Sitting at 160m above sea level, you’ll need medium fitness level to make it to the top. There are some parts of the walkway that are steep and don’t have railings or safety nets against the cliff edge so be careful especially when walking with children. We only saw a handful of young children and no prams so you’ll need to park them at the bottom. Once you get to the top, the view is nice but you can’t touch the monkeys. You can feed them sweet potato and peanuts from inside the cage whilst they roam freely outside.

One of the recommended destination when in Kyoto. Took the local train to Arashiyama and from the train station a relatively short walk to the Iwatayama Monkey Park entrance. The access cost is 600yen for adults, 300Yen for kids. From here there is a climb up to where the monkeys are, not very steep but quite long, about 30 minutes depending on your stamina. The uphill walk in itself is very nice, through the forest on gravel path with benches here and there. Once you reach the top you are rewarded with some unique experience, basically walking among snow monkeys. Generally they are not aggressive and mind their own business but if you stir them up might get into some troubles. Don't provoke them, don't tease them with food and act with common sense like around wild animals. There are monkey keepers on site and will promptly deal with occasional monkey brawls. There is a building where you became "caged" and where you can feed through metal bars the monkeys with food offered for a cost. Even there are rules not to touch the monkeys while feeding them, there are posters everywhere showing you how to properly and safely do it. I've seen people ignoring the posted rules and getting too close to the monkeys, nothing bad happened but still, as a precaution just follow the rules and you'll fully enjoy the experience. The site also offers some nice views of the surrounding areas but then again, monkeys are the main attraction.

GO! GO NOW GO TOMORROW JUST GO! I wasn't a fan of Kyoto until I went out to the Arashiyama area and the monkey park tacks the cake for the best thing I've done in Kyoto. If you are here for one day please come here over other tourist hot spots. While it is also touristy it gives you the aesthetic you are seeking do Kyoto river villages. The 20-minute hike up to the Monkeys was well worth every step. You experience the gorgeous forests and a tranquil environment with the request and ever-improving breathtaking view of the river bank. Once you reach the top you are greeted with over 30 monkeys of all ages roaming around. The only cage on site was the one they put the humans into so they could feed the monkeys without risk of injury. The view, the cute monkeys, and the nature are spectacular. I've been to many animal-related attractions in Japan and this was the only one that didn't leave me feeling melancholic about the animals' situation. They are truly free and well-kept. I will be back. Even in the rain because I would debate it make the experience even better.

This was a memorable experience. The hike was worth the view and the experience of getting to interact with the monkeys. There is a play ground for the Little’s to burn off extra energy if the home didn’t do that already. It has a slide and zip line. You can buy monkey food there and it’s not too expensive and they use the money to keep the place running. We visited in November and the weather was AWSOME!

One of the better things to do at Arashiyama and it is less crowded than the Bamboo forest. It is quite a hike uphill to the Monkey Park but I saw an elderly couple walking up slowly so you should be able to do so as well. The hike up is well worth the time and effort. You get a breathtaking view at the top, and the monkeys are fun to watch. I was surprised we could get so close to the monkeys. They are quite used to having people around, and will leave you alone as long as you obey the rules posted all over the park. You can buy peanuts to feed them. A fun place!

My visit to Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama 嵐山モンキーパークいわたやま was an awe-inspiring experience that offered a unique opportunity to observe monkeys in their natural habitat. Just a short 20-minute hike from the Arashiyama district, this hidden gem captivated me with its serene and picturesque surroundings. Reaching the top, I was immediately greeted by a small pond surrounded by curious monkeys. These adorable creatures appeared comfortable and at ease in their surroundings, going about their daily activities. Observing them interact with each other and playfully frolic around the pond was a truly enchanting sight. The park also offers a feeding area where visitors can purchase specially prepared food to feed the monkeys. It was a joy to watch as they approached and graciously accepted the treats from visitors, creating a unique connection between humans and animals.

We caught the train to Arashiyama train station and walked about 10 minutes. It was handy to have Google maps open to follow the walking directions there. Once we paid the entrance fee we walked approx 20 minutes up a steep pathway to the top of the mountain. It's a nice walk with plenty of shade. When you reach the top they have an air conditioned room if you want to sit for a little to cool down. The monkeys are free roaming and interesting to watch. They seem to be well cared for there. There are baby monkeys and older monkeys. The view of Kyoto from the top of the mountain is beautiful also. You can buy a small bag of food to feed them. They also have a monkey feeding show at specific times. Highly recommend coming here. It's a nice experience.

