The Badami cave temples are a complex of three Hindu and one Jain temple from the 6th century. These are rock-cut cave architecture, the earliest of its kind in the Deccan. The beautiful carvings are a sight to see, the best part is they are still very well preserved. They are full of tales on different avatars of Shiva and Vishnu. A visit will take anywhere between 1-2 hrs. The climb is full of monkeys so keep your belonging secured.

I have visited many times, this was my third visit to Badami caves. Best time is the sunset at the second cave. If you are nearby must visit during raining 🌧️. The pond looks too good during sunset and a museum is available. Top hill and monkeys naughty captures.

An absolutely special experience while visiting this historic site at Badami during my recent solo motorcycle ride to Karnataka. It was extremely crowded that day as it was the Sankranti weekend so it wasn't the best of the experiences, especially with all the school kids shouting! But overall it was a fabulous experience marvelling at all that history and beauty created by the Chalukyas thousands of years back! A must visit site for anyone interested in knowing more about our glorious history. 100% recommended.

This is the second temple which is inline alone a set of four cave temples carved a rock mountain in an elevation. Dedicated to Vishnu. Impressive and gigantic. You can’t imagine how hard it would be to come up such carvings in a rock and the result looking absolutely stunning and astonishing. I would like to be transported to the times these cave temples were being carved. Such a wonderful place.

Four caves are carved in a hill. Approx 180-200 steps to be climbed but not at a stretch. You get breaks to rest in between. Monkeys are in large numbers and it's a big issue. They snatch purses and bags. So avoid carrying anything. Try to keep everything in your pocket. In the Caves there's a peculiar unbearable smell due to bats. But the caves are worth a visit for the huge statues and intricate carvings. A guide is a must. 6am-6 pm is the timing. This site has hills on two sides and the other two sides are covered by hutments. The archeology department should rehabilitate these settlements. The bhuteshwar temple is a beautiful site. Overall a must visit place for sure.

The best place I have visited Badami Chalukyas was founded in AD 540 by Pulakeshin I (AD 535–566), an early ruler of the Chalukyas is generally regarded as the founder of the Early Chalukya line. In the Mahabharata, sage Agastya is described in the epic as a sage with enormous powers of ingestion and digestion. To kill men, asura Vatapi used to become a goat and his brother Ilvala would cook him. Then, Vatapi would recollect in the stomach and tear himself out from the inside of the victim, killing the victim. When Agastya arrives, Ilvala offers the goat again. He kills Vatapi by digesting the meal as soon as he ate, giving Vatapi no time to self organize. Agastya, in the legends of Mahabharata, kills the demons Vatapi and Ilvala much the same mythical way as in the Ramayana.

Badami rock cut cave temples are very ancient and amazing caves. There are four caves and three out of the four are dedicated to Siva and Fourth cave is dedicated to Buddha. There is an entry ticket of twenty rupees. We have to scan QR code at the entrance to enter. Please note that cash is no longer accepted for entrance fee. The temple is monitored by security and it is a safe place. Most of the time it will be crowded and expect a big crowd on the weekend. There are stairs to climb and expect a easy to moderate trek to fully explore all the caves. An amazing and wonderful place. A must visit tourist destination in Badami.

The place is beautiful with all the caves around. It's nice to see the view from the top cave. Suggest you to go early as it's takes time to see all the caves and also the temple is near which needs another way to go there. So best to plan well before you visit.

Stunning sculptures...a must visit place for those who love history and architecture. I had been during monsoon time and no big crowd. If you are lucky with rains not chasing you, monsoon season is the best season to go around badami. The campus is well maintained by ASI. The 4 caves are ascending one over the other and may not suit eldersad people difficulty in Climbing steps.

Beautiful beautiful place! It is even prettier at sunrise and sunset! The architecture is quite awe inspiring. The only issue is with the abundance of monkeys attacking the visitors and grabbing things. Having a pole or stick to shoo them away is recommended.

