A decent meal of goods flavours but with slow service, despite the empty dining room, it was a little disappointing. Not necessarily going to set the world alight, but a reliable option, especially after a night at Sadlers Wells.

Food was lovely and the flavours were full and interesting. They’ve got a few other restaurants in London too and I highly recommend. Awesome to see a fully plant based menu now 👏 Stand out dishes were the courgette flower, oyster mushroom and moussaka

Decent vegetarian food here. I had the moussaka and enjoyed it. But I feel like it’s not filling enough for my personal preferred dinner portion. We also sat in the corner so it was hard to order sometimes. But nonetheless it wasn’t too bad!

I used to come here religiously before the pandemic. I decided to come back again and to my dismay service is absolutely LACKING!!! No smiles or friendliness. And when you want to pay, the manager on shift decides to stay by the pass and go to each customer to take their payments but not yours. My partner and I waited 25mins just to pay for a bill. Even to the point of actually going to the till and asking 'is the meal free, do you want us to pay?' to which the super laxed manager replied 'yeah if you want'. *Owners of the gate be mindful of those you put in charge to run your restaurant and be the face of your company. It's your money/resources going down the drain and moreover your reputation- I'm never coming back or to the Marleybone branch where I've seen the same laxed attitude and felt bad vibes. You've lost two customers tonight and I'll be sure to tell all of my family/friends/followers who frequent this previously wonderful establishment*

We had lunch here for 8 people. Lovely presented food and very tasty. Nice staff and great Veggie food.. didn't have enough time to try the desserts but they looked delicious! There were only two staff that did waitering and greeting and one bar staff who did drinks. The restaurant was full of customer's at lunch time and so there was some delays with ordering drinks and food. They need more staff during peek times.

In

Superbly presented menu and plates, staff were friendly and welcoming. Our group of eight autistic people enjoyed the experience, a great choice of wines and beers, with complementary matching. We stayed on for pudding. Will definitely come here again. Extra: toilets come in three genders!

I am giving this restaurant 3 stars because of a couple of really lovely waiting staff. However, that's where the good stuff ends sadly. I had not visited this restaurant for about 4 years and was very disappointed with the food and management. The starter of courgette flower was almost cold inside - but I was hungry so didn't mind to much. I then ordered the "steak" which was burnt around the edges and super chewy. The steak was extremely salty while the rest of the dish (sauce, broccoli, etc) was not seasoned enough. I didn't finish it and when I told the waitress why, she informed her manager who more or less shrugged. Perhaps she should have been inspecting the dishes before they left the pass? Then we asked for the bill and another member of staff brought it to us - she was extremely unfriendly and put it on the table without even acknowledging us - I have no idea why she works in this industry when she quite obviously hates it. This was a sad day, as we used to rave about the vegetarian fine dining experience there. Now it's over-priced pre-show pub grub at best. Our bill was over a hundred pounds too. The tables have been increased, so you can forget about an intimate dinner, its more like a cafe. We will not be returning!

