The Dandenong national park is one to die for! The scenery nature is unmatched! The sight of tree branching over you whilst birds chirp away is a real surreal experience. The entire walk is very peaceful making it a great time to consolidate your thoughts. If you don’t like exercising this is the place for you, get distracted by the views and nature losing track of time! Hope this helps :)

We came here for hiking but due to closure of some of the hiking place, we went for the lyrebird track instead of Kokoda track 1000 steps memorial walk. It was drizzling and we hiked up under the rain. Fresh air and heard lyrebird welcoming us with their lovely voice! A memorable hike for 750m distance before giving up!

Beautiful park, great place to admire giant trees

A wonderful place to walk in, however do make sure you're aware of trail updates and fallen trees. Many trails are closed so do check online before embarking on long or complex hikes. Numerous picnic grounds and lots of opportunities to spot lyre birds, wallabies, Kookaburras and kangaroos apart from colourful species of parrots and on the flora side all manner of ferns, trees, fungi and more!

If you live locally, I highly recommend walking here once or twice a month. If you don't live locally, please grab a friend and come visit. It's peaceful on the trails so long as you don't go at peak times on the weekends. The park is currently getting some upgrades including a new playground right beside the cafe!

My go to when I'm in the area. Love this track! Stairs are always a good challenge and great if you don't have all that much time to get in a great workout! Beautiful rainforest scenery too, and bush depending on which part of the track you go. Love it!

Spectacularly beautiful area of the world and an absolute natural wonder of endless beauty. I could spend every day exploring the Dandenong Ranges National Park and never completely understand it or see it all in a lifetime. Every season also brings a unique beauty to this Aussie wonderland of natural splendor

The scenery of the Forest Park is beautiful and pleasant, and there are facilities for people to rest along the mountaineering avenue. It is very user-friendly and is a tourist and leisure destination.

Dandenong Ranges National Park is a beautiful and peaceful place I've visited. The park is home to an incredible array of flora and fauna, including towering mountain ash trees, colourful parrots, and curious wallabies. The hiking trails are well-maintained and offer breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Whether you're looking for a challenging hike or a leisurely stroll, there's a trail for every level of fitness. And if you're lucky, you might even spot a lyrebird mimicking the sounds of the forest! Overall, I highly recommend a visit to this stunning national park.

Great set up for families. Decent parking. Good tourist areas with ice cream, snacks, coffee etc. Lots of large picnic tables and areas for bbq’s too Lots of walking trails for serious walkers and lazier ones like myself including some for disabled people which I was very impressed with. Lots of local wildlife to see and the kids loved giving the birds some birdseed. We will definitely be going back.

Easily accessible by private or public means. Whether for fitness or fun or meditation, individual or a group, this is a great place. Family friendly with children playground. Informative too as you get to learn bits and pieces of history. Some few minutes shy of an hour to walk your way to the top as you pass scenic views on your way to the top

If you really want to get out in the bush with great walking tracks then this is the place to go. There's also plenty of parking spaces and a Cafe. The 1000 steps is the best if your into exercise and want a challenge. It's surrounded by bushland so makes walking a very nice experience

Definitely wouldn't recommend going on the 1000 steps if you're a beginner hiker like me 😭 can get very steep so be careful walking up and avoid going or looking down too much (can get a little dizzy lol). We also saw some wild animals like lyrebirds, an echidna, and kookaburras! (up in the picnic area, the kookaburras often steal food and can bite your fingers doing it, so be mindful of that if you got picnic food). Overall, one of the best trails in the area and there's a gelato spot nearby to get a little treat right after all that hard work 💪😋

Very calming and you could feel nature deeply. You also could find various species of birds such as cockatoos, parrots and lyrebirds. ** BE CAREFUL about the leeches, they are sneaking under the ground and coming into you!

A regular on hikes in this area, absolutely love the area and walks, only negative point on these walks is not enough detail maps on offer unless you go online and download them to use off-line. Highly recommended and will always continue to use these walks, did the Lyrebird, Neumann and Grants picnic are walk the latest.

A nice place for a weekend walk. Signs say the 1000 steps take 1.5hrs but I did it in 45 mins with my moderate fitness level. Walk up the stairs and down via the alternate track. Take a bottle of water, there are taps at the top to refil. Go early in the day as it gets busy on a nice day.

