I would like to say a special thanks to Leo's house staff. I am a solo traveler and they were super nice and helpful with all of my questions. My stay there was perfect. The room was basic but clean, I booked one with private bathroom. The bed was comfy and the room very quiet. I had the honour to stay in the same room as mother Theresa! Breakfast was delicious and varied. Please keep in mind it is not served on Saturday and Sunday though. The location is perfect in the beautiful neighborhood of Chelsea. Public transports 2 minutes away. There is also a laundry on the basement which came very useful as the weather was very warm last week and clothes were needing a cleaning. Special mention for Karine, the guy working with her on Sunday (sorry forgot the name) and Mike (or Michael) at the reception. They were super nice and friendly. I was a bit scared because of bad reviews here but for me everything went fine, they are extremely professional. Also the man serving the breakfast was really nice (I don't know his name but he speaks French). Thank you all, certainly I'll be back at the Leo's house when back to NY.

The paint was peeling off my walls. The rooms don't have a shower, you have to use communal showers on the hallway. The sink is in the closet and the toilet in a seperate room in the bedroom which was a very odd set up. There was no air conditioning either. A very religious devout catholic place. Very clean. Day staff was nice but night staff gave me a hard time about bringing my friend to my room. Pricey for no shower. I wont be returning.

We spent a week at Leo House in July (with own bathroom). It is in an excellent location, and the staff is very friendly and helpful. The morning breakfast is filling and a great way to start the day. The rooms are small and the bathrooms could use some TLC. But given the age of the building and costs to maintain it, and the low room rate (by Manhattan standards) -- that must be very challenging for it as a business. It is affordable, tidy, clean, friendly, outstanding location -- and the rooms are a bit spartan and very much showing their age... but so what?! they are clean. The staff is super helpful and good people. I'd easily recommend it for anyone looking for a spartan (not spa) basic & clean room to stay in Chelsea, Manhattan. (Another review mentioned the showers. If you never used an old time separate hot-tap plus cold-tap without a mixer valve before: 1) run the taps first 2) run the hot-tap until it is a small steady stream, 3) run the cold water at a much larger volume than hot, 4) test w your toe if temp is ok, wait a bit, retest, 5) pull the lever for the shower. About 2 to 3 times cold to hot water should be warm but not too hot. Mix it to your liking. Yes, it is very 1910 -- so what, think of it as a time machine 😀!)

Don't stay at the Leo's House Hotel. Worst experience! My room was same temperature as outside!!! The staff looked at the heater and told me it was fine. Next day, when I told them it was not fine, they did not care. No apologies. No offers of refund for a night in a freezing room. No offer to move me to another room No refund when I was forced to leave their hotel 2 nights early. This place should be shut down for by the board of health!

Didn't allow me to change my booking dates the minute i booked it due to a technical error on the website. I booked all my travels on a specific date and screenshoted it as evidence that i was traveling on these dates. Even after explaining my situation a minute after the technical error they did not allow me to change my booking date and forced me to cancel the room, resulting in me paying a deposit of $300 (the room cost) and having to rebook and pay another $300. All you had to do was let me change the date to the correct one, I'm out $300 but at least i know where I should never stay at.

Although it is an old building and still a Catholic guest house, everything has been fine so far. We slept there for a week. It's not for light sleepers as you can hear the street, but there are earplugs. There is a toilet and a washbasin with a mirror in the room. For showering you have to share a bathroom with other guests, but it can be locked. The breakfast is good for the price. The coffee tastes good, there are freshly scrambled eggs and as much juice as you want. The best part was that we could do our laundry in the basement so we didn't have to drive to a laundry center on the next block. The staff is manned by friendly, hard-working black employees at the front desk. An elderly black lady said to my friend that he ate the whole breakfast and that's why his belly is so fat, we took it with humor but were still shocked. The hotel clearly lives from its location, there is also a subway station just around the corner.

Leo House is a lovely guest house walking distance from Grand Central Station. My en-suite room was cozy, comfortable, and clean. I didn’t have any problem with noise during the night, even though the location was so central. The staff were professional and friendly. Additionally, a continental breakfast was included. Great value for money! I will return soon.

