Great place for family visit. Location is terrific. Not a big aquarium but they have a diverse collection. Loved the jelly fish and the shark exhibits. The 20 minutes show in the Neptune theater was super educational. This show is not advertised enough so the administrators are reading, please make sure your website highlights this experience of this unique Globe screen and the information you provide. Very nice gift shop. Once you step out, there is the beautiful pier and a trail where you can see lots of birds. Recommend this place to all!

When you get there, there is a circle to drop off people before parking. Parking can be pretty tight. I will say I would have given a 5 if not for our ticket lady. So, online you can get tickets early and if your a member at another aquarium get a few $$ off. We'll she wanted to see our membership card for the Shed aquarium but they don't have cards anymore just online qr code so this gal Felicity didn't believe us and we already showed our drivers license and we're standing with out 4month old in 90 degree heat... then she asked if we could let others through and stand off to the side. Unbelievable. Eventually she let us in but more difficult than needed. It otherwise a nice small aquarium can walk through in an hour easy. For bday kid parties they have a craft room area and a pier where staff help kids try fishing. Bathrooms are inside and outside which is nice. I wished there were more shaded spaces other than the nature trail.

$12 for 13 n up you have to buy online. Loved this little aquarium. Small enough to enjoy, large enough to be memorable. Staff is helpful. Watching the sharks be fed was cool. Kids will enjoy the touch ponds with sting rays and such. There is a fun garden to walk with activities for kids too.

We were staying down on Hatteras Island and decided to take a little trip up north and check out Roanoke Island and some of the attractions that they offered up there. They ended up eating and checking out the aquarium. This place isn't the biggest aquarium that you'll go to but we thought it had a lot of really great things to see. I think the sea turtle rehabilitation exhibit would be amazing to see but unfortunately it was under reconstruction when we were there. I think that would probably one of the biggest attractions. I would recommend checking this place out if you get a chance. The cost to get in is very low compared to a lot of major aquarium attractions like this and they have a lot of really nice things to see.

Very neat Aquarium. It is a little small, but for being on an island it is well designed and has many different exhibits and options for families. You are able to pet stingrays at this location. The gift shop is nice and has a fair selection. Outside has a nature trail for children (and adults) with a garden and a neat picnic area. A pier is also accessible from the inner part of the aquarium.

So many wonderful things to see here. All different types of fish, plants, reptiles, shells, etc. See the wonder in the eyes of children seeing sharks up close for the very first time. An educational experience not only for the young but old as well. Such a peaceful place. No matter how many times you go, there is always something new to see.

Excellent aquarium, especially for the area. The full size shark tank was impressive and super fun for the kids, as well as the jellyfish tanks. They have a turtle rescue area (with a kids exhibit where they can do stations to rescue and release a turtle model) and a touch-a-stingray and crabs area as well, kind of awesome re the latter not gonna lie. Not the biggest place but the fish and reptiles were exotic, including zebra fish and albino crocodiles. Definitely worth a visit! It gets crowded quick though, try going toward open like 9-9:15am.

We were visiting from Hampton Roads where an aquarium ticket can cost $30 so I was excited to see how cheap the tickets were. My favorite animal is the Sea Turtle, so I was excited to learn about how this aquarium cares for injured sea turtles at their rehabilitation center. A great reasonably priced day excursion for the family.

Yes it is a smaller aquarium but it is a great stop for kids of all ages but for my 4 year old it was a great escape from the heat and she loves animals so it wasn't too overwhelming for her. Good prices but just one thing is that if you reserve more tickets than what you use it just gets donated to the aquarium which I don't have a problem with but it was not stated when reserving the tickets nor was the option give if I wanted to do that it was just automatically done. I just suggest either putting that on the website when reserving or give people the option to donate or want a refund.

The outer banks is such a great place to vacation and I’m glad we found this aquarium . The kids enjoyed it …. So many things to see and petting the sting rays was so cool and slimy . The pier was beautiful but very windy . We did go during the winter time so I can imagine summer time feeling amazing.

