The New York Public Library is an absolute treasure for book lovers and history enthusiasts alike. As a visitor, I was in awe of the library's majestic architecture, with its iconic lion statues guarding the entrance. Inside, the grandeur continued, with vast reading rooms, historic manuscripts, and an incredible collection of books from every genre imaginable. Beyond its literary treasures, the library also serves as a haven for those seeking a quiet and contemplative space in the midst of bustling Manhattan. Whether you're doing research, reading, or simply exploring the grand halls, the New York Public Library offers a sense of serenity in the heart of the city. What struck me most during my visit was the palpable sense of history that permeates the library's halls. It's not just a repository of books; it's a repository of knowledge, culture, and the collective memory of a city and a nation. It's a place where the past and present coexist harmoniously. I highly recommend a visit to the New York Public Library, not only for its literary treasures but also for the profound sense of history and culture it imparts to all who enter its doors. It's a true gem in the cultural tapestry of New York City.

A very impressive building building from outside and even more impressive inside. There is free access, you have to show the contents of your bag when you get in. There is a very interesting exhibition about the library’s treasures where you can see amazing pieces such as Charles Dickens’s own writing desk or the original teddy bear that inspired Winnie the Pooh. And the exhibition is also free, you have to download an admission ticket and you have the option of getting a free ticket or make a donation. The study rooms are absolutely beautiful, remember that it’s a working library and you must be very quiet. The picture exhibition host a large amount of photographies, you can spend hours admiring them. The whole interior is an amazing work of architecture full of interesting corners. Don’t forget to visit the shop for the most lovely reading souvenirs.

A true library for any library to aspire too. I spent an hour here but wish I could have spent more time. It's an large and full of charm. I'm sure someone better would be able to explain the history but it's so neat to walk around. You do need a library card to get into some rooms but a lot of the space you can explore yourself. Also they have a little museum of special historical artifacts that's really special to see. You have to reserve time to see it but it doesn't take long. I recommend seeing this at least once if you're traveling to NY! Also the park outside is so beautiful and wonderful.

Such an amazing Library in the middle of Manhattan, also one of the largest around. They have an amazing collection of books too, however hard to get in line in such vast book list. Aesthetic piece of a library makes it harder only to focus on books only. Specially the arts on the ceiling and walls are magnificent and worth to look at. Lots of people sit outside whole day and in inside its always remains crowded being one of the most popular destination. Should be in the top list while visiting New York city.

I’ve been living in NY for over the last 3 decades, worked around the corner for over 20 years, and this is the first time I visited New York Public Library. When you are too busy with everyday life, you don’t find beauty until your perspective changes. Architecture of the building from the outside is stunning, but when you go inside you can really appreciate its beauty in every parts of the library. It felt more like a museum. They do many exhibits there. Most of them are free of charge, and line was not long to get in, even for the weekend (maybe the weather was too cold?) Charles Dickens’s mahogany desk and cane chair were displayed. You can learn so much history and architecture. Perfect place to take your kids or just as a casual date spot. Whether you are a New Yorker or a tourist, I highly recommend this place to visit while in midtown.

Superb architecture.. love passing by this amazing place and a MUST see in NewYork . Have been in once or twice … good collections . Lots of traffic and no parking around . Even if u find it’s insanely expensive .. easy to use public transport and / or walking to this place . Pretty close to Bryant park .. like this place overall..

The iconic big building of the New York public library where only 2 areas are actually open to the public. Didn't even see many books like a library is supposed to have. At least it was free for all that is worth. The room where they had displays of art, famous people stuff, and other interesting items was worth looking at. They make sure you "exit through the gift shop." One reading room on an upper floor was open to the public with art on the walls, which was nice. Overall, it was disappointing since the best parts are closed off to the actual public. If you have all the time in the world, I guess you can make appointments and book tours there, but I certainly did not have that time.

An amazing library in the middle of Manhattan that has beautiful architecture. If you are desiring to actually get books out you will need to cross the street. If you are looking for a walk through history stay put and enjoy the beauty. They have a treasures tour you can enjoy and can explore the library on your own but there are certain sections that are restricted.

Beautiful library by Bryant park. It closed for a long time during pandemic, finally reopened. If you want to sit down and just read book they have a large selection of books for study and research. If you are visiting or just want to admire the architecture of this amazing building. You can walk around freely in most of the parts or simply sign up for the walking tour, the free walking tour is an hour long and the entry opens at noon on Sundays for the coming week. The spots are gone in minutes so make sure to set an alarm to get your tickets: there are two spots daily at 11am and 2pm.