*Overall Review at the last paragraph ✓ All Vegetarian and Mostly Vegan SUNDAY ROAST [3 courses for £22.50]: Crispy Marinate Tofu (Starter) – Fried tofu marinated in maple syrup & soy sauce with a quinoa, avocado & tomato salsa, coriander & lemon dressing; Artichoke Terrine (Starter) – Truffle & hazelnut infused artichoke, homemade sundried tomato & basil salsa, grilled bread; Beetroot Cheese Burger (Main) – Pretzel bun, smoked tomato relish, cornichons & raw vegetable salad with wholegrain mustard & maple dressing with vegan cheese; Root Vegetable, Chestnut & Sage Wellington (Main) with roasted potatoes, seasonal vegetables, madeira sauce; Peanut Butter Brownie (Dessert) with vanilla ice-cream & chocolate sauce As The Gate is known as a vegetarian restaurant that has been around for many years, I was really excited to have my lunch here with a friend. We were here on a Sunday, and both opted for the Sunday 3 course lunch menu. Both the starters we got were amazing! The crispy marinate tofu was nicely fried – crispy batter and tender tofu inside that had a tasty marinate. It was served on a generous bed of quinoa that was delicious with the salsa. The coriander & lemon dressing added zing and lightness to the dish. The artichoke terrine was so good! Buttery, creamy and very flavourful! The salsa was fresh and fragrant. The grilled bread was crispy which was perfect for the soft terrine. To me, the mains we got wasn’t as outstanding as the starters. The Wellington had a nice and flaky pastry, but it wasn’t my favourite because the filling was more sweet than savoury (too much sweet potato). The veg wasn’t as well roasted too. The burger was ok. It was tasty and I liked the pretzel bun. There was nothing special/outstanding about it to me, nevertheless, a solid well-made vegan burger. The Peanut Butter brownie? Very decadent – moist, fudgy and gooey. It is a bit too sweet for me, and the vanilla ice-cream served as the perfect balance for the richness of it. Needless to say, the peanut butter and chocolate goes perfectly together with the hints of nutty and salty flavour to it. The restaurant has a simple and contemporary décor. The staff could be more attentive to our needs, they were quite slow too. One thing is the table we sat at, there was a time when the sunlight was shining directly at my friend. Not only was it hot, the strong sunlight was distracting too as it was shining right at his eyes (he had to squint). Very uncomfortable yet the waiter/waitress was hesitant to let us switch tables when there were plenty of free tables. Please, add some curtains or shades to the windows! It is very uncomfortable for customers at the tables by the window! Overall, food of solid quality and taste. Some were not as good as the others, but generally above average! The prices are on the expensive side, but I think it’s reasonable for the portion and quality you get. From my experience, you can’t go wrong here with good Vegetarian/Vegan food (that will probably satisfy a non-veggie too!) – so I do recommend The Gate for special occasions/when you want to treat yourself.

Great all vegan restaurant. The set menu is 3 courses for £22 is well worth it! The portions are good size and well presented. The service was friendly and attentive. The acoustics arent great though you can struggle to hear each other even when the restaurant isnt full. But the food is deffinatly worth a visit.

Very good vegetarian dishes. Made to order; tastes fresh. The atmosphere is great in a large room but has the feeling of a cosy old pub. Large windows make the space light. When we arrived the table was ready with high chair already there for our baby. Super service! Very enjoyable Sunday brunch with our little one.

Tasty vegetarian (almost everything is vegan!) menu. Standout dish was the chipotle mushrooms with polenta. 4 stars because it felt quite pricey for the portion sizes and we waited 25 minutes for some drinks when it wasn't particularly busy and when we reminded the waitress she didn't particularly care.

Took a carnivore with me to this wonderful restaurant and they couldn’t stop talking about how much they enjoyed it! The onion tart starter was delicious and beautifully presented. My red Thai curry main was warming but not too hot even with the fresh chillies. Sides of fresh broccoli and polenta chips were both devoured! And the tiramisu (shared) was one of the lightest I’ve ever tasted - super presentation too. Overall theme: Flavour!

Fantastic food at The Gate. Majority of the menu is plant-based (not sure they have anything that isn't). Ordered the Seitan and Cauliflower Shawarma with Kimchi Stuffed Sushi Balls. Both were excellent and flavoursome. Prosecco was a lovely addition. Blackberry cheesecake was sweet and smooth too. It's London so it's on the pricier side. Highly recommended for plant-based options in Islington and particularly for pre-ballet dining. Sadler's Wells is just down the road.

We had an excellent dinner experience at The Gate in Islington. The starters, mains and desserts were all flavoursome and exceptional value for money. The service was great and our waitress was attentive and friendly. We would highly recommend this restaurant to others!

