Mahabaleshwar Temple in Gokarna is one of the famous temples of South India and there is a good rich history behind it. I would recommend it to read before visiting the temple. Some of the interesting facts about the temple - 1. No Foreigners are allowed. 2. Men are allowed with lungi as attire (no jeans, pants or shorts) - It can be bought outside from markets in around 70 bucks. 3. Women are allowed with traditional Indian attires like saree. Also lines can be huge on peak days (It took me 1.5 hours in the line on Saturday) Historic temple and a landmark destination in Coastal Karnataka. Gokarna is popular along with this trample for performing last rites in seashore. Just 5 min walk to a beautiful clean beach from here. Traditional Indian attire mandatory for entry. Men must be in Dhothi and Shalya. You can stay and enjoy beach holidays in nearly 10-15 resorts nearby

The temple houses a 6-foot-tall Shiva Linga, referred to as the Atmalinga, which is worshipped fervently. Crafted from granite, it stands as a splendid representation of Dravidian architecture's elegance. This temple finds its mention in the revered Hindu epics, Mahabharata and Ramayana, holding significance comparable to that of Kashi. There's a stringent dress code in place: men are expected not to wear shirts, while women are encouraged to don traditional attire. Our visit granted us a serene glimpse of Atmalingeswara, making our day at the temple truly divine and fulfilling.

This ancient temple has a significant history and is very famous not only regionally but nationally and globally. The temple management and local administration have failed indeed to upgrade the facilities required by the temple and the town keeping in view of the footfall of devotees and visitors which is increasing year over year. Roads are very narrow in this town. Worst parking area for vehicles. Cleanliness in and around the temple is also the worst. Stainless steel railing pipes should be installed for the darshan queue. Drinking water unit for devotees in the queue is literally ill. By seeing the lack of the above mentioned facilities, visitors, at the end could wonder about the use of donations the temple is receiving.

One of the holiest sites in South India. It is the site of the temple of the Atmalinga of Lord Shiva. The line leading up to it gets long and wait times typically range in the 1hr+ range. Men have to compulsorily remove the shirt and baniyan while entering the holy sanctum along with leaving a lungi. The road leading up to it is very narrow and sometimes I wondered if we were even going on the correct road. It gets pretty crowded and hot here, so prepare accordingly. The ground can also get hot while traveling barefoot. Overall blessed to come here and visit the temple.

The temple and its surroundings were disappointing in terms of upkeep and maintenance, with a noticeable lack of effort from the authorities. Despite the temple's renowned status and many global travelers, I didn't find it welcoming. It's crucial for the authorities to prioritize expanding the road width and maintaining the premises regularly. If you plan to visit, it's advisable not to bring a vehicle larger than a hatchback due to road leading to temple/parking is narrow. Better take an auto. Otherwise, if you manage to get in - you should find dedicated parking at walking distance from the temple. Be mindful about the dress code 👈🏼

this is the temple where the Original Atmaling (From the story between Ravana and Ganpati). men are allowed only in Dhotis (can be bought at nominal price outside the temple) you can change clothes behind the Luggage counter (Rs. 10/- per bag) you are allowed to touch the Atmaling, so make sure you do not miss the opportunity and surrender yourself to Shiva.

Great place to visit as it is a different experience for a devotee. I strongly suggest you do research about the temple and its history so that you can absolutely enjoy the moment. Reminder- pants and shorts are not allowed inside, only mundu or dhoti is allowed. There is a huge Nandi (bull) white in color inside the temple that was stunning as I had only seen such a resemblance only in pictures. If you want to go shopping there are shops right outside the main entrance of the temple.

It's beautiful experience. Being the year end and weekend probably wait time is long. We went at 8:20 am and got darshan by 9:30 am I have given 4 star because there is lot of scope of beautification of the temple or improve queue system. Collection is massive, so money shouldn't be problem The temple is one of the seven sacred Muktikshetras or Muktistala ("places of salvation") in Karnataka. It is a place where many Hindus of Karnataka perform obsequies (death rites) for their departed. The six other Muktikshetras in Karnataka are at Udupi, Kollur, Subrahmanya, Kumbasi, Koteshvara and Sankaranarayana

Sri Mahabaleshwara Swami Temple Gokarna is a 4th century ancient Hindu shrine in Karnataka. The temple is built in Dravidian style and looks as simple as it was. The temple faces the cleanest Gokarna beach of Arabian sea. This great temple is dedicated to God Shiva and also known as Atmalinga which is unique in the world. This masterpiece also regarded as Dakshin Kashi, often being paralleled to Shiva temple at Varanasi. it is said that the deity of the temple will bestow immense blessings to devotees, even to those who only glimpse it. There is no fee to enter the temple You can visit the temple from 6 am to 12:30 pm and 5 pm to 8 pm every day. No Foreigners are allowed. Mens are allowed with white lungi and Women are allowed with traditional saree/suits.

