Not the best museum in New York. A great collection, but SO crowded and very little art in general, and none of it that interesting. We did go during the off-season, but I still wish there had been more stuff to look at. The most interesting part was The Barbarians exhibit on the first floor, which was very avant-garde. I would like to go again when they have better exhibits.

The Whitney was relatively crowded and only the top two floors were open. Overall, I felt that it was overpriced for the experience when compared to museums such as The Met or MoMa (both of which had far more pieces on display). The coffee was surprisingly good and the museum cafe was nice and airy. Additionally, the gift shop was excellent and had a variety of high quality, interesting books and items! The building itself had a lot of natural light and the interior was well designed. While I am glad that I had the experience, I was slightly disappointed given that I had heard great reviews and I hope that I can come again when there are more exhibits. I think that the Whitney is a worthwhile experience but I would definitely recommend prioritizing viewing other museums first. You can definitely view a much wider array of artwork at the MoMa or The Met and there are smaller museums that I feel are more worthwhile in terms of value.

This museum is really nice. It has a wonderful view of the city. Fun tip! Whitney museum has a donation night on Fridays. You just have to RSVP beforehand. Wonderful place for a date night or just hanging out with friends and wanted to check out some cool art. The museum has six floors about four of them have art displays. I will definitely be coming again.

One of the true gems on New York City’s, cultural scene, easy to spend a good half a day here. Since we live just a 10 minute walk away, we often stop in for their free Friday evenings. Those are only on the first Friday of the month I believe, and you have to reserve your tickets in advance to get an entry time. I love the permanent collection, there is always something interesting to see, and they have a lot of interesting works that are part of other exhibitions. There are some great terraces where you can get beautiful views of Greenwich Village, and parts of the city up north and big windows facing the Hudson river.

Just saw the two new exhibits, Jasper Johns and the American Painters 1900-1965. Both excellent. We always enjoy our visits to the Whitney. It’s a bright, spacious, well designed venue with some great rooftops and views of the lower east side. It’s also next to the entrance to the High Line. An added bonus. We give the museum and it’s exhibits five clams on the coveted Five Quahog Rating scale

Friday night at the Whitney museum with family and friends was amazing! Awesome art and media exhibits. We started on the top floor and worked our way down... loved that they have both indoor and outdoor spaces with amazing views of the city. We walked along the High Line to get there. It was a great experience! Definitely buy tickets in advance.

I saw the building from the Highline and wasn't impressed with the way it looked from the outside. But once inside, I experienced it quite differently. The way the building is divided is at once playful and smart. You go from small rooms to large halls, from dark and broody to bright and cheerful, from private to public exhibition spaces and those magnificent balconies with great views of the city. Your visit is yours to plan as you like. It flows naturally. You never have to look for a sign that tells you where to go next. Most people choose to start at the top and work their way down. But you don't need to. All in all, a great museum experience.

3rd time NYC and this was first time visiting Whitney and I regret that I didn't come earlier. Collection of this museum is very interesting and Edward Hooper exhibition was fantastic. I am going back on Saturday. Can't wait to spend more time here with great artworks.

Fantastic museum exhibiting American art. Much of it is of still living artists. The place is beautiful! The food options are excellent. There’s a bar with a great view! And the museum shop is very interesting with many beautiful unique items.

Loved pay what you want Friday! It wasn’t too crowded & we had a great time. The sunset was beautiful to see from the many outdoor exhibits. The museum layout is very straightforward and easy to follow. We spent a little over an hour at the museum. Definitely buy your tickets in advance because they were sold out when we got there.

We went on Friday during “pay what you wish” and I booked tickets in advance on Tuesday. We had around 2 hours to check all the floors which we did, but some places definitely need more time to actually look at the art. But I very enjoyed the museum, it has beautiful observation decks that you can see the city skyline.

The Jaune Quick to See Smith exhibit was massive, beautiful and very moving. She’s so prolific and talented. Her work makes you think. There were also many other well-known American artists on display. It was nice and cool in there, too! No line whatsoever at Thursday mid-day. Helpful staff. Buy an e-ticket online in advance from their website and get scanned in. Walk over to Tea & Sympathy afterward for authentic English tea and cakes (or lunch or dinner) - an institution in the neighborhood since the 1990s.

