Six years ago I met Luke and Dave at MOTIVNY to rehab a grade 2 ankle sprain. Between the manual techniques, range of motion exercises, physical therapy homework, and general advice, I finished rehabilitation in a better place than before my injury. Their team is dedicated to each person that walks through their door, and you can tell that they truly care about your recovery and journey as an athlete. I've trusted MOTIV with my prehab & rehab care, I've had two sports related injuries since, and each time MOTIV put back together. This is the team you want to be working with!

Highly recommended! Not only is Motiv a beautiful space, I also found the information and attentiveness from James during my physical therapy session to be higher quality and more up to date than what I've typically seen from such consults throughout my life. If you're looking for providers who care about finding the right programming for you, and not just a set of standard exercises - along with a more modern understanding of movement and how to create positive adaptations that are inline with your capability and goals, this is your place.

Customer service and hospitality are non-existent. I'm not sure if it's the studio's intent but I wish there was a more welcoming vibe from the people who work here. I felt that there was no time welcomed for questions, introductions (as a new member of the class), or even time to explain the moves at the beginning of class. I always felt rushed to get out and not engage in conversation with anyone around me. The atmosphere was cold to say the least. I can get the same from following kinstretch from YouTube videos and would expect more from attending a class in-person. I had used a credit for a class I later had to cancel (before the cancellation fee window), so I emailed them asking for the unused credit back to my account. They emailed back saying they'd help me with it (they did), but never followed up via email to tell me that it was done. For a class membership, they will not remind you of any remaining classes you have and won't remind you if they're expiring soon. Classes expire but it's written in the fine print and the studio is absolutely unforgiving.

James Chung is the best PT in New York City. After going to several PTs for a nagging herniated disk in my back and not seeing any progress, I was discouraged. But, I was recommended MOTIVNY by a friend, and my first session with James was worth more than all the PT I'd done so far combined. In our sessions over the last few months I went from not being able to run or lift without severe back pain, to getting back to lifting pain-free and ultimately running in the NYC marathon. It would not have been possible without James. Unlike other PTs, James took time to understand. He worked with me to test my specific symptoms, listen to my goals, and work with me to create a plan that helped me achieve them. If you want to not just recover, but come back strong and better than you were before go to James.

Kinstretch has been invaluable to my injury recovery. James is an excellent teacher who knows when to push and when to let up.

If you are serious about taking care of your body and are willing to put in the work that comes with it, come to MotivNY. The team here (Luke G in particular) has always had my back literally and physically, challenging me through training and supporting me through PT. The abundance of knowledge and individualized sessions have consistently led to results over the last 8yrs. I’m beyond grateful to have a trustworthy support team.

I love Motiv! I go here for both personal training (Lexa) and physical therapy (James). James and Lexa work together to create a program that addresses some of the physical ailments I'm dealing with AND work on overall strength and mobility. I hop into their group classes every once in a while too and they are always challenging and fun. Cannot recommend them enough.

As a runner, MOTIVNY offers everything I need to get my body ready for high mileage, notably strength training *specifically* for runners. I have only taken classes with Dave and Jess, but the class offerings by other instructors cater to diverse needs. I have also seen Dave for physical therapy for running-related injuries. He's taken the time to listen, asked questions, and ensured the treatment made sense given my specific history and running goals. After every treatment, I felt empowered to take ownership of my healing process thanks to his advice and his willingness to explain and instruct. The studio itself, thoughtfully arranged and cared for, makes for a welcoming and cozy nook in the city.

I’ve been a high impact athlete for years and am always in need of some sort of PT, mobility work, therapy or coaching. I found Motiv when I first moved to New York 7 years ago and have not got anywhere else. The whole teams credentials and level of knowledge of the human body is best in the industry. They understand the needs of the modern city athlete and how to get you back to where you need to be to perform through therapy and coaching. Thanks to David and the team there I have not only made great recoveries but have come back stronger than before. What sets them apart the most is the true sense of community with the team, clients and the neighborhood. I always feel like I am a part of something bigger when I work with them. So much respect and appreciation not only for what they’ve build but where they are going.

After discovering Motiv New York, my running experience has been brought to another level. As an avid runner, finding a place that truly understands my needs and can offer the right training and mental support was a game-changer. The trainers at Motiv are not only knowledgeable but genuinely passionate about running, which makes all the difference. They provided personalized recommendations that have greatly improved my comfort and performance, whether I’m hitting the pavement for a marathon training session or just a casual jog through the city. But what truly sets Motiv New York apart is the sense of community they’ve built. Their enthusiasm for running is infectious, and I’ve found myself participating in group runs and events I wouldn’t have considered before. it’s a hub for runners of all levels to connect, learn, and grow.

As a runner, who relies on running for my overall mental and physical health, I was ignoring my hip and low back pain for quite some time. Booking a PT session with Jessica Chang was the best decision I could've made. I learned a lot about my body and what I need to improve during my initial visit. Thanks to the tips and exercises I received at MotivNY, I am already in a lot less pain just one month post-initial visit. I signed up for the Outdoors membership and am looking forward to getting back to my regularly scheduled running soon.

I have been a physical therapy client at Motiv for 3 months and have been working with James. James has completely changed the way I think of strength and mobility and how they should be incorporated to achieve my distance running goals to work with my body. I went from being told I need a major hip surgery, taking an 8 month running hiatus (which for us runners is an eternity) to working with James and running several times per week including long runs. I'm so grateful I started working with him and didn't go through with the surgery. It's also worth mentioning that I saw Greg for a gait analysis and he's coaching me in my comeback. It has been such a positive experience. He's so responsive and smart, and I feel strong, challenged and very excited for the next few months. If you're a runner looking to get back or improve in any way I highly recommend Motiv!

