Really beautiful, white temple surrounded by water. Must visit at least once. Try to go there early in morning as during summer marble kinda gets hot to walk on. But water cleaning around the temple is much needed rn.

This temple in Nalanda is one of the holy temples of Bihar and is dedicated to Lord Mahavir- The Founder of Jain religion. This is a town without any sins. The temple has been surrounded by waters all around it with a lot of lotus in the water. It's opening time is 5:00 and the closing time is 20:00. The environment there is really great and appreciable. This is a must visit place in Nalanda. Go there and see it yourself, you will be mesmerized by the beauty of this place.

The temple is surrounded by multiple small Jain temples, and there is also a water temple in the middle of the lake. Visitors can buy food to feed the fish and turtles in the lake. The temple is a peaceful and serene place, and the environment is very relaxing. The temple is open to visitors throughout the year, and there is no entry fee. However, staying overnight in Pawapuri may not be easy as it is not a developed place.

The Jal Mandir meaning Water Temple, also known as Apapuri, in Pawapuri, meaning a town without sins, in the Indian state of Bihar, is a highly revered temple dedicated to Lord Mahavira, the 24th Thirthankara (religious preacher of Jainism) and founder of Jain religion, which marks the place of his cremation. Mahavira attained Nirvana (salvation) in Pawapuri in 528 BC. The temple has been built within a tank filled with red coloured lotus flowers. It is said that the temple was built by King Nandivardhan, Mahavira’s elder brother. It is one of the five main temples in Pawpuri, where the “Charan Paduka” or foot impression of Mahavira is deified.

We started from Patna, visited Nalanda and arrived at Pawapuri late afternoon. Took us approximately 45 minutes. Though the approach road can get congested during rush hour, there is ample space near the mandir - a fairly large free parking area is there 50 meters from the mandir entrance. There’s no certified guides available. Locals tell history and stories of the place, which is extremely significant for spiritual history of India. Didn’t find a restroom. There are snack shops available outside the mandir.

Pawapuri Jal Mandir is not just a place of serene beauty but also carries a rich historical significance. Steeped in history, this sacred site is the place where Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, attained nirvana. The temple stands as a testimony to ancient architecture and cultural heritage, offering visitors a glimpse into the spiritual journey of one of the most revered figures in Jain tradition. Exploring Pawapuri is not just a visit to a temple, it's a step back in time, connecting with the profound history and spirituality of the region."

The most venerable Jain pilgrim spot in Bihar is the Jalmandir temple complex at Pawapuri, 60 km in the southwest of Patna. It is here that Lord Mahavira breathed his last around 500 BC and was cremated. It is said that a huge crowd had gathered to witness the funeral of the Lord, and the demand for his ashes among the mourners was so great that a colossal amount of soil was removed from around the funeral pyre resulting in the creation of a water tank. The Jalmandir, a white marble temple, in the middle of a lotus pond marks the exact spot where Lord Mahavira was cremated. There is a constant crush of devotees at this temple. It is commonly believed that by praying here a devotee loses his sins. The area around the temple is a center for curio shops and religious artifacts. Another Jain temple called Samosharan is located little away from Jalmandir. The famous Jalmandir of Pawapuri aptly replicated in an exquisite poetry in marble at heart of Ara exudes grace and elegance. Sculptors and architects have displayed remarkable finesse in building a wonderful marble temple inside a tank, chockfull with captivating mass of lotus flowers. Within the tank is a forty feet long and four feet wide bridge, which is a gateway to the main temple premises. Enshrined within temple’s sanctum sanctorum is an intricate image of Lord Mahavira.

I visited this place with my parents on New year's Eve 2019. I've grown up in Bihar, but never really visited this historic landmark. The temple is pristine white, landed in the middle of a little pond and beautiful! It is maintained super well, very neat and has beautiful views of the surrounding. For a great perspective, visit during sunse.

Temple is dedicated to the Tirthankaras, particularly Lord Mahavir. It's speciality is its location inside a waterbody hence rightly named Jal Mandir. The lake is frequented by water birds ranging from common ducks to heron, pigmy goose. One can collect 'murhi' to feed them and they gather around you for beautiful clicks. The lake is full of algae possibly due to Jain staunch belief on letting nature be as it is. Surprisingly, there is no foul smell. The mandir is quiet, except for the birds chirping (watch attached video). Charan paduka of Mahavir is worshipped here. Pavapuri is where mahavir attained mahaparinirvan (final resting place). The structure is beautifully tiled. The boundary has arabesque. Apt for photography. One can spend 30-45 minutes around this place. Outside the jal mandir, there is small tuck shops and sugarcane juice sellers. One can get refreshing sugarcane juice here in hot summers. It is said to protect from heat stroke. Best time to visit: November to February Points of improvement : The floor of madir gets heated up quickly and makes it difficult to walk. Temple trust should lay carpet here for convenience of visitors. Feeding the water-birds needs to be regulated. Murhi is sold outside the mandir by local peddlers. Instead there can be dedicated shop for this. A rustic dilapidated boat was kept inside the lake. With all the algae, it does not seem to be functional. However, if a fee is charged for boating, it would not only help in maintenance of the water body, but also be useful for bird-watchers. Please upvote if review was helpful.

