After a temporary closure, the sanctuary is fully open again and under new management: Uganda Wildlife Authority and Ziwa Rhino & Wildlife Ranches Ltd. Tracking rhinos at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary - Uganda en route to Murchison Falls, Masindi or Hoima - is one of Uganda's most popular tourist attractions. Tracking the rhinos is a gentle activity that takes between 1 and 2.5 hours. Thank you to the Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers Khalid and Jackson who took me on a walking safari to track the rhinos 🦏🦏🦏. They are so passionate about these prehistoric-looking creatures! Their curiosity was contagious. I travelled to see the Southern White Rhinos but it was wonderful to hear new birds (White-crested Turaco) and to learn about the wide variety of species that are thriving thanks to the land's status as a sanctuary. You may also see Uganda kob, warthogs, bushbuck, duiker, hippos, crocodiles and possibly even a sitatunga. Ziwa has 350 bird species. I could imagine staying at Ziwa for two or three nights. In addition to the rhino tracking, you can enjoy nature walks, bird-watching, float out into the swamp in search of the Shoebills, take a night walk ... or simply enjoy being in the bush. 2021 entry prices for adults (over 13 years) are: Foreign non-resident (international tourist) 50 USD; East African resident 40 USD; Ugandan Citizen 30k UGX. 2021 prices for children (aged 6 to 12) are: Foreign non-resident (international tourist) 25 USD; East African resident 20 USD; Ugandan Citizen 10k UGX. On-site accommodation starts at $12 a night for camping ('bed only') rising to $35 per night (full board). Other options include dormitory, budget rooms and a guesthouse. It is all quite basic and is currently being refurbished. I only did a day visit; didn't stay overnight. Accommodation prices depend on whether you have breakfast only, full meals plan etc. (Ugandans pay half price on accommodation; expats and East Africans pay advertised rates). Upmarket accommodation is a few km away at Amuka Lodge. #rhinos #rhinoceros #wildlife #visituganda #diaryofamuzungu #travelblogger #EastAfricaTravelDirectory

We had an excellent time at the Ziwa Rhino Wildlife Ranch. We (pretty last minute) decided to stay the night here and was the best choice to make. They were really accommodating (even while we were arriving late) to help us get settled in and make us dinner. The room was really pretty and cozy with ample warm water in the shower. Unfortunately we didn't see a shoebill in the morning (50/50% change), but plenty of Rhinos. They even came up in the evening to sleep on the grass in front of the lodge. Definitely recommend this.

I loved every moment spent here, so informative and such a beautiful spot to see these gorgeous white rhinos! The staff were amazing and kind and I would highly recommend anyone visiting Uganda to go out of their way to visit this place! (Went in Sept 2019)

This place is fantastic and great to see the Rhino. Also learn how the Rhino behave and when/how they get stress following by prepare to attract. Is a great day out, but I would strongly suggest to arrive and visit in morning between 8-10am, and no need to stay there.

Fantastic experience with the Rhino 🦏 We loved the walk. I would not recommend the shoebill experience as there is rubbish all over the area, oil on the swap water and plastic bottles in the water. We were also told the construction of the bridge has scared the local wildlife (hence not a 5⭐️ experience)

Seeing the real rhinos with horns still on and baby was so emotional even teared for luck on better words. Visiting this sanctuary not only make you happy but you contribute to conservation efforts of the only Reming to the only endangered and endangered

We camped in the camping area. It was a good space. There was a table and covered area for cooking. Very quiet. Good shower and toilet facilities. Only slight issue was the lights on the covered area that were shining in our tent screens.

Just got back from Uganda and had the pleasure of staying here. Absolutely love what they are doing for conservation efforts for reintroducing rhinos into the national parks. You have to give the Rangers credit as they do 24 hour shifts to protect the Rhinos. Out there by themselves in all weather. It was a great experience and I'm happy to hear they're making a positive impact. The accommodations were great, restaurant was also great. Really nice little pool to cool off in. Staff were lovely. Would love to visit again

Best time to come is during corona. Due to the fact that almost no one is there. The Rhinos dont go deep into the bush when they dont have people nagging them all day, we saw all 70 something rhinos including the babes. Super cool place was a lot of fun.

You got to go here! The staff are wonderful, the restaurant was good and most importantly the rhinos were amazing. Our guide Robert, was awesome. Super knowledgeable, friendly and so passionate about educating us on rhino conservation. If I had known ahead of time, I would have stayed the night at the accommodation there. Loved this place.