There were mice in the room, the staff knows it and doesn't even try to pretend it's a coincidence and they're sorry or that it will be safe on another floor. So be sure - rodants are there! After check-out, there is a problem with the refund for all upcoming nights. I agreed to check out after providing a refund for all the upcoming nights, but despite this unequivocal assurance, the refund turned out to be much lower than it should have been. The contact was moderately pleasant. I do not recommend!

Although some of the rooms are a little outdated, this is more than made up for by other characteristics of this guest house. The location is amazing, literally a few minutes from a metro station & well within walking distance of attractions like the High Line & Times Square. There is a courtyard garden, computer room, laundry & the complimentary breakfast is great. The rooms are a decent size & very clean & the staff friendly & helpful. A great place to stay on a visit to New York

Booked a room back in September there. Very unfriendly staff. Three running rats in my room woke me up at 6am. Out of surprise I yelled and staff just asked me to "calm down and stop shouting" as if it was normal to have rats and my reaction was unreasonnable. Once I explained them the issue at the reception desk, they offered directly a refund for the remaining nights. They were clearly aware of the pest infestation. My advice is avoid that place: It is infested with rats other guests giving them a 5 star are just lucky they didnt see them.

I had a single room with ensuite. Excellent location. The entire place is in need of a good repair as it looks dated. But don't put it off by appearance. Rooms are clean, comfortable. It has a lounge, library with computers, laundry and restaurants for breakfast during weekdays.

While yes, one could say the rooms are a bit outdated, it can also be interpret as classic Catholic. Stayed on the eighth floor, didn’t see/hear any mice or rats contrary to what some reviews have mentioned. The breakfast was good for being a 2-star hotel. Overall great stay. Would stay again. Staff was friendly and very helpful. PS: to those complaining about breakfast, don’t forget it’s a 2-star hotel! You get your moneys worth.

Check in was very nice and easy. Very friendly people. Great breakfast too. My issue was at check out. I was rudely talked to by an elderly woman in glasses warning me if there's any issues with the room I would be charged and a bunch of other stuff. I shut her off once she became rude because I did not deserve that kind of talk. I want to say the cleaning people were extremely nice and helpful. Just one bad apple...and she was bad.

I paid $130 per night in mid-December for a room on the top floor with an ensuite bathroom. It was large enough, clean, and had amazing wi-fi speeds as the router (for the whole floor?) was in the room. By NYC standards, excellent value.

Leo of House and its Board and Chairperson are no more than abusive thieves. They stole thousands of dollars from innocent traveler's from overseas during the period from the 23 March 2020 to 1 June 2020 when their establishment was in lockdown. Nobody could stay, their doors were closed. They did not refund this money when they didn't even provide a service. But they stole this money from people like me a pensioner who had planned a trip of a lifetime. Not to have 10 days of accommodation returned to me, when they didn't provide the service, is a crime NOT A SIGN OF COMPASSION. This is totally disgusting behavior which is becoming so familiar from yet another Catholic practice. PLEASE DON'T SUPPORT an organization like this. There are plenty of other places in NY that would have a conscious and provide you with service.

Friendly and helpful staff. Spent a week here, end if November, was beautiful, getting ready for Christmas. Laundry available. Only annoying thing, was there 4 days before the room was cleaned. And no clean towels on arrival. However would return

Excellent place to stay if you’re on a budget. En-suite toilets but you’ve to share the bathroom. Buffet breakfast and super friendly staff. That said, the place is dated and needs an upgrade. Run by a religious organization so that may explain. But on balance, a great place in the heart of Chelsea.

I enjoyed my stay at Leo House! Michael was very welcoming and informative at check in. He secured my luggage, which allowed me to spend time in the chapel. My room was PERFECT! Great location, close to buses, train, and Times Square. There’s morning mass and continental breakfast served by gracious staff members. Thanks Leo House!

