Once in a while, you stumble across a really surprisingly good, completely unexpected winner. VERNE is exactly that place. It is a short drive from Carrasco, and not a long drive from, say, Pocitos, and absolutely merits the drive from wherever you are! VERNE is a leafy oasis that you would never expect, given its location on the side of the Rambla in Ciudad de la Costa. I drove past it twice, trying to find it - that's how understated it it is. It has a tiny sign. Park in front and prepare to be impressed. You walk in through a healthy herd garden with tables spaced comfortably throughout. The front garden is spectacular; the glassed-in greenhouse interior is just right. I had the grilled camerones and sandia, followed by the carrot risotto, with a glass of espumante from Los Nadies. Great! If I had visitors to Montevideo, this would be one of the top 3 places I would take them, ideally in the middle of summer so we could walk across the road and hit the beach after. Open 12-17 and 20-24. Update: the first time I went for lunch. My second visit was for dinner. We ate inside this time and it is excellent! This should be on your short list of special restaurants in MVD. Family owned and run, with super fresh & really good menu! Highly recommended!

Really an interesting spot in the "country". Great architectural design which I suspect is even more inviting in daylight. The food was good, not excellent but fresh tasting and slightly different. Menu is short but it allows for the kitchen to do all dishes well: great cerviche, good and well prepared pesca del dia. Excellent cocktail bar from what I could see with a broad enough fairly priced wine list. Service was friendly and helpful,chairs were comfortable ( not a foregone conclusion in Uruguay. Do restaurant owners never sit in these chairs before they buy them?! ). Piece de resistance on Thursday night was LIVE MUSIC! In this case an evening of Bossa Nova excellently and non obtrusively played by a local jazz artist named Patricia Lopez. There should be more of this happening in MVD restaurants: add to my dinner don't intrude on it and this was perfect!!

The staff were both knowledgeable and friendly. The meal was very good. Pictured, you can see our desserts which were also excellent. We sat outside which is coated in flowering plants and was lovely. I'd really come back again.