This place is very cute but somewhat small. Be advised that there is a 160m steep hike around 15 minutes before you get to the Monkey Park. Everyone was panting and heaving when we got to the top but it was definitely worth it! There is a playground for children and 2 rest stops with fans. You are able to feed the monkeys from inside a human cage. The view is also amazing and very instagrammable. I'll definitely be back, but maybe with a bottle of water!

Wow what an experience! It’s worth the effort. Just FYI it’s a climb. Many stairs to the top and some paved ramp areas that are a little slippery. But it’s worth the climb. Besides there are benches every 100 feet to take a breather. The monkey park itself is awesome. Monkeys roam freely around the park and visitors stay within a fairly wide roped off area to take pictures and stroll around. There also a shack within the bounds of the viewing area where you can enter, buy feed for a few hundred yen, and feed the monkeys through wire mesh. This is to prevent monkeys from swarming someone with food and it’s a safe system to get up close and personal. The monkeys are gentle and won’t aggressively grab the food - though the bigger ones will chase away the smaller monkeys from your food offerings. I highly recommend visiting and setting aside several hours for the experience. Bring your camera, hiking shoes, and remember it’s outdoors so prepare for full sun or rain.

🐒🐵🏞️🌳☁️ The monkeys are friendly and fun. Breathtaking vista of Kyoto. Be aware of the hike and wear good shoes. It is taxing during more humid times of the year.

(Translated by Google) 2016/8/21 It is often described that humans can enter the cage and see monkeys. Actually, the expression "cage" is a little different because you see monkeys from a hut with iron bars in the windows. It's a very enjoyable experience to see monkeys up close, but it's very tiring to get up from the foot of the mountain (near Togetsukyo) because it's on the mountain. I've been in business for over 50 years since I was a kid, but there are surprisingly many people who don't know that there is such a place in Arashiyama. It seems that foreign tourists know better than Japanese. In fact, the majority were foreigners.

To reach the top you need to walk or “hike” around 20-40 minutes depending on your fitness level. Wear comfortable shoes and get to the top to see the monkeys. You can feed the monkeys from the cabin, purchase the food for 100 yen, entrance ticket is 550 yen. Don’t forget to read and follow the rules (don’t stare at them, don’t get too close and don’t crouch), I’ve seen several tourist didn’t follow the rules and it could provoke the monkeys.

Glad we went here. Seeing how the monkeys interact was very enjoyable. There's a feeding area where you can buy food for them (100 yen for a small bag of peanuts or apples). The view from the top was also great. Don't skip out on this when you're in Arashiyama! It's walkable from the bamboo forest. You can have your baggage stored behind the ticketing counter upon entering the park.

I love this place! Visited many years ago as an exchange student, and returned many years later with my kids and equally had as much fun. The treck up the mountain is not super easy but as long as you enjoy walking, it’s not hard at all. The monkeys are relatively tame compared to ones you see in China apparently. We came just in time for feeding and they were relatively chill grabbing their chestnuts around us visitors. Once the feeding time finished, you could choose to purchase food for them in the hut for 100 yen a packet, which is very reasonably priced. Plenty of monkeys to come grab food from you while you’re inside the hut. They don’t look sad at all like you do at some animal cafes and while I went in winter, they looked happy to be there. There were also public toilets at the bottom of the park near the entrance and also public transport not far away too! Very convenient location.

Gorgeous 20 minute walk up stairs and switchback mild hiking, passing beautiful mossy rocks but don't worry, there are many benches where you can rest and enjoy the view. The roots and trees give you many photo ops, especially if it's raining. A macaque or two might walk past you as you walk up to the main feeding area. You have the option to pay 100¥ for peanuts or apples. There is an area with a cage you can place the food for the macaques to pick up and eat. Some may be calm, others may be aggressive, but most are so used to humans feeding them they just put their hands out for food, pop it in their mouths, and ask for more. The cage is not super well lit so expect your photos to be mostly cute, furry silhouette of monkeys. There's a wood stove for heat so if it's raining or snowing you'll be able to warm up. When you're done feeding, walk up the stairs behind the cage and enjoy the monkeys in trees, cuddling and grooming in the brush, or just taking a nap. They are really fun to observe so bring a camera or sketch book. Rules for not getting your beautiful face bitten: Don't feed them unless you're in the feeding zone, don't crouch down, don't keep sustained eye contact, keep 3 meters away if you can help it. Note: this is a lovely place to bring kids. It is NOT wheelchair or handicap accessible, I'm sorry.

First things first. Its a good 25min walk up a steep hill. Luckily for those that need a rest there is a seat every kw and then along the winding path. The reward at the top is a great experience. The monkey park is a unique experience with lots of monkeys or all ages running over the place. There is a feeding hut where you can feed the mnkeys food close up. There is also a fantastic view. Great family location and well worth the hike up and down. Its a lovely walk to get to the foot of the hill aswell across a couple of rivers with some stunning views.