The Leo House is not a regular hotel. Expedia and other travel sites should be more clear. It is a Catholic guest house (sort of like a rooming house). It is in an old building with original fixtures (some of which are crumbling from the 1940s). The rooms are clean and the desk staff is friendly and helpful, and they have a free breakfast during the week. However, if you are looking for a romantic getaway you may want to reconsider unless you like twin beds, crucifixes on the walls, and pictures of the pope. Some of the rooms have a shower shared with others. If you are not catholic (as I am not) this all might be a little unnerving when you show up to celebrate your anniversary. If you are looking for affordable lodging and don’t care about regular hotel amenities then this could be the perfect place for you. We had a fine stay, but I wish we’d realized what we were booking before we had already booked a non refundable room. I also wish they provided hair dryers and irons.

This is the only hotel I will stay at when I come to visit NYC once a year. There prices do not change regardless of the events going on in the city, and they are extremely reasonable. I have been coming here for 4 nights a year for the past 4 years and I love it every time. Free breakfast too!

Decent rooms located in the Chelsea District of New York city. Nice, midtown accommodations had a good price. The continental breakfast is second to none and worth the price of the room alone!

What a treasure in Manhattan! Modest price with a boarding house vibe, using a shared shower on each floor, very homey couches, sitting areas, garden, and impressive hot breakfast Monday-Friday. The best part was when my outfit was ruined/stained, and I came in the lobby kind of upset about it. They fixed me up with extra towels, a plastic bag for my clothes and directed me to the cleaners just a quick walk down the street. Although my outfit mishap couldn't be fixed, the staff kept being so nice when I was coming and going, saying they were sorry that happened. Very kind people on staff creates a great travel environment for people like me who were just looking for a place to sleep near the subway and all of the sites Manhattan has to offer (like the Little Island a quick walk away). Thank you for making my trip so wonderful, safe and friendly!

The employees were very rude the whole time. We didn't get everything we paid for and the way the manager handled the situation was ridiculous. She played it off as a training issue even though the one employee we had talked to about our room had worked there for over 20 years. Even if it's a training issue that's not the customer's problem. They were combative when we wanted to talk about it and did the absolute minimum to try and resolve the situation. I would not recommend staying here.

The TV and internet were out in the room. Each room has a separate router. They were in the midst of setting up the new router. A Verizon representative came the day after we checked in. They were still fixing it when we returned so they moved us to a different room. The TV controls didn't work either. The heater valve was loose. The shower on the other floor had no head.

The Leo House is a great cozy hotel! The location is certainly what convinced me to stay here, you are steps away from de C-E metro line. Chelsea is a beautiful neighborhood with great restaurants, shops, and amenities. The hotel is clean and rooms are spacious (for NY standards) and very well furnished, beds are comfy, the bathroom is clean and the showers, although shared, are also perfect. The staff is very nice and helpful and breakfast is simple but good and tasty. Overall a great experience! With definitely go back on my next trip.

I booked the room through their web page. I paid the initial amount for the room and I read it was non-refundable. But by a personal situation I had to cancel the stay. I sent a email to notify. Two days later I noticed that the rest of the days of my reservation was charged to my bank account. I called them to ask why they charged me the difference of the rate and the personal was rude and didn’t help me. I felt scammed and this situation is not common in a hotel reservation in big hotel chains. I lost my money and didn’t have a good reason for that. So be careful when you make a reservation.

Overall, it’s an OK place considering the location. However, the room was really small and the bathroom can only fit in one person and you can hardly move in the bathroom 🤦‍♂️anyway I love the breakfast there so

A perfect stay in the heart of NYC. Yes it’s nothing fancy but overall the service and facilities were great. Staff were very friendly. You can’t fault the location at all ! It’s only 2 mins walk from a subway. Rooms were extremely comfy (although a bit dusty). I got also the shared bathroom package where you get your own sink and toilet and shower is just outside your room and was never an issue (never had to wait to use the shower at any point). Overall really enjoyed my stay and would recommend it to anyone especially for the value for $$ !

