This is such an underrated tourist spot. This deserves more visitors. This museum showcases the by gone legacy of Portuguese colonial era in Kochi, and surrounding areas at just ₹. 20. One can also find the remains of The erstwhile Fort Manuel, at its basement. The curator of this museum, Ealroy Chettan is so passionate about explaining everything to the visitors. Trust me! This museum was founded with the help of Calouste Gulbenkian foundation in Lisbon Portugal.

Mind blowing place. Here is a guy from royal lineage and he shared me exact mean of Cochin kingdom This place was formed after periyar river floods long back but it was founded and built by Chinese commander name 'Ko' I am forgetting the first name. It put the ne after him and chine so that's how it became Cochin. Here are some very beautiful artifacts from Portuguese history in India.

Honestly couldn’t get to look at the museum and enjoy it because the guy at the ticket counter just did not stop talking. He kept blabbering about history and whatever he knew for 45 minutes!!! Never stop to listen to that guy and please know when to stop. There is a alot of history- sure but it felt like we were held captives to listen to what the guy had researched on. Please be careful while visiting this place.

The staff here preserved the things very well and the staff member has much knowledge about the museum. The person will individually give a tour of the museum to us, and he is very much friendly, and he knows a lot of things from the museum. Overall, the place is a great for people who love to know about the history and the events that happened at that time. The Museum is well maintained.

Barely a museum - more like a collection of random Catholic artefacts. The main staff member is interesting to chat to, except he espouses all kinds of crazy conspiracy theories about Kochi, India and the world generally- insisting that they are facts!

The museum shows the contributions of the Portuguese in shaping the Christian culture in the area. It shows various ancient artifacts collected from various churches in and around Kochi. I was the only visitor in the museum when I first arrived. It had just reopened after lunch, and so I had a thorough look around. The Museum is built above the remnants of the old Cochin Fort, and it can be seen in the basement of the museum. There are lots to see, read and appreciate and this museum is a must visit location.

Museum is on single floor, very small and can be seen in 3-4 minutes, but entry ticket is 20rs. Which is not worth for a visit. Single star is given because of Bishops house which is beside the museum, house looks good for a photographs.

The Staff is knowledgeable of the history of Cochin even before the Europeans ever arrived to the Port. Enjoyed a small and very interesting exchange of historical facts. The museum artifacts transported the experience in the time of the Portuguese establishment on the land! Photography is not permitted, but there are we'll written texts on the artifacts and related history. The grounds are very well kept and grand, visitors can stroll and photograph plants and trees! Tickets are 14 Rs

I was hoping for more information, but one is left to their own devices in this place. There is a lot of information put up on the walls, but context for some of the artifacts are missing. It would be good if there were more signage helping people move around and more context on what one is looking at

Just the artifacts are kept there without no description. It could be maintained neatly. It was smelling and untidy. It is a small place and can be seen within five minutes. Mostly they are accepting cash only. It is time taking process to make an online payment when I visited (Paytm only is accepted) Parking is available.

It's a good place. But don't expect too much. There was a weird scent all around. And the guy in the counter doesn't look so normal. He had so many perfumes bottles and even a strange playlist. He started explaining things to us and all of a sudden he started asking questions. It was like we did something wrong and he was offended. It was not a nice experience for us.

We visited the museum just before it closed on the 23rd of October The museum is steeped in a rich history and is sitting on an excavation site shrouded in mystery The best part of the museum was its resident caretaker and researcher Elroy, who took us through a journey of Cochin’s glorious past! He told us things in such a passionate way that we’re bound to remember them forever! A must visit when you’re in Cochin and stop by to say hi to Elroy

The Indo Portuguese Museum in Kochi is an absolute treasure trove of history and culture. Nestled within the grounds of the Bishop's House, this museum houses a spectacular collection of artifacts that beautifully showcase the Indo-Portuguese heritage in Kerala. Dr. Joseph Kureethra, the former Bishop of Kochi, was instrumental in creating this museum, which stands testament to his passion for preserving and celebrating the Portuguese influence in Fort Kochi and beyond. As you step inside, you'll be transported to a bygone era, as the museum's interior exudes an enchanting ambiance. The artifacts are thoughtfully divided into five sections - Altar, Treasure, Procession, Civil Life, and Cathedral - allowing visitors to delve into the different aspects of Indo-Portuguese history. The Altar section is a visual feast, displaying intricately crafted altarpieces, statues, and religious artifacts. The Treasure section showcases a dazzling collection of precious objects, including gold and silver items, jewelry, and coins, offering a glimpse into the wealth and opulence of the era. The Procession section brings to life the vibrant festivals and processions that were an integral part of the Indo-Portuguese culture. Colorful floats, ornate palanquins, and traditional costumes transport visitors back in time, evoking a sense of celebration and community. Moving on to the Civil Life section, you'll discover everyday objects that give insight into the daily lives of the people during that period. From household items to furniture, these artifacts provide a fascinating window into the social fabric of the time. Finally, the Cathedral section pays homage to the grandeur of the Indo-Portuguese cathedrals. Architectural models and paintings showcase the magnificence of these structures, highlighting their unique blend of Indian and Portuguese influences. Overall, the Indo Portuguese Museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in history and culture. It beautifully captures the legacy of the Indo-Portuguese relationship and offers a captivating journey through time. Whether you're a history buff, an art enthusiast, or simply curious about the region's heritage, this museum will leave you awe-inspired and enriched. Don't miss the opportunity to explore this gem in Kochi! 🏛️✨

The Indo-Portuguese Museum offers a quick glimpse into the past at a minimal entry fee of 10 Rs. However, the experience is quite limited as it houses only a small collection, including statues, a couple of old books, swords, clothes, and furniture from the era. While it may be visited for the sake of curiosity, there isn't much to explore or spend a significant amount of time here.

