Its an amazing piece of architecture, Which was constructed during British Raj as Ghanta ghr( hour Clock). This was then converted into Public library.. Now this is the office of Walled City Project Multan and Tourism Department of Punjab. This building is in its original shape , just minor restoration work and renovation work is done.

Ghanta Ghar or Clock Tower of Multan was built in 1884 A.D. during British Raj in British India. After passing the municipal act of 1883 British needed offices to run the city. They started constructing Ghanta Ghar in Multan on 12 February 1884 and it took 4 years to completely build this building.

Ghanta Ghar or Clock Tower of Multan was built in 1884 A.D. during British Raj in South Asia. After passing municipal act 1883 British needed offices to run the city. They started constructing Ghanta Ghar in Multan on 12 February 1884 and it took 4 years to completely build this building. It was constructed over the ruins of Haveli of Ahmad Khan Sadozai which was completely destroyed during Siege of Multan. The hall and building was named 'Ripon Hall and Ripon Building' after the name of Ripon, viceroy of India at that time. And clock tower was named Northbrook Tower after the name of Northbrook, a former viceroy of India (1872-1876). This building was completed, opened and offices shifted in 1888. Hall was named 'Jinnah Hall' after the independence of Pakistan in 1947 and it used for office meetings, cultural programs and public was also allowed to enter here. With passage of time this building became insufficient for offices and small hall was also insufficient for meetings, so offices were shifted from here. Now idea is to change this historic building into a museum. Ghanta Ghar Multan is made a museum by city government called Multan Museum. Funds have been allocated and work has been started. Multan based company Ideafist is designing the 3D Model for the Museum and they are planning to develop the actual 3D image for the museum in future. 3D model is under construction.

The Ghanta Ghar clock tower stands in central Multan directly west of the city's old fortress, and immediately across the street from a major roundabout where a number of streets converge. Built from 1884-88, it is an Indo-Saracenic style building which was used as the headquarters of the municipal government under the direction of the British Raj, who ruled the British Indian empire from 1858-1947. The British had taken control of Multan in 1849 from the collapsing Sikh Empire, beginning 100 years of British rule over the city. Even in 1884, almost two generations following the siege that won the city for Britain, large areas of Multan remained in ruins. The decision was made to construct a grand municipal office building over the ruins of the haveli (mansion) of Ahmad Khan Sadozai, which had been destroyed during the siege. Construction took about four years and the building was named Ripon Hall in honor of the 1st Marquess of Ripon, who ruled as Viceroy of India from 1880-84. The central feature on the building's south facade—its clock tower—was dubbed Northbrook Tower in honor of the 1st Earl of Northbrook, the former Viceroy who served from 1872-76.

Ghanta ghar or time tower is a well known place of Multan.A historical mid place of Multan city. Too much of a crowded place. Clocks are ticking correctly in time. I suggest fixing a high raised Pakistan Flag on this building to make it more prominent and worth seeing.

Ghanta Ghar Chowk Multan is a historical and cultural landmark of the city of Multan, the fifth-largest city in Pakistan. The name Ghanta Ghar Chowk means “Clock Tower Town Square” in Urdu, and it refers to the large intersection near the clock tower of the city, which is also known as Ghanta Ghar or Clock Tower Multan1. The clock tower was built in 1884 by the British colonial authorities, who also named it after their former viceroys, Ripon and Northbrook1. The clock tower was constructed over the ruins of a haveli (mansion) that belonged to Ahmad Khan Sadozai, a local ruler who resisted the British invasion in 18481. The clock tower stopped working in 1985, but was repaired and restarted in 2011 by a watch company1. The clock tower now runs on solar energy and shows the time of PST (Pakistan Standard Time), which is +5 GMT1. Ghanta Ghar Chowk Multan is surrounded by several shrines and marketplaces that reflect the rich history and culture of Multan. Some of the notable places near the chowk are: The Tomb of Shah Rukn-e-Alam, a 14th century mausoleum of a famous Sufi saint who was revered by both Muslims and Hindus.

One of the most crowded and busiest places in Multan. The roads around the clock tower are very congested and the traffic flow is heavy.

It was such a nice place. I stumbled upon this beautiful shop near Ghanta Ghar which has these hand made artifacts. The Ghanta Ghar itself was beautiful. A Guy inside the office was kind enough to allow me to go on the roof top of this tower which was the highlight of my day. Overall it was such a wholesome experience. Highly recommended.
