Beautiful ancient Jain temple in Lakkundi (Basadi) around 12 kms from Gadag. Quite well preserved, managed and maintained temple and surroundings. It is located just next to Archaeological Museum of Lakkundi. Though there was nobody guarding Jinalaya, felt secure to park car along the museum which had a guard placed. Also there was no entrance fee for the temple but I guess the fee was included with entry fee of the museum. Museum had quite nice exhibits with explanation to understand the classification of the main types of architecture and carvings etc. They also had a room where scores of sculptures/ some broken ones were being restored. The temple, being in stone and in open must be hot during summers in afternoon to walk barefoot. The architecture includes flat sloping roof in the front, large open pillared hall Intricate carvings on the pillars and walls. Outside walls though not so intricately carved, still decent enough to take a round. Don't forget to view the temple from opposite side which is not as plain as the entrance roof. You may also go out of the boundaries on the front side and have a look at scattered sculptures.

Lakkundi is famous for its many ancient temples and monuments dating from the Later Chalukya period. This temple was was built in 11tg century by Queen Attimabbe, the wife of a Chalukya Chieftain Many inscriptions were discovered here covering the Chalukya, Kalachurya and Hoysala periods.Among the many different temples and monuments here is the remarkable Brahma Jinalaya, the oldest Jain Basadi in Lakkundi. This temple is dedicated to the greatest of the Jain Thirthankaras, Mahavira. There is also a beautiful idol of Lord Brahma in this temple.

Multiple road towards the temple was under constuction. The GPS kept on re routing and that made me wonder about its existence at the pinpointed location. I was even more uncertain while I was nearer to the location as the place is too much calm. I could see the tower and finial from a few hundred metres away and was finally relieved. Anyone travelling towards Gadag from Hospete direction can visit here. This temple is one of the oldest Jain temple and it is open to visitors only and not functioning unlike Saraswati Temple and Trikuteswar Temple of Gadag but it is well preserved than two of them. It is of Chalukyan architecture. Basadi is constructed wholly with soaprock.Gudhamandapa (Inside of the temple) is having three idols(pratistha). The prime deity worshipped is Tirthankara(standing position) which is placed at the centre. Saraswati at the left and Brahma(multi-faced) on the right. It is one of the very few temple where Brahma is also worshipped. Mukhamandapa consist of ornamentally decorated walls, beautifully carved pillars(appears to be monoliths),tower and the ancient architecture and inscriptions. In the North-East Corner of the temple, idol of Mahavir with missing head and left knee is placed .It is said to be desecrated in the past. The temple is now well maintained, surrounded by a small meadow and neatly trimmed shrubs enhancing the view. The atmostphere is serene. Temple is very worth visiting. I love historical places so we spent around 3 hours at the temple premises. There was a guide but he was attending a small group and was shortly disappeared after allowing us to explore. Entry fee is limited only to the museum.

"MUST VISIT PLACE" The best historical place as old as Beluru and Halebidu, needs recognition and more exposure to tourists from around... Hats off to the team for maintaining the premise clean and neat.

Lakkundi in Gadag District of Karnataka is a tiny village on the way to Hampi (Hosapete) from Hubballi. Lakkundi 11 km from Gadag in the east. It is 14 km from Dambal and 25 km from Mahadeva Temple (Itagi). Lakkundi, is full of ruined temples[3] like Mallikarjuna, Virabhadra, Manikeshwara, Nanneshwara, Lakshminarayana, Someshwara, Nilakanteshwara and many more. Lakkundi is a place of antiquarian interest with as many as 50 temples, 101 stepped wells (called Kalyani or Pushkarni) and 29 inscriptions, spread over the period of the later Chalukyas, Kalachuris, Seuna and the Hoysalas. A great center of Kalyani Chalukyas art, there are several temples of note here. Among them the Kasivisvesvara temple, Lakkundi is the most ornate and elaborately furnished. There is also the Brahma Jinalaya, a Jain temple, the largest and oldest shrine at Lakkundi. There is sculpture gallery (Museum) maintained by the ASI (Archaeological Survey of India). Lakkundi also has a Darga of Zindeshah Wali.