Every Friday the museum has free tickets and you just have to make sure you book a head of time. you can arrive 15minutes early. There is free coat/ bag check on the lower level which is really nice. The place was so lit with music and drink for purchase. There was alot of people though. If you want a quiet museum experience, Friday night might not be for you. I think it was better that way for me since I don't think modern art is for me but I wanted to explore it. I think the layout of the museum is very nice and I like how there are tours listed if you want to join in on one it is free as well. I love the balcony more than the exhibit itself.

The Whitney Museum of American Art, or just The Whitney, is a contemporary art museum in New York City. It was founded in 1930 by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, a sculptor and art patron, who wanted to showcase the work of living American artists. The museum has a permanent collection of over 25,000 works of art usually shown on the 7th floor. They also organizes the Whitney Biennial, which will open this March '24. It is a prestigious exhibition of emerging artists. The museum in the Meatpacking District with amazing restaurants.

The best art museum in New York! Thought provoking modern / contemporary art. Sometimes exhibits are overtly political, but they always evoke powerful emotions. The talent and techniques of the artists are sublime. Rotating galleries and exhibits ensure that visiting a few times a year will bring a fresh experience on every trip! Art here is reminiscent of work at festivals like Coachella or what you might find at Art Basel. And the city views from the outside staircases are magnificent, especially at night. Can’t wait to go back again!

Amazing exhibit of Jasper Johns work. Companion exhibit in Philadelphia is very different. Fun to see how each museum choose to exhibit his work. Eric, on staff here and shown in photo, was exceptionally well-versed in Johns' work and showed us hidden treats in the work. He has a be pin on his tie - when you go here you must ask him about the story behind this and Whitney Museum. Highly recommend seeing this exhibit.

One of the undisputable top ten museums in NYC. I'm taking one star off for the people who works there, some were super unfriendly, and some were super chatty. The two female staff talked had a nonstop loud conversion throughout my visit, and I could hear them from the entire seventh floor.

I don’t know anything about arts. I did not study it in college. But I like to go to museums because I feel peaceful there. It’s like meditation in public. This museum did the same for me. The inside/outside exhibits remind me of MoMA. Listening to the info on each art piece through your phone was awesome. There was a wine/beer bar too. The staff was helpful. The gift shop had cool stuff and books about the artists. It was a well spent rainy day.

We were able to get a reservation for Pay as you wish. It was a perfect end to our Friday night in the city. The Hurricane exhibit is really phenomenal. The staff were kind and attentive but not overly helpful. There were no maps available and we only saw exhibits in the sixth and seventh floor. I expected there to be more artwork but what they had was exciting. We were able to watch the sunset from the large windows and from the outdoor decks!

As someone who has been to a few museums, I really appreciated how "modern-era" the works were. From a traversal standpoint, it's far more vertical, so you're not really walking around each floor for really long stretches trying to find everything and getting lost. Lot of smaller floors versus two or three acres of land on three floors

The Whitney, in its excellent new location, was a delight to visit. They are doing a great job making it safe and I felt very comfortable. The "Vida Americana" exhibition is not to be missed and is deeply enriched with videos and lectures on the Whitney's website. I have been so impressed by the Whitney's response to the pandemic (with online access to its collections while closed and a wonderful free lecture series called "Art History from Home" delivered by their Fellows, a group of dynamic young scholars) that I bought a dual membership. I felt very fortunate to visit in person. Get there while you can and luxuriate in the outstanding curatorial vision and roomy surroundings.

American art in a beautiful space Full of light and high ceilings, Unlike the old place With its dark airless feeling. The neighborhood's vibrant, In a hip, low rise way. Nothing like the East Side. Walk the Highline? You decide. Or the pier; less congested, most days. I'd just bike it, a Citibike dock's right nearby; We go often, that way, my partner and I… We're members; it's worth it supporting museums. Preview invites are cool, when we have time to see them. Flash your card: VIP in the tiniest way. The Whitney's a great place to spend half a day.

Not the most kid friendly museum in NYC. If you have kids younger than 10 years old I definitely would not go here yet. The staff do not appreciate kids! As a long time member and now with kids, it’s a little annoying. The art is good. They do a good job ensuring COVID-19 safety protocols. The highlights are the outdoor spaces. Great views! This has become a NYC icon. The area has really gotten affected by COVID. I would have given a 5 star but the workers are a bit intense and uptight and the lack of family friendly space. Click the thumbs up if you agree this is not a family friendly location.

We went on Friday evening and had a wonderful time. It wasn't too crowded and the museum has an amazing view of the city. We ate at the bar on the top floor, and the average cocktail was like $15 but they're so well made that they're worth it. Lovely aesthetics throughout and an easy interesting tour. I also like that the Museum showcases art that also discusses alot of socioeconomic issues - very diverse and informative. I would definitely go back again!