This is a jain temple located in Pawapuri. It is surrounded by water. The last jain guru attended salvation here which makes this place special. Come here early in the morning or at night because in summer the marble gets really hot and makes it difficult to walk on it. You can come here anytime in the winter. Don't forget to visit nearby temples as well. Many people don't know but there are various good temples nearby as well which are even better. P. S. - The entry to the temple is free of cost.

Pawapuri is the choicest of the Kalyanak (auspicious moments in a Tirthankar's life) places of Jainism. This is that great pious land where Lord Shree Mahavir Swami, the last Tirthankar of Jains, attained nirvana. Also, it was on the soil of Pawapuri that the Lord had delivered his first sermon. It bestowed enlightenment upon great souls like the great sage Indrabhooti Gautam. It is also a matter of great significance that the Lord selected the pious land of Pawapuri for laying down his mortal body. Continuously for sixteen sessions the Lord delivered his sermon before his 'nirvana'. Really, Bihar is that immensely fortunate state of India where the advent, enlightenment and the great departure of immortal personalities like Lord Mahavir and Buddha took place. Pawapuri and Rajgriha are both near each other. Both these places are holy pilgrimages of India. Journey to this place is the journey to the welfare-bestowing lands which have touched the feet of Lord Mahavir and Buddha. It has been the belief of Jainism that the 'Deepawali Parv' (festival of lights) had its auspicious beginning from this very place following the 'nirvana' of Lord Mahavir. The holy soil of this very Pavapuri had the good fortune of lighting the first light by way of introduction of 'Deepawali'. After the 'mahanirvana' of Lord Mahavir where the last rites of his sacred body were performed, people carried the soil of that place on their heads to their houses and respectfully placed it in their places of worship. Just as the 'Kalash' (pitcher) gets filled up drop by drop. Even if people had taken only a few pinches of the soil a pit would have been formed. But since thousands of people had done so, it is not surprising that a pit was formed at that place. King Nandivardhan, elder brother of Lord Mahavir found a pond and at the centre of it a temple was constructed which became famous as 'Jal-Mandir' (Water temple). This temple may not be very big, but, built in the middle of the pond surrounded by lotus flowers, it looks very beautiful and fascinating. Thousands and lakhs of people every year come to this water temple and offer their reverential floral homage to Lord Shree Mahavir. In the sanctum sanctorum of the water temple, the ancient foot-prints of Lord Mahavir have been auspiciously installed. Sitting near these foot prints for even ten minutes is sufficient to get rid of all the sins committed in this world. This place is so much energized by the halo of Lord Mahavir that even a visit to this place by a devotee is tantamount to acquiring the blessed company of an awakened an enlightened person. Near the water temple, there is one more big temple of Lord Mahavir, where the Lord is worshipped according to 'Digambar' rites. On proceeding a little farther, a grand temple called 'Samavasaran Mandir' is seen. Believably, this is that holy place where the Lord had delivered his last sermon. There is yet another huge temple in the middle of Pavapuri village. This is considered to be that place where the Lord had laid down his earthly body for his 'mahanirvan'. The 'rajjukshala' of king Hospital, renowned in history, was situated at this very place. King Hastipal was a subordinate ruler of Ajatshatru, emperor of Magadh. Near this temple a huge 'dharmshala' has been constructed as the resting place of the travelers. Really, the holy land of Pavapuri conveys the message of peace, devotion, sacrifice and salvation to all the people.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Mahavira, the founder of Jainism, and is situated in the middle of a large pond. The temple is accessible only by boat, which adds to the temple's unique and peaceful ambiance. The temple's architecture is breathtaking, and the intricate carvings and sculptures depict the life of Lord Mahavira. The temple's serene surroundings, with water lilies and lotus flowers in the pond, create a tranquil atmosphere that makes it an ideal place for meditation and introspection. Visitors to the temple are required to remove their shoes before entering the premises and should dress modestly out of respect for the sacredness of the temple. Overall, Pawapuri Jain Jal Mandir is a must-visit destination for those interested in Jainism or seeking a peaceful place for contemplation and reflection.

AMAZING TEMPLE TO VISIT.Pawapuri is one of the holiest sites for the followers of Jainism in India. Located about 93 km from Patna, near Rajgir, this is the place where Mahavira, the 24thTirthankara of Jainism is believed to have attained nirvana or liberation. Jain pilgrims throng the city to visit the beautiful marble temple dedicated to Lord Mahavira and believe they will be absolved of all their sins here. Visit it for its peaceful ambience, beautiful Jain architecture and a chance to shake off all your sins

About sixth century BC, Mahavira, the twenty-fourth Tirthankar last shrine of Jainism where the last rites were performed by the Gods on the occasion of Nirvana. By taking up the ashes of this holy place, a huge Lake was formed with blooming lotuses also known as Kamal Sarovar which measures 1451 feet in length and by 1223 feet wide. Sister of Lord Mahavira and King Nandivardhan built the temple, which is today world famous as the water-temple Pavapuri. Right side of the Lord the footprint of Gautam Ganadhar and Dharma Ganadhar on the left. Lord Mahavira's Nirvana took place on Kartik-Amavasya Deepawali: hence on this day Nilan Ladcha Jatde is Pawapuri's pride Establishment of Lord Mahavira's Dharma, first and last references like Deshna, Last Chaturmas and Mahanirvana etc. It's considered a pure land hence smoking, drinking, panapati gutka etc. in this holy place are strictly prohibited.
