Visiting the Government Museum in Bengaluru was a captivating journey through the annals of Karnataka's rich cultural heritage. As I stepped into the historic institution, I was immediately immersed in a world of antiquity and artistic prowess. The museum, nestled in Cubbon Park, unfolded a tapestry of exhibits ranging from ancient sculptures to contemporary art. Wandering through the galleries, I marveled at the intricately carved Hoysala sculptures that spoke volumes about the region's architectural brilliance. The museum's collection showcased a diverse array of artifacts, including pottery, coins, and traditional costumes, offering a comprehensive glimpse into the state's vibrant past. The numismatic section, with its ancient coins and inscriptions, was particularly fascinating, serving as a time-traveling portal to bygone eras. The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the painting gallery, housing masterpieces from renowned artists. The vivid strokes of Raja Ravi Varma's legendary works left an indelible impression, reflecting the fusion of tradition and modernity in Indian art. Overall, the Government Museum in Bengaluru was a cultural odyssey, unraveling the layers of Karnataka's history with every exhibit. It left me with a profound appreciation for the artistic legacy that has shaped the region over centuries, making it a must-visit for anyone seeking to delve into the cultural heartbeat of South India.

The Government Museum in Bangalore, currently undergoing renovation, stands as one of India's oldest museums, founded in 1865. It houses rare collections of archaeological and geological artifacts, including ancient coins, sculptures, inscriptions, and old paintings, offering a deep dive into the region's rich cultural and historical heritage. The museum's diverse exhibits span various periods, showcasing the evolution of art and culture in Karnataka and beyond. The Government Museum in Bangalore is a must visit not just for tourists, but also local Bangaloreans. The museum was built in 1865 and like State Central Library, is a Pompeian Red stone building. The artefacts there date back many centuries. Don’t miss out on the hero stone at the entrance of the museum. Would definitely help if there was a guide of sorts at the museum.

Has very ancient artifacts, some of them dating to older than 3000 bce. If you're a history enthusiast, this is a very good place. You can find ancient sculptures , inscriptions, ancient civilizationsl tools, weapons, pots, etc. There are 2 floors here, usually less crowded. The ticket cost is also cheap, 40.per adult. It is located right next to the vishweshwarayya museum and ub City in the view. The place is easily accessible by bus routes and auto. Good place to spend for 1 or 2 hours

It's a great place, there are two museums next to each other, the science and historic museum. This is the historic one. The entry fee is ₹20 for adults and ₹10 for kids as on Feb 2021 and there is ample parking space. It was a nice time to see so many ancient things, the sulptures and paintings etc. It's a must visit place if you enjoy historical museums.

This place is an amazing spot to visit. The entry fee is Rs20 per head. The surroundings are well-maintained and intact. It has the best collections to view. They have the paintings and sculptures of many eras. ♥️ The stone carvings date back to the 11th & 10th century too. The collections are worth checking. 🥹 Back then people were very creative... To be honest it's better than today's time too. The carvings of Ganga, Kuber & lord Ganesha in a dancing position... It's amazing 💙 The painting collections are pretty good too. They have the pottery collection in the ground floor. They even have the armouries of great kings on display. Especially the musical instruments back then were very beautifully carved and they definitely weigh a lot. Do come and check this place with your friends and families.

They conduct Mango Mela every year in this place. Mangoes sold here are sweet and very tasty. Even though car parking is not organised properly still the place won't be crowded, it's well managed. About agriculture museum they have lot of variety of plants and prices are very nominal. Please do visit once to see the nursery and agriculture museum. Place is very peaceful and less crowded. Entire place is covered with trees so we won't feel the heat. Visit once to experience and know about agriculture.

I have visited this place twice. Last Sunday I had a visit with my foreign friend, to let him know about our beautiful history. I hope he liked. Personally I too liked the collections here, but I would suggest if they can more details, more antiques, more historical things. I have been to many museums, the Chennai museum was really great. So here if the management can try for making it more informational and interesting. The building from outside is beautiful though.

A decent history museum with moderate artifacts. As you enter the periphery there are canons in the front. Ticket here is 20Rs. per person. Inside you fine marvelous two life size Dwarapala idols with amazing details, many potery found in burial sites, bronze notes, paintings, stone age tools, swords etc. First floor has some old musical instruments, and many old paintings. Another section is quite interesting where a whole hall is filled with ancient stone idols. There are some stone sculptures even outside.