The curator/archeologist is a unique individual who has recovered some of India's historical papers from abroad. He was also the person who first explored the ancient tomb underneath, which was discovered when the building was being built. The historical artifacts on display were very interesting, and some were very well preserved(the old bench). I have visited twice and plan on visiting again. I would like to learn more about the history of the churches built in the area to better understand the history.

I visited the Indo-Portuguese museum on a weekday. The tickets are provided near the entrance to the museum, the ticket fee was 20₹ for adults. Photography is restricted inside the museum. The museum has Christian artefacts and relics, along with a brief description of each exhibit. While entering the museum you can see a stair going to the basement, unfortunately, the basement is flooded and will be the same due to the change in average global sea level. The basement contains secret passages and tunnels running through the Fort Kochi area. I was able to converse with the museum curator, he shared his knowledge and views on the history of the Kochi and its significance. If you have an interest in art, history, and cartography then take time and enjoy the visit. The museum visit is a memorable experience from fort kochi.

Housed in the archbishop's house compound, naturally it sheds light on the advent of christianity in a huge amount in kochi followed by the roman catholic portuguese being ousted by the protestant dutch and the changes that came with it

A charming seaside area, Fort Kochi is known for its Dutch, Portuguese, and British colonial architecture, and elaborate bamboo fishing nets at Fort Kochi Beach. St. Francis Church was the original burial site of explorer Vasco da Gama. Upscale eateries and chic cafes serve Keralan specialties, and quaint shops sell cotton clothing and handmade souvenirs. Heritage buildings house contemporary art galleries. ―

The museum was established by the efforts of the late Dr. Joseph Kureethra, Bishop of Kochi, in a bid to protect and showcase the rich cultural heritage and Portuguese influence. This museum now showcases the Portuguese influences on Fort Kochi and the surrounding areas, especially, the western parts of Kochi. The museum has five main sections: Altar, Treasure, Procession, Civil Life and Cathedral. Among the pieces on display are a piece of the altar made in teak (16th century) from the Church of Our Lady of Hope, Vypeen, a chasuble (19th century) from Bishop's House, Fort Kochi, processional cross, which is a combination of silver and wood (17th century) from Santa Cruz Cathedral, Fort Kochi, Indo-Portuguese Monstrance (18-19th century), from The Church of Our Lady of Hope, Vypeen. The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation has also contributed to the collection at the Indo- Portuguese Museum and has to its credit sculptures, precious metal objects and vestments, among others from the Cathedral of Santa Cruz and other churches of the Kochi diocese.

Small museum cituated inside Bishop House compound. Charging Rs.20 rupees for entry. Museum have collection of different artifacts, painting, sculpture etc from different ancient churches in and around kochi(contribution from 6-7 churches). Photography is not allowed. Suggestions : Place is not maintained well even though it is charging 20 rupees( we can see spider web 🕸️ even in entrance). Should have included some video introduction of 5 minutes about history of Christianity / churches in Kochi.

  • 1/5 Kevin G. 2 years ago on Google
Contrary to the other reviews, we found the caretaker/curator to be extremely aggressive. He was less interested in people learning and more in letting others know how much he had to say. The brief 5 mins we spent with the guy brought back traumatic memories of rude & loud schoolteachers. As to the contents of the museum itself, they seemingly haven't been maintained in decades and one has little to no context as to how they all fit together. If anything it shows how the Catholic church plundered Kerala in the name of Christianity, showering themselves with gold & silver plated ornaments.

Fascinating histories on display that depict and tell the story of european settlers in Fort Cochin and the how the area was the gateway to Asia for settlers and traders. Museum is well maintained. Next to museum we can find bishop house (not allowed inside) The person who issues ticket explained about museum history well. As per them, we can find a cave directly from this place to Fort kochi , which is already covered by sea water. When tides are more, the water will enter inside the museum via the cave. During high waves water will be available till entrance. We are lucky to see the place, where no water was there.

The Indo-Portuguese Museum in Kochi is a hidden gem that offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich historical and cultural connection between India and Portugal. I recently visited the museum and was thoroughly impressed by the exhibits and artifacts on display. The museum beautifully showcases the Indo-Portuguese heritage through its extensive collection of religious art, artifacts, and furniture. The attention to detail in preserving and presenting these artifacts is commendable. Each exhibit tells a story of the vibrant past and the cultural exchange between the two nations. One of the highlights of the museum is its collection of religious art. The intricately carved wooden statues and altarpieces are truly captivating.

The person who curates this place is very very informative, and very passionate about the history of Cochin. Worth definitely visit if you’re truly interested in the history of Cochin :)

Was excited to visit this place based on the reviews we’d seen. There was no staff member talking through any of the history (as the other reviews suggest). We even asked the staff member if it was guided - he said to read what was on the walls. It ended up being a walk through and look at church artefacts without us being able to appreciate the history fully. Honestly, very disappointing.

👍 I was getting bored until my friend called me and asked to join them for port kochi. It is nice to roam around the seashore and get the breeze air along the way. There are so many places nearby you can checkout and you should try out a seafood meal which you can find nearby hotels. Also you can try...