It's definitely a fun visit if you are in the Outerbanks. You absolutely must book online in advance. I highly recommend going in the morning before the crowds arrive. We went in the afternoon and it was packed. We were still able to walk around and see everything, but It was difficult with how cramped it is. Especially if you have kids, GO IN THE MORNING. We were not able to let our little one do the interactive sea turtle rescue without waiting for 30 minutes, so we skipped it. Unfortunately, we did not get to see the sea otters as they were not out at our time of visit. It was really cool to be able to go into the rehabilitation area where the sea turtles are. We have never seen a large sea turtle before, and it was an awesome experience getting to talk with caretakers. The last area of the aquarium where the big tank is, is beautiful. There is also a projection on the floor that is fun for little ones to jump around on the water and sea life. The gift shop is wonderful. They have everything you could want and more!

We loved this aquarium. It was perfect for my toddler. Very nice and clean. Friendly staff and lots of cool sea creatures. We got there shortly after open at 9 am and the tickets were already sold out until 12 pm. Book in advance online for sure so you don't waste a drive out or wait in the car forever. We would go back again. It was cool.

This place exceeded our expectations! We began our adventure at the amphibian and reptile exhibits; which included an albino alligator! Then we proceeded to the aquarium; there was staff everywhere to guide and provide you with educational information. The aquarium also had petting ponds where you could touch all sorts of sea life like stingrays! Once outside, we took a walk around the garden where we encountered huge animatronic dinosaurs! To end, we went into the Butterfly Bungalow where there were hundreds of free-flying exotic butterflies!

The Aquarium on Roanoke Island is a nice gem of a surprise - kids love it. You can get through the exhibits in one hour - shorter or longer, if you desire.

Smaller aquarium that was a great stop on a very windy day. We spent about 1-2 hours looking around and playing in the touch pools. We also paid extra to go crabbing with the staff, Alex. Despite the crazy winds and waves (we got really wet that day) we caught a bunch of crabs and pin fish. My kids had a blast and it was probably the highlight of our trip! Alex was great and called beforehand to warn us of the splash risk - but we are an adventuring family! Would highly recommend an extra program like this to anyone wanting a fun learning experience! Alex was VERY knowledgeable, fun, and minded our safety as well. Great day!

Wonderful time! All the staff members we encountered were extra friendly! You could tell they really enjoyed their jobs. We loved seeing the albino alligator! They have a turtle hospital and an activity to do for kids to help treat pretend turtles! Super informative. Definitely recommend taking a trip here!

This aquarium was very fun! All the staff we encountered were super friendly. I loved the great picture spots near the otters, the jellyfish, and the sharks. It was a great place to visit in the morning before checking out since it doesn’t take super long to visit the aquarium (~90 min or so). (The gift shop was also full of unique and not so pricey things). Loved the visit!

Wonderful aquarium. Truly enjoyed walking around and seeing all the exhibits. The turtle diagnostic center cab not be missed. The journey you take provides amazing insight into turtles and the work being done to keep their species alive. The touch tank for the rays and other sea life is lots of fun for young and old alike. The jellyfish exhibit is stunning and of course the sharks are amazing to watch swim around. The outside area is super interactive, especially for the younger ones and the water exhibit is full of amazing details. If you take some time to dig in the gravel/rocks you will be sure to find a shark tooth or two! (They are really small so look closely but they are there and it's super fun to find them!) The aquarium is worth a visit during your OBX vacation. Not to be missed!

Pretty nice experience. Has a variety of sea life to view. They do offer online ticket booking service for an easy entry. It’s advisable to buy your ticket ahead to avoid disappointment after visiting. You can pet few of sea life creatures. Souvenir store and photo booth (pay to pickup copy of pictures) Very scenic walking trail outside! Will visit again.

Always a wonderful visit and the staff are always adding more features and maintaining current exhibits. I am a jellyfish lover so that area fascinates me, but my kids love the immersive and multimedia experiences offered at the touch tanks, the interactive animated areas, and the shark tank areas. Great place to visit when in the area. Even though we only come once a year, we love supporting them with a membership because they do such good work..

