Ghantaghar
(literally
clock-tower)
is
a
place
in
the
center
of
Delhi's
Chandni
Chowk,
where
an
iconic
clock
tower,
called
the
Northbrook
Clock
Tower,
stood
in
the
early
20th
century.
The
clock
tower
was
built
in
1870
and
stood
there
until
it
partially
collapsed
in
the
1950s
and
was
subsequently
demolished.
The
term
"Chandni
Chowk"
(translation:
Silver
or
Chandni
Chowk)
originally
referred
to
this
spot
and
later
came
to
designate
the
entire
street.
The
Clock
Tower
is
considered
the
center
of
Delhi,
and
it
still
serves
as
the
center
of
major
civic
events.
Today
it
is
an
open
and
congested
area.
The
Delhi
Town
Hall
is
located
just
north
of
this
site.
It
was
probably
the
oldest
clock
tower
in
India,
having
been
constructed
before
Rajabai
Clock
Tower,
Mumbai,
1878,
Hussainabad
Clock
Tower,
Lucknow,
1881,
Secunderabad
Clock
Tower,
Secunderabad,
1897
and
Allahabad
Clock
Tower,
Allahabad,
1913.
While
this
clock
tower
is
long
gone,
the
place
is
still
called
Ghantaghar
within
Old
Delhi.
The
clock
tower
was
the
location
of
some
of
the
events
related
to
the
Indian
independence
movement.
On
30
March
1919,
British
soldiers
killed
many
protesters.
It
is
still
a
very
popular
place
to
hold
protests.
