The
Steps
of
Santiago
or
also
known
as
San
Diego,
was
a
space
of
orchards
and
terraces
not
long
ago.
These
San
Diego
Steps
owed
their
name
to
the
convent
that
was
located
in
that
area.
The
small
surviving
chapel
that
still
stands
in
place,
on
the
corner
of
the
PĂłlvora
Garden
(where
the
old
factory
was)
was
the
first
step
of
the
Via
Crucis
procession.
It
has
been
here
since
the
beginning
of
the
Reconquista
and
it
is
said
that
it
was
the
first
hermitage
dedicated
to
San
Miguel.
Later
it
was
used
by
the
knights
of
the
Order
of
Santiago,
who
met
there,
as
attested
by
the
Cross
that
is
located
in
the
enclosure
a
few
meters
from
the
Front.
This
small
temple
is
considered
a
Mudejar
jewel
in
the
Region.

Before
beginning
the
study
of
the
church
of
Santiago,
it
is
worth
clarifying
a
historical
error
that
has
persisted
for
centuries
regarding
its
name.
Los
Pasos
de
Santiago
never
existed
although
currently,
and
for
years,
the
Pasos
de
Santiago
street
has
existed.
Historically
we
can
only
talk
about
the
Steps
of
the
Hermitage
of
San
Diego.
The
'Alcantarinos',
barefoot
Franciscans,
built
the
hermitage
and
convent
of
San
Diego
in
1598,
in
the
middle
of
the
Murcian
orchard.
Later
they
built
the
steps
of
a
Via
Crucis,
from
their
convent
to
the
only
step
that
is
preserved
today,
at
the
confluence
of
Acisclo
DĂaz
streets
with
Isaac
Albéniz,
and
Pasos
de
Santiago.
The
church
of
Santiago
outside
the
walls,
the
oldest
in
the
city
of
Murcia,
was
built
'two
crossbow
shots'
from
the
Muslim
city
wall
-
about
four
hundred
meters
-.
Various
theories
have
been
formulated
to
justify
its
construction
so
close
to
the
old
walls.
1.
Fuentes
y
Ponte
states
that
it
was
built
in
the
same
place
where
the
Royal
Camp
of
the
Knights
of
Santiago
was
installed,
of
which
the
apostle
was
patron.
He
formulates
a
second
theory:
in
the
same
place,
where
the
church
of
Santiago
is,
there
was
previously
the
parish
of
San
Miguel,
one
of
the
oldest
in
Murcia.
2.
MartĂnez
Tornel
stated
that
on
the
site
where
the
Santiago
hermitage
was
built
there
was
previously
the
old
temple
that
belonged
to
the
Arrixaca
de
los
Cristianos
neighborhood,
a
neighborhood
that
currently
includes
the
parishes
of
San
Andrés,
San
AntolĂn
and
San
Miguel.
In
Cantiga
169
by
Alfonso
X.
(Spanish
version
by
Professor
Sobejano
Alcayna).
The
king
offered
himself
as
a
witness
to
the
events
he
recounts.
Its
reading
is
very
illustrative
to
know
the
time
and
the
content
of
the
events
that
are
narrated:
"How
Santa
MarĂa
protected
her
church
that
is
in
Arrreixaca
de
Murcia,
which
the
Moors
wanted
to
destroy
and
did
not
do
so."
I
include
this
information
in
my
review,
which
is
part
of
a
report
published
in
the
newspaper
La
OpiniĂłn
of
Murcia
and
which
makes
it
clear
that
this
is
the
Church
of
Santiago.