It is famous for its rock cut monuments such as the Badami cave temples, as well as the structural temples such as the Bhutanatha temples, Badami Shivalaya and Jambulingesvara temple. It is located in a ravine at the foot of a rugged, red sandstone outcrop that surrounds Agastya lake.

Cave - 2 has Vaishnavite influence with panels of Trivikrama & Bhuvaraha. The largest relief in Cave 2 depicts the legend of Vishnu in his Trivikrama form, taking one of the three steps. Below the raised step is a frieze showing the legend of Vamana dwarf avatar of Vishnu, before he morphs into the Trivikrama form. Another major relief shows the legend of Vishnu in his Varaha (a boar) avatar rescuing goddess earth (Bhudevi) from the depths of cosmic ocean, with a penitent multi-headed snake (Nāga) below. On the ceilings are carvings of Anantasayana, Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva & other Ashtadikpalas.

A real heritage site. These cave temples were built by Chalukyas and must see sight. There are four caves and some temples around the campus. Steps to the cave are a little high and you have to be careful with monkeys. Do not carry any eatables or water bottles in your hands as the monkeys will try to grab it. Its recommended to hire a guide as you will get some valuable information.

The caves are marvelous. Taking the fact that they are from 5th century, it is amazing how they were even carved. Just to touch the carvings gives goosebumps how minutely were the artists that time did the job. 2 and 3 cave stinks a lot, so much so that you might just puke. So try to take face mask so you can enjoy it a bit better. Beware of monkeys, they tend to take water bottles and food items from hand. They pull. Mobiles and wallets, they are not interested.

Fascinating dive into the history of Dravidian architecture and beginning of cave temples in southern India. The carvings on the caves are breathtaking and very ornate. Only 4 caves are open to public and can be covered in 30 mins or so. Please wear walking shoes as they're are steps to be climbed and best time to visit is between 9-11am when the sun is shinning on the caves.

Cave temple-3 is dedicated to Vishnu and contains related reliefs on his "Avatar" ( incarnations ) Period - 578 CE commissioned by Chalukya Pulakeshin-1 and completed by his son Mangales

Once you're done with the main temples, walk to the other side of the water tank below. There's a path along the water tank. You can actually walk across on the tank steps. It's another long climb to the top on the other side. There are no caves here but the remains of a few temples, cannons, pillars and lookout posts. Its amazing what these people accomplished without the technology we have at our disposal today.

Cave 2 is above and to the east of Cave 1 and faces north. It was created in late 6th or early 7th century. It is smaller than Cave 1, somewhat similar in terms of its floor plan, but it is dedicated primarily to Vishnu.Cave 2 is reached by climbing 64 steps from the first cave. The cave entrance is a verandah divided by four square pillars with ends as half pillars, all carved out of the monolithic stone face. The pillars have decorative carvings with frieze of ganas (mythical dwarfs) with various facial expressions. On the two sides of the entrance are standing dvarapalas (guardians) holding flowers, not weapons.Like Cave 1, Cave 2 art reflects Hindu theology and arts. The largest relief in Cave 2 depicts the legend of Vishnu in his Trivikrama form, taking one of the three steps. Below the raised step is a frieze showing the legend of Vamana dwarf avatar of Vishnu, before he morphs into the Trivikrama form.Another major relief shows the legend of Vishnu in his Varaha (a boar) avatar rescuing goddess earth (Bhudevi) from the depths of cosmic ocean, with a penitent multi-headed snake (Nāga) below.Like other major murti (statue) in this and other Badami caves, the Varaha artwork is set in a circle and symmetrically laid out; according to Alice Boner, the panel is an upright rectangle whose "height is equal to the octopartite directing circle and sides are aligned to essential geometric ratios, in this case to the second vertical chord of the circle".The walls and ceiling have traces of colored paint, suggesting the cave used to have fresco paintings. Inside the temple are friezes showing stories from Hindu texts such as the Bhagavata Purana. These show the legend of cosmic ocean churning (Samudra Manthan) and Krishna's birth and flute playing indicating the theological and cultural significance of these in 7th century India. The ceiling and door head carvings show Gajalakshmi, the swastika symbols, flying couples, Brahma, Vishnu asleep on Shesha and others. The ceiling of Cave 2 shows a wheel with sixteen fish spokes in a square frame. The end bays have a flying couple and Vishnu on Garuda. The main hall in the cave is 33.33 feet (10.16 m) wide, 23.583 feet (7.188 m) deep, and 11.33 feet (3.45 m) high and is supported by eight square pillars in two rows. The roof of this hall has panels filled with bas-relief carvings.[35] The sculptures of Cave 2, like Cave 1, are of the northern Deccan style of the 6th and 7th century similar to that found in Ellora caves.

