I have been coming here for a very long time, almost since they opened up. It used to be one of my favorite breweries, sadly not anymore. The atmosphere has definitely changed, and not for the better. Most of the staff are still friendly and accommodating, but not all them. It's also getting easier to find a seat, since they are not as popular as they used to be. They still have a good selection of regular beers and also seasonal beers. You can buy most beers to take home in a 64oz. growler or in a 32oz. crowler, you just pick your beer and they'll bottle it for you on the spot. They don't sell food but you can order from some of the local places and have it delivered. Dan's Pizza has a free delivery service to Alter Brewing. If you're looking for a place to host a special event, they got you covered. They have a small facility in the front tap room and a huge barrel room in back of the brewery.

The pours seem to have gotten smaller and the prices higher. The IPA is excellent but when you're paying $9 after tip for less beer it feels like short term profits over of long term relationships. Nice environment in an out-of-the-way industrial park. They have games, high-top community style tables and a designated area for larger groups. It seems to be very popular with the Gen X crowd. The beer on the whole is consistently smooth and easy to drink; nothing too risky, hoppy, tart, or high AVB - also good selection and helpful, people-centered service

Good spot to eat and drink! I really liked the beers I had, Against the Currant and Cukezilla vs Limekong. To eat, I had the blackened cod sandwich with fries. The fries are nothing to write home about but fine. The fish itself was great: flavorful and a good kick from the spice. However, the flavor was lost in the other ingredients—lettuce, tomato, and onion. I would have appreciated a better combination to highlight the fish, but overall it was a nice experience. Friendly and helpful staff and they seemed well staffed.

Good brewery with some very good beers. Nice open space to enjoy a beer with friends and family both inside and outside. Adding a food truck would make this the perfect spot!

We had our wedding reception in the Barrel Room at the Downers Grove location in September. Lisa was amazing to work with from start to finish! She was responsive to my hundreds of emails (almost not kidding) and always available when I would reach out to look at the space. She helped me work out my vision for the space, was present during our rehearsal to make sure the initial setup was what I wanted and then was around the entire day of our wedding to make sure things went smoothly. We loved Alter before our wedding, but she and the staff are definitely a reason we will keep coming back and recommending events being held there! Also, not to leave out how awesome the beer is.

We worked with Lisa on an after party for our children's baptism- we couldn't have been happier with how it turned out! We used their barrel room and it was beautiful! The staff was extremely attentive and the beer was delicious! Lisa was so easy to work with, great communication, and you could tell she wanted everything to be the way we requested it. Highly recommend for any event you are thinking of!!!

We love the beers here and staff are always super friendly. Also, for private parties the Barrel Room is a local hidden gem! We hosted our son’s first birthday here with over 100 guests and Lisa made everything super easy and fun to plan. Lots of flexibility to bring in our own food vendors and a children’s soft play rental. Alter is the best!

I love that they partnered with the DG library a bunch of years back. I hope whoever the owner is giving consideration to renewing that partnership. In all honesty, I walked into this brewery because of DGPL. Drank literally around one hundred 6-packs since then. Put a few bricks in the new brewery... Hoping you listen.

We held our son and daughter-in-law's wedding celebration in the barrel room. Amy helped us get the room set up just the way we wanted and the night went off without a hitch. The beer was delicious, the space is charming. All in all, just a wonderful night. Thank you Alter, for making our party so special.

A few of my favorite beers here (Hopular Kid and Alterior Motive and Center Line). Good stuff. I still wish there was better parking and a more comfortable space to chill though...

Beer is incredibly average IMO. Hate to say it but locally most other craft breweries beat the taste of their IPAs and stouts (skeleton, solemn oath, noon whistle, moar). It’s not hard for me to get here but I can’t be bothered

Had a work party in the back room - very spacious and cool looking room. Beer was good. Only downside is the parking situation.

Nice space. Decent atmosphere. Not enough beer selection (10 on tap when I was there) Also it's quite expensive. $25 for a baked soft pretzel appetizer.

Great beer but you NEED to have a changing pad in both restrooms! We’re a young family in the area and this is the first brewery in the area (we’ve been to 100+ breweries together) that doesn’t have one!

Always great beers .... wish that they weren't so IPA heavy on their selections.

I just had my first beer at Goldfinger’s - a Bock which took me instantly back to northern Bavaria, where I was stationed courtesy of Uncle Sam. Absolutely delicious. Mensch, das Bier hat gut Geschmack!!

This place in contrast with other breweries on Rogers and downtown Downers Grove offers a schedule that is pretty decent for Saturday nights and beers that are tailored to please the IPA fans. I love the fact that they offer breadsticks, but did not appreciate that price and also I missed live music here.

Came here for the first time on the afternoon of Saturday, December 18, 2021 and wondered why I didn’t come here sooner. The place was clean, energetic, and fun. The bartender Amy was amazing- very friendly, energetic, and knew the beer list very well. I got two beer flights, each with four beers, and all of them were very good to excellent. Know that the beer flights don’t have a fixed price, rather each beer has its own price for the flight and was reasonable given the high quality. My favorite was the ‘Power Off’ barrel aged stout which I highly recommend- made well for the style and one worthy to sip and enjoy. They sell beer in growlers, crowlers, bottles and cans- I strongly recommend to buy and take home! The brewery is in an industrial park which is clean and has plenty of spaces in the parking lot. I will definitely return here next time I’m in the area. A must go place!