Government Museum, Bangalore, established in 1865 by the Mysore State with the guidance of Surgeon Edward Balfour who founded the museum in Madras and supported by the Chief Commissioner of Mysore, L.B. Bowring, is one of the oldest museums in India and the second oldest museum in South India. It is now an archaeological museum and has a rare collection of archaeological and geological artifacts including old jewellery, sculpture, coins and inscriptions. The museum is also home to the Halmidi inscription, the earliest Kannada inscription (450 AD). The government museum in Bangalore was established on 18 August 1865, during the period when L.B. Bowring was Chief Commissioner of Mysore State. A formal official notification was issued in the Mysore Government Gazette on 17 April 1866, a copy of which is still preserved in the Karnataka State Archives in Bangalore. The gazette notification officially invited citizens to contribute cultural and natural artifacts to the museum for display. The museum was founded at the advice and counsel of Edward G. Balfour, a medical officer of the Madras Army, transferred to Bangalore from Madras. Balfour suggested setting up a museum similar to the museum he had previously established in Madras in 1851. Balfour had organized collections for the Great Exhibition of 1851. Balfour had a collection of zoological and natural specimens to exhibit in the Museum. The Government museum in Bangalore was then known as the Mysore Government Museum and the building opened in 1877 was located on what was then Sydney road (today Kasturba road).

The best place for a person inclined towards knowing more about history. The ticket price is 50/-. Worth the time and money.

A very good historic museum situated off MG road. It's just next to the VITM (another nice place to visit). The museum has a lot of artifacts, though some of them have very generic names like bricks, bow and arrow etc. rather than something more specific. Tickets are priced very reasonably too.

The Government Museum in the city of Bangalore is a storehouse of rich historical and cultural significance. Located at the Kasturba Gandhi road.one of the oldest museums in the country is a remarkable treasure trove of archaeological items .The entire premises has well defined boundaries and there's entry fee. The entrance /exit points are well secured. Frequency of dustbins and seaters is low. There's no facility for washrooms or drinking water supply in around this place. The entire premises is under CCTV surveillance and has been regularly maintained. Worth visiting. Don't miss back side of this museum.Amazing collection of rare, historical artefacts, though they were not preserved behind physical barriers like glass or railing, that may call for potential vandalism.Talking about accessibility it's quite challenging for disabled to get inside the building as there's no ramp at the entrance. There's no railings either. The entrance portion has no seaters or shady place which is not good. There no restrictions with respect to age. Children should be under the guidance of any adult as most sculptures are not having a fixed support which might be dangerous. For people to access first floor there's only stairs which might be little hard for aged. But it's worth the visit and the ambience is quite calming and relaxing.

Given the low entrance fee, it's worth a visit if you're in the area. The collection of carvings and sculptures is interesting, as are some of the artifacts. However, it's not very large, and there's very little information provided about what the artifacts are, when they are from, or any other context.

They have kept some amazing historical relics in this place including a field gun from Imperial German Army of Kaiser Wilhelm II The building is very beautiful and is a relic of the erstwhile kingdom of Mysore,if you look closely at the entrance on the right hand side Mysore state museum is written on the top. The beautiful model of the fort of Srirangapatna is worth seeing. Dont forget to download the Pinakin audio guide App while visiting the place,as I got to know a lot from that guide and also learnt some of the unique stories of the sculptures kept there. Also see the beautiful musical instruments on the second floor and do pause to see the beautiful paintings from Tanjore and Deccan. Overall a nice museum in Bangalore.

The museum is a two storey building. On the first floor is their prehistoric collection of pottery which is quite good and definitely worth a visit. They also have old Mysore prints and different types of arms and armour. On the second floor they have old musical instruments which is interesting as well as mysore paintings. The Venkatappa art gallery is located in the same complex and entry to it is included in the museum entry ticket. A complete tour should take less then 2 hours.

