I stayed in a double room with private washroom: - The heat, fan and air conditioner blowed directly on my face (even after setting the direction of the air). I wake up coughing from dryness. - Cold draft on my head from the window. I slept the other way. - Window cannot be opened at all for "safety reasons" for fresh air. Not even an inch. - Only one hook in the bathroom to hang one towel for two.

Beds were tough, and people were allowed to use the kitchen without properly cleaning up after themselves. It's otherwise a great place in the perfect location. I'm sad to see they don't staff the coffee bar or do much on the roof anymore, as people several years back have reviewed such amenities.

Hands down the best hostel experience I've had in all my travels. The staff is friendly, the rooms are comfortable and the facilities are immaculate. Not to mention the location is great and price was affordable for what we got. I would highly recommend staying here during your trip to Kyoto!

Room is just basic. No breakfast served, though identified as included in booking. WiFi was not working when needed the most.

If there is one hotel to stay in Kyoto, the Piece Hostel Sanjo is it. Nothing can touch Piece Hostel Sanjo except Lux & Palmolive! The ambience and layout of this hostel is immaculate, warm and so inviting. The staff were extremely professional & friendly. Kudos to Jessica-san. The check-in process very quick & efficient. We stayed in a double room c/w shower & toilet facilities. The lobby and rest area was out of this world. What you see in the pictures is really what you will be getting. Trust me! Just one word....Awesome! You never try, you'll never know how good this hostel is. It's so beautiful that I've already cancelled our April & November bookings. There are better accommodation elsewhere. It's a nice hostel but the attitude of the full-time staff needs to improve. Update: (12 Feb 2023). There is a staff called souta. Extremely rude!!! I asked for a cube of ice from the East wing & he rudely told me to go back to the West wing to get it. Just 1 ice cube??? He was in the kitchen & rudely told me that i cannot get ice cubes as he was busy cooking. But he has the time to tell me to go back to the West wing to get ice cubes. Why? If you are having a bad day as a staff of The Piece Sanjo, I strongly suggest you keep it to yourself. Do not take it out on the guest. We pay you your salary. Not happy, don't work at The Piece Sanjo. Go work sonewhere else as a manager. Better still, be your own bloody boss!!! If the kitchen area is for staff only, please place a signage and say so! Besides, if the kitchen is off limits to guests, how on earth is the guests going to wash the utensils after use? Leave the utensils at the counter? Who is going to wash them? I checked with the reception & they told me i am able to get ice from either East or West wing as I'm a guest here. So why the disparity? You make me walk from the East wing to the West wing & the West wing back to the East wing, just for a piece of ice cube? Please...the ice cube would've melted by then!! Management must have a standardise procedure please! Dropping 4 stars. (Suggestion): Maybe you can place a small bucket of ice cubes between the 2 water dispensers so the guests would not trouble the staff. (Imho). Recommended to avoid unless you you love the facade. But really??? Just for the facade??? Thank goodness we've got another night to go! Can't wait to get the hell outta here! Update: (13 Feb 2023). The manager Dennis came to me & apologized profusely for the incident. After our conversation, I noticed that signages were now placed clearly around the lounge at B1 East Wing. He offered a refund to us. However, we declined the offer.

I’ve stayed the hotel before, absolutely this time also great. It’s good location and kindly staffs, nice clean room and sharing spaces. I enjoyed coffee the cafe space with my friend in the morning. The rooftop was great atmosphere in night time, you can bring up snacks and drinks to enjoy before go back the room. I’ll definitely come back.

Great place with such a unique Zen atmosphere. The people at the desk were very kind and friendly. The location is just next to the Market, Kyoto main street and many local bars and restaurants. We enjoyed all the facilities. Each piece of furniture, tree, and stone were well designed.

Great location, wonderful service, and excellent facilities. Piece Hostel Sanjo was the perfect spot for my wife and I to stay at in Kyoto for our short vacation. It has everything you would need to include a kitchen, bar area, and common areas. I 100% recommend this hostel for anyone looking to enjoy their trip to Kyoto.

Very clean and modern. Staff are very friendly and will attend to your needs straight away. If you can't sleep, they can give you earplugs, too. For the low price you pay, you also get free breakfast which was more than sufficient (croissants, toast, rice, sausages, pickled veges... the list goes on). They have a really nice cafe/pub and if you show them your keycard you also get the coffee for free! I heard that the rooftop is beautiful but as it was raining hard during my stay, I didn't get a chance to look. Also if language barrier is a concern of yours, don't worry! From what I saw they all speak English and some speak Chinese, too. Really happy with my stay, especially at the price they offer.

I stayed in a bunk room with a friend in June 2023. The bed was comfortable and clean, the shower was hot and had soap, shampoo, and conditioner. The room had a mini fridge and complimentary slippers for the room. On the roof was a nice terrace with lots of seats and lounges. There were other amenities like a gym, laundry, and day lockers that I personally did not use. Make sure to bring/show your passport.

Great common spaces, early check in allowed. But I decided to change to staying in hotels since the mattress was uncomfortable and duvet and towel quality is very low. Hotel room is only slightly more cost than a private room here.

