During our family tour to ‘Magical Hampi’ in Karnataka, while returning to home, on route we gave a visit to the ‘Durga Temple’ in Aihole. It is located at around 36 Km away from Badami and about 15 Km away from Pattadakal. Durga Temple is a Hindu temple which is of medieval age. Durga Temple is not used for regular worship. In reality, there is no idol of Goddess Durga in this temple, and neither Durga is worshiped. But it is dedicated to Vishnu. Durga Temple is related to the Chalukya period. On the entrance of the temple, there are two stairs which reach the porch of the temple. The walls and pillars of the porch are decorated with statues of the Hindu Goddesses. Statues of various Hindu deities are kept on the walls of the temple. Due to which the temple looks very beautiful and amazing. It is open from 9 AM to 6 PM and the entry tickets is Rs.10/- per person for Indians. It is a must visit place during your trip to Badami.

The Durga temple is a medieval Hindu temple located in Aihole in the state of Karnataka, India. It is part of a pending UNESCO world heritage site. Apart from the fine carvings, it is famous as a rare apsidal or round-ended Hindu temple, representing a final stage in the transition of the ancient chaitya hall tradition to later Hindu temple architecture... The temple was probably built in the late 7th century by the dynasty of the Chalukyas; it is the largest of a group of over 120 temples at Aihole. The architecture of the temple is predominantly Dravida with Nagara style also is used in certain areas. The Durga Temple belongs to Badami Chalukya architecture. Even though the temple features a Durga sculpture, the origin of the name is not because of its dedication to Durga goddess, but because Durga means protector or a fortress. The temple formed part of a fortification probably of the Marathas; old photos show walls built on the roof. The original dedication of the temple may have been to the sun god Surya, or perhaps either Vishnu or Shiva as the representations of Vishnu are as numerous as those of Shiva. The most original feature of the temple is a peristyle delimiting an ambulatory around the temple itself and whose walls are covered with sculptures of different gods or goddesses. The rounded ends at the rear or sanctuary end include a total of three layers: the wall of the sanctuary itself, the main temple wall beyond a passageway running behind this, and a pteroma or ambulatory as an open loggia with pillars, running all round the building. Stone grilles with various geometrical openwork patterns ventilate the interior from the ambulatory. The heart of the shrine (garba griha) is surmounted by a tower which announces the future higher towers shikharas and vimanas. The amalaka that once crowned the shikara is on the ground nearby (visible in top picture)....

Must Visit Temple in Aihole , After seeing temples in Aihole , Pattadkalu then we realised how our ancestors are rich in civilization and how vast is our Hindu culture ,Please read some article and History about this chalukya empire then you better know the places below writing some History about this Temple ..... The Durga temple is an early 8th-century Hindu temple located in Aihole, Karnataka, India. Originally dedicated to Surya, it has the most embellished and largest relief panels in Aihole depicting artwork of Shaivism, Vaishnavism, Shaktism and Vedic deities. Apart from its fine carvings, it is notable for its apsidal plan – a rare example among early Chalukyan Hindu temple architecture. Though dedicated to Surya, the temple is now named Durga because a durg or fortified lookout was constructed on top of it after the 13th-century during the wars between Hindu kingdoms and Islamic Sultanates. This rubble lookout survived through the 19th-century when this site was rediscovered (it is now gone, temple has been restored). The Durga temple is the most prominent attraction in Aihole for tourist and scholars. It is a part of a pending UNESCO World Heritage Site application.

The name is a little misleading...its not dedicated to goddess durga , but something to do with durg( fort). The chalukya architecture continues and its finer here...the complex has around 7 monuments....the intricate art inside each of them is mind blowing...a must visit in the triad list...

Located in Aihole group of temples, Durga temple is confused with दुर्गा (Goddess) while it is दुर्ग (Fortress or किला). Confusion is due to English spelling only. However, one दुर्गा idol does exist in the temple though it is dedicated to Shiva and Vishnu with almost equal number of depictions. Whether you are in interested in photography or in ancient architecture or just lazy traveller set out to explore wonderful places on earth, this is worth visiting. You may spend hour(s) exploring the beautiful architecture, intricate carvings or beautiful depiction of Hindu gods. UNESCO World Heritage Site with unique round ended temple. Must compliment Archaeological Survey of India for great upkeep of well manicured lawns and even for the restoration and maintenance of the buildings and museum. Limited facilities and limited options for water/ Snacks etc. Several stalls with local seasonal fruits atvthe entrance. If you are paranoid about the quality, bring yourself but please do not litter inside the beautiful heritage of India.

