Belapur Fort is located in Mumbai Belapur Fort Location within Mumbai General information Type Fort Location Belapur, Navi Mumbai Coordinates 19.005524°N 73.028403°E Elevation 27 m (89 ft) Construction started 1560 Completed 1570 Destroyed 1817 Owner CIDCO Design and construction Architect Shazada Wal jah bahad History Built in 1560–1570 by the Siddis,[1] after they wrested control of the area from the Portuguese, it is located atop a hillock, near the mouth of the Panvel Creek. In 1682, the fort was recaptured by the Portuguese, who had managed to annex the regions controlled by the Siddis, near Belapur (at that time known as Shabaz). In 1733, the Marathas, led by Chimaji Appa, wrested control of the fort from the Portuguese. He had made a vow that if it were to be successfully recaptured from the Portuguese, he would place a garland of beli leaves in a nearby Amruthaishwar temple, and after the victory the fort was christened as Belapur Fort. The Marathas ruled the area until 23 June 1817, when it was captured by Captain Charles Gray of the British East India Company. The British partially destroyed the fort under their policy of razing any Maratha stronghold in the area.[2] During its active days, the fort stationed four companies each of 180 men, and 14 guns ranging from 4–12 pounds (2–5 kg) in weight. An underground tunnel is also supposed to exist, which many locals believe connects it to Gharapuri Island, the site of the Elephanta Caves.

It's small fort. It is in ruins. Government agency (cannot be archaeological survey of India) is trying to 'repair' the walls and buruj. The work is shoddy and looks garish. At best it would get converted into a cheap picnic spot for hordes of city dwellers. Views from the top are nice. On one side you can notice the new railway line to Uran and along side the sea port being built. On the other side is the creek Another unfortunate part is a building complex called 'Forest Hills' on the same hill as the fort and towering above the fort making it insignificant in comparison to the modernity

It's a very picturesque place and also have the best spots for bold photoshoots, specially when the weather is a bit rainy. It's so much peaceful and calm there, that you won't feel like coming back from there. Not many people goes there due to the monsoon in the second week of August, and so I kind of had a romantic time in nature's lap all around the fort. There are high stairs of stones to climb to the top of the fort but they can be a bit slippery due to the extra mosses during the monsoon.

The road that leads upto here is amazing you could cycle or take your car, finding parking maybe difficult. But the fort is currently being developed. You may visit it after June 2021 my guess but it looks magnificent even as it's getting developed and restored. Don't miss the small well or dam that's on the right side as you go up the road it looks very beautiful. Spotted a lot of beautiful birds and also it was very quiet.

Although marked on Google maps it is not easy to find the exact way which will to lead the fort. Take the service road opposite to Navi Mumbai municipal corporation. Then take the road which leads to CIDCO guest house. You will reach an dead end where there is a small hoarding from where the short climb to the fort starts. Only a fragment of the fort remains intact. I was very happy to see such marvel amidst the city.

Calm place, not so high from sea level. Somewhere 90m above from main road which ends at CIDCO guest house. You can experience fresh air 24*7. Doesn't seems historic now as it's surrounded by Urban area.

Once glorious past of Maratha History, the deteriorating and pathetic condition of the monument to be taken seriously and restoration to be done to restore the fading history due to crumbling watch towers, encroachments and construction around the foothill of the structure. It is misused by anti social elements.and bushes are not safe and have snakes. It has to be maintained properly with proper signage to reach . Glad to know the restoration going on.

Its a Bale Killa. A small size fort, overlooking the Uran bridge. Its a cool nice forested area, in a lane bang opposite the Corporation building on Palm Beach Road. Some restoration is going on. The view from the top most point of the fort is good can see the sea, although restricted viewing due to the run down ramparts. Never knew this fort existed. Was good fun to discover it by chance, on a morning walk. There is a Killa Gaothan at the base on one side and a few nice quiet societies on the other side of this jetting out area.

If you love to explore historical places, even then you might not enjoy it here. for, It lies in a dilapidated state. Govt. should take the necessary steps to maintain it. I personally do not feel so happy to explore this place. I try to reach here with the help of Google Maps but it moved me away. Could not understand form where to enter. Inquired with so many locals, and everyone had a different version to say. I have to walk around 2 km. to reach this place. Even after reaching this place you have to climb some path, climbing up was annoying. There was no proper street, direction, or guidance. A lovebird (teen couple) was there before us. Exploring with family might not satisfy you. The staircase to go up to the fort was not in good condition, any miss happening can occur at any time. The local authorities can do good if they install proper signals and directions.

Just some ruins. Need to climb to the highest point and look through the viewing ports and use some imagination to appreciate the strategic importance of the location of the fort. The construction of buildings in the vicinity and line of sight block most of the view of the creek but can still see some water body. Extremely easy climb of three minutes from the motorable road. But parking available only for about 3 cars at a time. Can visit once for the sake of history. Entry is free. No markings, or placards giving any information about the place and its history.

There is only a single rampart left standing, apart from some low walls. But it is inside a nice wooded area, and we spotted quite a few uncommon birds. Also, it was empty on Saturday morning

A great place to see the old beautiful remains of a fort. Located on a small hill right next to the CIDCO guest house, the fort offers a great experience of old times. You are welcomed with a watch tower right opposite the municipal corporation building which further takes you to a beautiful winding road up the hill. The entry is a little difficult to spot but there is an orange flag on a tree to the left that leads you to the fort. The fort can only be seen after a short hike through dense woods but that is where it's USP lies. I've heard that it is being revamped and made into a usable space but before the commercialisation takes place id recommend a visit to the fort and see it for its ruins and how traditional fort Architecture was on the sea shore.

A star shaped fort located at the cliff. I need to climb a few steps to reach the top, which could be tiring during summer weather. It is very nice to see the star based architecture and the centre well. View towers at the eight wing end. Better to visit during mild weather to avoid the tiredness

(Translated by Google) "Fort of Belapur". The village of Belapur is situated on a strategic place where the creek of Panvel meets the creek of Thane. The fort was built by the Portuguese in a village mainly inhabited by spiders. After Vasai, when Sashti Island came under the control of the Portuguese, the Portuguese built the fort of Belapur to keep an eye on the traffic flowing through the creek and to protect it from possible attack from the Marathas across the creek. The fort was built by the Portuguese at that time. After the battle of Panipat, Sadashivbhau's puppet was captured by Manaji Angreni at Belapur fort. On 12 April 1780, Captain Campbell recaptured the fort of Belapur but according to the treaty of 1782, the fort had to be returned to the Marathas. On 23 June 1817, Captain Charles Gray conquered the fort and incorporated it into the British Empire. Belapur Fort is a fort near the township of Belapur in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. The fort was built by the Siddis of Janjira. It was later conquered by the Portuguese, and then Marathas. In the early 19th century, the fort was captured by the British. After the British gained supremacy in the region, with the expansion of the Bombay Presidency, the strategic importance of the fort declined, and it fell into disuse.
