It's great place for gain your knowledge. The Assam State Museum was established on 21st April in 1940. The Kamrupa Anusandhana Samiti which was the pioneer organization in the field of historical and antiquarian studies of Assam had established the Assam State Museum. The museum was formally inaugurated by the Governor of Assam Sir Robert Neil Reid. Rai Bahadur Kanaklal Barua, Raibahadur Ananda Chandra Agarwalla, Late Rai Bahadur Kali Ram Medhi, their untiring efforts were greatly responsible for establishment of the Museum.

Amazing collection of creations. Nice clean. However there must be some descriptions of exhibits. Everyone may not be aware of things place. If description is provided it would be great to understand the exhibits and history or mythology behind it. Directions within premises could be handy and helpful. Otherwise things are well managed and systematic. A place worth to visit.

The Assam State Museum was founded by the Kamrupa Anusandhan Samity and was opened on 21st April, 1940 by Sir Robert Reid, the then Governor of Undivided Assam. The Provincial Museum was taken over by the Govt. of Assam in 1953. The exhibits of the Museum are displayed under different sections, viz., Epigraphy, Sculptures, Miscellaneous, Natural History, art and Crafts, Anthropology & Folk Art & Arms section. The sculptures from the Assam region fall into four principal categories - stone, wood, metal and terracotta. The collections which are on display here, are very rare. The library in Assam State Museum was established in 1985 and is rich in its stenographic collections. There are various periodicals, journals and books relating to art, culture, mythology, biography, encyclopedic works and even the Asiatic Society journals of the country.

For a deeper insight into the history and culture of the state, Assam State Museum, located at the heart of the city, is a great stopover. The collections include royal garments, weapons, paintings, sculptures, stone and copper inscriptions, woodwork and more. Some memorabilia from World War II is also on display. Established in 1940, it is among the bigger multipurpose museums in the country. It is divided into various sections like sculptures, natural history, folk art, crafts and epigraphy. Some interesting exhibits in these include bamboo items, coins, musical instruments, ivory paintings etc. A library inside the museum is particularly amazing, as it houses a rich collection of journals, periodicals and books relating to mythology, biography, art and culture, and other subjects.

It presents the Assam heritage in the best possible way you can imagine. There are various sections within the museum. The Arms and Ammunition gallery is present in the groundfloor and is to the right when you enter the museum. The cultural art and history along with the Assam traditions and Music and Literature sections are spread in various parts. There is also section of excavated idols and the miniature version of village life setup. The auditorium within the museum conducts some programs on special occasion. The overall experience is great.

Its a museum of Assam state which is situated just next to Guwahati railway station. You can go there by walk or can take local transport. Very good place to know about the culture of Assamese people and Assam. Museum is not so big but still if you like historical things then definitely you will like it.

One of the must visit places in guwahati , this museum has lots to offer from sculptures to cultural things . The infrastructure is good and it feels peaceful to explore this museum because it's not very busy . The ticket price is reasonable and varies according to age , nationality and students . This is a good place to know about the culture of Assam and i will suggest you take a guide who can explain all the things in detail . Without a guide it will be the same as reading a book without understanding it . Photography charges exclude the ticket, you have to pay extra for photography . Talking about my experience... It was really amazing and good for a one time visit .

I came here once when i was a kid (during an drawing class when our teacher took us for an hour or so to sketch the objects basically a statue out there) from the blurry images that I remember I can say that I had a wonderful time exploring each floor from "Traditional Axomiya Pakh Ghor to Old manuscript" (that's the most I can recall right now) I must say I literally want to pay a visit soon cause that's where you could discover some unknown things and learn and see. (P.s- whenever I pass by the museum I'm like 'oi suwa eiat moi akibo ahisilu agote' )

PREMISE: Surprisingly clean and very well managed. Helpful staff. EXHIBITS: Totally 13 galleries in all. As layman we were impressed with the efforts. Art historians can elaborate more for the accuracy. Having visited all the galleries, we felt stagnation of display. a very good scope of up-gradation. GENERAL: The brochure can be collected from the reception at the start. Time is 10 to 5. Monday closed. Worth once visit. even if Shillong Don Bosco was seen earlier.

Had a pleasant time in this museum. Ticket price for adults is 20 and if bought online, then 2 rupees extra will have to be spent. The museum closes at 5 PM. The museum is huge and has a large collection of ancient relics. Very good collection of old statues, cannons and guns, manuscripts and paintings. Important pieces of Assamese history can be found here. The thing that really stood out was some Japanese stuff from the World War 2 era. Highly recommend this place to someone looking to spend some time in and around Dighalipukhuri.

Very clear and well maintained. Many of the showcased items need clearer description. I also noticed a lot of mistakes (typos/grammatical) in the descriptions. The authority needs to rectify those. It can leave a negative impression on visitors especially those coming from other states/foreign tourists.

Good place for those who love to explore history. It's about people, places and their culture, is spread over three floors and has different sections. It would require about 2-3 hours to go through each sections. Entry fee above 10 years is 20 and it's free for children below 10 years. Presently undergoing some renovation work however open for visitors. There is park beside a lake which is just opposite to the museum so visiting this place together for half a day is a good proposition.

I didn't get a chance to visit here though located very close unless sudden impromptu plan got materialize when my niece nephew were in town. Its a good place to understand roots of our Assamese culture and also show it to others needing more info and have a look in details. My little niece and nephew had a great time there. Hope they maintain the same in better manner for tourists visiting Assam and keen to see our rich cultural History.