A well priced, well located hostel in a convenient location in Kyoto. From here there is easy access to the public transport system. The room we stayed in had a private bathroom which can be selected, but cheaper rooms are available with shared facilities. Something important to note is the baggage holding system, which is very useful for the traveller. Across from the hostel itself is a self-lockup system to hold bags during check-in/checkout days which allows you to wander Kyoto as you like without having to worry about dragging big bags with you.

I am still shook that this place has only 2 stars??? I also wouldn’t really call this place a hostel… the rooms are SO NICE, so well designed, and SPACIOUS!! I honestly was expecting just a regular hostel and this totally exceeded my expectations. I would say this was one of my favorite places I stayed in Japan, you really can’t beat it for the price! Plus the vibe was very chill and welcoming unlike other hostels I went to in Japan. Highly recommend!

We stayed in the 4 ppl bedroom. It is huge!! and very clean. Bathroom is decent and functional. We are delighted to find that hotel is very close to restaurants and shopping area. Super convenient. Staff is helpful as well.

This is the nicest hostel I’ve stayed at! So modern and clean, the rooftop terrace is beautiful. Great location and the staff were all very friendly.

Modern hostel, completely in black giving it a great look. An East and West (with kitchen) side. Nice roof terrace. Great lobby down stairs. Excellent location. No chair or desk in the room. The bar down stairs only opened for a few hours on Friday and Saturday evening (September 2023). I was expecting a bit more lively hostel.

Wonderful hostel Great facilities Free jazz on Saturday night Shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and hair dryers included Spacious beds and sink in room Easy to replace towels Lots of free items to borrow e.g extra pillow, phone charger, umbrella etc Can leave luggage until 8pm the next day Nice common spaces 11am checkout Accommodation tax 200yen per person per night (not just this hostel) Lighting situation in rooms is not great. A light with a sensor as you walk in the door so everyone gets woken up by the light if you need the bathroom in the middle of the night. However I mentioned this to reception and they turned off the light altogether for us. Lighting not great in the rest of the room. But still would recommend this. Not much space for hanging anything/storing anything but still enough space for luggage on floor and under bed

The location of the hostel is great with subway station nearby and lots of restaurants and shopping places such as Nishiki Market. Front desk is helpful and staff is multilingual. The facility of the hostel is way beyond expectations specially the kitchen. Room is spacious by Japan standard. It’s clean and quiet. Highly recommended.

WOW! Absolutely beautiful hostel that is more beautiful than many other hotels I've stayed in. I booked a room with my own double bed, which had its own sink. Because of this, I only had to share the toilet and shower with others. Beautiful kitchen, lounge area with lots of books to borrow. There is a PiPPA bike rental right out front if you want to rent a bike for ¥1,100 a day. The staff were friendly and one of them was kind enough to help me book a restaurant reservation in Japanese, which is very common when travelling here. Highly recommend! If I had to be critical about one thing, I would like a bit more storage or shelving in the room.

Great hostel, more like a hotel then a hostel but with a great price. Clean modern facilities with nice communal space and roof terrace. We booked the double room with private bathroom. Size was great compared with other more expensive accomodation we have stayed in Japan. Location is great easy train access and walking distance to all the shops, restaurants and bars. Easily the best place we have stayed in Japan.

Very nice, new and comfortable hostel. Also has single rooms with private bath. Beds were biggest beds during our Japan Trip. Staff was very nice as well! Great location and also has a station for share-bikes which can be rented via Pippa App

We got a double room with private bathroom for our 4 nights in Kyoto. Room was as expected in Japan, cosy and minimalist. Not a lot of storage for clothing but otherwise worked well for us. Just a few minutes walk from Nishiki market and about 8 minutes walk from nearest subway station. We were able to explore the nearby Gion neighborhood by foot, and took about 15-20 minutes to get there from Piece Hostel. Overall very good location to explore Kyoto. Staff were friendly and helpful. We didn't use the shared kitchen but it looked very clean and had plenty of utensils etc.

The hostel is well located, close too many bars, restaurants and tourist attractions. The architecture and interior design of the hostel are modern and exceptionally beautiful. However I found that some facilities and details were not carefully chosen, so in the end our stay wasn't that comfortable. Given the price, I would have expected more attention to details. Here the points that I didn't like: - in the double room (super small, but this is usual in Japan) there were not enough hanger for the towels - there was no electricity socket on one side of the bed, and no bed lamps - the kitchen, despite being so modern and amazingly looking, was missing cups and cutlery (in the morning it was really hard to find a mug and a spoon). Also, there is free tea and coffee, but the tea bags were usually gone early in the morning, so it was hard to take advantage of it.

Pretty good place for foreigners. Some of the rooms aren't suitable for taller people, a couple of sharp corners in there as well, just be careful, had a few head knocks. Facilities however were top notch, mostly clean and well thought out - no complaints on that at all. Note, the listed gym is actually located elsewhere around 5 mins away. Only loses a star because some rules are just not enforced, eg. people smoking in bathrooms. Would be here again if in the area.