Aihole Durga temple in Karnataka was built by Chalukya dynasty between the 7th and 8th century. The temple is often mistaken to be a Durga Temple. The presiding deities of the temple are Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. The word ‘Durga’ here actually means fortress. The most attractive feature of the temple is a peristyle delimiting an ambulatory around the temple with the walls covered with sculptures of various gods or goddesses. Two staircases provide access to the porch at the temple entrance. The parapet is carved with niches and animals. The porch gives access to 'Mukha-mandapa' and "sabha-mandapa" leading into the Garba-Griha. The Durga Temple Aihole is quadrilateral, and the contour of the temple exhibits the Gajaprasta style. Also known as the fortress temple, Durga Temple Aihole depicts a Buddhist chaitya which is adorned with carvings. The seven-headed serpent carved at the ceiling of the Durga Temple of Aihole is an impressive work by the artisans. The temple walls are decorated with sculptures of Hindu gods and goddesses. There are several rooms along with a Garba Griha where the spirit of the shrine is located. The elevated plinth, the big galleries, and the molded adhisthana are the characteristics of the Durga Temple. The sculptures of Lord Narashima, Goddess Chamundi, and Lord Shiva are the other attractions of the Durga Temple.

Nice place to spend evening time with friends and family. •Entry fee is ₹25 offline and ₹20 online(but in online u need to fill ur personal details nd verify ur identity). •There is also a museum located near the temple which was closed when I visited. •NOTE: "ASI should maintain the sculptures. As I posted a video here, It shows how some sculptures are not taken care of "

Unique temple. The area has 8 temples overall named after people who used to live here. These temples are without any deity in it to worship. This area was used as a school for the students of architecture at that time. Durga temple along with 64 yogini temple in MP has inspired architect of Indian Parliament.

Such a beautifully maintained historic group of monuments. Heaven to eyes of people who like architecture and carvings. I'm lost for words to describe such beautiful place. Even after such a beatings and loot out from worst of empires that existed, it still stands to be mesmerized. Pattadakallu and aihole temples are the best.

Central attraction in Aihole - it is a “Durg” ( near a fort) temple and does not have Durga as the main deity ( hence a misnomer ). It is situated about 45 mins from Badami. There is parking alongside the entrance and free ( for now ) . There is an entrance fee ( cheaper if you book online ) Excellent complex of temples and reasonably well maintained . Get in early ( place opens at sun rise) to avoid crowds , to get good pictures . Visited in Dec 2021. There are a few small eateries around but surprisingly none were open even at 10 am . The tender coconut and fruit sellers were the saviours . Can be combined with Pattadakal as a half day trip from Badami ( either early morning or post lunch - to beat the heat )

Aihole is a very small village in Bagalkot district of Karnataka state. It was considered as the cultural centre of Western Chalukyans who ruled the region from 6th to 8th century. The name Aihole believed to come from “Ayyavole Arya-volal” (the valley of elders). The village is located on the banks of Malaprabha river.  Today, Aihole has more than hundred ruins of temples and two rock-cut temples scattered around the village.  The Archeological Survey of India (ASI) is having a challenge in securing these precious arts and  cultural heritage of Chalukyas which were later defaced and decimated by the dogmatic invaders. Unfortunately, the destruction of these cultural sites are not explained in detail in our “secular school curriculum” or in any Museums including the ASI Museum in Aihole. Today, ASI maintains a few ruins in their complex and provide access to tourists and visitors. The most recognizable temple within the complex is the Durga Temple. The temples shape as well as the sculptures around the inner and outer courtyard are simply outstanding examples of Chalukyas sophistication of arts, architecture and sculptures. Other temples in the complex are: -         Suryanarayan temple -         Ladkhan Temple (high time to change the name of this temple) -         Gaudaragudi Temple -         Nadyar temple -         Chakra temple -         Trikudeshwara temple -         … There is also a step well and an ASI Museum within the Complex.

