Excellent place and well maintained. You'll be totally in awe with the interiors. It also throws light on the trade routes and relations that were in place couple of centuries back. You also get a fair idea about the different geographical areas within Mumbai. Definitely a must visit place for art connoisseurs.

Hidden monument in Mumbai and something everyone should visit. The cost of ticket is Rs. 10 per person. The interiors are just amazing. You get to see the history of this place and everything is just perfect. The place is well lit and you can view history of Mumbai way back to 150 years. This will definitely be of interest for historians. The cafe is also good and reasonably priced. A must place to visit if u are near Byculla Zoo. Super place and most recommended place in 2022.

I've been staying in Mumbai for 20+ years! But never seen anything like this! Lovely museum. It gives amazing perspective on the history of India. Hundreds of artefacts and their descriptions give you a glimpse of how India was during the British Era and before that. Artistic creations depicting the villages, the people, the sports and the livelihoods of Indian people of those times are an absolute delight to the eye. The museum also pays tribute to some of the greatest Indian minds who contributed in the preservation of Indian history and culture. A visit to this museum is a true lesson in history. Highly recommended, not to be missed at all!

Beautiful place. One of the best historic museum in mumbai. There ar meant informative things to learn at this place. My only suggestion would be, they should provide audio telemetry and also guides so that tourist can understand easily. Overall the place is great and with a mere fee of 10Rs it's beautiful and well maintained. The staff is supportive and helpful. There are many beautiful artifacts and beautiful sculptors inside the museum. the place is quite informative but everything is written. I wish there was something audio source to learn the information. Also one need to keep the bags outside the museum without any locker only a token is given, so please avoid any valuables.

Wednesday is Holiday, closed. Parking available at the spot. It's a 150 years old monument consisting of wonderful, historically significant rare collection of coins, pictures, drawings and ship models. Variety of old village setting and profession depicted in actual ways. I found it to be superb and informative.

Inside of museum there are different sections of Arts, Crafts, sculptures, statues, Miniature Models, Gallery of Swords n Armors n Weapons, Old Maps and Painting. For art lover 1 day is not enough to see all items. I lived in south Mumbai so its my one of favorites place to visit. If ur in town and wanna explore mumbai, must visit!!! Timing 10AM to 5 PM and museum closes on Wednesday!!

I visited this place three years ago, but when I look back at pictures it was a worth visit.... It is right opposite to 'Rani Bagh'. The museum has miniature of Indians monuments, art pieces, metal idols & mamy more antique things, old currencies... The interior of the museum is so good that it gives you the feeling of visiting a five star restaurant... The entry fee was just 10rs... you can spend ample amount of time over here...

A beautiful museum established in 1872, was initially named as Victoria and Albert Museum. The museum showcases the city’s cultural heritage and history through a collection of arts, costumes and craft of various communities of the Bombay. The museum has a helpful staff and keep on having various exhibitions on an ongoing basis. They have a nice backyard, wish they could improve the existing gift and coffee shop.

Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum is a place for entertainment, knowledge and relaxation. It is near Mumbai Zoo, and it is the oldest museum in the city. In the museum, you'll find artefacts, maps and manuscripts showcasing the rich history and cultural heritage of Mumbai. The museum also displays clay models and has a plethora of photographs and books narrating the story of the city. And it also organises art workshops, cultural performances and lectures from time to time. Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum was opened to the public in 1872. And the place has been known for its magnificence too. The grand metal palisades, staircase railings and the arched supports were all imported from England. And the etched glass designs are reminiscence of the glorious 19th-century architectural style.

People who love to know about history should visit this place... More importantly do take a guide inside who will help in proper understanding of chronology of events and connect all dots.. Without guide, it's just a general look at antiques but with a guide we get to know whole background behind that antique... I would highly recommend this place along with children but with a guide inside.

Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum is the oldest museum in Mumbai. Situated in the vicinity of Byculla Zoo, Byculla East, it was originally established in 1855 as a treasure house of the decorative and industrial arts, and was later renamed in honour of Dr. Bhau Daji Lad. The construction of the present building in Jijamata Udyan in Byculla started in 1862 and was completed in 1871. The museum was opened on 2 May 1872 as The Victoria and Albert Museum, Bombay. A little more than a hundred years later, on 1 November 1975, the Museum was renamed the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum in honour of the man whose vision and dedication enabled its establishment. Dr. Bhau Daji Lad was the first Indian Sheriff of Mumbai, a philanthropist, historian, physician, surgeon and secretary of the Museum Committee when it was first instituted. The Museum is managed by a public-private partnership, a first for a cultural institution in India. The partnership involves the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, the Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation and the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH). Great Place to visit in Mumbai, where you can see Historical things about Mumbai, History of India & many more things to explore....

