A
very
servicable
gym
if
you
are
starting
out,
but
unusable
as
a
regular
haunt
if
you
are
flashing
V5
or
above.
The
setting
is
uninspired
(which
is
particularly
odd
as
the
same
team
sets
the
far
superior
redpoint
bouldering),
and
the
number
of
routes
to
climb
at
higher
grades
is
insufficient
to
really
develop
a
balanced
skillset,
particularly
when
compared
to
TCA
Mothership,
which
has
vastly
more
routes
available
at
those
grades
and
above.
It
is
clear
that
the
different
in
style
between
Redpoint
and
Flashpoint
is
intentional,
but
a
shame
that
the
setters
aren't
very
good
at
setting
in
the
comp
style
that
Flashpoint
is
trying
to
emulate,
the
result
being
that
most
climbs
at
Flashpoint
are
incredibly
prescriptive
in
how
they
must
be
tackled.
I
am
a
comp-style
climber
myself,
and
Flashpoint
setting
falls
woefully
short,
and
Redpoint
setting
sets
much
more
creative
comp
problems
in
passing
than
Flashpoint
ever
achieves.
To
some
extent,
this
is
the
result
of
Flashpoint
having
a
fairly
constrictive
collection
of
holds
in
each
of
their
colour
sets,
but
there
isn't
really
much
excuse
for
that
at
a
high-end
gym.
Learning
to
climb
hard
at
Flashpoint
will
not
be
enough
to
make
you
a
better
comp
climber
as
you'll
never
have
to
solve
problems
in
your
own
way,
and
it
will
not
be
sufficient
to
strengthen
your
fundamentals
either.
Additionally,
pricing
at
Flashpoint/Redpoint
is
absurdly
high
given
what
facilities
are
actually
available.
The
other
significant
Bristol
bouldering
competitor,
TCA,
are
almost
£100
cheaper
than
Flashpoint
for
an
annual
pass,
and
provide
significantly
better
gym
facilities
for
that
price.
TCA
also
offers
3-month
passes
to
students,
at
a
rate
that
is
slightly
better
than
Flashpoint's
annual
student
pass,
allowing
students
to
save
significantly
by
not
purchasing
membership
for
the
months
they
are
not
living
in
Bristol.
Even
Bloc,
the
other
Bristol
bouldering
gym
infamous
for
its
terrible
pricing,
has
better
annual
rates
than
Flashpoint,
with
their
student
price
being
£90
cheaper
than
Flashpoint!
The
comparison
is
even
worse
when
compared
to
chains
outside
Bristol.
Depot
Climbing
charge
£36
a
month
for
an
annual
membership,
which
continues
at
that
price
rolling
monthly
from
then
onwards,
allowing
you
to
cancel
your
memership
at
any
time
in
the
year
without
losing
out.
The
Climbing
Hangar
gyms
outside
of
London
charge
around
£30
a
month,
which
is
vastly
cheaper.
Flashpoint
might
argue
that
their
prices
gives
you
access
to
their
sites
in
Cardiff
and
Swindon,
but
realistically
how
often
is
any
member
going
to
make
use
of
that
offer?
(TCA
also
offers
this
for
their
Chippenham
and
Glasgow
gyms).
It
is
truly
absurd
that
Flashpoint
think
their
prices
are
justifiable,
particularly
given
the
subpar
service
they
offer.
To
end
on
a
positive
note,
the
food
and
drink
services
at
Flashpoint
and
Redpoint
are
great,
and
more
bouldering
gyms
should
have
alcohol
licences.