I really wanted to love this restaurant, as I rarely have a treat where I am spoiled for choice to choose anything off a menu. This was a birthday dinner from my hubby, and let me tell you, the food was sensational. Everything was perfect, tasty, and simply delicious. Even my hubby, whom is a meat eater loved the grub, and couldn't fault anything. Portions were spot on as well not too much, not too small. Perfect. Unfortunately we seemed to be sitting at the invisible table. And I mean it in the nicest way, as staff just didn't seem to notice we existed after serving us the starters. And I am not kidding, after finishing the starter, we had our empty plates sitting in front of us for over half an hour, when we decided jut simply take matters into our own hands, and put them on the empty table next to us, hoping this will be noticed. No such luck. Another 15 minutes and when the main came out, dirty plates were still there. :-D So same situation seemed to be after mains, so I just took matters into my on hands after an other 20 mins of waiting, and started waiving around hoping I will be noticed. This tactic worked, so I just kept up with it until we finished. Can not say staff was insufficient, just that they might need a bit more training, and to be more attentive. We usually leave tips even if there is a service charge as we know how hard people work in the service industry, but today I almost felt like they do not deserve the service charge either. We had 3 courses, and as the restaurant has a 2 hour window policy they did hurry up by the end, but we literally had our dessert 15 mins before the 2 hours were up, because of the slow service. Oh, and we did not get any cutlery to eat it with. Further hand waving was required after we waited for 10 mins for someone to clue in and get us some forks. :-D Real shame, as I did love the food.

Good food and drinks - loved the alcohol free Elverleaf spritz. Staff were overall very friendly and helpful, only one person who was a bit hostile when we had waited over 20 minutes for a drink and asked them if the order had gone through. The place was also quite empty when service became slow but didn't feel so comfortable to ask about orders to the one member of staff serving us due to the first response we had. The toilets were also quite unclean and smelt quite bad, a small that also travelled a bit into the restaurant area. Overall food good but atmosphere not so much. Not sure I would go back to this one, would be open to trying the other sites.

Excellent restaurant - the fully vegan menu provided a wide range of flavours and textures. I can't recommend it highly enough. Good range of wine (all vegan - such a treat). If you like spicy cocktails, give the jalapeno infused 'Le Boss Margarita' a try - it took a lot of willpower to stick to only one!

Delicious and incredibly creative menu. Amazing service. Classy vibes. Great drinks. I really enjoyed my experience here, which is why I’m giving it 5 starts; however- management please fix the plumbing issue. There was a faintly grotesque smell at my table - when I went to use the Loo I realized it was the entire downstairs where the bathrooms are that smell HORRIBLY foul. That being said the service and food are so incredible I can’t give it less than 5 stars

The food is amazing, I went to the gate Restaurant for the first time in 1999 and had the Aubergine Schnitzel , but they have improved it since. It reminded me of my mums cooking, but a vegan version of it! The lemon sauce was so tasty and rich. My wife had the katsu curry (incredibly subtle taste) and I had the beetroot and mascarpone mousse, with a slightly bitter/sweet taste). The quantity of food was just right and the price reasonable given the top notch quality. The wine was not of a great quality though given the £26 price tag.

Best food I've eaten I'm recent memory. The miso maple aubergine was delicious! My main tortilla was very fillyling and flavoursome... & the dessert 😍 oh my! Tasted so much like profiterole! Yummy! Also had a lovely busy atmosphere and our waiter was fab! Thank you!

Really great lunch here in this lovely dining room. Tasty vegetarian menu that is a cut above most London restaurants. They have an extensive bar too. We’ll try dinner here next time : yes we are definitely coming back.

My wife and I went there 16/2/23. The food and service were absolutely superb. The waiting staff were very attentive (as soon as you glanced up they were there) but not at all intrusive. The food was amazing - highlights of our meal were the Crispy Courgette Flower, the Miso Glazed Aubergine, the Wild Mushroom Risotto Cake (really, really great, earthy mushrooms), the Aubergine Schnitzel and the Cannoli. Couldn't fault any of it. We'll definitely be returning soon.

A superb establishment that serves outstanding food. Although it may appear humble and simple on the outside the food served is outstanding and all merit and compliments should go to the owners, chef and staff. It may only serve vegetarian food but it is definitely worth the money. Again outstanding.

