If you are into paintings and modern art this place is a heaven. The store sells some outstanding prints so I will say it is a must buy. I’m case you wish to learn how to light and display paintings then also this is such a masterclass. The staff is extremely friendly and the shop is worth spending time in. I would recommend it for everyone. You need to maintain silence as the place has options for people to study art as well as view in peace

Very silent, like a library. Wonderful art as well. But there were some things I couldn't comprehend, and some that didn't make a lot of sense. Art is art, anyway. Liked the place!

Walking Through Soul City - Sudhir Patwardhan This was an amazing display of art work. Loved the detailing in every painting. Enjoyed each piece of art minutely. A must visit exhibition. Loved the different characters portrayed in each frame. Each one was unique. Each one has an identity. They weren't simply human beings. And every painting evoked thoughts in my head and created conversation.

A beautiful gallery just opposite Regal cinema at Colaba. Entrance fee is very reasonable at Rs20 for Indians. They regularly change their display, maybe once a month. They currently have on display, the 'LIFE OF MAHATMA GANDHI'. The displays comprise of paintings, collectables, daily use items, broken negatives on the MAHATMA. Don't miss the display depicting the Dandi March. They have a projector that projects the waves on a wall, and they have made a sea shore with salt. His staff stands straight on the sea shore. And the sound of the waves rises in the background. JUST SPECTACULAR. Another exhibit depicts a loom and threads flowing on the ground and circling alphabets that form a sentence. VERY MOVING AND TOUCHING. You can take photographs, but without a flash and only from a mobile.

So, good luck finding this place thanks to the teeny-tiny sign hiding behind a car. Once I was there, after an hour-long trip and a confusing walk, I was told it was closed. No notice on their website or Google. Never going there again.

Museum was closed due to ongoing renovations on Dec 28, 2022. Security guard said it would take a minimum of 15 more days before the gallery opens again. Please do keep closures updated on Google Maps so visitors can plan accordingly!

Unarguably the most happening place as far as modern art is concerned. It's located opp the museum. This multiple storey art gallery displays the most contemporary art exhibits of our times. The presentation and ambience is most captivating. The ticket cost is RS. 20/- per person. The place is centrally air-conditioned and very stylish. A must visit for modern art buffs.

The National Gallery of Modern Art is to ensure quality and to set and maintain standards of excellence. One of the most beautiful spaces in Mumbai. The exhibitions at this museum are wonderfully curated. Each time I have visited, I have learnt something new about an artist or a movement, each of them making a real impact on my world view. Don't miss out on going all the way to the top floor with its domed ceiling for the full experience. As a cherry on top, check out the museum shop that sells large prints for not more that ₹70-80

I spent a winter afternoon strolling through the galleries at NGMA. There are a number of galleries with varied exhibitions. The permanent gallery features paintings by Raja Ravi Verma, Rabindranath Tagore, Amrita Sher Gil etc. Each piece of art is a visual delight while a few give points to ponder. Two temporary exhibits that stand out in my mind are Satyajit Ray & Upendra Maharathi. I didn't know much about the late Mr. Ray; so it was an education for me. & the late Mr. Maharathi's works are stunning! NGMA has a parking outside & is huge; so wear comfortable shoes & be ready to walk a lot

Beautiful gallery of modern art but it's quite small in size (I've expected way bigger gallery). Clean, well maintained. Collection well curated. Entrance 20 rs for Indians, 500 rs for foreigners (if u have OCI card than 20 rs entrance). There's available cafeteria with extremely affordable prices (omelette 50 rs, pav 20 rs, black coffee 30 rs) Washroom available.