Great spot to check out on a rainy day or just to get the kids out of the house. Sea turtles, otters, sharks, jellyfish + more. This particular aquarium does a "trick or treat under the sea" annually around Halloween' if you buy tickets for that (in advance) you will not regret it. We've been countless times over the years and never had a disappointing visit.

My family love aquariums. This one was really nice. Be sure to reserve tickets early in the morning or the night before as tickets sell out quick. The parking lot was nearly full when we arrived. There are timed tickets but the place was still rather crowded. There is also a little outdoor section for kids to play. Worth a visit.

Our family loved this aquarium. You have to buy your tickets online in advance and select a time slot. It's right on the water and has a wonderful outside area for the kids to run around, a cafe to get lunch and a beautiful dock. The aquarium was the perfect size for my two young children age one and four. We absolutely loved the sea turtle rehab center. My four year old liked going to the different stations with his fake sea turtle and going through the different scenarios on what what wrong and how to help it. And what was even better, the real life turtle rehab center was right next door so we could watch the real life animals being helped. Will definitely be back!

This aquarium was well taken care of and one of the best experiences I’ve had. All of the museum attendants were very friendly and helpful during our stay. There is also an area where you can pet sting rays. If you’re at OBX this is well worth a visit.

We've been to a few different aquariums and this aquarium seemed to be worth the price of admissions. While it does take some time to go through and there are plenty of exhibits, the spaces are tight and narrow. We were fighting crowds and constantly around lots of people. There were a few open opportunities for me to snap a few good pics, but you can also see how crowded it can be too. Being as tight and crowded as it was, strollers were a nuisance, especially the big ones. If you have a pop-up, use it. The other thing that really annoys me at any aquarium and even most zoos, are when adults feel the need to stand in front of an exhibit for an extended period of time while children are waiting to see. I'm sure as an adult, you've already seen most of what's there, stand back and let the kids enjoy the experience. Same goes for those helicopter parents, your kids arent going to disappear if you give them a few more feet. Overall it was a decent experience for the afternoon at a decent value for the family.

Great place to visit. There are a variety of exhibits with fish, alligators, Jellyfish and turtles. You can visit the turtle hospital and learn about the current residents - there us also an interactive area as part of this. Want to touch a Stingray? You can do that too. Make sure to spend some time at the giant shipwreck tank - it's a great place for a photo and some Shark watching.

Very well done exhibits. The treatment center was very interesting to visit and the staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. It's a smaller aquarium compared to those in big cities but worth the money and a must-see if visiting the Outer Banks. Timed entry helps control crowds but parking was still difficult.

Nice regional aquarium. Major focus on the aquatic life of the Outer Banks. Also includes some historical interpretation of the region, particularly its well deserved reputation as the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Very cool sea turtle rehabilitation area with interactive exhibits for young children. Nice outdoor area surrounding the aquarium. Note, you have to buy tickets in advance. Popular times sell out on peak days so plan accordingly.

My teen and I enjoyed a beautiful day with the sea turtles at this aquarium. She kissed a frog, touched some sea urchins, and much more. The staff were very knowledgeable when giving information about the sea turtles and how they are working to increase the population. There was one turtle that was the size of my Honda! We look forward to our next trip to the Outer Banks and will definitely be back to see how these turtles are doing. Thank you for all you’re doing!!!

Great place to take your kids! They had plenty of interactive things for the kids to participate in and a very good variety of the diversity in habitats all the animals live in. Make reservations online as they are required! That being said, it's also not slammed busy. At least not on a Friday at 3 pm. So it was really nice to let kids have fun and run.

The state of North Carolina operates several world-class aquariums that are located throughout the stet. This Roanoke island location is one of them and it's EXCELLENT. Not only is is a great aquarium, but it's location is close to the water and there are some great water views and activities for guests. It's also a nice place for bird watching. My suggestion is to choose a less-busy day, and really enjoy yourself!