It’s a good hike up the mountain. There are a lot of resting spaces on the trail. Monkeys are wandering around while you can take pictures and have a wonderful view of Kyoto. You can feed the monkeys on a secured area as well. There are simple rules to follow to not stress the monkeys and make it a safe space. Just follow those instructions and everything is fine.

Pretty forest, and lots of Japanese macaque monkeys, but some things just felt off. They are wild monkeys that are over fed and overweight. I felt bad for them. There’s a great view of the city at the top, which is a hike to get to. I preferred the park that’s across the river, next to the bamboo forest. The view of the rowboats from the nearby bridge was fantastic, and it’s a nice area of the city to spend a day. I just didn’t like the monkey park

To see those monkeys get ready to climb at least 30min, so better get ready with adapted shoes and physical conditions. When you reach the top the experience/view is really worth it. The monkeys are really adorable and not aggressive towards humans, you cannot touch them for their safety. There is an entrance fee (¥600/person). Snacks are sold at the top so you can feed the monkeys if you'd like which is quite fun (¥50/bag).

Worth the 20min hike to the top, it has amazing views. There are plenty of places to rest on your way up, children can also go up without any problems. In summer, do not think twice about bringing some water or buying from the vending machines in the park. Monkeys will be seen at the very top, there are none down. They get quite close and you can buy monkey food. It is a great experience.

A challenging yet rewarding 20-minute hike up the mountainside led us to the breathtaking view of Arama. The highlight was the chance to bond with around 120 wild monkeys, and the feeding spot added an extra touch of enchantment to the experience. The entrance fee costs ¥600 for adults and ¥300 for 4-15 years old. They also sell peanuts and apples for ¥100 per bag if you like to feed them. A rare and wonderful opportunity to experience the magic of these amazing creatures up close. Read all the warning signs to make sure you have a safe and enjoyable experience. You won't miss it, it's all over the trail and they got announcements over the speaker too.

I’ll say this. I didn’t expect the hike to be that steep or that long at the beginning. I thought it would be a light stroll into a gentle forest where cute monkeys awaits. The distance isn’t much but it’s pretty steep incline and consistently uphill walk. I almost quit halfway through kept asking people coming back from the top how far are the monkeys. Then I see a two year old walking down with her parents and I felt disappointed in myself. The view of the city is fantastic and the monkeys are so cute as promised. And the walk down is far more chilled out than the way up. I got the relaxing stroll I wanted enjoying the mountain forest like I wanted.

Amazing experience. I was not expecting to enjoy it that much, because monkeys are not my favorite. However, the hike along with the views and the whole experience made this well worth the visit. I actually enjoyed learning about the macaques here and watching them go about their lives in such a natural setting. The monkeys are free to come and go as they please - this is not a zoo. It's so much better! There are many benches to rest along the way, so it's appropriate for any fitness level. There are restrooms before the ascent and another at the top. There's even a cool playground at the top with a kid-friendly zipline and a slide that was very popular for photo ops.

It's a short hike to the dwelling place of the monkeys, the view of the forest along the path is truly amazing, especially if you're lucky enough to see one or two monkeys stray away from the pack whilst practicing the parkour-like moves along the precariously placed tree branches. At the top, the monkeys are quite calm and the view from atop the hill is also worth taking in.

We visited in October 2019. We traveled by train from Kyoto, got off at Arashiyama station. Walked to the Buddhist temple first, visited the garden and the unique bamboo forest. Then, crossed the river, had lunch and then visited the monkey park. It's a 25minutes hike, nice steep climb with views. You can spend about 45min watching the monkeys play around, doing their daily activities. Views from the top are very nice. I remember that you can buy peanuts and feed them. They seem friendly. Well worth visiting overall.

Fun experience getting to hangout with the monkeys. It’s a 100 yen to get food and give it to them. You have to do it in the building, not outside. It’s about a 20 minute hike up the mountain to get to the area, but that can be faster or slower depending! The view up there is also the best in Kyoto, you can see everything from up there!

Super fun! There are no barriers restricting where the monkeys can go, so they can get really close which is pretty surreal. One ran over my foot while being chased by another one. Definitely worth ¥100 per bag to feed them apples and peanuts, too. The view is incredible!