The New York Public Library is fantastic to visit from beginning to end. The architecture alone is amazing, inside and out. The majestic steps leading to the pillars at the entrance are beautiful. There is always a free exhibit open to the public with rotating items and features. There is also a gift shop and library cafe. There are also quiet rooms to study or work. As a tourist, I’d plan at least an hour at this library. They do a bag check upon entry and exit, no food or drinks allowed.

The New York Public Library is a true gem in the bustling heart of the city. I recently visited and was thoroughly impressed with the wealth of resources and the serene atmosphere it offers. The library's architecture is a sight to behold, blending historic charm with modern functionality seamlessly. The reading rooms are spacious and well-lit, providing a perfect environment for focused study or leisurely reading. What sets this library apart is its commitment to fostering a sense of community. The various events and programs offered cater to diverse interests, bringing people together in celebration of knowledge and culture. The exhibitions are thoughtfully curated, offering a fascinating glimpse into the city's history and cultural heritage. I highly recommend a visit to anyone looking for a peaceful retreat in the midst of the city's hustle and bustle.

What an incredible library! The outside is simply amazing and it only gets better when you make your way on in. The amount of marble used to construct this masterpiece is astounding. The library has 4 levels, ground and 3 levels. Expect to have your bag inspected if bring a backpack in. Staff are friendly. Respect the building. It's free and beautiful. Definitely a must visit. 5/5.

Fantastic visitor experience. I came as a tourist so my review focuses only on this perspective. I specifically wanted to see the Polonsky exhibition (basically the library's "best of" and displaying the broad range of holdings). Very high quality exhibit, as you would expect. Exceedingly rare documents and books, but also things you might not expect (sculpture, costume, posters, toys). It is "only" one (large) room, but I easily spent 2 hours. I listened to about half the audio tour. It covers about 30 items in the exhibit. Nicely done, not too short but not too long. Shout out to staff at the exhibition: extremely nice and helpful.

It has a peaceful environment, the employees are very helpful. The building smells of history, the huge walls and the artwork on the walls are a visual feast. I was very happy to be there. Your bag is searched at the door, food and drink are not accepted. There are suitable places in the library for you to work in conjunction with the intensity. They require reservations for some halls. Must visit!

This is by far the best place to see in New York. The building alone is enough, but it also has a surprising amount of other things. On the first floor there is a gallery, a cafe, and a bookstore where you can buy books and souvenirs. You will be fascinated by the paintings on the ceiling and the walls, and if you make a reservation, you can hear explanations from a guide and even see some of the closed interior. If you buy a book at a bookstore, you can get a special stamp on the cover. You can also see Virginia Woolf's handwriting and Charles Dickens' desk in the gallery. Elevators and restrooms are open.

Guess what offers (1) FREE admission; (2) Knowledgeable tour guides (also free); (3) stunning architecture & art work; (4) a tranquil place for research & study; and (5) historical one-of-a-kind maps, periodicals & books (including some of Shakespeare's First Folios & the 1st printing of the King James Bible, 1611)? That's right, the New York Public Library and its flagship Schwarzman Building. So glad I added this stop to my brief New York City visit. // BONUS: Right behind the library is Bryant Park, a large green space to relax, grab a bite, or to socialize.

Absolutely stunning building from the outside and on the inside. The architecture was phenomenal. It’s free! The exhibits inside are definitely worth checking out too. Saw rough draft of the Declaration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson! History that I didn’t know we still had. Fun place!

This beautiful and infamous library has their main iconic reading room closed to the public, and part of that room is only accessible if you are going to do active research or came to study. Still very surreal being inside of the building, and walking around outside to admire the architecture. The shop is also a reader’s dream.

The library is open for the public. Since there are many tourists visiting, they have dedicated certain areas for research or quiet study purpose only. It’s a large library with plenty of seating areas. Overall, it’s very beautiful and just nearby the Grand Central Station and Empire State Building, so visitors can plan theses places together in their itinerary.