I have to admit that I wasn't expecting such a great aquarium in a place that sees mostly seasonal visitors. Great exhibits. The staff/volunteers at the touch tank were so knowledgeable about everything in their exhibit. The outdoor space and gazebo on the Sound was worth the trip just for the tranquility.

Cute little aquarium. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the animals. There are signs explaining what animals are in the tanks where no staff are. Expensive for such a small aquarium. I was fairly disappointed. The fact that the kids got to touch rays placate them. However they had the touch area roped half way off so all the people were crowded in one spot. The corralled all the customers into small areas.

Our trip to this aquarium was amazing! While it was not a huge facility, there are plenty of things to see. I really loved the jelly fish room, and there is a care facility for sea turtles where they explain how they help the turtles recover and then release them. I highly recommend visiting if you travel to obx!

Wonderful place! I enjoyed the different species of animals they have available to see. I'm a huge fan of reptiles, so I was really happy to see so many of them here in display! My only suggestion is to give the snakes a bit more room to move about for exercise, and a couple of more hides for security. :) Tiger sharks are my favourite, and the one here is gorgeous! The folks that work here were also very pleasant. The gal at the Touch Tanks was knowledgeable and friendly. Overall, very fun, and I'd recommend it for sure!

Love this place and have been coming for 30+ years! My family and I have wonderful experiences every time we visit. The staff is always friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Mask rules are enforced, so make sure you have them over your nose and mouth! The aquarium beautifully represents the ecosystems in eastern North Carolina. It's not huge, but a great size for families and lots to do with younger children. So much to see including snakes, alligators, otters, turtles, sea turtle hospital, touch tanks, jellyfish, sharks and tons of fish! Beautiful grounds to explore and even a butterfly garden. Take your time to explore, it's worth it!

We had a great time at the aquarium. My son loved it. Hand sanitizer accessible all over and masks required. Was super clean as well. Friendly staff and a beautiful view.

Really well done aquariums with great views and fish to see. They did a fantastic job with the space they have and it feels much bigger than it is. The Monitor tank is a huge highlight, but the everything is really great to see. The big stuff is cool but they nailed the small fish too, and they have interesting habitats. I love it, but I want more of it. You can take your time and realistically see everything in 75 minutes or so.

Small aquarium, definitely not anything huge. However, it was still very fun if you have small children. My kids who are ages 4 and 2 had a great time here. The ticket prices are bad for what you get. We only took us a hour and a half to go through the entire thing. I say it's a must do once if you're ever in the area.

We loved the aquarium and learning about the attached sea turtle rescue. Our favorite part was by far the otters and then the sharks. Also, some cool life-saving station history about real heroes is a great stop.

This aquarium has been a must visit for many years and has consistently added new features. I really appreciated the online ticket orders and time frame to spread out the customers. That worked out great for us and gave our family the best experience in years. Our kids enjoyed making the penny momentous and some of the outside items as well. Keep up the great work and knowledge sharing!

Beautiful aquarium, a lot of different species. They have a sea turtle rehabilitation area, interactive displays with plenty of information about the various fish in the tanks. FYI - Masks are required, and you have to purchase admission tickets prior to going.

The director was fantastic and answers lots of questions that our companions had. Loved the beautiful fish. Enjoyed the jellies, stingrays and horseshoe crabs too! Quaint but enjoyable experience

We stopped here on vacation and thoroughly loved our visit! It is a smaller aquarium but more then makes up for it with their interactive exhibits and fantastic staff. Their sea turtle diagnostic exhibit was really cool and you can actually view first hand the real tanks and talk to the staff that work to rescue the turtles. Admission was very inexpensive and definitely worth it.

Fantastic aquarium with a lot of different species and a huge Sand Tiger Shark!! So many great things to learn and see here!

