The
Chrysler
Building
is
an
Art
Deco
skyscraper
built
in
1930
to
house
the
offices
of
the
Chrysler
automobile
company
and
located
at
the
intersection
of
42nd
Street
and
Lexington
Avenue
on
the
East
Side
of
Manhattan.
For
a
short
time,
just
11
months,
the
building
was
the
tallest
building
in
the
world,
but
then
the
title
was
taken
by
the
Empire
State
Building.
Its
decoration
was
based
on
elements
of
Chrysler
cars.
It
is
decorated
on
the
outside
with
chrome
sculptures.
The
Chrysler
is
an
important
example
of
Art
Deco
and
is
considered
by
major
architects
as
the
nicest
building
in
the
city.
Its
construction
began
in
1928
and
was
completed
in
1930.
Today
the
building
is
the
fourth
tallest
in
New
York
(it
stands
at
1,046
feet
or
318.82
meters)
after
the
Empire
State
Building
at
1,250
feet
or
381
meters,
the
Bank
of
America
Tower
with
a
height
of
1,200
feet
or
365.76
meters
and
One
World
Trade
Center.
Access
to
the
skyscraper
can
be
done
via
the
subway
from
the
Grand
Central
-
42
St
stop
(lines
7
and
4,5,6)
as
well
as
from
the
huge
central
train
station
Grand
Central
Terminal
(Danbury
lines
,
Harlem,
Hudson,
New
Canaan,
New
Haven).