(Translated by Google) The Badami Cave Temples are a complex of four Hindu, Jain and possibly Buddhist cave temples located in the town of Badami in the Bagalkote district of northern Karnataka. These caves are considered as an example of Indian rock cut architecture, especially the Badami Chalukya architecture dating back to the 6th century. Badami was formerly known as the capital of the Chalukya Dynasty, Vatapi Badami, which ruled much of Karnataka from the 6th to the 8th century. The almond stone walls are located on the west bank of the man's lake surrounded by a mud wall; It is surrounded by fortifications built in the north and south. Badami Cave Temples Vishnu movie in Badami cave 3 The Badami Cave Temples represent some of the earliest examples of Hindu temples in the Deccan region. With the temples of Aihole they converted the valley of Malaprabha into a cradle of temple architecture that later influenced other temples of Hindus. There are 1 to 4 caves in the hill escort in the form of soft almond sandstone from town to south-east. In cave 1, in various sculptures of Hindu deities and themes, the main carvings are the Tandava-dance Shiva Nataraja. Cave 2 is often cave 1, similar to its design and dimensions, including Hindu citizens, in which the statue of Vishnu is bigger than trivikramas. The big cave is Cave 3, which contains Vishnu-related mythology, which is the most intricately carved cave in the complex. Cave 4 is dedicated to the revered people of Jainism. Around the lake, the almond has extra caves, like a cave. Another cave, with about four meters (1,600 feet) in four caves, has 27 Hindu carvings in 2015. Badami Cave Temples are located in the town of Badami in the north-central part of Karnataka, India. Temples are 88 miles (142 km) east of Belgaum (IATA code: IXT) and 87 miles (140 km) northwest of Hampi Northwest. The Malaprabha River is 3 miles (4.8 km) away. Cave Temples are located 22 miles (35 km) from Pattadakal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and 14 miles (23 km) from Aihole - a hundred ancient and medieval Hindus, Jain and Buddhist monuments In the 6th century Chalukya dynasty capital historical texts, the Badami, also known as Vatapi, Vatapinapura, Vatapinagari and Agastya Tirtha, is located at the departure point between two steep mountain cliffs. The four cave temples that are surrounded by a hill to the southeast of the town are carved into the rocky monolithic stone face. The Escarment Agast Lake is a man-made lake that was created by a mud dam faced with stone steps. At the western end of the rock, at its lowest point, is the first cave temple. [4] [5] Further to the east of the hill is the Cave 3 cave to the east. [6] The fourth cave, Cave 4, has some steps to the east. When you visit Hampi make sure you spend a day to go to Badami. I was taken aback with the work of our ancient people. It's mesmerizing to see the intricate works. Nature at its best, one the best location where you sit and get lost in your thoughts. You would love being here and doing nothing but just getting some self reflection done. A must visit place in lifetime.

The main Badami Cave has 4 different temples carved out within the mountain and are truly fascinating. Below the cave is a man made 1400 yesr old lake, Agasthya Lake. Also on the opposite side there are some monuments and a museum too. I do recommend a Guide who can explain everything as they might look mere pieces of rock but are really interesting and informative.

The place is very good but the staff here are very bad. Even the ASI staff are very bad. The entry bar code scanner developed by ASI is removed from here by the staff ,so that all have to pay 5₹ extra. These 5₹ were will be in the pocket these staffs. Also they put a parking fee board here but we have to pay extra. When I asked about that to the staff they were shouted at me. How come ASI has these kind bad staff. These kind of people will ruin beautiful places like this.