  • 5/5 Sierra C. 2 years ago on Google
Absolutely fantastic aquarium they keep the place clean and they have an amazing variety of sea life like sharks, jellyfish, sea horses, turtles, and so much more!! You even get to pet little stingrays and sea urchins! The staff are super friendly and very knowledgeable about all the sea life. This is a very family friendly place to take the family to learn about sea life.

We love stopping at the aquarium! This trip, the 2yr old loggerhead sea turtle was my favorite! He was so much fun to watch! This time we got the activity book for kids ($3). Around the aquarium, inside and outside, little history about different things in the area. You rub with a pencil to have the picture rubbed on your book.

Always a stop when I travel to OBX. The aquarium has tons of interactive things, as well as a sea turtle rescue center! One of their newer attractions is a jellyfish area full of blacklights that look really cool. They have a great shark tank too.

For this to be one of the smaller aquariums I have been to, it didn't feel small. Had lots of neat stuff to see and a very knowledgeable staff. The view off the pier at the end of the tour was awesome!

A wealth of fun and information, especially when the weather keeps you from exploring the outdoors. Great fun, well priced, mobility friendly. Those with vision impairment may need extra support to fully enjoy some darker exhibits.

This is a must see on your trip to the Outer Banks! I can’t believe I waited so long to visit it. The staff is very friendly and what they are doing with the turtle rehabilitation is just amazing. I highly recommend you check the place out! They also do events and have a beautiful sound side pier for wedding ceremonies and lots of lawn space for large groups.

Loved this place 💕 The outside trails and shark tooth digging pit for the little ones were just as much fun as the inside aquarium.

Nice aquarium. Our kid enjoyed this place very much!

  • 4/5 Thomas R. 2 years ago on Google
I give this 4 out of 5 stars because the largest exhibit in this place was the gift shop. There really is no way around it. Other than that, the kids had an absolutely wonderful time, and the staff is very kind and helpful.

We decided to go here to fill some time while waiting for check in time at our hotel. We were not disappointed. We decided to take a historical/educational family vacation this year, and kicked it off with a visit to this aquarium. This place is really cool! The price for entry is great and there is a ton to see. We really enjoyed the gift shop too.

  • 5/5 Michael H. 2 years ago on Google
Very good family experience. Wish they had a few more exhibits and another large tank and larger surf zone tank. I don't mind my tax dollars going here!

  • 5/5 Bill R. 1 year ago on Google
Really cool and interactive. Yes, the kids loved it: the stingray tunnel and touch tank were one of many things that kept them engaged, while the exhibits and variety of wildlife there was awesome. The facility, inside and ot was very well maintained, while the drive from OBX through Mateo to get there was unhurried and pleasant. We'll be going back

The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island is a wonderful oasis on a hot, muggy day. Excellent and informative displays that are kid friendly. The large shark tank is a great place to sit and watch the fish swim by. The sting ray petting tank is fun if you are brave enough to try. And, the jelly fish display is mesmerizing. The grounds outside are just as beautiful. So, if you and the kids are tired of the beach, or just need a break from the sun, take a short drive and visit this aquarium. But, plan ahead, reservations are required so that they can keep the crowd manageable and your visit enjorable.

You need to have a reservation ahead of time. Luckily we came during off season so they accommodated us but they made that clear. Great array of marine animals, clean and aesthetically pleasing. The sea turtle care area is a very interesting and impactful exhibit. Prices are very reasonable.

Really fun visit for the kids. The outdoor trails are a fun way to start the journey. Very good waterfront views. The inner portion is very well decorated and designed. The sea turtle rescue portions and the activity after it was really cool and a great learning experience for the kids. There is a hands on portion where you can touch the horseshoe crabs and other various things. We really enjoyed the experience here and recommend anyone visiting the area try it out

I was pretty much satisfied with my trip to this aquarium. I haven't been to an aquarium in a long time but it was a very exciting adventure for me and my family. We all had tons of fun seeing the animals and just being there. The gift shop was stocked and we all found something that we wanted. It's a very friendly place, the workers were all very friendly and welcoming and the interior of the whole thing was so pleasant. Definitely kid friendly but also interesting for the adults. Would recommend if you are in the area. Prices weren't bad either.

