This place is truly iconic. Best place for south Indian food. Simple yet very tasty. Starts very early morning, went here for breakfast and place was already full. Lot of waiting during lunch and dinner hours. They have kept the prices reasonable. Service was quick. The idli and tea was really good. Must visit if you like south Indian food.

Extremely EXTREMELY crowded. Those waiting can start by scoring some vit D outside and slowly sweat their way to the damp of about 300 diners inside, letting off steam under the first fans Bombay saw in the 60's (50's or 70's??). If your group numbers less or greater than 4, get ready to adjust like you've done in the train before being disgorged onto Matunga station platform. Now if you are seated before you've lost all your teeth, congrats! Time to play hide n seek with your sweet waiter with an inconguous smile. Order away! Everything that reaches you tastes like everything else - idli to vada to some slop called upma to dosa......completely indistinguishable. The copious amounts of tasteless sambar and the peer pressure of your fellow diners and the hordes sweating outside will make your mind believe you've had the greatest meal in Mumbai! Last, pay, get out..........and get a life.

One of the best South Indian restaurant in Mumbai. This is just outside Matunga railway station East at walkable distance. Whenever you visit here make sure u carry patience with you as well. Always crowded and minimum waiting time of 15-20mins. You have to form a que to get your seat inside the restaurant. If u are visiting only 2 people then i wud suggest go inside and ask the waiter if there is place available for 2 ppl. Because they have seating table of 2 ppl as well and if that is vacant, u never know, you don't have to wait in que. Even though the table of two is not vacant, he will call once it's vacant. So don't forget to go and ask the waiter. Quality of food is great, turn around time for getting your food is good, u don't have to wait much. The menu is limited but whatever is there in menu is their speciality & damn cheap. I wanted to have Coconut Sevai, but it gets finished early so ensure to visit the place early of u want to have it. Definitely give it a try and me too giving it a try 0nce again for the coconut sevai.

Ram Ashraya is a must-visit for anyone looking for an authentic South Indian breakfast experience. The restaurant is located in a quiet corner and we were lucky to not have to wait in a long line. Our server was incredibly kind and attentive, making our dining experience even more enjoyable. We ordered a variety of dishes including the masala dosa, medu vada, Goli Bajji, pineapple sheera, filter coffee, and lime juice. Each dish was bursting with flavor and reminded me of Mangalore. The masala dosa was perfectly crispy and the potato filling was savory and delicious. The medu vada was also a standout dish with its crispy exterior and soft, fluffy interior. The Goli Bajji was a unique and flavorful snack that I highly recommend trying. The pineapple sheera was a perfect end to the meal with its sweet and tangy flavor. We also took Mangalorean Buns as parcel, which was a great decision. The buns were soft and fluffy and paired perfectly with the spicy chutney. Overall, the meal was wholesome and satisfying. The food at Ram Ashraya is authentic and truly captures the essence of South Indian cuisine. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a delicious and authentic breakfast experience.

Worth the hype. We visited this place at 5 AM in the morning to be the first ones to enter the restaurant and there were already two people ahead of us. By the time it was 5:30, the entire restaurant was full and there was a waiting line outside the restaurant. Never seen such a scenario before. Coming to food, everything is just amazing and super tasty. We ordered 1) Pudi Idli (Spicy) - 5/5 2) Thatte Idli - 5/5 3) Rasam Idli - 4/5 4) Medu Vada - 5/5 5) Ghee Roast - 5/5 6) Rava Dosa - 5/5 7) Sweet Lassi - 5/5 8) Pineapple Sheera - 4/5 9) Filter Coffee - 5/5 The service is quick, staff is good and it lived up to its hype. Will definitely visit again.