Oldest Museum in Mumbai city. Not only the artifacts but the building of Victorian architecture is of historical importance. Located in the premises of Veermata Jijabai bhosale udyan the museum is at walking distance from Byculla station across the road. Every Saturday 11.30 am onwards one may get guided tour through museum in English followed by tour in hindi/marathi. In combination with nearby zoo its perfect picnic spots to bring your kids .👍👍

It is a must visit if you are visiting Byculla zoo. The rotating gate is also a heritage, still working and it was made in England. Two floors, ground and first plus a cafe at the behind. They museum has a shop, which is expensive. The cafe is a must visit, only soft drinks, tea, coffee and packed products are available but if you want a break no better place than the hustle bustle in the heart of Mumbai. Nice place for couples to hang out (Tip).

A very great place to visit. It's a perfect Victorian museum with its didactic concepts and display systems. The architecture is just a mind boggling (combination of Palladian and High Victorian). It has many things there right from formation of Mumbai island to people with various backgrounds living here. It has just everything one would wish for. And frankly speaking it is dirt cheap considering 10 Rs that you've to shell out. Just go there and have fun ✨

A beautiful museam, well maintained, located just at the side of Byculla Zoo. Really worth a trip, especially for children. Heritage structure housing a wide collection of well catalogued and miniature displays from around the world. Cute miniature people, locations, and scenes from old India. Only misses an AC and it can get pretty hot on summer days. They've installed some coolers at locations. Entry is very reasonable at Rs10 for adults. You'll have to keep your bag out for security reasons. Photography with mobiles are allowed, but without flash.

The museum had some amazing collections of past history including ancient games of India, Metals and Utensils used in early period. Vintage painting and history of people who settled early in Bombay when it was just an island. It also has a huge Elephant statue outside which was found in Elephanta island which the Britishers tried to take to UK but it was broken while in transit so fixed it and kept it outside the museum for display.

After the Nawab died in 1949, the collections were left behind in his ancestral palace Diwan Devdi. The collection was formerly exhibited there as a private museum, named Salar Jung Museum, which was inaugurated by Jawaharlal Nehru on 16 December 1951.[3][4] Old timers believe that the present collection constitutes only half of the original art wealth collected by the Nawab. His employees siphoned off part of it, since the Nawab depended upon his staff to keep a vigil. In 1968, the museum shifted to its present location at Dar-ul-Shifa, and is administered by a Board of Trustees with the Governor of Telangana as ex officio chairperson under the Salar Jung Museum Act of 1961. Some more art pieces were lost or stolen during the shifting of the museum from Diwan Devdi to the present site.[5]

With a beautiful interior and exceptional arts and crafts, this former Victoria and Albert Museum is great to visit. Foreigner's admission is just Rp. 100 and you can take photos (no flash). Main floor has collections of fine ceramics, metalwork, woodwork, ivory, lacquer, miniature paintings, and other media. Mezzanine has dioramas and figurines that depict India's cultures, trades, games, and religious worship. Galleries off each end and in the rear courtyard offer changing art shows. A snack bar in the rear courtyard provides a place to take a break. Note the museum closes on Wednesday!

Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum is situated in Byculla east and is one of the oldest museums of the city. Its former name was Victoria and Albert Museum. The museum is house of historical photographs of Mumbai, several Archaeological findings, clay models, maps and copper and silver wares. The Kamalnayan Bajaj Mumbai Gallery in the museum tells out about the origin of the city and how it had developed over the years. You can see various documentations made on the lifestyle of the people, their games, and occupations etc of the 19th century which have been preserved here. You will also get to see many Indian regiments of that period being displayed in the gallery. In the Founder’s Gallery you will find the portraits of those extraordinary men who dedicated their lives to build up this museum that we see today. This gallery is meant to pay respect to those great souls who have gifted this museum to all of us. Then you have the 19th century paintings gallery and origins of Mumbai gallery. Another attraction is the Museum Plaza which was opened here in 2012 mainly for recreational activities.

