Like the Shish Gumbad, the name of the dignitary to whom this tomb is dedicated can only be speculated, because the name isn't mentioned anywhere. However it is a beautiful monument along with the adjoining mosque, so the person buried here could be as important a personage as a Sultan. The maintenance is better than that of the other monuments in the garden.

Bada Gumbad, also known as the 'Big Dome,' is a historical monument located in Lodhi Garden in New Delhi, India. It is one of the prominent structures within the garden and is known for its impressive architectural design. The Bada Gumbad is a large rectangular building with a dome on top, hence its name. It is believed to have been built during the reign of the Lodhi dynasty, which ruled over Delhi in the 15th and 16th centuries. The exact purpose of the building is uncertain, but it is commonly thought to be a tomb or a gateway to a larger complex that no longer exists. The structure is made of red sandstone and features intricate architectural details. The exterior walls are adorned with decorative patterns and arches, showcasing a fusion of Islamic and Hindu architectural styles. The dome crowning the building is one of its most striking features, creating a visually appealing silhouette against the sky.

The Bada Gumbad is a Lodi Dynasty era building that comprises a mosque and what’s thought to be a large building that’s either intended to be a tomb or a gateway into the mosque. Some of the nicest features include the deceptive double storey that’s actually single, the fluted minarets that look like precursors of the Qutub Minar design, and the richly decorated arches of the mosque. This building is set in the lovely Lodi gardens and is a popular photo spot, especially it seems for wedding couples. Worth visiting along with the nearby Shish Gumbad. Both are photogenic.

It is a beautiful place, yes the interiors are defaced with scribblings but the architecture is beautiful. It is located within the Lodhi Gardens and as the name suggests it is the tomb of Sikander Lodi.

Lodhi garden is near Khan market metro station and is huge one. The garden has greenery and is a good family picnic spot. There are tombs inside particularly of Sikandar Lodi. One can spend some leisure time under the trees and relax. There is no ticket here.

The Bada Gumbad Masjid or the big dome mosque is located inside the Lodi Garden and is made with the typical Lodi style that uses decorative techniques of incised and painted limestone plaster. The other captivating feature was the Jharokhas that are cantilevered enclosed openings. The Jharokhas served the purpose of illumination, ventilation, and peeping out of the structure and keeping a watch on the surroundings. Based on the inscriptions on its arches, the time is estimated to be around 1494 which is also mentioned on the plaque installed nearby. There is also a Mehman Khana or Guest Hall adjoining the mosque. Another unique thing I noticed about the Big Dome was that it appears double-story from the outside but is a single space from the inside. ♿ Accessibility Features: Yes=Ramp access. Yes=A wheelchair-accessible Entrance. Yes=A wheelchair-accessible Restroom/Toilet. Yes=A wheelchair-accessible Seating. Yes=A wheelchair-accessible Parking.

Bada Gumbad was supposedly built by Sikandar Lodi, around 15th century. It's actually one of the first fully constructed domes of this era. It serves as a gateway to the Friday mosque adjoining the domed building and a guesthouse. The mosque and bada Gumbad are both made from Delhi quartzite and also other colored stones like red sandstone and also blue colored tiles. Beautifully decorated with incise plastering and blue tile work.