Recommend online reservations. Very, very busy. Plenty of outdoor and indoor room. Exhibits are very good. Live sea turtles and otters. The grandchildren love this place. Souvenirs are pricey, though.

there are so many adorable animals here! there are a lot of fun opportunities for kids here too, like interactive screens, touch tanks (stingrays and urchins), and the turtle rehab center! the entry fee is really cheap, and really worth it! also the adopt-a-animal is really fun, you get a plushie, adoption certificate and stickers and it helps feed and take care of the animal you chose!

My brother and I went to this aquarium while on a camping trip in the OBX. It was a pretty nice little aquarium. It takes about an hour or so to walk through and has some cool fish. The Jellyfish area was neat and seeing the sea turtles in recover was pretty cool too. The price of admission is pretty good considering it's a smaller aquarium. I would recommend anyone coming to the area to check this out.

I had a flight with OBX airplanes. Highly recommend ( do an hour 10-45 isn’t long enough) although pilot was amazing and informative should have gotten more. On me.. Aquarium was very informative, thoughtful of the aquatic life staff was acknowledging and informative, kind and helpful ❣️Thank you for all that you do. I also noticed there was an animal rescue across the street and the sweet darling girl that was so informative to the crabs, stingrays, and those that live in shell life was walking a beautiful labor retriever, after teaching me of the life of such. I adore this adventure I had there. Again thank you

This was quite a small aquarium for being right on the ocean. However the price reflected this, so I wasn't disappointed. Other than the sea life, they had some really nice features on the outside, like a pier and walking trail. Oh and apparently you are supposed to buy tickets in advance for a certain time. Despite going to the website, we didn't see this. When pulling into the parking lot, there was a large sign announcing this. We went on the website while sitting in the parking lot and it said there were no available tickets left for the day. We had someone from our group go to the customer service desk and we were able to get in- all 12 of us.

When in Roanoke do visit this educational attraction. Aquarium's most famous attraction, the 285,000-gallon Open Ocean, or Graveyard of the Atlantic exhibit and the Sea Turtle Assistance and Rehabilitation (STAR) Center. Numerous interesting galleries and interactive exhibits. A nice boardwalk out back leads to soundside pier and gazebo overlooking Croatan sound. Read that they rent the gazebo and aquarium for special events like weddings. Buy/reserve your tickets ahead of time for day and time you want, or you risk a chance of not being able to get in. Parking is also a challenge so get there early if you can. Its smaller than expected but the kids enjoyed the visit so the tickets is worth it.

Great experience for kids of all ages! Interactive exhibits were engaging. The touch pool was a big hit where you can get your finger hugged by urchins! Our sons really enjoyed the turtle lab, which was a hands-on simulation of how injured turtles can be rehabilitated. One of my favorite parts is the jellyfish room with its tall tubes of bubbles and light changing displays of floating jellies. The surrounding land outside the aquarium was also great. There was a "fossil" excavation mound, a nature trail, and a pier. I really liked the pier as it was a lovely view, ample seating, and informative panels along the pier walkway. Highly recommended.

We went in the middle of the week. If you go on Monday, Wednesday, Friday before 1 you can watch them feeding the sharks. We timed it just right. They have loads of sea creatures, several healing tanks where you can see them tending to the animals in need. You can touch the stingrays and the staff is knowledgeable about habits and living conditions. You can easily spend over an hour or speed through. Just make sure to see the outside play area. Even without kids it was pretty cool to see.

Thus aquarium was very nice. It was definitely kid friendly for several reasons. It was big enough to keep the children engaged but not too big they lost interest. They allow strollers(there are several in other states that don't). They had a couple of interactive exhibits. A touch one and an educational one about sea turtles. They rehab sea turtles with the expectation that they will be released back to the wild. They also have a trail and a butterfly garden on the premises that is included with your admission. All in all, we took a 2 and 6 year old and both were entertained. I'd say that's a win!