You need to be in somewhat good shape to hike up the mountain. It’s about a 20 minute hike up but it’s worth it. There are benches and rest stops during the hike to relax a little. The view at the top is amazing and the little monkeys are ADORABLE. For 100 yen you’re able to get a little bag of peanuts or apples and feed the monkeys. Staff is on site to the remind visitors not to get too close and they’re constantly cleaning the site. One of my favorite visits in Japan.

Pretty original and cheap activity. It's a good 20 minute climb to the top where the monkeys are. The place itself is pretty small but there's a good amount of monkeys to take pictures of. Just have to make sure to respect the rules for your safety. When I heard about this place, I was really excited to see it. But once there, I felt like it was a bit underwhelming. I still had fun joking around and taking pictures of the animals. You can pay extra to go feed the monkeys and have a different angle to take pictures which can be interesting. I highly recommend to bring snacks and water in your bag if you plan on going there since as I said, it is a pretty good walk all the way to the top. Might be hard for some people. Finally, you also get a nice view of Kyoto from far away.

I absolutely loved visiting this spot. It’s a steep hike up, but well worth it. There is a small entry fee, again, worth every yen 😌 It was so nice to see the monkeys not confined to cages. They seem to do what they want up there, and are not afraid of the humans. A great sign. We watched monkeys groom and ‘monkey around’ with each other 🙈🙊🙊. I could watch them for hours. There’s a caged area to enter, and feed the monkeys through the fence. Monkeys are on the outside and hang around for the food. Peanuts and apple was on option for 50Y. A small price to pay to feed these beautiful, smart animals. The view from up there is also amazing! Can see the whole of Kyoto with backdrop of mountains. Thanks for having us 🙏

The place was pretty cool! However, the hike was rough. There are a ton of areas to rest but the 20 minutes that they advertised that it would take to go up was a complete lie. Unless you’re a pro hiker, please bring a portable fan, light clothes and shoes, water, and some willpower. Once at the top of the hill, you can buy food for the monkeys for 50¥ and water for yourself for 130¥. Please use caution and stay hydrated on the hike. It’s rough but worth it.

I highly recommend this monkey park when in Kyoto. A few things to note however: 1) it takes approx. 20 minutes to climb the mountain UPHILL! 2) you should wear good shoes to support you while you walk up the unpaved / uneven terrain. 3) take water bottles from the vending machines at the base (they also sell them at the top). It costs 600 YEN to enter and 50 YEN if you want to feed the monkeys.

This is a popular attraction in the Arashiyama. It's known for its wild Japanese macaques, which roam freely in a natural habitat. You can observe and interact with the monkeys while enjoying panoramic views of Kyoto from the park's mountaintop location. It's a unique and enjoyable experience for animal lovers and those seeking breathtaking scenery in a tranquil setting. *The monkeys tend to be more active in the morning, so consider arriving early to see them at their liveliest. *Do not touch the monkeys, even if they approach you. *The entrance fee is typically paid in cash

I've never experienced an open park with wild animals so this was an exciting opportunity. The hike to the top of the mountain can be rough and about a 20 minute walk but the monkeys were adorable and it was worth the steep walk. It is advised not to look at them in the eyes or squat but they are familiar with humans so they act naturally and sometimes sit next to you. I wished I could hold them but feeding them was pretty fun. It costs about 600 yen to enter on a weekend and 100 yen for a food pack to feed them which is pretty cheap. I recommend this park and the amazing views.

Entrance fee: 600 yen per adult Hike: 20 min, some steep areas/ stairs, not too difficult, would say it’s a medium level hike (we’re not hikers). Does get slippery in some areas, use caution. Snow doesn’t stop the monkeys, they seem to enjoy it. Once you’re at the top, you can enter the feeding cage and buy feeding treats for 100 yen. Highly recommend. Monkeys are not aggressive, staff are friendly.

Fun little hike! Most of the climb is in a well shaded canyon making the hottest day a little cooler. There are gorgeous views of the Kyoto area from the top in addition to the monkeys. The park is well maintained with plenty of staff present. The monkeys wander openly. There is a structure to enter if you would like to feed the monkeys. Would highly recommend. It's a bit of a hike, but not bad. Much less crowded than the other well known sites in Kyoto.

Get here early and beat the crowds. It opens at 9am and is 550 yen per adult, 250 per child. The hike takes about 20 min and is a steep stair case most of the way. It was very rewarding at the top, plenty of monkeys wandering around. Perfectly safe for families as long as you follow the rules. You can feed the monkeys for $100 yen from inside the building. Also you have spectacular views of Kyoto from the top.