Dandenong Ranges National Park is a true natural wonder! The lush rainforests, towering mountain ash trees, and picturesque fern gullies create a mesmerizing landscape that captivates every visitor. The network of walking trails allows you to explore the park's beauty at your own pace, with each turn revealing breathtaking vistas and diverse flora and fauna. The iconic Puffing Billy steam train adds a touch of nostalgia, making the visit even more enchanting. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a photography lover, or simply seeking tranquility, Dandenong Ranges National Park offers an unforgettable escape into the heart of Australia's stunning wilderness.

This Park does not look like common park that you see in Melbourne, this Park likes beautiful rain forest with natural vegetations. For people who want to cardio exercises while enjoying beautiful natural rain forest, this is the best place. Very highly recommended place and will visit this place again in the future, for sure. Love it this place! PS: make sure you fit enough and bring a lot of water if you visit in summer to climb up until the top 😁.

Always lovely to spend some time on the trails. Walked from Forest Road up to Sassafras and back down, about 15km all up. Maps will tell you there is a trail up to Clark Road from Alpine around the paddock. This is not true, have to go through the bush. Besides that, lovely :)

This classic national Park is in of Victoria’s and you can understand why even in the 1800’s people decided this place deserved protection! My visit was to the 1000 steps/ Kokoda memorial walk area and even though the steps are understandably still closed there are amazing recreational operoo ties across the park. So close to Melbourne it’s cool And often wet environment would serve for a great summer reprieve or a cool winder explore. The region has so much to offer across not only the park but the many villages across the ranges.

Beautiful place for a solo or a group get away. Wear good hiking shoes if going during the rains. The paths will be very muddy and the shoes will get dirty. Look for kookaburras, cockatoos and lyre birds. There's a cafe and toilet at the entrance. Try to download and keep an offline map if you're taking PTV, as signals in optus would be very poor here.

Went for the 1,000 steps walk With family. It was quite a good experience. We bumped into a former tour guide who explained a lot of things to us about the place. Relaxing walk if you are fit enough for it. Lot of really old trees and streams flowing downhill.

This place is worth visiting but crazy drivers are around to kill you as you travel winding roads. So watch out! It is most suitable for day time visiting with family and friends. There are a lot of interesting lookouts, falls, and parklands but the nearly reservoir is closed this year.

My wife and I enjoyed a lovely picnic for our 1st anniversary. Lovely area, saw some awesome wildlife, all was going well until a kookaburra swooped down and stole some prosciutto right out of my wife's hand as she was putting it up to her mouth! I guess that's why there's signs up all over the place about NOT FEEDING THE BIRDS! Anyway, it made for a good laugh and a great story. Highly recommend, but beware of chubby thieving kookaburras.

Beautiful forest walks! I’ve been three times, twice entering from Upper Fern Tree Gully, and once from Belgrave (both by metro rail). Belgrave gets you close to the Sherbrooke forest area, and a number of paths good for spotting a variety of birds, including lyrebirds. The upper fern tree gully station brings you less than a mile’s walk to the base of the Thousand Steps/Kokoda Memorial Walk. The “thousand steps” up into the park are certainly steep, but the feeling of entering the rainforest and climbing up into the ranges is so worth it. There’s two routes up quite close to each other; I recommend both! This area is popular and you will always see other people, but one can still hear the sounds of bird calls echoing from the trees. Once you get to the top of the thousand steps, there is a campground nearby (with public restrooms). From that campground you can head further into the forests, and it gets much quieter. During and after rain, some tracks do get very muddy, but I found hiking in the light rain to still be enjoyable, and many of the larger paths were not so muddy. The terrain is fairly hilly, but none of the peaks in the areas nearby the metro rail are very high on their own. As a solo hiker, the area felt very safe :)

Nice area for bush walking and having a nice day walking around. Just be aware not to feed the local birds as we were warned from the ranger it's a $400 fine per bird. But birds are friendly to visit if you have food.

There are lots of scenic spots for a family picnic. The walking routes in the garden are well structured. It's very nice to explore different sections of the garden on foot, especially when the weather is good. The shadow in the pond was excellent. Just a beautiful walk/ride through the tall gums and ferns of the Dandenong ranges. We started from Olinda - the basin road on range track, down Bradley track and back up school track behind sassafras. If you want to exercise and enjoy nature try this not too strenuous and beautiful walk.