Giving a neutral rating because we only popped in to access the Little Free Library to exchange a book. I wanted to leave a review to inform possible visitors of the existence of the Little Free Library inside -- the folks at the desk were so gracious and kind and pointed us right to it. The library is much larger than what a single box on a pole (how Little Free Libraries usually are) can hold and sports a section in languages other than English. Our experience using the Little Free Library was such that we are sure to return as guests to the hotel.

Will definitely come back. Very convenient location. Service was great. Having a common bathtub was not too much of a problem. Beds can be better but I had a single twin. Maybe different for a full bed. But for the price and parking nearby can be free for the weekend. The breakfast was above my expectations.

This was by far the cheapest option I could find that was a private room with a bathroom, and I felt the value was very good for the price. My room was clean and had what I needed. Would definitely recommend to those looking to stay in the area on a budget.

It was our first stay at the Leo House and will definitely come back! 1) Location is perfect, in Manhattan (Chelsea), the high line is up the street 5 mn walk, and Penn Station is 15 mn walk. You can reach Time Square by foot along the High Line in 30 mn 2) it's clean, quiet, beds are comfy staff is super nice and friendly. And it's safe. 3) Breakfast included M to Sat - I stayed with my mom, we had a room with 2 single beds and our own 'half bathroom' (a sink and toilet). The bathtub was just a door down. Water pressure and was quite warm if needed. A+ option - highly recommend! And the price is good for a Manhattan option. Merci to the staff!!! They also keep your luggage, should you arrive early, or leave NYC later in the day. It's in a locked room and free.

Very good place. Nice rooms, great location, best crew. The only issue is not having a shower or bath inside the room. Each room has a restroom, but you take a shower in a floor shared room.

What a lovely little gem right in the heart of NYC! This is my third stay at The Leo House and I plan on returning during my next trip to the states. Coming from the land down under is a very LONG and tiring journey so it helps to be greeted by smiling faces. Tommy, Amber, Natalia, and Joseph were all wonderful and made my trip with their excellent service and friendliness. It's a shame to see that Stephany no longer works here, she was great! (Rare to see an American show so much love to Australia, thanks!!!) Kudos to housekeeping for keeping the rooms spotless and to the kitchen for providing a spectacular breakfast! Hope to see this place again soon.

Friendly staff, great price for the location. It's less than a block to the C/E train. I had originally booked with my girlfriend and had to switch to a platonic buddy at the last minute. This wasn't the ideal spot for that with a small room and single bed, but we made it work (double beds would have been better for that kind of setup). The single room would be well suited for a couple or solo traveler. The shared showers are individual separate rooms, not like a stall, so you still get privacy. You leave them your room key when you leave and they buzz you in when you get back. Aside from that and that the Catholic theme, those were the only real quirks.

  • 4/5 Annelisa 5 months ago on Google
The stay was above our expectations! The room was clean, breakfast was good and the location was amazing. The only problem was the check-in. All staff were friendly, except the older women with grey hair. She spoke to us as if we would break down the place, made fun of our language used, and kept us repeating everything she said as if we were stupid. We didn’t feel welcome at all. Please don’t put this lady at the front desk. It’s bad for the guesthouse.

Customer service is rude and gets frustrated easily when asking for clarification. I simply asked what the reasoning behind why there is no refund when booking with discount pricing. I do understand that I won’t be getting the refund I just wanted to know why it is that way (because Lowkey makes no sense). I haven’t even stayed at the hotel or used their services and just because it’s discounted they have the right to take my money?? I don’t get it and I simply and kindly asked why that is and she got short and frustrated with me and cut me off and yelled at me. Phone staff need training on answering phones because you signed up for this job and if this place doesn’t hold their staff to a standard then how can you provide a good experience. Do not book unless you absolutely have no options. You would think a catholic run “hotel” (more like hostel), would have kind and understanding staff but this wasn’t the case. DONT BOOK