(Translated by Google) It takes about 20 minutes and you can see many monkeys and panoramic Kyoto scenery. A fence? Something like that does not let people fall, monkeys are free. I have not seen monkeys trying to attack people, but they are fighting a lot; Arashiyama is recommended to see if you want to come and do not have anything. Depressed in the summer. It seems to be fattening. Even so, monkeys are relaxing on the mountaintop. You can feed from inside the hut (because the monkeys are waiting for food), so you can enjoy it with children. We recommend that you take measures against the cold again (hot drinks, body warmers, etc.). (Translated by Google) 20 minutes hike on the mountain road. We recommend that you wear shoes that are suitable for it. Since it is on the mountain, you can see the city. The monkey also knows that this will not do any harm, so he will come closer. Food is given only through the net in the break room, but it is cute with some small monkeys. If you think that it is because the other person gave it by hand, be careful because it is a method to put it on the board and ask for it. Since the days are short in autumn and winter, it is until 16:00, but it seems that the park will be closed when the monkeys return to the mountains. Good for kods you can see wild monkeys and can feed them by 100Yen. However you have to climb mountain about 30 min to arrive close to monkeys. If you plan to go consider 1-2hours from entrance to return.

This place is really a great little adventure. It's not much of a hike about 600m or so and mostly stairs so the whole family can make it. The monkeys were adorable and the staff makes sure the humans don't get hurt or do anything to irritate the monkeys as they are free to roam the mountain side. They have a sheltered area for people to go in when feeding the monkeys so that there is a safe barrier. There's also a beautiful view of Kyoto from the monkey park area.

One of the coolest places I've visited. The hike to the top can take anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes depending on your pace. There is a room almost at the top where you can cool down with a bit of AC if you go when it is hot. Once you reach the top, Monkeys are just Everywhere. They run and play all over the mountain top. You can also feed them Apple pieces or Peanuts (sold for ¥200 inside the feeding room) Feeding them was so cool and they aren't shy about asking for food either.

Don’t look the monkeys in the eyes (or so they say)!! The best thing for me was the view from the top - which is absolutely worth the trek up. You can see the entire city, chill with the monkeys and take in the views.

Such a lovely place!! The monkeys are free and everywhere, which is super nice! If you like to take animal photos, that's a great place! Just remember you have 20min walking up, it's not hard to get there, but if you're exhausted, try another day. Also, the view from there is beautiful!! You can see the whole Kyoto!

Having visited Arashiyama a few times in the past, it was my first time visiting this park. A mild hike up and you are amongst some cute monkeys. A great way to spend an hour for a modest fee. It is hot in the summer so remember to bring enough fluids!

We had a great time visiting the monkey park. The walk from the entrance to the rest area is a little steep, but not too bad. We finished it in about 13 minutes. At the top you can go into a building that has wire grating and feed the monkeys with food peanuts and apples you can purchase there. The monkeys are just roaming around, and you could easily walk into one if you're not paying attention. It was a lot of fun and definitely a must do if you're in the Arashiyama area.

It was a fun experience and the monkeys appeared to be well behaved and well cared for. The park is situated on top of a small mountain and requires about a 20 minute walk up so I would not recommend scheduling it after having already had a long day of walking or during a hot day.

You have to walk at least 20min (with brakes 30min) up the mountain which in a Summer day really can be to much for some people, I wouldn't recommend the hike for kids. The monkeys itself are mostly peaceful.

Fun monkey park which is well taken care of but I think in the ¥600 should include some monkey food, because it is a bit steep without it. Monkey food (Apples or Peanuts) are ¥50 each and you can only feed the monkeys from inside a house with bars (like a feeding room) which is good as the monkeys do not try and steal from you outside of it, and they are actually very calm when taking food. Next to the feeding room is a outlook point with a beautiful view, and a huge banana you can take pictures with. The walk is approximately 20 minutes up the mountain with shade from the trees and some seating areas with fans along the way, very do-able for anyone. Would recommend doing it once!

This place is only ¥600 (£3) to get in which is very chimp. It's about a 15/20 minute walk up to see the monkeys. When up there, you're able to mingle with the macaques and head into another room where you can feed them bananas, apples or peanuts from behind a gate (¥50/30p). We had a great time although it was 35 degrees when we were there. A brilliant place to head to with your wife or your prime-mates.

It's quite a hike to reach the top, if you're lucky, you'll be able to see few monkeys along the way. There are benches for you to rest on the top while admiring the views and be surrounded by monkeys. As long as you didn't scare/disturb the monkeys, they are quite calm and comfortable. The area on the tops is not really that large, you spend more time in hiking than observing the monkeys. Still worth a visit though

Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama is an experience worth visiting in Kyoto. You will need to scale up a trail to get there but it is a must especially if you are intending to visit the Bamboo Grove. If you follow the strict rules you will have a great time just make sure you don't take out any snacks or crouch down to the monkeys level as they will try to snatch food or your phones or cameras. As a bonus you will also get a great view of Kyoto!

