Plenty of restrooms in the carpark. BBQs available and a cafe. (Check opening hours.) Plenty of walks. If you get up there early you can see lyrebirds and Wallabies.

This is a great place for fitness or just to enjoy the surrounds. Excellent in summer as the ferns provide a natural evaporative cooling effect. If you're interested in climbing to the top you can either progress via the actual thousand steps or the newer fitness path. If your primary goal is fitness, use the newer track. There's fitness stations on the way up for abs etc. and more space to allow overtaking. The steps are also far more even on the fitness path so if you're intending to do them at pace, there's a lower risk of injury. The thousand steps themselves are set out with historic markers and are a much narrower path. The steps are very uneven, but aesthetically it's a preferable climb. Tourists intending to walk the steps, definitely go this route. Also, once either path is completed, don't stop. Go the little bit further and check out the memorials on one tree hill. It's only another couple of hundred metres. If this review was helpful at all, please "like" so I know if it's worthwhile bothering to write them :). Thanks!

Great walk. Tough but rewarding climb amongst lovely trees and vegetation. Can get slippery. Plenty of rest stops. The walk is one way with the descent via all alternative path. As such recommend you don't start unless you can finish it. Instead use the alternate path for training. Clean toilet facilities and water bottle filling station at the bottom. Lots of trails to go from at the top if you want a bigger day out.

Tranquil (weekday winter day) spectacular walk, showcasing some of Australias most beautiful flora ! priceless ! Walking path well kept but take care during winter as a little muddy. No dogs allowed.

Super gorgeous trail! It’s a bit difficult for me to finish the entire route but good thing there’s a smaller loop. Will definitely come back again for the challenge

Great walking trails in an amazing area. We visited it during weekdays, which was not crowded and there were heaps of available parking lots. At least mid level fitness is required to enjoy the track.

The Kokoda Memorial Walk, famously known as The Thousand Steps, is an awe-inspiring journey through nature and history. Surrounded by lush greenery, the walk provides a challenging yet invigorating experience, perfect for both fitness enthusiasts and those seeking a connection with nature. The memorial plaques along the trail add a poignant touch, honoring the Australian soldiers who served in Papua New Guinea during World War II. The breathtaking views from the summit reward your efforts, making this trek a must for anyone looking to combine physical activity with reflection and scenic beauty.

Great place to be outdoors with amazing scenery. I like taking the Kokoda & Lyrebird trails. Good workout when you climb the steps. It is good for all ages and you can go at your own pace and enjoy the beautiful surroundings

This is my favour place to go for a workout. It’s beautiful all the way up. If you are crazy enough to go when it rains then you will have the absolute best time ever. You will see all the waterfalls and streams going all the way up.

Exhausting but good exercise, saw a little critter on our way up which was too cute and gave us energy to finish the climb

Great walking track, steep hike to the top of the 1000 stairs. Requires moderate fitness. Recently had new public toilets put in at the base of the stairs, near the carpark and cafe. Beautiful spot to explore nature, only a short drive out of Melbourne's Eastern suburbs. Honours the Kokoda trail legacy. Popular spot, gets very busy on the weekends, and carpark can get full. Also too many people on the narrow stairs make it less enjoyable to hike. Prefer to go during the week, not as busy.

What a brilliant place to go to for a Saturday morning walk. Good exercise as you burn those unwanted calories. It gets really crowded in the morning and the worst is when you got sweaty people running past you. There a healthy junkie here that run up and down the steps. It is quite narrow so best time to go is in the afternoon when there is a lesser crowd. If you got time there is a BBQ facilities here, first come first serve, there are no rubbish bin so you will need to take all your rubbish home. Public toilet is available so don't worry. You won't need to go into the bushes for a number 1. You can do the circuit track, go up the 1000 steps (crowded and narrow) and then go down on the different route (wider space, enough room for everybody to walk). At the base there is a kids playground so if you got young kids and don't want to walk up the 1000 steps you can play with them here. Don't forget to read the memorial information board.

The Kokoda Memorial Park is an amazing experience for those who want to do a great exercise, or for those who want to learn more about the history of Australia. I encourage everyone to come and see the experience for yourself

Must be relatively fit to walk up unless you go very slow.

The steps are very difficult and challenging on your fitness but a lot of rest stops are provided so it's possible to complete even with a lower fitness level

The website says tracks are closed due to storm damage but they are open again. Parking was easy. Several trails, check the website I was not able to walk them because I'm really unfit.

Take the Lyrebird track up instead. Less people, higher elevation gains (marginal) and better workout.

Fantastic, challenging walk. The facilities and facts are great, although I always collect plastic waste along the way. Please help keep it beautiful people!

Went on Christmas Day in the arvo, loved that there was barely anyone! There was also plenty of shade on the way up and down but still smart to slip, slip and slap for the walls to the car!

I’d refer to this hike similar to a sprint. It’s short and snappy but still has the ability to take it out of you. Honestly though, I think the appeal in this walk is in the rainforest natural scenery accompanied by the added bonus information about the second world War and the kokoda trail/ campaign associated with the real Kakoda trail in Papua New Guinea. Even if you’re not interested in a history lesson it’s still a good scenic way to burn off some extra energy. Would strongly recommend going during non peek periods as it can get rather popular on the busy ones.

LOVE it here. Fantastic place to work out in nature. Family friendly. BBQ area, playground, learn about the Kokoda trail, see Australian animals in their natural environment.

One of the best hiking places I have seen in Melbourne with no so much crowd, parking is subjected to availability, cuz there are car parks available, however they are full most of the time. Plus, U.F.T Gully station is near, so you can go by metro trains.

This is a beautiful, tough walk that often takes people by surprise. It's also generally very busy! Great to come here first thing in the morning or a little later in the day but be prepared for a tough climb! If you struggle along the gravel path up to the steps, be very wary that the steps themselves are much harder. Make sure you take advantage of the stopping points to catch your breath and take water. The area itself is really beautiful and a few spots along the climb have a lovely view. Maintenance does an excellent job keeping the place beautiful.

It isn't the best hiking experience because a climber always expects a view when s/he finishes the climb. But, hey, nobody said there was a good view at the end anyway :) Other than that with several stops, it is not a difficult climb walk for anybody. The nature is great though, old trees, lots of oxygen, all people aimed to reach the top gives you an energy. Once you finished, you feel good about yourself, too. I was also told that you will spend one calory per climbing each step, so at the end, you are able to burn 1000 calories. Well, that is also helpful for your mood while climbing :)

I love walking here! Nice place to start your fitness journey or to just challenge yourself. It's easy to get here even if you don't own a car. But be prepared to have sore legs on the next day xD
