Excellent corned beef and pastrami sandwich! The meat is tender and high quality. Definitely worth the stop.

Full disclosure: we did not eat here. However, our family was trying to find a place to eat at 9am and must have looked like the lost tourists (stranded by a missed airplane connection). One of the gentlemen who has worked there for 30 years walked across the street to us and offered to help. He walked us down the street to one place which was closed, then suggested two more places for us. We ended up at Central Restaurant, a diner that has been around for 100 years and we really enjoyed. But just the man going out of his way to help us was so nice. If we ever get stranded here again I'll make sure to go by when it's open!

Took the PATH to Newark to see what the hype is about, this being one of the few Jewish delis accessible via public transit for us folks up in Hudson county, especially when we don't want to schlep into Manhattan for kosher eats. We got their flagship dish, the No. 5 sandwich, and uhh... whoa!! This was a FIVE STAR sandwich. This thing is mondo, folks. I got a side of Rye Toast along with it, and place half of the sandwich innards there to effectively make two sandwiches to eat across two sittings. It tasted delicious, and the people working there (including the owners) were extremely friendly and personable. Our waitress was warm & attentive and we shot the breeze with one of the staff while he was on his lunch break about local eats, the city of Newark, and finding a good life partner. We will definitely be back. Thank you Hobby's!!

Amazing. Fantastic. Superb. Not even close. Atmosphere abounds as a NJ Devils deli. A historic landmark (at least for connoisseurs of meats) in the heart of Newark and just a few steps from the Devils ice! The pastrami was the way it is supposed to be: a brisket, thick sliced, loose and juicy..and in my case as a reuben served open face. And of course a side of poutine!! Just the thing to destroy any diet!! It is worth the trip!!

Read about this place somewhere, and I just happened to drive by it today. I was lucky to find a parking spot very close. The place is very clean, and the staff is very friendly. Ordered the pastrami on rye with mustard. The portion was good, not extremely big like some other places, but enough…..the pickles were amazing. The pastrami was delicious! Will come back to try other items.

Overjoyed for this Newark landmark's re-opening. The sign on the door honestly states test run when I stopped by (limited hours) as they retrain and test a new ordering system. Pastami with mustard and cole slaw and a big half sour pickle made my order and I was in and out within 15 minutes.

Two plus years waiting......5 minutes waiting to place my order.....five minutes waiting for my order....15 minutes slowly savoring the slice of heaven!!!! Had the pastrami and pickle, was going back in for a corned beef but work forced an emergency on me. Going back today.

I ordered the weequahic sandwich (no.1 on the menu), sandwich was acceptable at best; However, i felt the value proposition is almost non existent here, the place seemed run down and depressing, dry bread mediocre tasting sandwich (at least the one i ordered) coupled with high prices (Paid a total of about $35 just to dine in the sandwich) I think this place is incredibly overrated.

I wanted to try this place for a while and finally got around to it. I used the QRcode they have on the doorusing my credit card which was a good thing. Because they were swarmed with orders. But I got mine when I arrived after placing the order 20 minutes ago. I ordered a Pastrami and Turkey with Cole Slaw and Russian Dressing On Rye. It was very good the portion size was why it was almost $30. It's not a place I would go to weekly because of the price but it's a once in a while tree

Holy cow! What an awesome experience. We had friendly service, great food, and the Devils atmosphere is great! Lots of lovely little holes everywhere if you're paying attention. I highly recommend the Reuben "sliders," though each one is really the size of a whole sandwich. It lets you taste the traditional, Chico, and brisket Reubens, with is good because I still can't choose. We'll definitely be back.

Holy cow, I cannot describe how absolutely fantastic this place is! Michael and Kim did such a great job taking care of us and the food was out of this world. I will be going out of my way to visit any time I am within 100 miles.

I’m so glad an authentic deli is back in Newark. We went from having 3 to having 0. But thank goodness Hobby’s is here. Trying the Pastrami on Rye now and my Mrs got a Rueben. It’s really not bad. Concerned that it’s a bit pricy for the amount of meat you actually get (not like Bragmans or Coopers) but at least it’s not fried or microwaved. I’m so glad they didn’t forget the traditional pickles. Will definitely go again. 4 stars easy

Visited Saturday. Busy afternoon. I remember lunches and parties at Hobby's working for Bambergers. As I entered there was a kiosk which I was not familiar with. A Karen with ear plugs dismissively told me to use it to order. A young lady( an Angel)asked if I needed help with ordering. Her name is Kim D . She was helpful, knowledgeable of the menu and very polite. Called me mama. I was thankful for her help. Not only did she save me but she saved Karen from a brutal tongue lashing. Thank you Kim. Many blessings. You deserve a raise and Karen needs to go in the back and take customer service classes.

The of the best and oldest place in Newark to get the best pastrami and corned beef sandwiches. It has been a staple and landmark in the downtown area of newark for years. Family owned and family friendly.

This location will be appearing on the silver screen in The Many Saints of Newark. The whole block has a retro vibe to it (the few blocks surrounding it was just used for a film set of the Joker movie) and I just had to snap a picture of it. I hear the food is very delicious as well!!

Extremely disappointed with this deli. I ordered 2 sandwiches and they charged me $45. A hot pastrami and corn beef combo. They brought sandwiches out already bagged up when completed. When I got to my office, I was stunned at the small size of these sandwiches. Looked like size of Quick Check deli frig sandwiches. Didn't taste good either. Not worth it. Doubt if I'll go back.