A very special park where macaque monkeys live naturally and we are just visiting their "home". On Top of hill, with a panoramic view of Kyoto, There is a cage that people enter and you can buy a bag with peanuts or fruit that the staff prepares for the monkeys and you can feed the monkeys (50 yen). The cage was designed to keep the people from being attacked by monkeys. Getting to the Top, the cage area and the living area involves about 30 minute hike, along the way up there is information about the reserve and the monkeys. Just before the top, there is a small playground for children (slide, omega and swing). It is highly recommended!

I went to visit the Monkey Park in Arashiyama in January and it was the most wonderful experience I had there. I highly recommend to wear good comfortable sneakers as you will be hiking up the stairs and hill just to get to the park where the Macaques are. It took a good 20-25 mins hike but totally worth it. Once you reach the top, you have the most amazing view of nature and the town. The Macaques roam freely and if you want to feed them, there is a small ground floor building that you go inside and pay 100 yen for a small bag of food. Your choices are chestnuts, peanuts, or pieces of apples. You can only feed the Macaques inside as they have window guards everywhere. I highly recommend this place to visit.

The hike up is killer but the monkeys running around everywhere once you get to the top is so worth it. There is a little shop too where you can buy food for the monkeys and feed them through the wire. It was an up close view point that was so much fun. The views from the top were breathtaking. The monkeys were fed by the care takers while there and it was so cool to see baby monkeys, juveniles and adult monkeys running in to get some snacks.

Awesome park! Who doesn't like monkyes? This place is more of a hiking trail and then monkey monastery at the top. The monkeys don't seem to be kept in the park at all and they are completely free to roam around and go wherever they like. Make sure to listen to the guidance about how to act around them and be careful with young children as the monkeys can walk right up to you and them. I highly recommend this attraction while visiting Kyoto and Arashiyama area as a whole.

It's quite a hike up the mountain. Get ready to be sweaty. Once up the hill the view of the city is amazing and worthwhile! The monkeys are cute and you see a ton of them. Highly recommend! The ticket was 600¥ per adult. We got there in the morning and there weren't too many people. When we left it started to get a bit crowded, so if you want more monkeys than people I suggest you get there early.

Well organised wonderful park with a beautiful forest, good playground and lots of cute monkeys. The climb is something to take into account but there are enough rests, fun trivia and cooling moments along the way. They are very service minded and I love the idea of putting the people in the cage instead of the animals. Great place for kids and it's so nice they're not too charge much more than they do.

We went here in April 2019. This place was absolutely worth the trip from Tokyo! We took the train and then walked to this place, a little far but not bad at all and there's so much to see on the way. This place is super affordable and after you pay you have to hike to the top, it was a little steep but we just took our time. Once you're at the top you can hang out outside by the monkeys or you can go inside the hut where you can pay a reasonable price to feed the monkeys from inside the hut. They will jump on the fenced windows of the hut and grab food from you, many of them sit there waiting with their arms sticking through the fence. There are people outside who monitor the monkeys and make sure people follow the rules (like not squatting down to the monkeys level to avoid making the monkeys feel threatened). The view is also spectacular from the top! Highly recommend this place, such a fun and unique outting.

The entrance is a bit tricky to find. From Hankyu Arashiyama Station, go straight and turn left just before the river, follow the street along the river, turn right at the intersection, walk further a bit and there will be a big Arashiyama Monkey Park sign on the left. Tickets cost 550 JPY for adults and 250 JPY for children (4 years old and up). It takes 15-20 minutes by walking from the entrance to the monkey hut at the top. The route isn't steep and relatively easy (our 6 and 3 years old had no problems walking all the way up). The ticket booth sell some souvenirs, umbrella (350 JPY), and raincoat (100 JPY). There are vending machines and some benches at the starting point and other benches on the way up. When you almost reach the top, there is a playground and an air-conditioned resting place. Just a bit up further, you will finally see the macaque on their pretty green hills. The view is great, staff is so friendly (they asked if we would like to see the macaque during feeding time), the macaque are pretty cool (not aggressive). There's a hut where you could buy cold drinks for yourself and some peanut/apples for the macaque. Even though the place isn't big but it's a great place to spend 1-2 hours away from the bustling downtown Arashiyama.