I loved it. What a wonderful place. Everything in the place - menus - is vegan. Mostly gluten free, but anything that is, is well published on the e menu and staff can advise. Since nuts are used for some dishes, it's not nut free but again well marked and the staff knows. Anything that looks like meat or fish isn't - it's 100% vegan. But it looks real and tastes like the real deal. Best of all, or maybe next best from the quality and content is the price. Most reasonable for what you get anywhere these days, and the portions are huge. The staff was wonderful and friendly, and the building is an oldie but lovingly and tastefully restored. This place would be special anyway, but it's vegan menu make it unique. Highly recommended.

As always a great mix of refreshing flavours. Had the mushroom risotto and the aubergine teriyaki noodles for mains. Have to say though, nothing beats the courgette flower starter - second time I've come back just for this!

I wanted to use a gift card. I put the voucher number in the booking, and told the staff of the voucher upon arrival (as stated to do in the t&c written on the voucher). I read the t&c ahead of time, and there was NO mention of expiration date or how long it was good for. I had received it as a gift 2 years ago, so it was a little old but not ancient. When I tried to use the voucher, I was told it was not good anymore and had expired. It was for £50. It was not a massive meal. The staff became increasingly rude, telling me that I should’ve known this and the person who bought me the voucher as a gift should’ve told me and therefore it was my fault. They admitted that the t&c didn’t mention that and it could be written better, but that it wasn’t their fault. At one point they showed me that when you purchase the gift card it shows that it expires in 12 months. Yet it’s a GIFT card, the person who is going to use it isn’t the person purchasing it. It took about 5 conversations between the staff and the manager for the manager to finally agree to honour it, while my partner and I sat for 30 minutes waiting. Honestly one of the most humiliating dining experiences. I will never eat here again. The food was fine, but nothing special. There are better vegetarian/vegan restaurants in London.

Dear staff, Thank you to all the staff and cooks for providing amazing food, the roasted cauliflower with pomegranates with lovely dressing. Main meal was also great, Vegan Corden bleu, great combination of flavours. Chunky Herb Polenta Chips, and sauce, next level tastes. Thanks Danny, and the other two lady’s working the floor, sorry about forgetting your names, really nice and helpful. Thank you, Be back soon.

Don't understand how anyone could rate this below a four. Visited this restaurant a number of times and every time the service and food has been impeccable. One of my favourite vegetarian restaurants in London

  • 4/5 Miriam A. 1 year ago on Google
The service was very friendly and professional and the food was really tasty, too. There are only two things that, in my opinion, could be improved: it was very noisy (not sure about a solution here), and there used to be filtered water with cucumber, instead of tap. Maybe some light background music would have been nice.

Outstanding vegan food, the cordon bleu was one of the best dishes I've had in years. Staff were very accommodating, attentive and professional. The food was also reasonably priced. Definitely would go again.

Really disappointed as was looking forward to my visit. Poor service experienced. My friend and I visited last night. The table next to us, who arrived after us, had their food arrive before we had even had our drinks order taken! We had to flag someone to order drinks. Olives forgotten, again had to flag someone to chase. Food mediocre. Had to chase someone for the bill after asking for it when the plates were taken as the bill didn't turn up. We left without ordering dessert which is unheard of for us.

Dined here on Saturday night. Service (food) was extremely slow, it took almost 1h for the main dish to come. Food was not great - not a lot of plant based protein on dish, they were pretty oily/fatty. Pate in burger was too saturated with vegan fat, couldn't even eat the half of it.

Used to go to The Gate in Hammersmith which was excellent so thought I would give this place a go. The initial impression was great - lovely looking place and a very sweet waitress who saw us to out table and got us drinks. After that it was all down hill - the starters were good but the main courses were very average and one was accompanied by a "salad" which consisted of chunks of iceberg lettuce, cucumber and tomatoes in mayonnaise. We asked for a green salad and it didn't arrive - after 2 asks it came but was exactly the same as the one that came with our meal! Our 2nd (main) waitress was so surly that I'm surprises she could even be bothered to speak to us. Won't be going back and certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone else. What a shame...

One of the top restaurants in London... even if you love meat. Been there many times and take out of town guests and each one has been blown away by the food. Even my mom loves the spot 😂. You forgot that there are no meat options as everything on the menus sounds amazing. That you want to try everything right there.