Ancient monument .. Kindly visit you will get the supper experience and you can find the monolithic 4 cave temples in a row. Infront of those cave temples you find one kalyani which is so beautiful to see and relax. Other temples opposite side of the kalyani those are so beautiful don't miss to visit these temples also, next to the temples one narrow path is available to climb the opposite hill to the Cave temple hill.... which gives you the Bird view of the city as well as cave temple and it gives you pleasant experience. And after this don't forget to visit Famous Banashankari Devi Temple it is Just 5Km Apart from the Main cave temple.

worth visit this place, ancient history, caves main attraction.however, 2 ways to enter to this Destination. For the Caves to see , easy road and ample parking space. But if you want to see museum then it's other way which are very narrow road. Somehow we managed and reached at the entrance and able to park. So try to park your vehicle on cave side and from there you see whole campus which is very big.

Sheer Brilliance what comes to your mind when you visit the Badami cave temples. The 3 Hindu and 1 Jain temples are architected by cutting into rocks. The carvings are exquisite. The place is maintained neatly. People need to ensure they don't litter here. The surroundings are so picturesque. Despite the damage done, it still stands and wow's the visitors. Take your time in going around the monuments and, if possible, hire a guide who can tell you details of the place and its historical significance. Try not to carry any bags while you trek up as the monkeys are very active and could try to snatch. They are in plenty here, so be on the lookout. They never troubled us as we just had our phones in our hands for pictures. Enjoy your visit to Badami and soak in the history of the earlier golden era and their marvellous creation, Badami.

Famous archaeological site to visit. Well maintained by ASI. Good place for photography. Relax, sit down for sometime and enjoy the panoramic view. Do not carry food items as monkey's are good at snatching them in a blink. The road to the parking space from the mainroad is very narrow and rocky, avoid taking your car till the parking space if you see congestion.

Beautiful place, the carvings are fascinating and very ornate. There are four caves and you can cover them in 1-2 hours. There is Bhootnath Temple, Agastya Lake, archeological museum and few more ancient temples nearby in walking distance which you can explore after the caves. I'd recommend to visit only on weekdays if you really want to explore the place.

One of the most important places to see in Badami. The caves are accessible by car or by walk. It's about 15 min walk from bus stand. There are 4 caves. They have many intricate carvings and some have paintings too. The steps are high but not too many. There are many monkeys on the surrounding hills so one has to be careful. Ticket is 25 Rs. for Indian national with no charges for photography.

Badami comes under Bagalkot district in Karnataka, is popular for rock-cut temples and caves. Badami was ruled by Chalukyas from 540 AD to 757AD. Pulakeshin I established the city in 540AD and made it his capital as the place was protected by sandstone cliffs on three sides. Kirtivarman I and Mangalesha constructed the cave temple. Badami was previously known as Vatapi and was the capital of Chalukyas. The Badami caves have many Hindu temples inside them. The caves are on the bank of an artificial lake. The temples in the caves are dedicated to different deities like Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, and their various incarnations. Badami caves were built by using sandstone available on the hills in the town. The caves have entrance, a mukha mandapa or veranda, a hall, and a small shrine or grarbha griha. The veranada is supported by a series of columns and brackets. The caves were built on the basis of Nagara and Dravida architecture. There are five caves in Badami out of which four are man-made and fifth is natural.  The caves is opened for the tourists from 9:00am to 5:30pm on all days of the week including public holidays. It takes around two to three hours to visit all the caves as there are many temples and other structures which the tourists can visit. The period of October to March is the best time to visit the caves as the climate is very pleasant in these months. In the rest of the months, the temperature is quite high and is not suitable to visit the caves. The tourists have to buy tickets in order to visit the caves. Indian tourists have to pay Rs. 10 per person while foreign tourists have to pay Rs. 100 per person. There is no entry fee for the children whose age is below 15 years. Badami caves are located at Badami which is a small town but is well-connected by road and rail network to major cities of India. There is no airport in the town but Belgaum and Hubli are nearest airports from where flights frequently depart and arrive from major Indian cities.