Authentic and simple good food, quick and friendly service. Food is delicious, so light on the stomach and easy to digest. We had Rava Masala Dosa, Idli Vada, Masala Dosa, Beesibili baath, pineapple sheera, filter coffee, Mysore pak, nimbu paani and paan. Plenty for 3 people and the bill was under 1000 rupees. The place is a travel back in time to eating simply. Loved it

Wait for Best South Indian Food is over here. It's probably top 3 hotel in Mumbai for authentic South Indian Food started way back in 1944. We had tried lot of dishes started with unique Goli Bajji, Banana Buns apart from that traditional Idli Vada, Neer Dosa, Puri Kurma, Rava Masala Dosa, Bisi Bele Bhath & at last Special Sweet "Black Current Sheera plus Filter Kapee". Best Taste, Good Quantity & Very much pocket friendly. Foodies it's a definite go place even more than once.

It's an old restaurant with a basic sitting area. But the food was great. We tried Mysore Masala Dosa here which tasted awesome because of the gun powder they put in it. Must visit this place once if you are nearby. And even it is pocket friendly. It just costs us 98 rs for dosa

Every time I visit this place - Ramashray - it amazes me with the ambience and simplicity in the air. No frills at all. Quality of food just doesn’t change and there is no compromise in anything around. Service is also up to the mark every time. Those who are regulars at this place - know very well about the food😊. All dishes and specialty Coffee at this place is ultimate and consistent. I have been witnessing it for over five decades.

The dosa’s, Idli, pineapple sheera, filter coffee is a must try. The place is always crowded, but the swift service in a way reduces the wait time. Overall, it is worth visiting this place if you are on a lookout for some good south India food 😋

One of the best places to have authentic South Indian food in Matunga. They have a set of food items on the menu but they all are amazing. Fresh and delicious food at an affordable price. The coconut chutney is fresh and refreshing. Sambar is also on point. Do visit if you are near Matunga. Just walking distance from the Matunga station.

One of the oldest south indian restaurant in mumbai yet has kept it's legacy maintain till now for some of the authentic South Indian food you must go here i almost tried all the food available here since visiting this place since childhood my favourite is kappi for hot bevarage, podu idli and podu dosa for brunching, you can also get Puri bhaji and also buns which are made of Banana which you will not find here in Mumbai regularly, bisebille rice for lunch along with papad yummy 🤤, and for desert pineapple sheera is best and also in drinks you must try lemonade and chass there's also option for kokam sarbat in scorching heat you can have this drink even when you are standing in queue usually evening and morning time it's bit crowded so might be getting more time in queue so that's short review from my end hope you will like it and hit like button and follow for more reviews.. Happy Brunching machaas 🤤❣️

This place is opposite to Matunga station. The food was served hot and very delicious. It is extremely economical. We had Rasam Idli, Madras Coffee, Neer Dosa and Pineapple Sheera. The place opens at around 5:30 in the mng. However they start serving dosas after 7:00am. The total bill came upto 200/- The place is kept very clean. A must visit for traditional south indian breakfast.

An authentic South Indian restaurant in Matunga . I always visit this restaurant when I am in Mumbai. Do note that the waiting time during weekends for breakfast can be 15-30 mins. But the queue moves pretty quick. Service and staff are great here. Coming to the food, all the items here are delicious. I would recommend the following: 1) Pudi idli 2) goli bhajji 3) Ullundu dosa with ghee 4) idli vada There were other sweets as well but I cannot comment as I did not try it.

Authentic South Indian Food with no fuss. On Saturday/Sunday/ Holidays expect waiting of 15-30mins. Being a South Indian restaurant located in Matunga, no description required for food available. Dosas, Idli Vada, South Indian meal & various sweets made in Ghee. Do try Neer Dosa. 🅿️ parking: There is a pay n park at Matunga central station.

If one had to describe Ram Ashraya in one word then it has to be "outstanding" and nothing less. So if you wanna have your breakfast around 8 am, make sure you reach there at 7 am because there is always a huge queue to get a table. There's a separate counter where you can place your parcel/take away orders. The food is outstanding. My favourite among all is the rasam Vada, rava idli, pineapple Sheera, podi dosa, podi idli and filter coffee. They even serve various sweets like modak, peda, Mysore Pak etc. The nimbu Pani is also fantastic.

