At a distance of 600 m from Ganpatipule Bus Stand and 1 km from Ganpatipule Beach, Prachin Kokan is an open air museum situated in Ganpatipule. It is one of the top places to visit in Ganpatipule. Spread over an area of 3 acres, the museum has several exhibits depicting the traditional Konkan way of life. The museum was constructed in 2004 by Vaibhav Sardesai who succeeded in not only providing interesting information about Konkan to the tourists but also employment opportunities for the locals. One can get the glimpses of local rural life including the local deities, the lifestyle, barter trade of the olden days, various professions of the people, etc. inside the museum. The museum showcases the ingenuity of the Kokan with sculptures of the Maratha hero Shivaji maharaj depicting historical moments, and models of the amazing sea forts in the Kokan region. Prachin Konkan has a counter for exhibiting the Sawantwadi wooden handicrafts, the first of its kind in Ganpatipule, where tourists can purchase memorabilia and souvenirs. In Prachin Kokan there is also a Nakshatra Baug - a garden of trees for each sun sign. Set in a lush green locale the museum is also a paradise for bird watchers. The trees in the museum are home to many species of birds of the region. The museum also attempts to introduce the birds and fish found in this region by way of a small exhibition. Entry Fee: Rs. 40 per person with guide. Timings: 8.30 AM to 6 PM Date of experience: 1st Jan 2021

A must sightseeing if you are in or around Ganpatipule. A very good illustrated 500 years old history of Konkan. Guide was good 👍. It will make you feel proud of our legacy and values, very simplistic but to the point 👉 tour of from where we have came. You will have to climb around 300 stairs and face some tiny mosquitoes 🦟 .

Though they call it Museum, it's more of a life style journey of a konkan House hold in olden times. They also showcase good collection of sea shells and some Village made toys n household items. If in Ganpatiphule, do visit the Museum, which takes 1.5 max of your time. Buy your ticket before 5.15pm.

Beautiful way to introduce children to old Indian culture and way of life. Beautiful set up, lot of research and hardwork in preparing displays, rustic verdant surroundings. You can hear birds singing and almost no outside noise. There is small restaurant serving local delicacies at reasonable rates and a souvenir shop selling locally produced handicrafts. Tour guides/ volunteers take you around and show various installations of different settings like typical Konkan house, way of hunting, old grocery shop, black Smith etc. Starts with a short video about the origin of the museum and the displays.the volunteer takes you around and stops at each display while explaining about it. Improvement possible in the language of explanation and some tips on how not to be monotonous and add a bit of passion in the monologues and involve the visitors by questions. Common parking before entry along with parking for magic garden. Entry fees Rs 40 per adult. Includes charges of guides.

It's nice place to visit. You will have a guide to explain everything. The only thing I would mention is that there are mosquitoes everywhere. So go with a full dress and anti mosquito roll on.

Great experience of visiting this place. Has many trees planted which normally we don't see or seen before. A guide is provided with a charge and the conversation happens in marathi. Useful information as well as historic information is provided during the tour. Shopping inside is possible with select goods. Very well maintained and organised.

Well maintained Open air museum of a village lifestyle. They have shown every contributor of a village ecosystem in a natural way. You keep walking on a narrow path where the guides keep narrating the role and responsibilities of the person in the village. Loved the guidance provided by the associates. Sea museum is worth visiting. You see various life forms there.

Nice museum named Prachin Konkan. With unique seashell variety, nice traditional food at restaurant Junaka bhakhar (झुणका भाकर), Thalipith (थालीपीठ). Guides are really good and thorough in their knowledge when they explain the old tradition of Konkan. Worth a visit for sure. Ticket rate are cheap, just 40 Rs per person. To take photos just pay 20 extra for photo ticket. Takes about 2 to 3 hours of time for single visit.

One of the MUST visit places in Ganpatipule / Ratnagiri. This place is all about how the people lived in Konkan prior to all the modernization came in. It's not just a mannequins show but it's an experience that they take you through. They have a very nominal fees but their guide takes you through the whole park and they narrate you while going through it. The narration is really informative and you feel like you belong to that place when they take you throug the experience. They have handicraft shop inside which has nice wooden hand-crafted things and wooden toys. I never thought that I would find a wooden tic-tac-toe in there and it is really fun to play with it. And everything is at a very reasonable cost, so you can buy souveniers for your family and friends here. The restaurant inside is really aweome and it is built like a Machan and gives that authentic Forest-Meal experience. It is a veg restaurant but their food is really nice. Especially UKADICHE MODAK was awesome and is a MUST TRY. Not only that, they also have an exhibition of various sea-shells and it is very interesting too. Do visit this place when in Ratnagiri/Ganpatipule.