Badami Caves are one if the unique caves which have lot of minor carvings. Once you climb a small hill to see all the caves, you get a best view of the city where there is a big River and temples surrounded to river. There are few monkeys near the caves as well. Security is also there so that people don't damage the property. But the caves from inside really smell bad since people have already littered the place. There are lots of temples, museum to be seen around Badami.

The Malaprabha River is 3 miles (4.8 km) away. The cave temples are 14 miles (23 km) from the UNESCO world heritage site Pattadakal and 22 miles (35 km) from Aihole – another site with over a hundred ancient and early medieval era Hindu, Jain and Buddhist monuments. Badami, the one time capital of the Chalukyas , is noted several temples, some structural & other rock-cut, of the 6th & 7th Centuries. The foundations of Badami, or Vatapi as it was called, were laid by Pulakeshi I (535 – 566 AD) his son Kirtivarman, the Ist (567 – 598 AD), beautified the town with temples & other buildings. Mangalesha (598 – 610 AD) brother of Kiritavarman I completed the construction of the cave temples & endowed the temples with the village on the occasion of the installation of the image of Vishnu. The greatest ruler of the dynasty was Pulakeshi II (610-642 AD) who among others defeated the Pallava King Mahendra Verman I. The Pallava later captured & destroyed Badami to avenge their defeat Badami was also in the possession of the Vijayanagar Kings, The Adil Shahis, The Savanur Nawabs, The Marathas, Hyder Ali & finally the British who made it part of the Bombay Presidency.

India is a treasure house of spectacular architectural sites, most of which display craftsmanship and sculptural brilliance and whose beauty cannot be described in words. Many a time, words do little justice to these architectural gems that have been standing tall for several centuries. One such sight is Badami in Karnataka that is home to a set of awe-inspiring cave temples that date back to the 6th and 7th century AD.

Beautiful and divine since we can see here. Badami Cave Temples are located in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka. The Badami Cave Temples are believed to be the origin of the cave temples. These temples are built by digging out a huge red sandstone hill. These temples are the beauty of the Saiva and Vaishnava Buddhist Jain traditions. Tourists say goodbye to Badami with a smile and heart after seeing the sculptures and their stories.

Visited Badami Caves on November 14, 2023. The rock-cut caves are stunning, with four dedicated to different deities: Cave 1 to Lord Shiva with a remarkable Nataraja sculpture, Cave 2 to Lord Vishnu, Cave 3 to Lord Brahma, and Cave 4 as a Jain temple. Precautions: Plan Early morning visits to avoid crowds. Beware of abundant monkeys, snatching the belongings. Tricky and small roads lead to the car parking area. Better choose an auto rickshaw. For good photos, evenings are best but crowded. Plan 5-6 hours to explore Badami Caves, the Bhoothanath Temple, and the Shivana Gudi Hill Temple (need to walk across the lake). Don't forget to have food in hotel pakwan. Best vegetarian hotel in badami.

Beautiful majestic cave temples. Architectural precision. Sculptures are beautifully carved in the caves. Sad part is one can see many people sitting on the sculptures just for mere pictures. This might break the sculptures. These are ancient and we must realise that we need to protect them for the next generations to view and study. There are few barricades kept so that people don’t touch the sculptures but there are large number of tourists visiting this place and we can see many breaking rules. Be careful while carrying bags as monkeys often attack. Better not to display any eatables and water bottles as monkeys snatch this away.

In Cave 1, among various sculptures of Hindu divinities and themes, a prominent carving is of the Tandava-dancing Shiva as Nataraja. Cave 2 is mostly similar to Cave 1 in terms of its layout and dimensions, featuring Hindu subjects of which the relief of Vishnu as Trivikrama is the largest. The largest cave is Cave 3, featuring Vishnu-relate, and it is also the most intricately carved cave in the complex. Cave 4 is dedicated to revered figures of Jainism. Around the lake, Badami has additional caves of which one may be a Buddhist cave. Another cave was discovered in 2015, about 500 metres (1,600 ft) from the four main caves, with 27 Hindu carvings.