This park is easy to get to and a short walk from the train station. The walk up to the top takes about 20 minutes and there are plenty of places to rest if you need to catch your breath. There are plenty of warning signs regarding the monkeys themselves (do not, for any reason look the monkeys in the eyes!!!) But they are actually quite tame if you follow the rules. The view from the top is gorgeous and you can see Kyoto in all it's entirety on a clear day. There is an opportunity to feed the monkeys, behind caged walls, when you get there. Bags of food only cost 50 yen. Watching the baby monkeys wrestle was a highlight for sure!

It's a unique trek to the top of the mountain, takes 20 minutes and is fairly challenging. At the top is a very nice view of the city below. And of course there are monkeys to see, which are great and quite calm with so many tourists - but you should still follow the rules of the park.

Such a cool, and surprisingly affordable experience. You start by having to hike up to the top of the hill which starts out daunting but gets easier the farther you make it up. There are plenty of rest areas along the way where you can sit down and drink your water. They warned us before we started, but in case they don’t mention it you should definitely buy yourself a bottle of water if it is a hot day. Once up to the top there is a gorgeous view overlooking city and a bunch of monkeys running around! You can go inside the building and pay a small fee to get a bag of food to feed the monkeys. There are a couple of bully monkeys so beware who you’re feeding…

Not super long of a hike if you are up for a 30 min uphill challenge. Not for those that have wheelchairs or strollers. There doesn’t seem to be a ramp from the bottom to top of the hill. The monkeys don’t seem aggressive and you can purchase food from the shelter and feed them from the inside. They have trainers walking around to keep an eye on them. They smell is a bit strong from urine and feces but it’s natural. The view is also worth the hike. Pretty and breathtaking.

  • 5/5 Bret Z. 9 months ago on Google
What is better than hanging with monkeys in their natural habitat! This is a must do when visiting Kyoto. The hike up to the top isn't that bad. Takes about 15 minutes and 1500 steps. It is well worth the amazing view of Kyoto in its entirety. If you want to feed the monkeys you need to buy the food there. Do not attempt to bring your own food. You feed the monkeys inside the human cage so it is a very safe and secure experience. A lot of monkeys will sit around and pose so there will be plenty of selfie opportunities but just do not get that close to them. They can be aggressive if they feel invaded or provoked. But don't worry if you keep to yourself so will the monkeys. There is also staff there to keep the monkeys in check in case they get riled up. If you have kids this would be a great experience for them. When you are done visiting monkey park there is a lot of shopping and food places all within walking distance so you can definitely make a half a day out of it. Overall it was a great experience and well worth the nominal entrance fee which was 600 Yen per adult at the time of this review.

Really cool experience in my opinion. There's about a 120 monkeys at the top of the mountain and they're going about their business in the open, not afraid to be right next to humans. While you shouldn't pet them and generally keep a bit of distance, it's a lot of fun to just watch them. It's 600¥ for entrance to the park, and you can buy snacks to feed them from inside a cage (for safety reasons) as well. There's also a nice view to be had from the top of the mountain. Do note that it's a bit of a steep hike up there, so prepare to sweat. The staff are super friendly and happy to answer any questions about the monkeys, they can also speak English decently. I learned that they even know all 120 of the monkeys by name and can tell them apart.

  • 5/5 Brandon H. 9 months ago on Google
This is the place to see monkeys in their natural habitats. The hike up really isn’t that bad since you’re always in the shade. Once you’re at the top, you have a nice view of Kyoto. The monkeys will be walking around everywhere and are not agressive unless provoked. It’s overall a very nice experience.

Great experience. There are a lot of monkeys to watch. Some are very active, and some with babies, There is a building where you can buy fruit and peanuts to feed them. Bit of an uphill walk on a paved path. Took our time and sat at most of the convenient rest areas. Well worth the effort. Took about an hour going up. It's much easier and faster walking down. If you're in good shape, and we are not, lol, it's about a 30-minute climb.

It's a bit of an uphill walk to get there, 600 yen for entrance fee per adult ($300 for kids I think). The uphill is a bit steep, but just take your time going up, there's a few benches along the way you can use to rest up. At the top of the mountain, you can buy small snacks to feed the monkey. The staff (and signs) all will ask you to stay inside the house (enclosed with mesh fencing where you can feed the monkeys safely). Once at the top, you can get a nice bird's eye view of the town!