This is a must go place if you are in Ratnagiri Or Ganpati Pule. Take kids along to understanding Konkan and Indian culture. You will get a well trained guide for the tour. My kids loved it. The cave, the trees, statues and souvenir shops. After the shop my kids were remembering guides words and telling their granny that 400 years back, humans took 1.5hr hardship to get a bowl of oil. It was difficult time then. The guide speak in Hindi too. So friendly for other Indian states residents. Overall, a must visit place.

It's a nice place to visit and understand our cultural legacy. The guide nicely explained the origin of Konkan, different traditional professions of Konkani people. It's similar to the Big Foot in Goa (+spice farm) or Kaneri math in Kolhapur. Please try ukadiche modak and thalipeeth. You need to order at the counter before the tour so that at the end of tour you get served. The Shankh exhibition was awesome. We bought a Shankh for around 2.5k which was worth the money. Highly recommend place.

Best place to go with family in Ganpatipule and Ratnagiri ! Konkan heritage is well preserved and portrayed with a beautiful cave experience depicting past and present life ! Prachin Konkan village is the best place to learn about life and lifestyles 100 of years ago of our ancestors ! The guides of the village are amazing and the kind of knowledge they give will amaze you ! I love the way our guide pooja explained about each and every exhibit inside the village display and the natural forest ambience is therapeutic! I must say that the life Konkan villagers lived was smart yet simple , beautiful and elegant along with all the traditional values and cultures intact ! The festivals celebrated were pious , uniting and moreover the food was made on the most Satvic model ! I have taken many learning’s and applied them since I came back it’s truly a must visit with family and a true delight to self ! The restaurant inside serves authentic thali with the most delectable modaks prepared by the locals with authenticity and love ! I am thankful to Maharashtra tourism for curating such experiences and it’s truly a wonder of beautiful Maharashtra ! MTDC Ganpatipule has made it easy to commute and guide us around Ratnagiri ! Thanks for lifelong memories

Best place to visit near Ganpatipule. I wondered how they have created such a beautiful museum with all the live trees and plants. They tried to display the legacy of ancient Kokan. Also you will get to see the conch museum. Many products they have here for sale like spices from Kokan. Decor products and lot more. It's a must visit place in Ganpati pule. On a walking distance from Ganpati temple.

If you have visited Kaneri Math then you will feel this Museum is below average. Entery ticket is 50 rupee per person and if you want to take photos in your mobile then extra 50 rupees per mobile they charge. Inside you can see few manmade sculptures like Sonar Lohar Farmer doing their work etc. They have guides free of cost they make groups and starts giving information. Store you energy before entering as you will require to walk quite long path and there is store inside which sells 15 rupees bottle to 20 rupee.

Admire traditional Kokan handicrafts and learn about the ancient culture of the region at Prachin Konkan Museum, a life-size open-air museum demonstrating various aspects of life within rich local traditions and customs. Explore old style houses and artifacts and check out restored interiors all set in lush greenery with rare birds. See shoemakers, basket weavers, millers, snake charmers, traders, soldiers and members of royal family cast in plaster life-size statues .The guide will tell you all about the rich history and you can have a traditional meal at the museum’s restaurant.

150₹ per person compulsory entry is what they charge. Although a very interesting tour and property it could’ve been much more interesting. They have a nice green property and a very different showcase. People tend to visit it because there is not much to see in and around ganpatipule. Don’t be worried if you don’t visit. You’re not going to miss on something very interesting stuff. Should visit if you have nothing else to do.

Such an informative way of depicting Konkan Lifestyle of old times. Everything was so good, however, i think that the guided should also tell about the plants and trees and it’s importance. At the tour, the guides say stuff very quickly and move on which makes it difficult to actually observe and learn about interesting stuff. Had a great experience though.

Good for the children and the people who lives in mega city.who dont know the things which works in village.it was good because you get a lot of information about the old days in which people used to leave.some structure where done where well.but when coming to the guide they where the wrost .their tone is so irritating (i am not discriminating someone) they had no idea what they are saying, they just byhearted those line or that content and they where just vomiting those words nothing else which was the worst part and i hated it

We recently visited this place on 18 Nov 23. This place is really awesome located near Ganpati pule in kokan. It's is surrounded with true blissful nature 🌿🍃.. Prachin kokan gives an over all view of how the ancient kokan was. Everything is demonstrate in a very real-life way. There is always a guide given to group of visitors, and that guide explains in details about everything. It's really a must watch place to visit at a very nominal entry fee of 50/- per person. Overall it was a very good experience to be here 😊