What a man made caves. Unbelievable architecture and finish. A guide is highly recomended. The location has very good panoramic view, The professional govt guide's words will literally take you to the 15th century chalukya samrajya. This heritage should top the world heritage list. Unfortunately there are a few hundred families live nearby. They have to shift atlease 300 mts far from the place, so that the caves will be declared as world heritage. Karnataka govt should do something about it forgetting their vote bank politics.

Walkable distance from bus stand. Way going through is very narrow and dirty lanes. Beware from monkeys. 4 caves, 1 natural cave and 2 Bhootnath temples, Archaeological Museum are must watch places if you are a history lover. Just hated surrounding area. Google maps is must. All can be done in 2-3 hours.

Fabulous place. Depicts the very esthetics and grandeur of Indian history. A good place for kids to know about Indian history. The view from top is amazing. Be careful of monkey here and avoid carrying food in hand. best time to visit is between October to February. Avoid afternoon. Weekends can be crowded because of various school trips at the caves.

Loved it! Definitely worth a visit atleast once in a lifetime. My personal suggestion to anyone planning to visit this place is to make use of the guides available out there. He'll charge you around Rs.400 to Rs.800 (prices vary depending on the time of visit- because I had visited during the Corona Virus pandemic. The prices also vary upon request). You'll be able to enjoy the beauty of this place even if you don't opt for a guide, but you'll be missing out on the historical importance of the place... But, let me inform in advance that there are information boards outside each cave which will give you a pretty detailed account of the importance of each cave. Happy touring😁

Badami, formerly known as Vatapi, is a town and headquarters of a taluk by the same name, in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka, India. It was the regal capital of the Badami Chalukyas from AD 540 to 757. It is famous for its rock cut structural temples. It is located in a ravine at the foot of a rugged, red sandstone outcrop that surrounds Agastya lake. The caves in Badami were built around 6th century AD by the early Chalukyas.

Woww Amazingly Awesome...!! This place has 4 caves and is a complex of Hindu, Jain and the Buddhist cave temples. You can observe the detailed carvings with a Finishing perfection. All such caves are carved in a single rock. Please be aware of Your belongings , wallets, camera , mobile etc due to monkey gang. Fort is located the top of the cave but doors are shut for visitors due to security reasons. Carvings of Ardhanarishwara, Shiva, Nataraja and Bahubali are seen in the caves.

The Badami cave temples are a complex of four Hindu cave temples located in Badami, a town in the Bagalkot district in northern part of Karnataka, India. The caves are considered an example of Indian rock-cut architecture, especially Badami Chalukya architecture, which dates from the 6th century. Badami was previously known as Vataapi Badami, the capital of the early Chalukya dynasty, which ruled much of Karnataka from the 6th to the 8th century. Badami is situated on the west bank of a man made lake ringed by an earthen wall with stone steps; it is surrounded on the north and south by forts built in later times. The Badami cave temples represent some of the earliest known examples of Hindu temples in the Deccan region. They along with the temples in Aihole transformed the Malaprabha River valley into a cradle of temple architecture that influenced the components of later Hindu temples elsewhere in India....

(Translated by Google) A series of temples carved out of the rock in a context of powerful beauty. The warm shade of red sandstone with infinite streaks and polychrome scrolls well frames the refined decorations and beautiful statues that meet along the ascension. Frequented by mostly local tourists, it enjoys a joyful and relaxed atmosphere. ATTENTION to the monkeys !!! The numerous macaques are intrusive and rather aggressive (we tried to steal the backpack), having a stick to dissuade them is not a bad idea.

Cave 2, lying to the west of Cave 3 and facing north, was created in late 6th century. It is almost same as Cave 1 in terms of its layout and dimensions, but it is dedicated primarily to Vishnu. Cave 2 is reached by climbing 64 steps from the first cave. The cave entrance is a verandah divided by four square pillars, which has carvings from its middle section to the top where there are yali brack.