Matunga, my haven for South Indian cravings, recently led me to the legendary Ram Ashraya. Stepping inside felt like a trip back in time, with the walls adorned with chalk-drawn menus and old-school wooden chairs whispering tales of countless satisfied palates. The air buzzed with a familiar, comforting warmth, a testament to this restaurant's enduring charm. My craving for authenticity led me to the classic Medu Vada, and oh, what a revelation it was! The crispy exterior gave way to a fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth interior, bursting with the subtle flavors of lentils. Each bite was a perfect symphony of texture and taste, a true ode to Udipi cuisine. And what better accompaniment to a Vada than a steaming cup of filter coffee? Ram Ashraya's brew was strong, aromatic, and, I confess, a tad too sweet for my liking. But here's the beauty – the staff, as sweet and welcoming as the coffee itself, readily adjusted the sweetness to my preference. This simple gesture spoke volumes about their dedication to customer satisfaction. As I savored my coffee, I observed a delightful scene. Guests, young and old, families and friends, all united by the love for Ram Ashraya's timeless flavors. The smiles, the chatter, the aroma – it was a symphony of pure culinary joy. Verdict: 5 out of 5 stars!

I would personally recommend this amazing and one of the oldest gem in mumbai. If you're looking to have some delicious South Indian breakfast then this is your go-to place! We had ordered for Podi idli (10/10) masala dosa - (9/10) medu wada (10/10) banana fritter (8/10). We also had filter coffee and tasted the lemon juice - it was just like our the ones outside railway station lemon juice stalls.

One of the best south Indian restaurant... I recently dined at the South Indian restaurant, and it was an absolute culinary delight! The menu offered a diverse range of authentic South Indian dishes that left my taste buds in awe. To start, the dosas were outstanding – crispy on the outside and perfectly soft on the inside. The coconut chutney and sambar that accompanied them were bursting with flavor. The service was impeccable, and the ambiance had a cozy, inviting feel. I highly recommend this South Indian restaurant for anyone seeking an authentic and memorable culinary experience.

If you are looking for The best south indian food you should cisit this place in Mumbai. I tried almosf all the special dishes. From this hotel. Heard alot about this place as well. You get a vibe of old vintage kind of ambiance. Where there is always a queue to sit inside the hotel and eat. No matter what time it is. You will find this place house full. And the rates are very reasonable. I have tried. Butter idli, gunpowder idli, Mendu wada with rassam, gun powder dosa, Mysor masala dosa is must try item and few other things. Which were really tasty. At the end the most famous filter coffee was worth it. And in desert the pineapple sheeram was too pure. For now days.

The right word to describe is AUTHENTIC! Genuinely South Indian...! 7600 kilometer distance doesn't limit them from bringing the FLAVOR of Mom's kitchen back home! The Authenticity is maintained not only in the food menu and the taste, but also in the ambience, hygiene and most importantly the friendly service. I give 5 STARS with complete satisfaction and would ask them to keep up the magic, with the touch of homeliness, forever as how it is now! Thanks!

My favourite breakfast place has a new outlet now in matunga itself. The previous restaurant was small and always had a waiting line. The new one is spacious and airy and right in front of the old one. Both outlets are right outside the central matunga station. The food is delicious. Rava dosa is my favourite which is served on banana leaf with chutney and sambar. I love their coffee. Shira dosa is the ultimate dessert here. Butter idle and podi idle are yum too but they serve only a single piece of it. They have a pan at the billing counter which is for Rs 7. This new outlet is very clean and the staff is more kind. Ambience wise I love their lalbaug branch.

We had podi idli, idli, maysore dosa, rasam vada, pineapple Shira and kaju pineapple sweet all of it was delicious specially the podi idli. Dal vada was too crisp. Its quite a famous outlet so you might have to stand in line. No dedicated parking its also very close to the matunga railway station so finding parking space could be difficult.

The food was so delicious 😋, I love South Indian food for breakfast it is the best healthy and delicious. The sambar and chutney were fresh and nice . Service was quick and sweet. They could work a bit on their ambience. Ghee Mysore masala dosa is something I would recommend , best thing I've ever tried . Their filter coffee was a classic too. The roads are usually very busy so the parking is really hard to get . Mornings are very busy usually there is a 10-15 minutes wait which is so much worth it .