Awesome place for anyone who likes exploring Museum. Museum building is very big & there is lot to see & explore. It has lot of information related to NE culture, their history, their traditional clothes, sculptures. Manuscripts of various era are also there. Coins used in different era is also present there. It also has a section where objects from Indus valley civilization & Harappan Civilization are kept. Only one cons is that one may feel humidity inside & fans present there aren't working well. Ticket price- Rs 20/adult

Assam State Museum is little bit small and containing less things but still the things are attractive. The ground floor is full of sculpture.. the 1 st floor is full of artistic works , full of paintings and all. But 2 nd floor is most attractive of all it has lots of mini model of village. They are proper enough to capture the view of village. If you are student then take the I'd with you it would help you to get tickets in less fare.

A treasure house of the rich culture and heritage of Assam. The museum houses different art forms. There are the mask sculptures, various clothes of the indigenous people of the land, scenes depicting everyday lives of these people and many more. Apart from Assam, the museum also has artifacts preserved from other places. The main attraction is a village life scene made in reality. The place is a must visit tourist attraction in Guwahati. Also every time one visits the place, a lot of knowledge can be gained.

The Assamese pride and prosperity also reflected here. Need more publicity and modern technology to develop this museum as one of the best resourceful place in the country.

The museum is great but I was wondering why do they have to bring the 2nd world war artillery, machine gun and cannon ball launcher from Kohima and keep in Guwahati?? It should have let them preserve itself there in Kohima or Kisama. The WW II materials have nothing to do with Guwahati apart from keeping it but it's has a story to tell if they are preserved in Kohima Or Kisama. That's the Naga heritage where the great stories took place in real event in nearby villages....

The collection is really poor. A person who is new to Assam would never be able to learn about the state and its history from the museum. More than half of the Museum is closed for maintenance. There isn’t much collection available.

It’s an interesting museum to get a glimpse of Assam’s Past since 10th century onwards. But there are major shortcomings: 1. The articles Don’t have a Dynasty Named - which kingdom was ruler during that period - !!??? 2. Almost Zero amount of Palaeolithic and Neolithic articles- these leaves a Big Gap in continuous history of assam. 3. The articles needs more details on material , influences and dynasty. 4. Effort should be made to arrange articles in Chronological order.

a place full of worth and knowledge . So its a must visit to know about North East India . However the place demands *more* *maintainence* and *lighting* . Assam is known for Assam tea and Assam silk. The state was the first site for oil drilling in Asia. Assam is home to the one-horned Indian rhinoceros, along with the wild water buffalo, pygmy hog, tiger and various species of Asiatic birds, and provides one of the last wild habitats for the Asian elephant. You all can see Assam's culture

The Assam State Museum, previously Assam Provincial Museum, is located in the southern end of Dighali Pukhuri tank which is in the heart of Guwahati city, Assam. The Museum was established by the Kamarupa Anusandhan Samiti (Assam Research Society) in 1940. The late Kanklal Baruah was the founder and president. In the year 1953, it was taken over by the Assam State Government.

  • 5/5 Ritubrata S. 2 years ago on Google
Giving it a 5 star rating because of the collection present there that showcases so much about Assam, its history and its culture. The place deserve a high rating for that. Though, the maintenance left a lot to be desired. People won't come if the place is not kept properly. Also, lack of advertisement of the museum is a big disadvantage as people are not aware of the collections there.

  • 5/5 Archana K. 2 years ago on Google
It's a good place to gather knowledge about the history of Assam. Each exhibition is unique and useful. The artifact dates back centuries. Multiple levels are there. There is even a full size village on one of the floors. It's a completely different experience.

Not big museum. Can complete in 2 hours. Opens at 10am. ₹20 entry fees, ₹50 extra for taking photos with cell phone. All sections are not open, 2-3 sections are closed.

It's managed by the government. Museum same as other state government museums, various articles on display related to Assamese culture . Very near to Gauhati High Court, RBI, Gauhati Planetarium, and a 10 minutes walk from the railway station.

  • 5/5 Ajay K. 1 year ago on Google
This museum is divided into different sections like manuscripts, arms and ammunition, terracotta, epigraph, metallic sculptures and natural History. Assam village life style. 2nd world War. Very good museum.

A fine place to visit The campus is nice The location is good You have to pay some fees to click photos inside, so don't forget to pay that in the ticket counter. We had to come back and pay then only we were allowed. Or if you don't want any pics then it's up to you.

  • 5/5 Sumit S. 10 months ago on Google
A place for someone who would want to explore the old excavations. Beautiful sculpture from old times. A must visit. It's just Rs. 20 per head and I would suggest to take Rs. 50 ticket extra to have permission to click photographs. You won't be able to resist your temptation to click photographs.

Really interesting visit to the Assam State Museum. It had a whole range of artefacts, some going back thousands of years, other a few hundred, some relating to World War II and other even more recent The key was that these were all lovingly preserved and maintained as it showed assams history as well as indian history and how they two come together. Congrats to all those responsible

Assam State Museum is a huge one with many sections on various collections. The entry fee is nominal and the staff there tries to guide you through the museum. Some extension and renovation work is going on.

Its a must-visit for anyone interested in the cultural and historical heritage of Assam. It offers a comprehensive and informative experience in a serene and architecturally pleasing setting. Additionally, the region's climate, particularly during the winter months, is generally pleasant, making it a favorable time to explore the museum and other attractions in Assam.
