have to wait until I'm next in Montreal. Gorgeous chapel that's well worth the stop for history fans and pilgrims alike!

      >  > History HISTORY History of the Oldest Chapel in Montreal, Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel's Facebook Page A Historical and Heritage gem For over 350 years, the Chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours, a jewel of history and heritage, has made its way into the hearts of generations of visitors and pilgrims. As you step into the church, you will immediately notice the peaceful atmosphere and feel a palpable link to Montreal’s past. This chapel, built in 1771, was constructed directly on top of the first stone chapel of Montreal whos foundations were recently uncovered. This first chapel was originally a site of pilgrimage. This is also the site where officers of the British regime considered setting up barracks to house the military. This was a silent witness to the faith of Montrealers who rebuilt a chapel when it seemed impossible

A rather nice chapel dedicated to seafarers so there are ship models hanging from the ceiling. A walk up the tower is well worth the extra time and money.

Amazing. One of the most important and iconic tourist attractions in Montreal. It is located in front of Place d’Armes. It was built more than 300 years ago and has a very rich religious collection inside. You need to pay to visit inside. Tip: There is a "hidden" beautiful place, just behind the main attraction, beside the wash rooms.

One of the oldest chapels in Montreal, this building has beautiful architecture. It's relatively small, but worth poking around if you're in Old Montreal. There is no admission fee, but they ask for a donation. There's a lot of history here and there's a few plaques that provide a few brief descriptions of major events.

Really nice historical church that has been preserved amazingly. A must-visit for tourists in the area. The Site Marguerite Bourgeoys is a great museum to visit in the same building ad the chapel. It contains many historical artifacts and a nice view of downtown from the tower.

A beautiful church and must visit site in the old Montreal. Over the past 20 years, I have been in Montreal 3 times. Each time, I had myself wondered here and gazed around it, close and afar, drinking in its heavenly and earthy charm.

Beautiful and meaningful place, where you can learn about the history of the city, its founder and her legacy. The chapel itself is free to visit, and there's also a paid museum dedicated to the history and legacy of Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys, with a particular focus on her work on education, as well to the history of the city of Montreal. The museum contains plenty of artifacts from the 17th century onwards, as well as detailed and insightful information on them and their history and relevance. There were also some interactive experiences. If you visit Montreal you must visit this Chapel, and I recommend you visit the Museum too, it's great to experience the living legacy of a person ingrained in a building they founded, I'm not a believer, but this Chapel made me appreciate greatly the person Saint Marguerite was, I can only imagine the effect of visiting the resting place of a Saint can have for a Catholic. The chapel is within walking distance to many other attractions and restaurants, so there's no excuse to avoid it.

This chapel is the smaller of two Notre-Dame churches in Old Montreal. It's a hidden gem that is often ignored by tourists and visitors of the old city. It didn't take me that much time to visit, but I came out impressed by the paintings hanging on its walls, its vaulted ceiling, ornate altar, stained glass windows, tiny ships that hang from the ceiling and much more. There's also a small museum that you can reach from inside the church. Definitely worth your while.

Gorgeous chapel. We paid $9 CAD/ person to go on the top. It’s 69 steps to get to the first point of view and them 20 something more steps to be under the dome. It’s free to just come inside and rest/pray, whatever works for you. Donations are welcome. There is also a gift shop inside in the back left.

Awesame place! Very interesting museum and great staff. A super nice girl who showed us around the underground /I forgot her name/ she did a great job and answered all the questions we had. And the view from the top of the chapel is beautiful. A must see place, if only for this view. I recommend this place. Kind of small, and yet we spent almost 2 hours there, so nice.

This is a beautiful old church at the end of old Montreal. Really worth seeing we arrived to late to see the attached museum but the church itself was very beautiful. The model ships are a wonderful addition. They gave us a little tour answering questions. I do not remember the name of the young man who showed us around but he was very knowledgeable and made the visit special for our group of four people. We arrived on May 14 at just before 5pm Even if you do not go up to the museum you can see the gift shop and a hall of artifacts beside the church. I think this old church from the 1770s is every bit as much a must see as the more well known Notre Dame.

Good history nuggets 👍 The view at the top of the building was worth paying the admission to go see. The chapel is pretty but it is a chatty area. The staff were extremely friendly. (My grumpy father would say too in your face)

a chapel with rich history and lots to learn about Marguerite Bourgeoy's legacy. there is an attached museum inside to explore further which you need a ticket for but the main area is free to browse. don't forget to check out the side area as there is a lot of info on the history of this chapel and how it became the oldest chapel in Montreal. relish in the beauty of the stained glass windows as well!

Beautiful church, no masses but can enter and just sit in prayer, very tranquil! Would love to come back soon!

  • 5/5 Tim K. 1 year ago on Google
Great chapel and definitely less tourists than Notre Dame, would encourage a donation. You can say a prayer and take your time to admire the wonders of all that the chapel provides. It's serene and the music played when I was there was live not a recording which demonstrated great acoustic surroundings
