Great ancient place. Scotland government has done a good job to retain this almost 600 years old house. (Please click Like under my review if it was helpful Or suggest Edit if it needs to be updated) - Thanks.

Houses alongside the Scottish Storytelling Centre is this museum. All about the life and times of John Knox, the Scottish theologian and leader of the Scottish Reformation. To tour the museum, you have to first enter the storytelling centre and pay at the reception there. Then you're given some notes for a self-guided tour. The house is certainly one of the oldest in Edinburgh, dating back to 1470. According to the notes, it's debatable if John Knox actually stayed in the house, so that's a bit of a let-down. The house museum is split over three levels accessible via stone spiral staircase. The first 2 floors cover general history, the history of the house and exhibits about the reformation and the relationship with the bible. While the top floor cover more about John Knox, his role in the reformation and relationships with Mary Queen of Scots. Overall, enjoyable and an interesting visit if not quite as intellectually as I'd thought it would've been given the subject matter. The entrance fee is about right.

Great experience if you want to know a part of the history that made Scotland what it is today. Great content, maybe too much information but I like it !

Surly, unwelcoming, unsmiling young man on the counter. £7 for the self guided tour - you are provided with a laminated guide. I was told there was no guidebook available to buy. Plenty of information on the sheets and more so within the building. It is an attractive building with some saucy wooden ceilings, much faded, but that's to be expected. It is good to get round these old buildings though and see aspects of the city from differing angles.

This was our first Edinburgh experience. We are both knowledgeable about the history of Knox and were glad to see how his history was shown and preserved. The shop organizer was delightful, efficient helpful and welcoming. We especially enjoyed the upper quarters and the recorded sermon was accurate to Knox and was a blessing to listen to. How wonderful to hear the entire gospel of The Lord Jesus Christ, just as Knox would want. Highly recommended and not too busy.

I learned a lot about the Scottish Reformation and two very different people who made a mark on this period.

Highly recommend a stop here on your adventures! It was located around the corner from our hotel. The staff were super friendly. And you can even dress up as John Knox!

It's delightful to see some key texts of the reformation period, like writings by John Hux, the Institutes and the Geneva Bible. I thought the judgements expressed in the signs were a bit anachronistic and one-sided, but that was expected.

I wish I could give a review but as they hadn't updated their seasonal opening hours we went out of our way to park in the area only to find they were closed on the day!! Very disappointing as we were only in the city for the day.

This is the distinctive house that sticks out half way along the Royal Mile, and it is worth a visit to find out more about the beginnings of Protestantism in Scotland, led by John Knox his clashes with the Catholic Mary Queen of Scots. The actual connections of this house with John Knox are somewhat tenuous, and indeed the story is also told about the Mossman family who were goldsmiths to the Scottish nation and lived and worked here.

Excellent museum. Gives an interesting insight into Scottish history 1500 to 1700. Well worth visiting.

Beautiful, right on the Royal Mile. Apart was very unique and very clean. Just wish it would have had a lift. Hard carrying up heavy luggage on spiral stairs. Perfect location and shopping and site seeing all around there. I'd give it a 5 star if it wasn't for not having a lift.

Jeremiah 6.16 - This is what the LORD says: "Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. I did visit John Knox House to know about the paths. "Give me Scotland........." Got a different perspective from what I have read/heard before. Coming back for more visit.

Excellent, highly recommended. Lots of information on John Knox and his views plus extra background on political and religious issues in his time. Also very interesting info on James Mosman the Crown's goldsmith and assayer.

Second time I'd been and a lovely little museum that could be done in less than a hour depending on speed.

Great self guided tour, with information on the previous occupants. Interesting historical connection to Mary Queen of Scotts.

Great place to see copies of key pre-Reformation (Jan Huss) and Reformation era texts on display in the upper floors of the Knox house. Original copies of Knox's Geneva bible, an Erasmus' text, Calvin's Institutes and Knox's "The Reformation in Scotland" on display among others. Frightening to think that children's books intended to sexualize children are available for sale in the Storytelling centre on the bottom floor.

My mom and I stopped in here because of the historical significance. We love House Museums and especially those of such important historical figures. We loved the house and our time spent there. Very interesting.

Located halfway up the Royal Mile, I stopped in mid afternoon and there were many other guests. You pay at the front counter for the tour though I had to ask bec there was no visible sign, nor did the staff ask if I needed any help when i looked at her. You are given a laminated booklet as home guide as you visit different rooms of the house. 30 min was enough for me to go through.

Through history of John Knox reformation, a couple cool Bibles, and amazing wood paneled walls and paintings from the 16th Century. Really awesome to see the rooms that are still period wood panels and paintings on the walls and ceilings. Georgous.