The Sri Durga Temple in Aihole, Karnataka, India, is a remarkable and unique example of ancient Indian architecture and is one of the most prominent and visited monuments in this historic town. Aihole, often referred to as the "Cradle of Indian Temple Architecture," boasts over 100 temples, with the Durga Temple being a standout for its distinct design and historical significance. Dated to the late 7th or early 8th century, the Durga Temple was built during the reign of the Chalukyas, a dynasty known for its significant contribution to Indian architecture. Contrary to what its name might suggest, the temple is not dedicated to Goddess Durga. The name 'Durga' refers to the temple's location within a fortification or 'durg' in Sanskrit.

Visited the temple while traveling from Hampi to Badami. The temple itself is beautiful. There's a nominal entry fee. Other complexes like Badami or Pattadakallu are considerably bigger than this. Surrounding area is not kept clean by the people though, and that was the only negative point. Overall a good place to visit.

Heralded as the ‘cradle of Hindu/ Dravidian temple architecture’, Aihole is a tranquil village on the banks of Malaprabha River. Hundreds of temples pepper the villages and fields nearby. The most noteworthy among them is the Durga Temple composed of a semicircular apse, an elevated plinth and a gallery encircling the sanctum. Durga temple is the primary attraction in Aihole and most spectacular representations of Aiholë temples. Durga temple complex houses an archaeological museum and art gallery.

Aihole Durga temple dates back to the 8th century and is a fine example of Chalukyan architecture. Unlike other temples, it has an apsidal plan. Multiple sculptures adorn the walls and ceilings. The temple is a real beauty in red sandstone. Note: Temple is dedicated to Surya but named Durga (a misnomer) due to the fact that there was a lookout built on top of it once making it fort like (Durg)

The monument is well maintained by ASI. It is very clean. It will be little tiring to explore this place during the summers as it is very hot during these days. They do not charge for DSLR but there will entry fee for individuals. You can get a guide who will explain the history behind this town and depicts the sculptures drawn on the walls/pillars. There are many small temples built within the fort but these are now monuments and no worship is carried over here. Overall a nice place to visit if you excited about knowing the rich culture and heritage of Karnataka.

Most prominent temple in the Aihole group of temples. Built in 7th century, this is yet another example of the exemplary art and architecture of India. Carvings on the walls and ceiling of this temple are marvellous. Many stories are depicted on its walls. If you are a history buff then you should definitely visit it. There is an entry fee of 25₹ and if you are to use the camera you need to shell out another 25₹. There are guides available and charge 500₹ for the group. Complex is huge and well maintained. Site is under the maintenance of ASI and they are doing pretty good job. You just need to pay the fee at the main site. There are many other temples around Aihole. You can visit if you are interested.

Temple complex built by early chalukyas of badami . This temple complex is supposed to be the cradle of Indian temple archetecture as most of the experiments in temple archetecture was done here and then later adapted to other parts of India. This complex hosts the Durga temple and ladkhan temple .

I visited Aihole the World Heritagesite, Shri Durga temple, in the last week of March 2023. * Located in Karnataka, India. Temples and sculptures carved in big stones, monolithic rocks of sandstone, and Granites. * Location: Can reach this place - Hungung Bus station to Aihole or From Ilkal to Aihole or Badami to Aihole using KSRTC bus( Karnataka State Transport Buses) . It takes 1 hour from Badami to Aihole. * Specialty of Site: Rock Carvings, Ancient heritage site, Sandstone rock art, museum. The Durga temple doesn't have any Idol of Durga Devi( Goddess) ... but it is misinterpreted as Devi temple, whereas it is a Durg temple ( Fort temple). * Wonderful carvings of Lord Ganesha in different forms can be seen, Temple ceiling, pillars, and steps walls have different carvings of Lord Vishnu in Varah avatar, Narshima avatar and more... Mesume is located on the premises and have lot of ancient artifacts... One can plan to Visit : Aihole - PattadaKala - Badami - Hampi ( All ancient world heritage sites) in 2 to 3 days

A group of chalukyan Dynasty temples, there are 120 temples in Aihole and Aihole was a dedicated center for learning temple architecture. Goverment has to do a lot of work to protect these monuments because as of now only a few has been protected..others are simply being used by the locals as their home.