Bara Gumbad (literally "big dome") is a medieval monument  located in Lodhi Gardens In  Delhi, India. It is part of a group of monuments that include a Friday mosque(Jama Masjid) and the "mehman khana" (guest house) of Sikandar Lodhi, the ruler of the Delhi Sultanate. The Bara Gumbad was constructed in 1490 CE, during the reign of the Lodhi dynasty. Its construction is generally attributed to Sikandar Lodhi, and it is believed to have the earliest constructed full dome of any building in Delhi. Bara GumbadNative name Hindi: बड़ा गुम्बद Bara Gumbad at Lodhi Garden Type historic monumental  mosque LocationLodhi Gardens coordinates ° 35 ′ 34. 40 76 ″ N 77 ° 13 ′ 12.6480 ″ Area361 square metres (3,886 sq ft) (Bara Gumbad floor area)Built1490 CEArchitectural style(s)Islamic  and Hindu architecture governing body Archaeological Survey of India  and NDMCOWNERGOVERNMENT of Delhi Scheduled monument Official name: Bara Gumbad Location of Bara Gumbad in Delhi The monument is situated near the Tomb of Sikander Lodi  and Shikha Gumbad. Although the three structures, which share a common raised platform, were all built during the Lodhi reign, they were not constructed at the same time. The intended purpose of the builders of Bara Gumbad is unclear: it may have been intended as a free-standing tomb, but no tombstone has been identified, or as a gateway. The area in which Bara Gumbad is situated was formally called Khairpur village. Bada Gumbad was constructed in 1490 CE, and is believed to have the earliest constructed full dome of any building in Delhi.  Its construction is generally attributed to Sikandar Lodhi. A Mihrab (prayer niche) in the Friday mosque  (Jama Masjid) of the Bara Gumbad gives the date of construction as 900  (Anno Hegirae) of the Islamic lunar calendar. Including the bada gumbad there are four monuments in the Lodhi Gardens; the other three being Tomb of Sikander Lodhi, Shisha Gumbad  and the tomb of Muhammad Shah (who belonged to the Sayyid Dynasty).  The Bada Gumbad is situated approximately 400 metres (1,300 ft) southwest of the tomb and 75 metres (246 ft) south of Shisha Gumbad. During the rule of Sikander Lodhi, the Bara Gumbad, the adjacent mosque and the "mehman khana" (guest house) were constructed. The Bara Gumbad is speculated to serve as a gateway to the Friday mosque. However owing to the constitutions date, placement and stylistic differences the theory of gateway is not supported. The purpose and significance of the Bara Gumbad is unknown and to date remains a mystery. The Friday mosque was constructed in 1494 CE. It was the first mosque to be built in a style that first appeared during the Lodhi Dynasty. Some historians suggest that the Bara Gumbad was built by an unidentified noble in 1490 CE, before being appropriated by Sikander Lodhi in 1494 CE, to provide an entryway to his mosque. Simon Digby  argued, that the Bara Gumbad served as a gateway to a large walled enclosure, which included the Shisha Gumbad, identified by the same scholar as the tomb of Bahlul Lodi. Initially, all the monuments were built independently, and were not in one confine. In the early twentieth century, a park was developed, bringing the four monuments in one confine. The park was inaugurated on 9 April 1936 by Lady Willingdon, the wife of Viceroy  Lord Willingdon. The park was originally called the Lady Willingdon Park after her, but was renamed to Lodhi Gardens after independence of India in 1947. t is speculated that the Bara Gumbad was constructed to provide a gateway to the nearby mosque or a large walled enclosure. Although the structure does not house any tomb, there is a platform in the central courtyard that suggests the structure to be a burial place.

The monument was constructed during the reign of Sikander Lodi, the son of Bahlol Lodi, who ruled for twenty-eight years from AD 1489-1517. His empire extended from Punjab to Bihar and he built his capital at Agra. 'Bada Gumbad' literally means the building with a big (bada) dome (gumbad). Lodhi Gardens aka Lodi Gardens traces its history back to 1444 when the tomb of Mohammed Shah, a Sayyid Dynasty ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, was erected here by his son and the last ruler of the dynasty, Ala-ud-din Alam Shah.

Believed to be a gateway from the time of the Lodi dynasty (1451-1526). One of the biggest and finest examples of the Lodi period in Delhi.

Bada Gumbad mosque is a tiny rectangular three domed mosque approached through an ornamented five-arch entrance. Built in 1494, the interiors of the mosque are richly decorated with intricate calligraphy, floral and geometric designs, Quranic inscriptions. The ceiling under the main dome displays profuse paintwork in red & blue. The western wall with mihrabs (Mecca-facing wall faced by Muslims while praying) are ornamented The back wall with tapering turrets & jharokha on the sides are unique features of the Gumbad

GETTING THERE The nearest metro station is Vasant Vihar on Magenta Line of Delhi Metro. From the metro station, you can either take an auto or walk to the monument. THINGS TO DO IN & AROUND Vasant Vihar is a plush residential area in South Delhi. You can visit the markets of Vasant Vihar and malls in the Vasant Vihar market. There are also numerous cafe and restaurants in the neighbourhood which offer lip-smacking food. OPENING AND CLOSING TIMING The monument is not open for public visit. Situated in the DDA Park, people can watch the exterior walls, rest is prohibited for public entry. The timings for the DDA Park is 6 am to 11 pm. ENTRY FEES There is no entry fee. BEST TIME TO VISIT The monument inside the park can be visited throughout the year, but the winters are the best time to visit. Sightseeing tour in Delhi can be excruciating during summers, hence the colder temperature of winters is ideal for exploring Delhi. Bara Lao Ka Gumbad Delhi Not many can claim to be living in a 600 years old heritage home, but that was the case with the Bara Lao Ka Gumbad. Before Archaeological Survey of India undertook the monumental site under its care, a family had been living inside the monument for more than 3 generations. Located in the DDA Park in Vasant Vihar, the Lodi Era monument was abandoned by the authorities for a very long period of time, leading to illegal encroachments. One of the forgotten monuments in Delhi, Bara Lao Ka Gumbad once exhibited the royal architecture of Lodi dynasty. But after the encroachers started living there, the monument was converted into makeshift living place. The walls were painted and damaged which led to authorities regaining the ownership of the place. Since then, the walls have been renovated, the main tomb’s damages have been repaired and most of the monuments have been restricted to the general public in order to preserve the heritage site and ward of the encroachers.

More crowded than Safdarjung Tomb and Md. Sayyid's Tomb combined but great place for hanging out and clicking photos. The engraved scriptures of the adjacent mosque are astoundingly clear and almost untouched. Surely recommended to visit and give sometime. A main reason why I would like to visit Lodhi Garden again.