Wow, wow, wow, easily a 5⭐️experience. Such a wonderful experience seeing one of the big 5 out in the wild. Just a couple of hours from Kampala, Ziwa offers a number of activities out in the wild such a game drives & rhino tracking by foot. Established in 2005 to re-introduce Southern White Rhinos in the wild, the sanctuary is the only place in the country, where one can observe these endangered creatures in the wild. They now have up to 38 rhinos at the ranch. The staff and guides are friendly and very professional. Highly recommended experience.

We spent a great time visiting Ziwa Rhino Santuary. Was a nice experience to see Rhinos and the walking was really nice. The Rangers do a explanation about them. We hope they don’t need to protect them from pochers ans we hope they could be reintroduced in the wild soon.

It’s the only place in Uganda to sight the southern white rhinos. It’s a sanctuary that is worth a visit to see one of the big fives of Africa. However the service is slow as it may take a lot of time to finish the tour if your in a rush.

It’s a beautiful experience being that close to the white rhinos. We tried to contact the sanctuary twice to get some information about accommodation and prices to get in and they didn’t answer until the day we visited. We figured out that the gate opens at 8am and you need to rent a car to get inside the park for 20$ (apart the entry fee 50$) or arrange one from outside (in our case from Masindi). Once in the reception, a guide will help you to track some rhinos by foot. Our guide was not very motivated and after seeing two rhinos in the first 15’ seemed to be enough. Because we asked to continue walking and look for more it was possible to make the experience a bit more interesting. It was finisghed around 10am.

If you have ever seen rhinos anywhere and you are on a budget, don't come. Yes, the guides were brilliant. But after having spent 2 weeks in Uganda, having been on countless game drives and other activities (and so being able to make comparisons), I have to say that it is not worth the money. We were taken to the mother and baby and basically that was it. Again as with the lodge, this is management issue, they have grown too comfortable.

Throughout my previous 4 months in East Africa I hadn't been opportuned to see Rhinos in the parks I visited. Ziwa is perfect for this. The Ranger takes you to where you can watch the White Rhinos at close proximity. It's really cool and humbling to watch these beauties do their thing graze, walk around and chill

This an amazing, must-see place. I first stumbled upon Ziwa in Jan 2018 and insisted that we stop. We spent 7 wonderful hours there. We were able to -safely - get so close to these magnificent creatures - it was a life-changing experience. 100% recommended. Then I had the opportunity to return two months later with my wife, and it was just as amazing. The sanctuary and its Rangers are doing such a fantastic job they absolutely deserve our support. Thank you Ziwa.

Location-164 km from kampala Fee-40 usd or 50 usd per foreign nationals Things to do- rhino tracking. Rangers will take you a walk in the wild to watch rhinos in wild. Only place where u can see rhinos. Its once a life time experience Food- there is a restaurant in the park. Food is not that bad but manageable. More than food i like the place where we sat to eat. One can adopt a new born rhino also in auction n the park will take of them you can choose whatever name u want. We watch one named OBAMA. All in all a mist visit place.

Decent accommodation, but a bit expensive for what it is ($80 per night). Activities on offer are also very expensive for what they are. Advantages: - Our room and bathroom were very clean. - The staff from the lodge's restaurant were kind and helpful. Disadvantages: - Contrary to what the website of the lodge says, there was no WiFi or hot water when we stayed there. The lady at the front desk apologized for this but didn't make any commercial gesture to make it up for it. - We signed up for two treks (one to see the rhinos, one to see the shoebills) and yet, we ended up driving - with our own car and fuel - more than walking (more than 30 km of driving in the case of the shoebill trek), under the guidance of a ranger who was very patronizing (was it because my friend and I are two young women?), who wanted to keep the animal-seeing as short as possible, and who explicitly and awkwardly asked us to tip the trackers he works with, in addition to what we had already paid at the lodge for the treks. This was the most disappointing part...

The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is really a great place to see rhinos in a natural setting in Uganda after they got extic in the 1980s. The sanctuary is home to over 37 rhinos, and it's also an important conservation area for other wildlife, like antelope, and birds. While here here you can embark on a walking tour, a boat trip in search of the shoebill and many other birds or even a game drive through the sanctuary, and learn about the rhinos and their conservation efforts. It is a great place to visit for anyone interested in wildlife and nature.