Located on the Kasturba Gandhi Road, the Government Museum enjoys a close proximity to the famous Cubbon Park as well. Its main building was designed by the Colonel Sankey. It was in the year of 1876 when its construction was completed. The museum boasts of rich and varied collection. Ancient coins and art have been displayed beautifully here. Various remnants from Indus valley civilizations, Mohenjodaro, Halebid and Vijayanagar have also been kept here. Some of the relics that you will see here are almost 5000 years old. It also has prehistoric artifacts. These artifacts which belong to the Neolithic period were excavated from Chandravalli. You can also get a glimpse of items like inscriptions, icons, paintings, South Indian jewelry, beautiful stones, coins, miniature paintings, sculptures, textiles and others.

It's housed in a brightly painted in a wonderful red building with green doors and windows. Entry fee is just a nominal Rs 20 for Adults and Rs 10 for Kids, worth every penny. Museum access is roughly spread out in 3 Main Areas, Ground Floor Main houses everything from pottery, lifestyle, utensils to weapons, 3D scaled city models, etc. The Second Floor houses many a paintings styles from across India, more so of Mysore style. The access from Ground to First floor is through 2 spiral granite cut staircases, I guess a single block of granite, found that to be extremely interesting. There is a small walkway to the area housing sculptures. Various Sculptures of God's, Goddesses and Buddha / Mahavira, Social rituals, Processions, Inscriptions etc can be found. Outside the Museum also one can find few beautiful sculptures. Photographs are permitted without additional charges, though lights coming through the European era windows could be a challenge. The Museum Office is on the ground floor, and the only hiccups that I noticed were the missing of quite a few artifacts and paintings for restoration or maintainance. Also the exhibiting cases haven't been changed in a long while, including lights. The Staff and Museum Directors are accessible and approachable. Willing to help. Another flow could be that there are no washrooms or toilets open to public that I saw in the Main Building. With the Rs 20 or Rs 10 tickets one can also visit the Venkettapa Art Gallery just besides.

An excellent place to learn and know the heritage of great Karnataka. Located very near to UB city. The 50 years old building houses the historical treasures. Entry fee is Rs.20 (Al's includes the entry to art gallery) Open from 9.30 to 5.30, I would say this is a must visit place if you have some good time to spend. If you want to really enjoy come with some extra time so you can read the description about the master pieces.

Good exhibits. Models are good. Atmosphere is very nice. Quiet place. Fresh air. Needs some fine tuning. As there are no persons to explain, atleast some handouts can be given about the mueseum and it's exhibits. Worth visiting.

Anyone interested in History will love this place. It houses artefacts belonging to the Chola and Ganga dynasties all the way back to megalithic and neolithic ages. There are three main sections here, viz the Antiquities section, Sculpture Section and Paintings section. The last one also has an assortment of musical instruments that were used in ancient courts and palaces. Every piece inside this museum is so carefully stored within glass vaults and well preserved. I only wish they did something about the inscriptions and sculptures outside the museum, because they are completely exposed to the elements and have no protection whatsoever.

It's an amazing place for historians. We'll find lot of sculptures and inscription stones from Bangalore. It has the famous Begur Hero stone inscription, Halmidi inscription and more. They have placed several herostones around the museum. The building has Corinthian columns and a heritage site in itself.

  • 5/5 Chandan B. 1 year ago on Google
Unfortunate to see this place not get as much attention as the technological museum. There are some amazing archaeological artefacts right from 4000 BC to 1800 AD. However, some of the artefacts need better cataloging.

  • 3/5 Pratz B. 1 year ago on Google
Amazing collection of artefacts in very poor condition of upkeep. The display cases are old and not proper. The items are priceless and are almost unkept. There is bad odour and mould in the cases. I am just hoping these pieces are not damaged by the conditions they are kept in. The staff don’t care and it’s a treasure trove going down the drain. I am sure they don’t have the adequate resources to ensure the items are displayed properly when you compare it to Mumbai museums these are just so shabby feel sad of them.

The main government museum with a good collection of items. Not much rush as now a day people are not interested in the history of the country that much. Visited here with my family and my children appreciated it. The car parking could be an issue on busy days, we were able to find the parking just in front of the museum on the road. If you have time visit the nearby Vishwesharayya Tech Museum which is one of the best. Some 20rs collected as entry fee. You are free to take pictures inside.