Best South Indian food! Staff is continuously running here and there, when asked for something they say it is not available and run away immediately. We call them again and ask for something else, they again say it is not available and run away immediately. This keeps on happening usually at late hours. They should atleast be courteous to help customers by telling what is available instead of keep on running here and there, this will save both of our time and the customer does not get frustrated. Please work on teaching your staff how to help customers instead of just running here and there..

Always a good idea for any time of the day meal. The options are here not as varied as other udipi restaurants but it's very authentic, quality is homelike and taste is uncompromising! If you're a coffee person then filter coffee is a must try! What i loved the most about this place is its serving cold beverages in glass bottles. Not plastic nor paper just glass! This is where all restaurants should be headed!

Visited Aug 2021. I've been to all the South Indian restaurants in Matunga/Kings Circle. Frankly there's not much difference between Anand Bhavan, Mysore Cafe, Madras Cafe, Amba Bhavan and this place. Had Mysore Masala Dosa and coffee, cost Rs 124. The Dosa was crisp, the batata bhaji and Mysore masala were quite tasty. The coffee wasn't too good, the coffee at Anand Bhavan is way better. The sambar was a bit watery and sweet. Maybe I'm nitpicking but - they only give you one spoon with a order, becomes a bit difficult to eat, for me at least. Seating is a bit cramped. All in all I would prefer to go to Anand Bhavan or Mysore Cafe.

This is one of the best breakfast place I have been to so far! South Indian food has my heart and this place has been on top of my list since I know about this. The dishes that you must try here: Ghee rava masala dosa, Podi Idli, filter coffee, mendu vada and pineapple shera ( some people think of avoiding this, but it's actually too good). A little queue in the morning but the food that you have here, makes you feel that every minute waited here is actually worth it !

Ramashraya.. It's a new outlet opposite to old one.. and they promise to serve you just amazing food like Old Ramashraya, but somewhere i feel the taste do not reach the level.. Yes they do have amazing atmosphere, the service is as great as the old one,and you also don't need to stand in que for too long even in weekends.. But the taste i personally felt was not that great.. The cost is also quite high, like the idlis are served at 55/- per plate and rava masala dosa for 90/-.. One can try for once, but those who have tasted the old Ramashraya, they might not like the food that much..

South Indian breakfast of course it has to be Rama Ashraya. Such a small place but what tasty food. This time we had something different here called bun puris. Yes you heard it right and tell you what it was very tasty mildly sweet. Second rank I will give to Mysore masala dosa. Also it is adequately sized so don’t worry on finishing it. The place is always crowded but extremely well managed. You eat the food and get out ha ha. It does not take more than 10 minutes for your turn as the same is managed very well. Matunga has lot of South Indian food joints but I will give best to this place for the taste alone.

One of the best south indian eatery located in Matunga East and the only place to have an early breakfast. Simply loved it because of its authentic taste and budget friendliness. Podi idli, podi upma and sheera is a must have. They open doors at dot 6am, limited menu till 7. Dosas are served post 7am. We had a full breakfast with the bill turning around 500rs.

Amazing place for South Indian food lovers. We have tried some of their dishes and all were very good. Benne Masala Dosa is a must-try, the taste of white butter was really yum. Apart from this, Medu Vada, Neer Dosa, Banglore Masala Dosa, Coffee, Lassi and a variety of sweets (especially Mysore Pak) all were exceptional.

Ticked off a breakfast bucket list long over due: Ram Ashraya🤤 Must begin with a pro-tip: they open at 5:00am and to get the bestsellers you must do early morning. Listed the must haves (which was everything I ate) 😍😍 1. Pineapple Seera - order this first!!! 2. Podi idli 3. Ghee podi dosa 3. Medu vada 4. Butter idli 5. Filter coffee (the perfect strong & sweet)

We had coffee, Medu Wada, Idli Wada, and Idli Sambar. Extremely affordable costs for hot, fresh portions. Although it's always crowded, waiting doesn't take too long. Furthermore, it's not far from Matunga Railway Station. Please come by!