I think tourism is not entertained properly here, other than these places kept clean the tourist has no restaurant facilities available here, no shops no parking facilities and no hygenic places to take rest. Tourists from other states has to pay extra cash for everything they buy more than the mrp mentioned. But the temple is still a pure piece of art

A quaint village which after conservation efforts led to the present archaeological site to be preserved and developed to attract tourists. Parking is available at the entrance and tickets can be purchased at the counter or booked by scanning a QR code displayed at the counter. Keep in mind that tickets to the museum should be purchased separately. The museum is situated inside the complex and opens at 9am with the complex itself opening doors to the public by 6 am and remains up to 6pm. Aihole monuments preserve evidence of North Indian temple architecture styles that are missing elsewhere.Apsidal gauri temple is the main attraction here along with the Lad Khan group of temples. Most surviving monuments belong to the 7th to 10th century period.Aihole is a major archaeological site featuring over one hundred and twenty stone and cave temples spread along the Malaprabha river valley, in Bagalakote district. Hunagunda Taluk.Over one hundred Aihole temples are Hindu, a few are Jain and one is Buddhist. The best time to visit is during monsoons and winter. Early chalukyan experimentation with different architectural styles is evident here. The monuments at Aihole-Badami-Pattadakal show the existence and a history of interaction between the early northern style and early southern style of Hindu arts.

The area around the monument, the entire site is very underdeveloped. The availability of butter milk outside the gate is a welcoming sign, if you visit in summer. There is river, which you can enter within the premises. Also maintained by central organization so it's very well taken care of. It shows the great architecture of chalukyas ... Architectural marvel's from the Chalukya kings built 1300 yrs ago. All monuments are protected by UNESCO and ASI and superbly maintained by them. Here one can find the replica of our Parliament building. Please try to hire a genuine guide when you are there as it becomes more informative and meaningful after having travelled all that distance. During the winter months, one can see hordes of foreign tourists interested in the architecture of the place. A handful of goans also dot the landscape looking for inspiration. In the cluster of these marvels, one finds the Durga temple which also has sculpted images of Gods. A beautiful temple by any standard and worth a visit. When you go to Badami, cover both Aihole and Pattadkal. For senior citizens, a battery operated vehicle is provided.

This is the cardinal monument in Aihole, The Durga Temple. For solo travelers you need travel by city bus from Badami to Aihole or hire an auto which could be slightly expensive. Coming to the monuments, it’s absolutely wonderful , mostly ruined but still beautiful to look around. There on the spot guides whom you can hire and get to know the history in detail. I spotted cranes, mongoose, and an owl while here. Aihole must be a spot you need to visit when you’re in Badami.

Beautiful architecture of 8th century.  Durga temple is an early 8th-century Hindu temple located in Aihole, Karnataka, India. Originally dedicated to Surya, it has the most embellished and largest relief panels in Aihole depicting artwork of Shaivism, Vaishnavism, Shaktism and Vedic deities. Apart from its fine carvings, it is notable for its apsidal plan – a rare example among early Chalukyan Hindu temple architecture

The Durga temple is the best known Aihole temples. It has a misleading name, because the temple is not named after goddess Durga. The structure stands near the ruins of a fort-like enclosure or durg. It is dedicated to Hindu gods Surya and Vishnu. Sansad bhavan in Delhi has some resemblance with Durg Temple. The Lad Khan Temple is near the Durga temple. The temple is named after the Muslim commander. The temple embeds three concentric squares. It is supported by a set of 12 intricately carved pillars. The wall has floral designs. The temple inside is lit with natural sunlight coming in from lattice windows of the north Indian style.

Please get a guide as they can tell you the rich history of Aihole and explain with each statue and pillar how this place is/was the school of architecture for Southern Indian style of buildings and temples. We spent a lot of time looking at and amazed by the ingenuity of our ancestors from 1500 years ago. Imagine how world will be 1500 years from now in year 3700 CE. That’s how far ahead we have to go to be at same place how far behind we have to go

👍 If travelling from Pattadakal, Ravana Phadi caves are on right side, just before Aihole temple complex. Or just few hundred meters after Hachappagudi temples which will be on left when coming from Pattadakal. One star less due to off location. It is sort of "In the middle of nowhere" No facilities n...