(Translated by Google) In mid-May, three friends and I visited the Dandenong Botanical Garden, where we had a great time. First, the walking route in the garden is well structured. It is very nice to explore the different parts of the garden on foot, especially when the weather is nice. Secondly, we saw the scene of three colors of green, red and yellow at the same time. The shadow in the pond is beautiful. Finally, the logo is clear and the label under the plant provides sufficient information. We had a great time there, and the surrounding environment was also very good (I went to Sky Cafe for pies before, and then went to Puffing Billy Railway, both within 15-20 minutes.), highly recommended there Spend half a day.

Worth an hour drive from Melbourne to visit with cockatoos in wild. These birds are fun to visit. Lots of them. Unfortunately feeding birds has discontinued since Feb'20 still these make it a sight. Few small walks in vicinity and lots of parking space available. There is a cafe too for handy refreshments and souvenirs. One shed area for people to sit and eat. Couple of bbq and open sky seating too. Clean public toilet available.

This is a beautiful place to enjoy green space, birds and a variety of walks for all levels (including a disabled accessible walk). The temperate rainforest with tall mountain ash, tree ferns, sulphur crested cockatoos, kookaburras and crimson rosellas is always a treat. There's a little gift shop and cafe at Grants picnic grounds. By the way, it seems they are no longer allowing any sort of bird feeding at the park, not even in the paid area.

I found this little guy in the middle of Mulhalls road in Macclesfield thought he'd been run over so I took him to the vet, he was fine so I took him back home. Eastern Long neck turtle.

5 star for its beauty and the walks. But 1 star for the Cockatoo feeding. The authorities need to update their website and let customers know that they do not allow feeding of the Cockatoo any longer. It took us more than an hour to get there only to find out that it's closed. Upon inquiring, the cafe lady told us that they have closed the feeding activity.

Much quieter than pre-COVID but steps are one-way and no overtaking. Lyrebird track is both dire tons so a good option. Most people are casual walkers instead of doing fitness so in some ways a nicer walk at ghe moment

Beautiful park with lots of seating areas for a picnic etc. If you feeling adventurous then take the 1000steps. Currently 1 way up due to social distancing requirements, but that is actually ideal as the steps can be quite narrow and not many places to pass on. But don't take it lightly, it can be a challenge.

Went on a Sunday and it was teeeeming with people! You can tell the forest / bushland here is magical. In the few moments of silence we had amongst the ferns, vines and huge trees it really was otherwordly. So much moss, and interesting fungi. But like I said, lots of visitors on the weekend (ourselves included) - it felt more like a fitness centre than a bush trail at times. But if you go, make sure you look UP and deep into the trees! ... and maybe go mid week.

Pretty good place for a fresh walk not very far from the CBD but far enough to be in a relaxing and quite place 👍 The only annoying point is those people who rush the 1000 steps, push you to be faster and then take a break out of breath. You overtake them and etc... pretty annoying Don’t try to act like a tough guy if you are out of breath just by climbing a few steps, that’s pathetic and annoying for the people who just wanna enjoy a little relaxing walk.

Great place for a walk, or jog. Location of the 1,000 steps which is a favorite by everyone, but also other trails head up to One Tree Hill which are worth checking out and normally not as busy. Also much longer walks out the back of One Tree hill to enjoy.

I wanted to explore some of Melbourne's hiking trails and Dandenong Ranges National Park did not disappoint. Just a little over an hour on the train + bus from Southern Cross station, you are almost immediately ensconced in a fern forest with tall trees, the song of birds and the telltale kookaburra, a slight breeze rustling the branches, and a pleasurable shade up the Kokoda Trail (1000 Steps). I took the Rambler Trail > Kokoda Trail > Ramu Trail > Bellview Terrace. It was a long loop that took almost 3 hours total, but it was totally worth it. While there's a bit of incline and stairs, there are informational plaques about WWII along the way. I absolutely loved that a place like this is so close and accessible from the central business district. If you're looking to spend half a day in nature in Melby, the Dandenong Ranges National Park is a great place to be!

This is a mecca for bushwalking. You can walk for years here enjoying the variation in terrain, forest, and difficulty and still be finding new places to explore. Best of all, coffee is never too far away and there is always a sport cut back to the car if needed. Just make sure you have a good mapping app.