Very old school feel. I was there when the lunch crowd was there, it was crowded. Ladies taking orders were courteous polite and knowledgeable. Food was DELICIOUS.

My husband and I grew up in Newark NJ and regularly ate at Hobby's. Sandwiches, especially Pastrami are DELICIOUS. We moved to Virginia about thirty years ago. Whenever we came to Newark, stopping by Hobby's for two Pastrami sandwiches was a MUST do. On Saturday October 23, 2021 coming from New Haven CT, we made it our business to go to by Hobby's to get our sandwiches. Hobby's was closed👁️👁️😯😢. Standing outside, Hobby's looked as if it was closed down. A gentleman passing by said, "Hobby's isn't open anymore",😱. Is that the truth???? IS THAT TRUE

I’m from out of town and love a good deli. I ended up speaking with the owner or manager asking him what I should get, and he told me the pastrami sandwich, with Russian coleslaw. I had never tried Russian coleslaw before so he made me a mini sandwich so I could taste it before purchasing, which was so incredibly kind. He then brought out a Dr. Brown’s soda for me to wash it down with for free. The sandwich was outstanding, and I live for a good sandwich. And he was right, washing it with Dr. Brown’s just sealed the deal! Don’t miss out, their food is good, but their customer service is even more top notch! Thank you!

The food was so delicious! We had read about this place and it was rated #1, but you know you can't always believe what you read. I would definitely have to agree with that statement. When we arrived we were greeted right away by who appeared to be the owner and he also made sure we were doing ok once we got our food. Now that's what I call great service! The price was fair for the amount of food you get. We for there at around 11:30am for lunch and wow, it was so filling and much more. I ordered the corned beef and pastrami sandwich, which they are known for. There was so much meat in that sandwich, I did not know what to do with myself. Each bite was as good as the last one. The meat was super fresh and juicy. Not a single dry bite. The Russian dressing that is placed on the inside of the bread made it so much better. There was just a light coating of it and a light layer of coleslaw as well. It was just enough to get an extra crunch to every bite. I loved that it was not over powering and made the sandwich how it should be. I also ordered a side of the pasta salad. Such a perfect size for such an enormous sandwich size. It was not bland and was not over bearing with flavors. It was just perfect and I loved the fresh vegetables that were diced up so you can get a little bite with the pasta. I was too full, but I had to order a hamentashen to go. I ordered the apricot flavor and it is the size of my hand. I cannot wait to devour this later. I am sure it is as great as the food they serve! Highly recommend coming here to eat!!! Oh and I cannot forget the friendly service we had! Everyone was so happy and they greeted us with a smile. The lady at the check out counter was just as pleasant as everyone else there. Great work guys!

We like their pastrami sandwich. Good, old-fashioned American diner size. Fries are good, but could be a little more seasoned. I only wish they toasted their bread and used more dressing/sauce. Pickles that come with the sandwich are also nice. Fried onion rings were good. Didn't care about their soup, seemed overcooked thus a little bland.

Incredible food and huge portions at Hobby’s. This old-school family deli has an enormous menu, which left us planning our next trip back. One of the owners, Michael, chatted with us for a while during our meal, which added even more to the comfortable, welcoming, family vibe. The potato pancakes were better than any I’d had before, and the matzah ball soup was picture-worthy. There were several vegetarian and vegan options too, including a Mediterranean grilled vegetable platter with divine homemade hummus. Must try!

Great owners and friendly staff. Some of the best deli I've had. Huge portions. Been coming here before Devils games for a number of years now, it is great on gameday seeing all the fans in there.

I talk about this place all the time on Facebook Instagram this is my favorite deli. I really enjoy the food I come here often I love Marc and Michael and all the staff I’ve been here for years. I am so happy they re-opened the best part of it. They are only eight minutes from my house. Love you guys. Keep on doing what you’re doing.❤️😘

My sandwich tasted awesome. All top notch ingredients. However for the price of 20 bucks I was expecting much more. The roll was standard size and the over stuffing wasn't really there. Could barely find a roasted pepper in most bites to boot.

I had a corned beef Reuben and my friend got the pastrami. U will spend between $18 and $25 or so for one, but it's worth it imo. It's not only huge but comes with all the extras, pickles were great, fries were slamming, and a ton of meat. This spot or bragmans are the ones for me if ur in Newark.

Our go to deli whenever we visit, a must go to anyone who are Devils fans or just fans of good food.

  • 5/5 Osia K. 1 year ago on Google
They are currently closed for renovations. I passed by it the other day, and Google assumed I visited. Nonetheless, I remember the pastrami here is sooooo good, that the memory compels me to write some appraising words. Put simply, it is that perfectly cooked and flavored beef that the reptile part of your brain constantly craves. If the American Heart Association gave a warning that consuming two of these sandwiches might kill you, the reptile brain would still win. I cannot wait until they reopen!!!!

Outstanding pastromi sandwich! I thought I had the best across the river in Manhattan. Nope. Hobby's slices their meat thin which melts in your mouth. Wonderful staff and tips are well welcomed. All is made for take out and you sit yourself at the tables. Check the hours and the Newark Museum is an excellent stop when in the area.