Visited this museum while doing the Mumbai Darshan in 2017, It was an awesome experience. Superb collection of arts and history.. Loved the place.. Highly Recommended 5 Star ⭐🌟⭐🌟⭐ Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum is an institution of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. For the first time in India, a public-private partnership has been established for the management of a cultural institution. In February 2003, an agreement was signed between the Municipal Corporation Greater Mumbai (MCGM), the Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation and the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH). The Museum was established in 1872 as the erstwhile Victoria and Albert Museum, Bombay. As Mumbai’s first Museum, it showcases the city’s cultural heritage and history through a rare collection of Fine and Decorative Arts that highlight Early Modern Art practices as well as the craftsmanship of various communities of the Bombay Presidency. The permanent collection includes miniature clay models, dioramas, maps, lithographs, photographs, and rare books that document the life of the people of Mumbai and the history of the city from the late eighteenth to early-twentieth centuries. The Museum, once in a derelict condition, underwent a comprehensive five-year restoration and won UNESCO’s 2005 Award of Excellence in the field of Cultural Conservation. The Museum re-opened in 2008 with an extensive exhibition program and is committed to promoting contemporary art and culture. The Museum has collaborated with other museums and cultural institutions from around the world to showcase contemporary artists and international exhibitions that relate to the Museum’s permanent collection. In December of 2012, the Museum introduced a dynamic cultural hub, the Museum Plaza, which offers the public a recreational space for performances, outdoor activities, and workshops. The Museum has restored and re-appropriated abandoned spaces to accommodate a Special Projects Space, Museum Cafe, Museum Shop and an Education Centre. Incredible India ❤️😘 Jai Hind Jai Bharat ❣️🤩

We visited this place on a weekday, its closed on Wednesdays usually. Its very close to byculla station so is easy to reach even at a walkable distance. The outsides are just so pleasant you'd wish to go inside. We visited just the museum due to lack of time but it was all worth it! The museum entry fee is less and yet the insides are very well maintained. Its a totally aesthetic place and can be covered in around 2-3 hours as per your pace. It has just two floors but the placement of things is great! We even found old textiles and crafts like ganjifa cards which was totally unexpected to be found! The ceiling is wonderful to capture with great details on it, they even have little sculptures and statues made out of clay/mid that were well dressed as per religion, caste, sects etc! There were more than 100 of those and were very well made and placed behind the glass! The things you get to see here are not as many as the other museums around but it still is very calm and beautiful to visit! A great place to visit with family or friends or even alone! Its a great place to study for people who like history and textiles and even for the ones who love to click and admire the beauty of the museum!

Visited the place and it was closed. Nowhere it has been mentioned and it is still showing open on Google. Even in the website it shows exhibitions going on on the today's date. The security team had the gate closed, telling that the museum has been closed since a year and a half. And no one is picking the call on the available helpline. Extremely mismanaged. Since it's out of the way of other major locations... Would recommend skipping it if not necessary. As is for the zoo which is right besides it, there were more than a 1000 people to see maybe 8-10 animals in tragic conditions. AVOID!!!

Lovely museum, Victorian architecture, and an impressive array of India's rich craft culture which shows the kind of technical skill and innovation that went into the making of bronze statues, bidri, schools of pottery, and so on. Well worth a visit. Has a lovely, if small, gift shop in the rear of the main building.

  • 4/5 Amit S. 3 years ago on Google
The building and facilities are poorly taken care of - give an old time sarkari (governmental) feel (many of today's government facilities look more well kept than this one). Lighting for the displays is particularly bad. Also this attracts big crowd. Nevertheless, it has some priceless and unique collection as some of the photos show. Worth visiting one.

So many artifacts of Mughal and other historic lines can be found in the museum. The ticking clock and many great sculptures are also present here. Well maintained and good food served in the cafeteria. Expect the management to keep up with the pace and go online or any e commerce vending for selling their photographs or any other articles present in the stalls for sale.

It is one of the most popular and must visit place in Hyderabad. It has a Clock which is Few centuries old and it's still working. Every hour the bell rings in the clock, at that time from the clock a small man came out from a room and rang the bell. This toy functionality is amazing. For watching this alone a big crowd assembles near the clock. Chairs and two big screens also placed there for viewing this incident. This palace has kings used Furnitures, Weapons, carved on ivory items, Statues. One amazing statue is from one side it shows a man and in the back side it's shows a women. Don't miss to see this. Lord Elphinstone established the Central Museum of Natural History, Economy, Geology, Industry and Arts, the first museum in Bombay in 1855; George Buist took the major initiative for its inception. In 1857, it was closed to the public and its collection was shifted to the Town Hall. In 1858, George Birdwood was appointed curator of the museum. Soon, a committee was formed, comprising him, Bhau Daji Lad and Jaganath Shunkerseth to raise money for construction of a new building for the museum. The foundation of the new building was laid in 1862. It was built with the patronage of many wealthy Indian businessmen and philanthropists like David Sassoon, Sir Jamsetjee Jejeebhoy and Jaganath Shunkerseth. The construction of the present building in Jijamata Udyan in Byculla started in 1862 and was completed in 1871.[2] The museum was opened on 2 May 1872. In 1975, this museum was renamed as the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum. In 2003, the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) in collaboration with the Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation and the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai undertook extensive refurbishment of the building. After five years of painstaking and intensive work, the Museum reopened to the Public on 4 January 2008.