MOTIVNY is a unique space with tons of offerings for athletes of all kinds. Dave, Luke, and the team at MOTIVNY are all attentive and provide incredible services through classes, PT, coaching and more. My PT James, is extremely knowledgeable, detail oriented, patient and does whatever possible to help his patients work through injury while achieving goals. James created an evolving plan for me to work through my injury. He communicated with me regularly and made suggestions through my marathon training to prevent my injury from increasing in pain, all while my running improved. I was able to complete my marathon pain free and even set a new PR for myself. I’ll always be a part of the MOTIVNY community and I will always recommend athletes to lean on the team here.

I love coming to Motiv. The strength and mobility classes are fantastic, and the therapists are knowledgeable and supportive. I see James Chung, who has been instrumental in helping me resolve achilles issues that were hindering my marathon training.

I did not believe in strength training/PT until I joined MOTIVNY. They’re the best of the best! The staff here is attentive, caring, and downright awesome. Truly, you won’t receive better care in NYC. I came here originally for knee and hip flexor pain after my fall marathon, and the care I received in their facility and the take home exercises were unmatched. Look no further, NYC. If you’re looking to recover, enhance your running, or build strength, this place has got you covered.

Highly recommend Jess for PT. She was able to pinpoint the imbalance that was causing hip pain and get me back to running very quickly. The app makes it super easy to keep up with my mobility routine. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. Very community focused in a great space.

I love the mobility Kinstretch classes. I workout rigorously and regularly but don’t stretch enough and as a result have tightness in many parts of my body. The kinstretch classes have helped me immensely - it’s been 2 months since I started and I feel the difference with better movements and less pain overall in my body. Both James and Mike are fantastic instructors - highly recommend these classes

Love MotivNY - I have been working with Greg on my custom run coaching and have seen a huge difference. I'm a first timer with the NYC Marathon and didn't know what to expect. Greg is awesome, he cares about you and knows exactly when to push and when to pull you back. I'm also quite surprised how well his plan has worked so far and he's somehow managed to do it while keeping my monthly mileage low - which i thought wasn't going to be possible. I look forward to working with them on other services they offer.

Oh gosh - where do I start with this review? I am a frequently injured runner due to my spinal condition. I was previously a patient at a different PT place here in NYC but decided to try a new place because I was getting bored of my old PT. I wanted to come to a PT that is welcoming and non-judgmental of my activity choices - one that wants to enable me to do the activities I want to do. Two of my friends suggested that I look into MotivNY. I decided to make the change b/c I like the holistic and enabling approach MotivNY takes towards each of its patients. I currently work with Jess - she is absolutely phenomenal. She looked into the root cause of my left foot injury and was not judgmental about not going to PT for two months, etc. Her exercises have helped me get back to my original shape in no time! Just FYI for y'all - The other PTs, Coaches and instructors are super phenomenal - Luke, David, James, Greg, JP and Lexa. I've worked with Greg before and his manual manipulation will flush out your legs in no time lol. If you're a runner in NYC, definitely look into MotivNY for your strength training and PT classes. You will not regret it. If you do end up going - tell them the Fruit Guy (i.e., me), referred you ;)

I’ve had several sessions with Jess at MOTIVNY to help a stubborn knee return to form following meniscus surgery. She’s helped me regain an enormous amount of my motion range. In my experiences (and unfortunately there have been many) physical therapy is about patience and diligence, and Jess listens to my progress reports and constantly finds interesting and challenging ways to keep my recovery moving forward. She knows her stuff. She is the best.

Have attended Kinstretch classes twice, the only reason I don't go more often is the times. Intentional, focused movement that releases and challenges specific areas and always make me feel better after walking out of class. Highly recommend attending one if you are thinking about it.

I’ve been going to MOTIVNY for a few years already. They have the most amazing team - very professional and compassionate team ever. David & Luke are always going an extra mile - they are both athletes, so they just get it! To add, the space is very neat, clean & minimalistic. I looove this place!

James Chung is a cut above even good trainers. His physiotherapy background enables him to use small details as clues to what exercises will improve strength, and balance as well as longer term health and mobility. I have made great progress after several joint replacements confident that I can push myself without damage to my body under James’ guidance.

MotivNY is an excellent group of physical therapists who work with you to help you reach your goals, whether it is strengthening or healing. If your a serious athlete and recovering from an injury, there is no better group.

I trust my PT at Motiv to keep me healthy so I can keep doing what I love-- Running ULTRA marathons. I've been going to Motiv NY for over 4 years now. The best!

I’ve had a great experience with David Jou. He has helped me rehab through two bouts of IT band syndrome to my first marathon.

  • 5/5 hallie c. 1 year ago on Google
I started getting IT band issues in the middle of my marathon training cycle this summer. I first went to Jess about 3-4 weeks prior to race day and continued going twice a week. I thought I was getting into PT too late to have the IT issue resolved in time for my races. But Jess worked her magic - not only did I not feel any knee pain during the first marathon I ran, but was also pain-free during the second marathon I ran two weeks later. I’m very grateful for Jess’s help! (Also key takeaway, don’t wait to see a PT if something feels off...)

Best in NYC! They’ve been immersed in the running community long enough to have a great understanding of what’s needed from all of the runners within it. From physical therapy, strength-training, injury prevention & rehabilitation — they take incredible care with our precious muscles and give incredible care to our momentous bodies. Plus, their studio is immaculate and around the corner from Upside Pizza. You simply cannot beat some strength followed by some slices 🍕

I had the pleasure of working with David from 2018-2020 while living in NYC. Not only is he a healer (1:1 sessions had me feeling new every time) he’s created a very welcoming business with a fantastic product. Could not recommend this place more to anyone: fitness enthusiasts & professionals.
