Ashoka Pillar

Historical landmark

👍 Amazing bit of history from 3rd century BC. It was located to this site in 1867 by the British. The gate was locked so I was unable to go into the garden itself. People often mention pillar, located, gate, hospital, ashoka,

A pillar erected in 3rd century B.C by Ashoka, the Great, moved by Feroz Shah Tughlaq in 1356 A.D to this site, blown into pieces in a magazine explosion of the East India Company in 1719 A.D, restored by the British Raj in 1867 A.D, renamed Ajitgarh by the Government of India in 1972 to commemorate 25 years of freedom. I went early in the morning and the gate was locked, I think it's free to enter and appreciate its ancient beauty.

This ancient marvel is near North Campus and is confined into a very small area.. When we visited here the gate was locked, we asked security guard the reason! He said he can let us enter if we pay him some money (bribe!!!) We denied and said that we know it's open for all and as History graduates of DU we have been at this place earlier also.. After much argument he opened the gate.. Afterwards, We were able to gaze upon our glorious past.. While the maintenance was good but the experience got ruined due to aforesaid reason. The competent authorities seriously need to have a look upon implementation on the ground level. ☑️

It is only the ashoka pillar brought by Mohammad bin tuglak from meruth to Delhi ypu can find this fact on inscription. It is located on way from Hindu Rao hospital to Kashmiri gate and you can also pay visit to mutiny memorial just located 200m from it. You can also visit north Delhi ridge if you love exploring and tracking, in a city like Delhi you can find forested area taht is opened just 50m from ashoka pillar and the fencing is open to enter.

The building that houses the pillar is a three-storied structure built in rubble masonry. It has a large number of small domed rooms in the first and second floors, with links to the roof. Rooms on each floor have arched entrances, which are now stated to be used for pujas (worship). It is a pyramidal shaped structure with reducing size at each level with the pillar installed on the terrace of the building. It is conjectured that originally the pillar had a lion capital (similar to the Ashoka Emblem), which is the National Emblem of India. Feroz Shah is said to have embellished the top of the pillar with frescoes in black and white stone topped with a gilded copper cupola. But at present, what is visible is the smooth polished surface of the pillar, and an elephant carving added much later.

This place is situated near Barahindu Rao hospital and nearest metro station in Pul Bangash metro. This place has historical importance. However, this place has very little footfall, and it was locked. If you have an interest in history, then it's a must go place else you won't like it

My experience is good and this is located near mutiny memorial heritage. Nearest metro station is pullbangash (red line). The ashoka pillar was originally erected at meerut in the 3rd century bc by great king ashoka. it was removed thence and set up in the koshuk Shikhar place near this by Feroz Shah tuglaq in 1356. thrown down and broken into five pieces by the explosion of a powder magazine in 1713-1719. it was restored and set up in this place by British government in 1867.

A must visit. The pillar broke due to a burst magazine which was standing nearby, it was repaired and raised by the British. The Prakrit inscriptions are still visible. It is located in a circular enclosure in the middle of the road and one cannot enter the enclosure as the gate is locked. That said, one can click pictures of it if, you stand by the boundary wall.

This site is a site of historical significance and has been restored and under conservation by archeological survey of India. Also the Wikipedia introduction for this site is as follows : "The pillars of Ashoka are a series of columns dispersed throughout the Indian subcontinent, erected or at least inscribed with edicts by the Mauryan king Ashoka during his reign in the 3rd century BC. Of the pillars erected by him, twenty still survive including those with inscriptions of his edicts. Only a few with animal capitals survive of which seven complete specimens are known. Two pillars were relocated by Firuz Shah Tughlaq to Delhi. Several pillars were relocated later by Mughal Empire rulers, the animal capitals being removed. Averaging between 12 to 15 m (40 to 50 ft) in height, and weighing up to 50 tons each, the pillars were dragged, sometimes hundreds of miles, to where they were erected." One could also visit the 1857 mutiny memorial which is only about 300 meter walking distance from here.