This is the Oldest museum in Mumbai and third oldest in India. Established in 1870's as Albert and Victoria Museum this has been renamed as Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum in 1975. It is located in Byculla near Zoological garden. The museum has ancient, rare sculptures, artefacts, books, manuscripts, paintings and is worth spending time to go through these cultural heritage signatures. Even the ceiling of entrance hall is beautiful and rich in design. You can wonder at the real life sculptures of Elephant, Kala Ghoda, outside the main building on the gardens. The museum has a nominal entry fee of Rs. Ten for adults and Five for the children. Visit with family to walk through the history of times!

It actually unfair to award only 5 star to this museum. It deserves more stars. It make you aware of your past, culture, history and widen your perception to see your own city.It has treasures in his arm.Original idol of MumbaDevi is placed here, from which the city got it's name,Mumbai. But in portugese language it is pronounced as Bombay,as English people of that era always pronounced it different to the actual spelling. It also has a huge black stone sculpture of elephant at the right side of the entrance. This sculpture brought here in boat from the island Elephanta.,in the nearby sea.The name of the island was derived from this elephant sculpture. This is a very beautiful and wordclass museum in India. It normally closed on every Wednesday.

This is a nice place for kids to learn and admire the awe and grandeur of railway engines and wagons. The old machines have been painted bright colours and placed along rail lines laid within the museum. There are many little models of train lines (electric, steam engines) & building of tunnels. There is a Miniature India model, located upstairs underneath the dome, which is very beautiful. Kids will like it very much. There are 2 joy train rides. Both are enjoyable. Their tickets have to be bought separately. The trains runs through a bridge and 3 tunnels. One train departs from the Museum station and the other one from Bikaner station, built within the museum. The toilets are well maintained. There is drinking water provision. There is a small park for children also. There are no canteen. There is paid parking. There is sanitizer at the entrance gate.

They close the museum at 04:30 and not 5 pm, as is shown over internet. I reached at 04:31 and was denied entry as ticket counter was closed. So visit before 04 :30 if you want to see. I cannot review about inside of museum as was not able to see it.

Walk through the history as you see the nicely arranged Antics and models of Mumbai Upbringing. Feel the History with loads of things displayed here. One should visit this place after visiting Rani Baug or just here. The Place is awesome though not a large Museum.

I've visited this museum several times with different groups of people. It's a beautiful historical structure that was formerly known as the Victoria and Albert Museum but has since been renamed. It displays a variety of Indian handicrafts of varying levels of craftsmanship. They provide free tours on weekends. A well-maintained museum with exhibits depicting Mumbai's evolution over time.

My favourite place in Bombay has finally reopened after the pandemic. This place is like a Wes Anderson film come to life. The architecture is stunning; an Insta dream. The permanent exhibition offers a wonderful anthropological view of this city we call home. More importantly, this museum plays host to the most wonderfully curated contemporary art exhibitions. On Thursdays they conduct film nights. This colourfully colonial structure is a perfect blend of the old and new. It's like travelling back in time for a taste of the modern.

Visited on 21-Nov-21. Overall experience is good. If you are museum lover its good place to visit in Mumbai . Reasonable entry fees. You will get entry only if your have completed both the dose of Corona Vaccine. To show certificate is mandatory (both dose). Bags (Not even small bags) are not allowed to take in. but no provision is made to keep bags outside which is little inconvenient. If bags are not allowed atleast provision has to make for visitor.Beautiful place to visit.

Very good. Although I do not approve of photographers making people move the whole time. I mean, yes, I understand that you want to click pictures but other people, too, paid to watch.

The Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum is one of the oldest museums in Mumbai, and it is dedicated to the history and culture of the city. The museum is located in a beautifully restored heritage building and houses a vast collection of art, artifacts, and exhibits that showcase the rich cultural heritage of Mumbai.

The original and authentic name of the place is Victoria and Albert Museum, Bombay and it is near the Victoria Gardens (Now renamed as Jijamata Udyan) which is built in British style. No doubt the architecture and contents inside is exceptional as it's been built by the British.