Besides the Rhinos, food and accommodation were very very bad. The customer care of the attendants was so so bad. At some point the lady cashier backed at me over the phone for requesting for my receipt after 2 weeks of effecting payment. Communication is very poor. I think management of this place needs to be revised. they don't care whatsoever about communication from clients or making their clients feel comfortable.

This was a great experience. I am always nervous to visit these so called wildlife ranches / sanctuaries because they are normally about exploiting animals. I believe this place is an exception. You will track the rhinos on foot and will be able to get quite close to them, but not close enough to disturb them. Each of them has an armed guard with shoot to kill permission 24/7. A sad world we live in. You will have a limited time to observe the rhinos and then time to ask questions from the ranger. There is a nice restaurant on site with vegetarian options. If you are vegan, you will have a bit of explaining to do, but the staff is friendly and chef came to talk to us. Our food was delicious.

One of the highlights of our trip to Uganda! The Zziwa Rhino Sanctuary is doing a fantastic job in wild-life conservation by protecting these animals and provide them with a space environment so they can reproduce. All the staff is incredibly professional, very welcoming and make you feel safe when walking around the park. Having the experience of trekking rhinos on foot is something I recommend to anyone traveling to Uganda!

A unique place to visit Rhinos in their wildlife. The team at Ziwa is doing its best to protect Rhinos there, monitoring Rhinos every moment to keep them safe from poachers and diseases. These animals are so beautiful, safe and calm. Do not miss the chance to visit them. I had a chance to see a Rhino mother feeding her baby.

Discussed my solo visit with Maria via whatsapp prior to arrival indicating that I'd be walking down from the nearby city and arriving at the front gate for rhino trekking as I wanted to confirm the price for the day's activities. The cost was outlined as $50 ($20 for park entry, $30 for trekking) and thought we were set. After arriving at the specified time, I was then told I'd have to take Bodas to the reception which is about 3 km away but they were trying to charge 10,000-20,000 shilling (for one way) at a point I didn't even want to negotiate with them. For anyone who has taken bodas in Uganda, you can approximate average price as 500 shilling/km typically. Anticipate to add an extra 20-30% of your visit if you're not traveling with a tour company or self-driving as the Bodas will aim to extort you for the last few kilometers. Ziwa management could have made this more clear when I stated exactly when and how I was arriving given that it's a significant cost. I'm sure the Rhino's are great, but go see them on safari or stay self-driving.

A dream of a place in every way. It’s a really professional and serious wildlife conservancy, full of passionate and knowledgeable staff who care so much about protecting the rhinos and giving clients a great experience. From helping us with logistics beforehand (thanks so much to Saleem the awesome manager) to their welcome the minute we arrived, the delicious food, the unbelievably cool rhino tracking experience we had, everything was 5*. There were rhinos around the dining area late at night was was so so cool, and earlier in the evening there were warthogs and lots of other animals so close by. The rhinos were even there for breakfast in the morning! Ziwa was one of the highlights of our month long Uganda trip.

The animals are used to be surrounded on a distance by humans, nevertheless it remains a magnificent experience to be so close to these majestic animals on foot. Given the history of this animal in Uganda, I can only have respect for the team that takes care of the Rhinos. Great location for a stopover in between Kampala and Murchison Falls NP.

The only place to see Rhinos in Uganda. Couldn't believe how close they were. At night they come right up to camp so staying a night is worth it. Rooms were quite comfortable and the food offered at the restaurant was good. $50 US for the permit can be a bit steep but it's going to the sanctuary to help further protect the animals so it's money well spent.

  • 4/5 Josephine N. 4 years ago on Google
The sanctuary is quite beautiful for an outdoor adventure. Seeing the Rhino's was a whole new experience. They're majestic animals.Overall the experience is worth it.However the trekking only lasts an hour and after that theres not much to do.The guides are friendly and the food is good, although the portions are quite small especially after you trek through the bush.Haha! The bathroom hygiene needs to be worked on.The only way to have fun is to make this a group activity.Carry your own music players and mats.Or do this on your way to another activity up North.

Amazing place. The rhino tracking is a must-do activity for any visitor here. We got to see three different rhino families. The walk is very easy and I'd say even people not so good on foot could easily manage. We stopped for a night on our way from Kampala to Murchison Falls and spent the night at the camping grounds inside (10 USD per person). The camping grounds are beautiful and well-kept, and warthogs, various antelopes and sometimes even rhinos walk around the camping area.