Blessed to be here !! One of sacred temple to witness and touch the Maha Shiva's Atmalinga. Temple has major significance in hindusim. Being a very popular piligrim place, temple premises is not well maintained - Inside first circular chamber and outside is full of chaos on busy seasons - Lots of stray cows and their dungs, Littered thrash, footwear's lying on every side of road, too many shops, narrow congested roads. I guess Gokarna was not meant or planned to have a huge crowd. Gokarna faces heavy traffic due to narrow streets, too many shops and lots of stray cows. Every visitors should also contribute along with authorities to keep this holy place clean and neat. Notes: 1. Dhoti (White panche) is compulsory for male 2. Females visitors are allowed traditional wear - Saree or Chudidaar. In case of any other attire then they musy wear dhoti to cover lower body. 3. Prasad - Annadana, is served from temple side twice a day, noon 12-2 PM and Night 7:30-8:30 PM.

Famously known as Dakshina Kashi. But during peak hours or holidays, you won't get to see the temple properly in peace. Too much crowded. And even the road in front of temple that leads to beach is too crowded always. There used to be calmness earlier on. Now due to tourist attractions, the holiness is getting depleted. Just like how Kashi Vishwanath temple 's road that lead to river banks was cleaned up, it's high time that management, local authorities, government need to clean up the road in front that lead to sea, if you want to restore some holiness & serenity. I got to visit the temple in off hours where I couldn't go inside the main premises to see the idol, but could walk around in the outer premises. That was way peaceful enough.

It was crowded, which is usual during the weekend. That too they closed for Maha Mangalarati which is also a common thing. These 2 schools came on excursion hence the queue was too long. The temperature inside the main temple and the vibe make you forget all that you had experienced in the temple to reach here. Indian Traditional outfits are compulsory. Keep a lungi and dupatta with you, so you don't have to buy one outside the temple and pay unnecessarily

Feels accomplished. Such a precious temple to visit across the Gokarna beach. Better to check the temple timings and plan your visit. I would recommend if visiting the temple reach temple premises atleast 20 mins in advance and stand in the queue, so that you can proceed to the as soon as they open the temple else it will be a long queue.

Visited during Sivaratri and the vibe was really good. Important matter for gents and ladies is costume. For males dhoti is and females Indian wear is must. I wore full length skirt and top still the security didn’t allow inside. As I understand long kurti with pants will be allowed. I felt very strict in terms of costume.

Gokarna is a town on the Arabian Sea, in the southwestern Indian state of Karnataka. A popular pilgrimage destination for Hindus, it’s known for sacred sites like Mahabaleshwar Temple, which has a shrine dedicated to the deity Shiva. Nearby, Koti Teertha is a temple tank where devotees wash in the holy waters. The town is also home to beaches such as palm-lined Gokarna, in the center, plus Kudle and Om farther south.

Having the only atmalingam in the country this temple is already special. Points to keep in mind while planning to visit this : Need to enter in white/red lungi with no top for men. You can bath in ocean before taking another bath and visit the temple. Taxi/ auto available from railway station to mahabaleshwar temple at reasonable price. Cheap rooms available nearby for stays. Good filter coffee. Buses to murdeshwar can be taken which goes via Kumta at reasonable price.

"Visiting Shri Mahabaleshwara Temple in Gokarna was a deeply spiritual and enriching experience. From the moment I entered the temple complex, I was enveloped in an aura of reverence and devotion. As I made my way through the sacred halls and courtyards, the rhythmic chants and the fragrance of incense filled the air, creating a sense of peace and serenity within me. The divine presence of Lord Shiva, the presiding deity of the temple, was palpable, and I felt a profound connection as I offered my prayers and performed rituals. Overall, my visit to Shri Mahabaleshwara Temple was a soul-stirring pilgrimage, reaffirming my faith and leaving me with cherished memories that I will carry in my heart forever. It's a sacred destination that holds a timeless appeal, welcoming devotees and seekers from all walks of life to experience the divine presence and find solace in its hallowed halls."
