(Translated by Google) Rangefinder and anchor that belonged to the German battleship Admiral Graf Spee, sunk by its crew in the outskirts of Montevideo, on December 17, 1939, in the "Battle of the River Plate", during World War II. It seems almost unthinkable that these elements belonging to a battleship of the III Reich, have reached the shores of the Rio de La Plata. On December 20, its Captain, Hanz Langsdorff, was in the headquarters of the naval workshops of Dársena Norte, port of Buenos Aires. In the solitude of command, he spoke on the phone with the Führer, wrote a letter to his family and shot himself. His remains rest in the German cemetery in Buenos Aires. The story does not end there, because after it was sunk its crew was dispersed both in Uruguay and Argentina, weaving many stories in its wake.

The "Admiral Graf Spee" was an ironclad. During a naval battle off the coast of Uruguay in 1939, the warship was damaged by 3 British cruisers. Commander Hans Langsdorff called at Montevideo to make himself seaworthy again. The British warships blocked the Río de la Plata and so the government demanded that they leave Urugay immediately. Due to this hopelessness, Commander Hans Langsdorff had his own crew sunk in the Río de la Plata off Montevideo on December 17, 1939, thereby saving the lives of many German sailors. He took his own life two days later in Buenos Aires.

Actually it is just an anchor, but that of the Graf Spee and is intended to remind and warn of the Second World War. Located directly at the cruise terminal just a short walk away. If there is a guard of honor there, please ask in advance whether you can approach the memorial.

Good place to visit the remains of Graf Spee with the anchor. The problem is to enter the area. Just say you want to buy a ticket at buqebus. Than they let you in for free and without an identity card. Otherwise you will have no chance to see the anchor which is strange in my opinion. It is a part of history.

The anchor of Admiral Spee is located inside the port, there is a small monument for preserve the memory of the II world war. You must have to announce the navy guards you are going there.

Nice place, when we arrived they were controlling the entrance but when we said we were going to see it they let us pass without problems. The environment is also nice. I think yes, it is a little touristy place for the history it has.

Anchor is not in this location anymore (Jan 2024). According to port staff, it has been relocated to Maldonado.

Anchor seems to have disappeared and only the monument left, even our local tour guide thought it was still there 🙄