There is a lot of walking you need to do before you reach the top where the monkeys are. Even before you enter and pay, there are already a lot of stairs, steep ones, and that is just the start. If your knees are not in good shape this attraction is not for you. After you pay, another set of steep stairs you need to climb. They say its a 20 minutes climb, it's most likely not. The hike is steep, no strollers can handle it and there are benches along the way you can rest. 5 mins before you reach the top there is a cooling area/building that has AC and fans and you can rest for a while. There is a playground for kids too with little zipline, see-saw, swing and slides, that my kids enjoyed more than the monkeys. The view from the top was breathtaking, that's the one thing I enjoyed. When you are outside you can see the monkeys everywhere, like on the trees and the ground but you are not allowed to touch them. You can feed them from inside the building but you have to pay for the fruits or nuts. When you feed them, you need to drop the food on the window sill and not hand it to the monkeys. There are little monkeys too that are cute.

Very much worth it. It's takes about 20 minutes to get to the top. It's not very steep. The top is filled with monkeys, including very cute little baby monkeys. There is a shed on the top where for little money you can buy pindas to feed the monkeys. The kids loved it. We too. Also a beautiful view over Kyoto.

It is a long hike up to see the monkeys but it is well worth it. The hike itself isn't strenuous. Once up there, you can pay a small amount to feed the monkeys from within a caged off space. There is also water for sale up there in case you didn't bring any.

Worth the hike - even in the summer heat. Great views of Kyoto and the monkeys are adorable. Best to come before 11am as the monkeys are most interactive then and babies are out too.

Worth the hike up the mountain. It’s about 20min climb up to the top of the mountain, but added with the extreme heat & humidity the day we went, it was a bit difficult. Some areas are steeper than others, alternates between sloped surface to steps. There’s a few benches to rest along the way, shaded areas, but with the heat and the mosquitoes (I was bit quite a lot on the way up and down), probably best to get to the top as quickly as possible. There’s a ‘air conditioned area’ to rest near the end of the route, but I’m not sure if the a/c was running, it was that hot. Still, worth the treck up to look at the monkeys. 50yen for some peanuts or apples that you feed within an enclosed area. This is a good way to do it, and the monkeys are polite and gentle as they wait and reach out for the food. Very good view from the top of the mountain too- you can see Kyoto tower from here.

Not expensive. Tickets pay in cash! The climb was very hard! But , if you like monkeys, it's totally worth it! We came for the opening, so not too many people were there and not too hot. Later, when we were going down, a lot of people were climbing the mountain!

The journey up the mountain is beautiful and a nice little adventure. At the end you get to see cute monkeys, as long as u get lucky with the fellow tourists. People are very focused on getting their moneys worth of pics and videos so that could be slightly annoying but the cute monkeys are undeniable.

My god, this is the most wonderful place in the world!! The walk towards the top of the hill, where the monkeys reside, is a bit long and steep - but boy does it build up the anticipation and it is absolutely, 100% worth the effort!! These are the most adorable and respectful monkeys I have ever witnessed (to be honest I haven’t seen many but still), I could spend days just watching them do their daily chores :D We had a monkey giving a spa treatment to assume his wife, we had a baby monkey doing parkours, we had a child monkey who got lost and kept calling his mama who was only a few steps away, this is entertainment like you have never seen before

A monkey lovers dream. Beautiful 20 min hike up a forested mountain to find a controlled peak area full of Japanese macaque monkeys! 600 jpy per entrance ticket. They're completely unafraid of humans but also don't aggressively approach. You can just watch them do their monkey business from a safe and often super close distance.

Came here on a Saturday morning just before 9am. There was a queue to buy tickets but it moved quite quickly. Remember to being cash to pay for the ticket (600¥ for adult admission) as card payment is not accepted. The walk up to see the monkeys is around 20 minutes up hill and 15 minutes downhill. Fruit and peanuts are available to purchase (50¥ per bag) and 1 bag of food per person can only be purchased. I had a great experience and would recommend this as a to do activity in Kyoto !

The walk up to the park is about 20 minutes. On top - beside the monkeys - you enjoy a nice view over whole Kyoto. If you want to feed the monkeys, you can do it from within a small house and through the windows. Overall monkeys live peace and nature. The staff also pays attention that they can live like this.

Not for everyone. It's a 20 minute hike up a steep hill. The monkeys are interesting to watch. They spend most of the time grooming each other. It was mating season so they were pretty active. It's nice to see them free to roam.

A monkey park located in Arashiyama area. Easy to access after your visit for the bamboo forest and teryuji temple. Requires an entrance fee. Be aware the hiking trails will be a bit tiring and whole journey easily range from 20-30min. Monkeys are free to roam along the hill so you might get a chance to see them while hiking. At the summit there's a viewing platform where you can feed the monkey. Overall experience is nice.

Well worth the walk up the hill to see the monkeys. Hill is a bit steep, however there are a number of seats along the way. Despite the large number of tourists in the surrounding areas, the top of the hill was quite a large space and felt a lot less crowded than some of the neighbouring attractions.