One of the greatest stays I had. It nicely combines shared spaces with privacy and the option of single rooms with private bathrooms. The whole Hostel facility is beautifully designed and integrates well into the Kyōto charme. Staff is very friendly and international.

Such a nice place! Very close to Nishiki market. We had a private room which was pretty small. Bed was hard and room was slightly cold. But we only stayed a night and it worked with our budget. We enjoyed their rooftop and café areas. Staff is kind and helpful.

I loved my stay here. The staff were super friendly and helpful. The room was well equipped and the blackout shades made the room completely dark (which I love!). I also attended a few special events the hostel was hosting- like a meditation/calligraphy/tea ceremony as well as a yoga class. The location was also close to the subway and within walking distance of some cute areas of the city. Highly recommend staying here!

This is the prettiest hostel I have ever stayed in. From the entrance, the downstairs bar and the roof top area, it seems like serious thought was given to make the areas as welcoming and aesthetically pleasing as possible. We, as four guests, had a great stay in two different private rooms. We enjoyed the morning breakfast, with the egg drop soup on the second morning a stand out. We loved the jazz band playing one night and the soy cappuccino I had was my best coffee in Japan (as Australians we are spoilt for coffee). The rooms are quite spacious, especially the room with the double bed, in comparison to others during our travels. Our bathroom was well set out with complimentary shampoo etc. The hostel is well situated. We enjoyed exploring the area especially the markets.

A very nice and clean place. Friendly stuff that always smiles at you. The dorm rooms are not the most spacious but the beds are comfortable and they come with a small locker for your belongings. The breakfast is actually pretty nice, they have a different dish everyday and the usual stuff like toast jam and coffee. Showers and restrooms are spotless clean and proving you with soap shampoo conditioner and hairdryer. The atmosphere is quite and not very social.

We loved this hostel. The room we stayed in was very comfortable. They offered pillows of different firmness when arriving on our floor. While that sounds like a novelty, we loved it, and made for a nice nights sleep. The breakfast, while simple, was great, and the common areas were very comfortable to hang out in. The location is great as well, surrounded by great restaurants and cool shops. It was only a short walk to Gion, and generally easy to get around. We'd definitely go back.

Nicest hostel I've been too! Loved the Scandinavian / industrial feel of the place especial shared spaces... The kitchen/dining is my favorite with a wide counter holding the faucets and kitchenware and where breakfast and snacks are served. There were a lot of seating for both small and big groups and the seats were quite homey with wood-metal design. Staff is friendly and very accommodating. Last minute changes in our travel meant that some got left behind and they accommodated the price changes based on those who had shown up. They also sell the all day bus / train tickets and give you tips on how to maximize or when it's worth it to do it. There are Mac in the lobby free for use of guests. Rooms, linens, toiletries are all quite nice with option to add more pillows (you can even choose sizes and hardness) from a shared storage per floor and borrow slippers, both free of charge. They had a nice couch in our room with television and provision for hanging clothes. I would definitely come back! They are planning to renovate and build another area so I'm looking forward to that when I return to Osaka.

Awesome place to stay, definitely exceeded my expectations. A really nice hostel, I was impressed when I walked in at how modern and beautiful it looked. I stayed in a private room with two bunk beds, and everything was clean and the amenities were great. Lovely little breakfast in the mornings as well! Staff was always pleasant and helpful.

Excellent, rooms are a bit small, public space is very good. Full kitchen large publick hall to meet and hangout + outdoor fresh air. Very clean, guests keep it clean and in order. I will definitely shall come in my next trip to Kyoto.

This place was a solid choice but the vibe was a little different for a hostel. Felt more like a hotel and with the bar/cafe being closed there was no where to really meet other folks other than kitchen. Kitchen was amazing though- it had ALL the amenities and I mean ALL. Good value for location and room. It was clean and comfortable.

Really fantastic communal and kitchen areas with incredible design, super large, private and comfy beds (considering hostel standards and pricing). Showers are nice and big with GREAT pressure. Lots of groovy shops and cafes nearby. Thank you !!!

My favourite accommodation of the trip was this excellent modern hostel in a great area. The rooms were a little on the smaller side but with space to tuck away suitcases beneath the bed it did leave us with enough. Staff were friendly and very helpful, and allowed us to leave our luggage for 3 days whilst we made a short separate trip away before returning again. Would definitely recommend!

Really nice hostel. Our room was affordable and had a bathroom and a nice bed. There's a rooftop area to hang out as well. The whole place is kind of fancy. People were nice. Checkin at 4pm at earliest. Shower takes a sec to get hot. Easy 5/5 for me.

Most luxurious hostel hostel I've stayed in. It has everything. Definitely one of the best kitchens I've seen. A bit difficult to meet other travellers though because the place is so big

  • 3/5 Alan Miranda M. 10 months ago on Google
The double room we stayed in was damp and dark, as there is only a small gap between the hostel and the neighboring buildings, while the façade somehow has no windows. We often opened the window located in that gap to get fresh air, but there was a smell of cigarettes coming from underneath. Also, during our seven-day stay, we had only one scheduled cleaning, which the personnel forgot to do and we had to request again. The service was otherwise good, and, as for the location, I believe it is a bit far from public transport.