This is an ancient Jain temple also called Brahma Jinalaya. The entrance is right behind the Heritage museum. It is constructed in Dravidian style of architecture. It contained a seated statue of the Jain tirthankara but the original one was destroyed is kept outside.

Loved the temple architecture and carving on the wall and inside the Jain basadi / temple. This place is approximately 13kms east of Gadag on Bellary road. The place is now under the supervision of Archeological survey of India. There is a Lakkundi heritage centre or museum besides this basadi / temple which houses age old ruins of Jain teerthankaras and other Hindu deities that probably were found in and around Lakkundi. There are still 11 temples that belong to either Jain or Hindu religions. The famous Jain temple is Brahma Jinalaya which was said to be built in the 11th century by Kalyani Chalukyas. The basadi or temple houses a Brahma statue and that’s why it’s named Brahma Jinalaya. The main idol in the sanctum sanatorium is Jain teerthankara Neminatha Swami. There is also a statue of goddess Saraswati inside the temple. The temple was built in Dravidian architectural style.

Must visit place when you are around Gadag-betageri. 1 hour journey from Hubli. Hire a guide to get a great deal of information about the architecture and won't miss those fascinating details in the architecture. The carvings, the details in it just makes you wonder how much effort, time and skill has been invested in producing such a beautiful shrine.

I am a history buff I love these stones. These pictures are of Nanneshwara temple and the Kashivisvanatha temple at Lakkundi, which is 12 kms from Gadag. I was really saddened to see such a good piece of history being neglected.

Superb example of a well preserved Jain temple which closely relates to the nearby period temples. ASI' employee opened the doors when we expressed desire to enter but otherwise kept them closed, unlike in the case of other Hindu temples.

This temple is one of the ASI maintained temple in Lakkundi town. To reach the temple, you need to climb the steps behind Lakkundi heritage museum. The temple dates back to Kalyana Chalukya era and it is normally called Basadi. The temple has two parts, ranga mantapa and garbhagruha. The carvings on the pillars are unique. The designs around garbhagruha dwara are too good.

An amazing temple which is basically a Jain temple but also features Saraswati and Brahma. The Brahma is really unique given that there are four faces. There are some very elegant pillars and it beggars belief how our ancestors created these all those years ago. Most people neglect this place as it is not well known. There is a museum adjoining the place, and also a few temples and a beautiful stepwell nearby.

📍Brahma Jinalaya, Lakkundi, Gadaga, Karnataka. The Brahma Jinalaya, sometimes called as the Greater Jain Temple of Lakkundi, is an early 11th-century Mahavira temple in Lakkundi, Gadag District of Karnataka. The temple is notable for its reliefs depicting Jaina artwork, statues of the Tirthankaras and the two Hindu statues of Brahma and Saraswati inside its inner mandapa. 〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰 HUMBLE REQUEST, DO NOT THROW THE PLASTIC, BOTTLES AND OTHER GARBAGE. TRY TO KEEP THE NATURE CLEAR AND CLEAN... JUST ENJOY THE BEAUTY OF THE NATURE...

(Visited in June 2019) - Ruins of an old Jaina temple dated to Western Chalukya era that are still being maintained in an excellent way! Just a few steps away from Lakkundi Heritage centre, this is a must visit place. The carvings on temple-vimana are exquisite. The pillar work inside the temple is highly ornate. There is also an inscription in the temple.

Very special two storied temple/jeenalaya or basadi. This is just behind the Lakkundi Heritage Centre. It has later chalukya architecture. Currently houses the Neminath theerthankara in the garbhagriha. The story goes that it was initially meant for Mahaveera, later due to religious conflict the Bramha was installed in the place, after the intervene of king, Neminatha was installed back. The same is been etched in an inscription which in on the wall of temple. You can still see the idol of the Mahaveera, just beside the entrance, head is chopped off. The Bramha idol is inside the temple. Temple walls have plane design with the mini gopuras around it. Doesn't have any carvings depicting stories. The top floor of the temple Keerthi Mukha doesn't carry any theerthankara image, the images are removed.