National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai was opened to the public in 1996. It hosts various exhibitions and art collections of famous artists, sculptors and different civilizations. It is situated in the Cowasji Jehangir Hall, near Regal Cinema in Colaba. The idea of a National art gallery was first mooted in 1949,[by whom?] and further developed by Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru and Maulana Azad, bureaucrats such as Humayun Kabir and the local art community. Vice-president Dr. S.Radhakrishnan formally inaugurated the NGMA in the presence of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and artists and art lovers of the city on 29 March 1954. The choice of Jaipur House, one of the premier edifices of Lutyens’ Delhi, signified the envisaged high profile of the institution. Designed by Sir Arthur Blomfield, as a residence for the Maharaja of Jaipur, the butterfly-shaped building with a central dome was built in 1936. It was styled after a concept of the Central Hexagon visualised by Sir Edwin Lutyens. It was Lutyens, along with Herbert Baker, who visualized and gave shape to the new capital in Delhi. Along with buildings designed for other princely potentates like Bikaner and Hyderabad, Jaipur House girded the India Gate circle.

Nice and cozy place. Been here in February 2009, one painting I can't still forget. Modern artist, don't remember the name. Some psychedelic picnic or something. View from above. People hanging on the lawn, some sitting some laying on a mat. Some objects also on the mat - don't remember exactly, maybe some food, maybe some other stuff. One of the people smoking a cigarette, a classic transparent plastic lighter (green or yellow?) is laying on the mat near the smoking person. Colors are psychedelic, objects seem glowing like you are tripping on mushrooms or acid. If someone could tell me what is the author or painting or what author it can be look like. I tried to ask writing email directly on the gallery email, but they didn't tell.

The idea of a National art gallery was first mooted in 1949, and further developed by Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru and Maulana Azad, bureaucrats such as Humayun Kabir and the local art community. NGMA's inauguration was marked by an exhibition of sculptures. Prominent sculptors of the time including Debi Prasad Roy Chowdhury, Ramkinkar Baij, Sankho Chaudhuri, Dhanraj Bhagat, Sarbari Roy Chowdhury and others had participated. The show was prepared by NGMA's first curator Herman Goetz. A noted German art historian, Goetz had earlier been responsible for setting up the Baroda Museum. The Gallery is run and administered as a subordinate office to the Department of Culture, Government of India, and showcases the changing art forms through the passage of the last hundred and fifty years starting from about 1857 in the field of Visual art and Plastic arts.

This is unarguably the best place to visit in terms of Modern art. The art works exhibited here by famous artists will make you speechless. There is constant change in the arts displayed here. The time I visited this place the an exhibition named 'Inner Resonance' was going on, which showcased the works done by Mr. S.G.Vasudev, which included paintings, drawings, copper etchings and tapestry. The ticket price here is very cheap and you can spend as much time Nas you want and there is also a small souvenir shop selling books related to art, copy of paintings and cups. If you ever go to Mumbai, you should definitely visit this place.

I attended a panel event hosted by Avid Learning Group with AI and art. Really wonderful panel...but the space was poorly organized because of the lighting, seating arrangement, and the air conditioner in the room. Wish the NGMA could make some improvements. Feels very much like entering 1980s - government bureaucratic, heavy, sorrowful and dense and authoritarian space.

The first modern art museum of India established by the visionary leader Jawaharlal Nehru. Photography is strictly prohibited but i did see many take pics nonetheless 😕

Their website (on ‘Current Status’) does mention that it is closed for floor maintenance until next year (2024) sometime. Don’t make a special journey unless you want to see Textiles only and prepared to pay 500 rupees.

A wonderful space dedicated to art in the heart of Fort, the building itself is lovely to look at, let alone the substantial permanent collection. My first post pandemic visit on the last day of an extensive exhibition entitled Sutr Santati featuring some clever works showcasing the versatility of textiles. Tucked away in between floors, an installation of embroidered "bricks" with its poignant history as part of the artist's childhood home and stories caught my eye. Rabindranath Tagore's Kabuliwala rendered in kantha was a thing of beauty.

The gallery building is a fine pre-independence architecture in SOBO where modern art and various other forms of exhibitions are held. Entry fee to the building is very nominal where you can enter and explore different facets of art forms.

It was a pleasure and a privilege to visit this exhibition and get an opportunity to see this well curated show of Textiles . The highlight was the personalized guided tour by the curating team who literally wove in each narrative as delicately as the exhibit itself. Always looking forward to the next show at NGMA