(Visited in June 2019) - This is the second cave within Badami cave temples, and is dedicated to Vaishnava tradition. Inside the cave, there is an awesome & grand image of Lord Vishnu as Varaha, saving Godess Bhu-Devi, one of the earliest carvings of Varaha (Bhu-Varaha Panel/Relief). Interestingly, Chalukyas seemed to love this depiction as the same can be found in temples of Aihole as well as cave no 3 at Badami.

  • 4/5 Geetha P. 5 years ago on Google
Caves 2 & 3 are dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Cave 2 is reached by climbing 64 steps from the first cave. Constructed after cave 3 in the late 6th century, it is the smallest of the 4 caves. Centrepiece of Cave 2 is a large carving of Trivikrama, taking one of the 3 steps to save the world from the demon king Bali. Below the raised step is the carving of Vamana with a royal umbrella, the 5th Avatar of Vishnu Bali admits defeat & clings to Vishnu's leg in submission. Dwarf musicians are in the lower panel. In another carving, Varaha, the 3rd avatar of Vishnu, takes the form of a boar to rescue the earth goddess, Bhu Devi, from the depths of cosmic ocean. Vasuki, the king of snakes is shown praying. Dancing ganas are seen in the lower panel. Beautiful carvings are found on the ceiling One is wheel with 16 spokes of fish & the other is a pattern of four swastikas that can be drawn without lifting our hand

This 2nd Cave Temple is dedicated to the deity Vishnu. But we can’t find the idol of the God inside the sanctum, the idol was looted by the people because it was made of gold/silver they say. One can find the 4 incarnations of the God Vishnu inside the Temple, so as we can tell that this is a Vishnu Temple. You can also find the lifestyle sculptures of people living back then.

It's the beauty foot print of the great dynasty presence and pride of Karnataka. Just so amazing to see the carvings, cutting using the rock hill having many caves with different theme depicting the Indian Mythology and history. Parking available yet road reaching there is very very compact and narrow. There is crowd, so ensure your own safety norms. Entrance charges is ₹25 each, I feel too much considering all segment of people, ₹5 is reasonable. Same charges found at Aihole, Pattadakal. Just a caution, don't carry any bag except mobile with you to be peaceful from monkeys. Happy watching

The view here is really awesome and the Agastya lake is one of a kind. The constant gentle breeze will make you stay there for a long time. The only precaution we have to take is about the monkeys roaming there. Make sure you don't carry any food packets or water bottles during the short climb, becuase the monkey's are at a constant watch to snatch them from you.

The caves are a good place to visit as it is surrounded by various other places near by such as the Badami Fort a temple and a water body probably a natural lake. The caves consists of one natural cave and a few man-made caves which contain various carving which are in good condition. It also has a cave temple but sadly the idols of the gods there are missing. The place has a very nice view from the top which tempts you to take pictures. The monkeys there are a bit troublesome they sometimes snatch food and sellphones from your bags and get on to moving cars they even open bags of people in search of food. The place needs a guide who could tell you the importance and could explain you the sculptures there

Local Govt should do more to develop it further and attract tourists. Will definitely visit this place again!

Great structures must visit, you can see how the great Indian art, history and culture was destroyed in wars by foreign invaders. It seems quite disturbing when you think of it. These sculptures are made way back marvel of engineering and technology in those time. This makes everyone think the achievement of ancient time and their thinking towards developing society a must visit place I would say

Badami Caves Temples are a complex of four Hindu caves temples, representing the rock-cut architecture of the Chalukyan dynasty. Curiously, the caves are carved out in single stone and having statues hewn from the rock itself. Tourists, who look for famous places to visit in Badami, must come here once. Without visiting this exhilarating place, one's trip to Badami will never get fulfilled. The place is also blessed with beautiful surroundings that can be etched in your eyes.