Very inclusive, positive experience here at the New York Public Library. We didn’t buy tickets however next time we will consider it. Despite it being busy it didn’t take long to get inside, and the building is absolutely iconic and gorgeous. They have done a fantastic job keeping the place in good condition, the art and architecture was absolutely stunning. They had cute little exhibits around the library about different famous artists, my favourite was the one about Dicken’s and they showcased some of his journals, books and even his reading glasses! My family was all captivated by different parts of the library, and overall it was a great experience. Highly suggest for tourists, the location is great and not far from Grand Central station and there is something there for everyone!

A public library that's located at the heart of New York City Manhattan, be prepared for basic bag search if you're entering with a backpack or a big bag. it's a very big library and I've only gone to the treasure area to view the historical items. In order to enter, you may simply input your personal information to get the ticket and then you may enter for free right away if there is no line up.

The library actually looks more like a museum than a library. Public are allowed to get inside until the entrance of the research room. There is another photo exhibition about the history of the NYC subway. The building has become a little festive since December, with a beautiful Christmas tree placed at the main door.

Crazy cool building! The art and architecture alone make it worthy of an hour if you are in the area. We caught an impressive exhibit of the library’s treasures that reminded us of similar historical item display at the British Library in London. Minus one star as they won’t let visitors into the main reading room.

Very cool to visit and walk around. The architecture is quite amazing to look at. This place is more museum than library. I didn’t see a lot of books. There was a gift shop with really nice gift options. We got a few things there. Also there was a room that really was like a museum (free to enter) with display cases of old books and antiques and art. Very cool.

What a stunning building!! A visit to this library has been on my To Do list for several years, and, finally, this week we went. The entrance is magnificent, and the hallways are super impressive. There are free audioguides available, through a QR code. The Treasures collection is astounding - the Gothenburg Bible, the original toys given to Christopher Robin, a handwritten page from The Secret Garden, paintings by Arthur Ransome, plans from the construction of the city and its bridges. A really astounding collection. The Rose Reading Room is only open to people doing quiet research, although they do 15 min tours they do 3 times a day, and anyone can go in between 10 and 11am. There was a tour going on when we were there, she was explaining about some of the artworks, I'm not sure how you get this tour.

So if your a Ghost Busters Fan or a lover of fine building architecture or just love to read this is a place to visit. The building is huge I side and is a marvel to look at. Please take some time out of your day to come and look around. It's free but I would leave a donation as this helps with the upkeep of this very important Land mark which has been the location of so many iconic american Movies Spider-Man 3 (2007) ... 13 Going on 30 (2004) ... The Day After Tomorrow (2004) ... Maid in Manhattan (2002) ... Spider-Man (2002) ... Finding Forrester (2000) ... The Thomas Crown Affair (1999) ... Quiz Show (1994) Breakfast At Tiffany's

LOVE it: a wonderful place to go. There is a genealogy room to the right hall way. I did my research here, mostly genealogy related, and the library itself, from the Astors... look for my up coming books -:) During the high tourist season, it can be trying. I'm cleaning up my phone: these pix were taken on Dec 7, 2021.

Not to be missed when visiting New York !! One of the most beautiful landmarks in New York, this 19 century building has a stunning architecture inside outside.Facing the Bryant Park, it’s free for tourists to visit ( not all the halls though). They also organize a free tour at 3 pm where you can enter the gorgeous hall with the wooden ceiling that is open for academics only.

Absolutely amazing library. If you're visiting with children or have reduced mobility, the accessible entrance is on the side (on the right when you're facing the main entrance) but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be indicated with a sign. The children's library is across the street (kitty corner) and is phenomenal. The main library exhibition can be visited even with young children because there's lots of people and noise - it's interesting for kids with Pooh Bear and historical items. Strollers and bags must be checked but it's free.

Absolutely beautiful and stunning. As a tourist there isn’t a ton to do aside from look at the exhibit and wander, but it is absolutely gorgeous in this building. There are research sections you can go to study or research. It is super crowded due to the holiday season. Be aware that there is a bag check as well.

Nice library. Great architecture. Somewhat crowded (tourist), so may not be ideal if you are looking for a quiet place (quiet rooms upstairs available). There is a gift store inside and they also have exhibit room with cool historic items on display, including the original Winnie the Pooh dolls and religious art works/books. Exhibit is free but you do need a ticket to enter the room (ticket available in the lobby area)

We loved the library!! It was absolutely breathtaking. Not only was it beautiful but it was clean and well secured. We actually went there to study, and we loved that they had security actually watching out for people studying or those people causing noise. The only thing you heard were the chairs moving when people arrived or left. This made it so much easier to study and concentrate. The bathrooms were clean, and there were several things to do inside the library. There was a beautiful exhibition of artifacts and so many things to see. There is little park to sit and relax next door and a Starbucks across the street. We absolutely loved our trip to the library!!