For the price in NYC it was perfect only 97 for the night and we were only there to sleep because we were waking up early to see the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. There was one older woman working the desk and she was pretty rude, one thing I thought was odd was when checking in the reservation was under my name I expected they would need my id, but my boyfriend who is also 18 only had his college id which normally works as an id for him at places, (he has not been able to get his license or a state id because of covid). So we had to contact his dad to email the hotel a picture of his passport, but if we did not get that we were not going to be let into our room which I thought it is strange they needed a government id for everyone staying there. I felt really safe in the Leo House, it was in a nice area and a convenient subway ride to where we were watching the parade in Central Park. One reason why we picked the Leo House is because we are 18 and not many hotels in NYC let 18-20 year olds check in. Our room was nice it was weird though our bed was two twin beds pushed together and there were some patched up holes in the wall but the room was very clean. We did not need to shower when we were there because it was just for a place to sleep, but take not most rooms do not come with a shower and you need to take a shower in the communal shower in the hall, but all rooms have a toilet and sink. We couldn't stay for breakfast but I heard it was good. Overall I would come back to the Leo House.

The Leo house was the perfect place for our trip to NYC. We stayed for three nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The staff is very accommodating and friendly and the front lobby is so cozy and warm, especially since it’s decorated for the holiday. Our room was perfect for our needs. We were on the 7th floor and actually had a charming little view. There were two twin beds that were pushed together and they were very comfortable and clean. We were able to open our window because it had a screen in it and that was an easy way to control the room temperature. It was a little warm for December when we were there so the radiator in the room was a bit too warm. In our room we had a half bath that was clean and cute. The baths at the hotel are shared but they were clean and conveniently located and were never crowded while we were there. We only had the free breakfast one morning but it was very good for a hotel breakfast. The location was convenient as well. We always felt safe and there was a convenient store on the same block as well as lots of other dining nearby. Also just a block away from the subway station. Highly recommend the Leo house if you are traveling on a budget and like the cozy feel of older hotels that have charm and character.

5 star rating was given due to location, security, staff. Accommodations met all of my needs even with a shared shower/bath. You can’t pay enough for peace - the Catholic Christian atmosphere was the most important aspect of my decision to stay here. Perfect if you are looking for peace.

Whenever you showered the water would just randomly get piping hot and you would have to literally jump out of the shower to save your life. On my first night I accidentally touched the heater with my butt (it was on max heat and there was no cover) and I still have three huge scars even tough this was three months ago. Staff at times was a little rough and sometimes questioned stuff that wasn’t really any of their business. Other than this I really enjoyed my stay. The room was quiet even tough it was right next to a busy street. The area is great and breakfast was simple but everything you needed. You really get your moneys worth and I would definitely stay here again!

The location of the Leo House is superb and the personell is friendly. The breakfast is nice too but the interior is pretty rustic and the walls/doors a bit thin. If you travel on a budget this might be the best option in all of New York City.

This place is simple and old-fashioned but a superb value and a haven of peace in NYC. Most rooms have a private bath; beds and linens clean and comfortable; maybe the best free hotel breakfast in the city. Decent people. Excellent area for touring, transit, restaurants, including an excellent Greek diner at the end of the street. Highly recommended after several stays.

We booked through expedia and explicitly booked a double room without a shared bathroom. What we got was a room with a bed the size of 120cm and with a half bathroom, meaning only toilet and sink available. This room was on the third floor of the hotel which had water damage a few weeks prior, which was still visible in the hallways. The showers on the floor were also out of order because of this and the only option on the floor was a shared tub. After talking with the staff about this, they told us they didn't knew about this issue and had us double check this with the maintenance guy, who was also surprised, that there was no shower on the floor. The staff told us to just go a floor above to use the shower, and that we couldn't get another room, since everything was booked. We should come back the next day to ask for another room, since the receptionist didn't seem to know when people are checking out of their rooms. At least we got a discount for the inconvenience of not having a functioning shower on the floor. The room itself was mostly clean, some leftover hairs could be found around the toilet but overall not too bad. The receptionist the following day, as well as the breakfast staff have been very friendly, but since we didn't want to stay in this situation we booked another hotel around the block. The receptionists at the new hotel already heard of the issues with the Leo House and she was happy to give us a room for our stay. If you get a room with private bathroom in this board house, it might be worth a try, but I would recommend paying more to not have to deal with any of those issues.