One of the marvelous structures in India. The entire rock is a monolith and there are 4 levels of astonishing sculpting skills. The sculptures are said to have been built top-to-bottom inside the single piece of rock. The first layer is dedicated to Lord Shiva, second to Vishnu , third cave features both Shiva and VIshnu and fourth dedicated to Jainism. Word of advice to visitors: There are lot of monkeys who will snatch bags/bags in your hand and so be very careful. They are also aggressive if shout or hurl actions at them.

The caves are excellent and sculpture carvings are adorable. Mostly like Mahabalipuram. Surely have to visit once. It takes 800 km from chennai. Many other places to visit near by. I have shown in the photos👇

Badami doesn’t need an introduction. If you don't know, please Google it bro. It was a dream-come-true moment for us to visit one the wonders of India. Proud to be born in this great nation. Only have one request to the Government. People have created slums around the place and they are using the lake for washing clothes. Please look into this. This is a UNESCO world heritage site for God's sake. We have to protect our prides.

Stunning Historical Gem, Mind the Monkeys! This site is a stunning blend of beauty and history. To beat the heat, visit in the evening as the cave's last entry is at 5:30 pm. Beware of the mischievous monkeys—they're attracted to everything, even flowers in your hair! Leave all belongings behind. Despite the monkey antics, this place is truly worth a visit. The intricate carvings and captivating stories will transport you to another time. Just remember to plan accordingly and enjoy the mesmerizing experience!

Visit the place when there is less sun. You have to climb steps. There are monkeys around the place and please take care of what you carry in your hand. Agastya lake is visible from the top. Each floor in the cave is dedicated to different gods. from Shiva, Vishnu, Buddha to mahavir jain. You will get some great photos in the evenings. Carry a water bottle with you.

  • 5/5 Avinash V. 2 years ago on Google
The main attraction in Badami . Cave temples carved out of huge rocks / circa 6th/ 7th century . 4 caves with different depictions - Shiva , Vishnu , jain . Also offers a wonderful view of the Bhootnath temple and Agastya lake . One would need to walk up stairs for each level . Relatively easy for elders . The caves as such were well maintained ( visited in Dec 2021) , no batty / putrid smells , given that they are ancient caves . The place can get crowded , so suggest visiting early in the morning - before the crowds - allows you to enjoy the place and also take pictures . Monkeys are a menace - quite honestly , the place is absolutely crowded with them - so one needs to make sure that no food / packets are visible - keep covered / concealed . The place has a small entry fee ( cheaper if bought online) and a paid parking ( expensive but still available !) . Overall a wonderful place and one of the highlights of Karnataka tourism .

Most of us visit Badami only to see these wonderful cave temples. It is astonishing to see and remember the talent and effort people might have put in to make these temples carved out of stone and how it is still standing strong. No photo or video can describe the beauty of this place. The view from the caves which includes Agastya lake surrounded by the natural fort and The Boothanatha temples are a scene to our eyes. Please include Pattadakkal and Badami Fort to your list while visiting Badami.

There are total 4 caves here. Cave 1 is dedicated to Lord Shiva and there is a shiva linga inside but it’s not a working temple. There are ornately carved sculptures on the walls and the ceilings of the caves. Vamana avtar of Lord Vishnu can be seen on the right side as you enter the cave. Ceiling has naga carving and other carvings too. Garbh grah does not have the idol and the walls do not have much work on them.

With sheer tourist footfall on weekends the place becomes lively albeit at the cost of tranquility. Cave structures are intact and are clean but dampness over the years gives an eerie feeling. Rest it is a work of art and one must admire our ancestors great efforts towards the art and architecture of this calibre. Hope we and our future generations preserve this heritage for posterity.

Enthralling and transporting experience when you include the caves, the ghats, temples and the museum. Children and adults alike were captivated by the sheer scale and ingenuity of the art displayed here. Approach road is dangerously narrow and can be as frustrating as the hordes of monkeys.

Great place but there is a lot of walking and climbing. Be sure to pack plenty of water and be wary of the troops of wandering monkeys. The carvings are next level but the caves have a distinct smell of bat droppings.