This is a "must see" building, it is made of wall to wall marble and is so very magnificent. I am very happy that we went inside this building because it is just breathtaking. We went to both floors, it may have a 3rd floor, I'm not certain. What we saw was enough. I highly recommend visiting this beautiful historical building in central Manhattan.

Beautiful architecture, excellent experience. The outdoor fountains are spectacular, the water during the heatwave was over 80 degrees. When you enter the doors you are greeted by the security staff, they are upbeat and pleasant and get the inspection over quickly. The ceilings, chandeliers and staircases are breathtaking, we visited the InterSect Exhibit and charged our cellphones in one of the many cool rooms filled with art. So many things to do and see, we ran out of time. I look forward to spending more time visiting this lovely library next time we are in the city.

Great art and architecture. Bryant park near by, there is an open space with tables just outside of library, nice place to have lunch and observe the probably New York’s busiest streets. Students and anyone who wanted to study will find this place absolutely wonderful. Beautiful, peaceful and big halls filled with computers, books and desks to study. There is security to make sure everyone is maintaining silence and tourists not taking pictures or videos

Amazingly impressive library, which is mostly a tourist attraction and museum. Definitely a recommendation to check out. Apart from the beautiful classic interior, the expositions are worth the wait. During my last visit, the study rooms were closed off for public due to coronavirus reasons, I'm sure this will be appreciated by the readers in the library. I had the pleasure to view the Polonsky Exhibition, which had some surprisingly interesting artifacts on display. There's a great atmosphere in the gift shop, which offers high-quality books and memorabilia while the staff is tremendously friendly and helpful!

Although free, daily guided tours are on a first come first serve basis. I was here late in the day and unable to see much. A tourist trap for sure, I’d imagine this is very annoying for those doing actual library research. The Rose Reading Room being the most impressive, is stunningly beautiful. Although no flash photography inside it is definitely an amazing place to take photos. I saw a few wedding sessions going down, all the best to the new couples ❤️. The citibike on 5th amd 40th I found super convenient when visiting.

A monumental building that is free to enter and see from the inside. Walking up the wide staircase where Carry Bradshaw waits in vain for Mr. Big in the film "Sex and the City" was something special for me. The ceiling paintings on the upper floor are particularly beautiful. Staying there is a welcome, quiet alternative to the loud city noise.

Once upon a time this was a fantastic library to visit, but now don’t waste your time. Not sure if it’s because of the holiday season but every other corner is closed off to the public, even the Rose Reading Room. There is mass amounts of people, lines in every door way. New York has lost its charm. If you want it the whole library to be closed off to public then put some signs up at the front door and only let students or New Yorkers in. Disappointing to say the least.

One of the planned stops was the NYC Public Library, as a tourist, it was worth the visit. As a tourist in NYC i stumbled with this building! I’m so glad I think because inside they had the most beautiful collection of historic pieces, like: the first bible ever screen printed, the original winnie the pooh toys, among others! You need around 45-60 minutes to really appreciate everything, obviously you can do it quicker. The entrance is free and there was also another shows in different floors!

Talk about the most exquisite library you’ve ever seen! This library is an enormous structure that is a beautiful sight in the New York landscape. As soon as you walk inside you are taken aback by the incredible interior decoration and high ceilings. Please note that this is a RESEARCH only library. This means you can NOT check out books or apply for library cards. There is an incredible exhibit that you can get free tickets for online. This exhibit has amazing artifacts to look at such as Gutenberg Bible, a handwritten copy of constitution by one of our Forefathers, Charles Dickens desk, and many more incredible items!

Was visiting NYC for a few days and decided to visit the New York Public Library. When entering, you are greeted by security staff that do a quick check/inspection before you enter. The library, both the exterior and interior, has very beautiful architecture. The ceilings were very admirable and were very unique with the designs and colours. There’s a lot of different exhibits that you can visit, you’ll definitely need a few hours to fully go through the library. It is free to visit, some tours have specific time slots (so be sure to check that out in advance). Definitely recommend checking this place out if you’re in New York!