It was nice to see great art works right at the Meatpacking District. The museum building is amazing inside and out. If you like modern furniture you can experience it outside on the balconies. There were different exhibits on each floor like the Jasper Johns Exhibit. I especially like the My Barbarian on the first floor.

Note that I did use my NYU ID and got a free ticket. I arrived around 1pm and there were not a lot of people. No lines and the museum was not crowded. I just discovered there’s a beautiful outdoor area looking out to Manhattan at different levels. The museum is kinda small but had interesting pieces, enough for an art noob like me to appreciate.

I had an outstanding time exploring the Whitney Museum of American Art! This cutting-edge museum showcases some of the finest contemporary and modern American art I've ever seen. Located in the vibrant Meatpacking District, the building itself is a bold architectural statement that sets the tone for the dynamic exhibitions inside. As I wandered through the galleries, I was captivated by the diverse array of works, from innovative paintings and thought-provoking sculptures to engaging multimedia installations. The museum does a stellar job of showcasing both established and up-and-coming artists, celebrating the spirit of creativity and artistic expression. The staff was knowledgeable, approachable, and eager to share insights on the various exhibitions. I also appreciated the stunning views of the city from the outdoor terraces – a perfect spot to take a break and soak in the Manhattan skyline. The Whitney Museum of American Art is a must-visit for art enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. 10/10, an unforgettable experience that will leave you inspired and hungry for more!

Mostly love this architecturally striking museum. Inside it is airy & it's large viewing areas preclude overcrowding. The permanent collection has some of my favorite all time pieces. The top floor special exhibition this past week was incredibly thought provoking. And the outside deck on that floor has, as always, wonderful NYC views. The only thing I was unhappy with was that the other viewing floors were closed, as well as their decks & the lovely restaurant. The museum's location is also great, right at the beginning of the Highline.

Not sure why it took me so long to visit here as an adult. I did not finish making my way around the museum so I will surely come back. There's an area where they have glass ceilings and I was just taken away. They should have used that area for their dining. Imagine the sunset while you're eating. Phew 😌. Anyways, go. It pays what you can for New Yorkers.

Two floors were under renovation when I went (but thats just bad timing for me), but the entry price was still the same? (Less art, should be less fee). Aside from that, the contents that I did get to see were astounding. Aside from that, there are large external courtyards on the 6/7th floors with incredible panoramic views of NYC. Great place for Instagram moments.

Beautiful exterior design, with many different exhibits to be seen. Honestly, I would visit Whitney again just to enjoy the rooftop view, bc it was simply breathtaking during sunset (and it was free). The exhibits were interesting since it revolves mostly around American arts (Native American art, pop art, etc). The 8th floor is reserved for special exhibit, so I imagine it changes time to time.

The museum displays art in the way that makes people want to discuss what's going on in the community. It's a pleasure to be there especially if you're single and you would like to mingle. It's a nice place just to look at all year round one of the best museums I have ever seen in the sites are spectacular. Please I encourage all New Yorkers to come visit the museum and you will be surprised at the Tranquility. That museum is like no other place how do I say only in New York amazing

Extensive collection in a minimalist setting. Some art needs too much explanation and context to be enjoyable for my tastes, but I respect that the Whitney is indeed a grand institution, and for good reason. Plus the High Line goes all the way there, and you can combine your visit with Chelsea Market easily.

Got to catch Edward Hopper's New York exhibition and absolutely loved it. Was hoping to see Nighthawks but found that it is still in Chicago. Lots of other great Hopper pieces, still. The special feature of this stunning museum is an outdoor staircase that invites you to step outside between floors, giving your mind a brief respite from the overwhelming brilliance on display in the inside. There is a cafe in the top floor and the ground floor. Definitely to be included in any tourists visit to NYC. New Yorkers should try to go at least once a year!

I definitely enjoyed my visit to the museum. There are different levels accessible by elevator or stairs and everything is well organized. There is a little cafe downstairs that seems to be overpriced, as well as a giftstore that I really liked. The rooftop access is a plus, to experience the new york views and for photos. I recommend visiting if you are looking for another museum to go to.

Located in the Meat packing District, right at the southern starting point/end of the High Line, the Whitney Museum is a beautiful contemporary art museum focusing on American art. It’s easy to navigate the exhibitions on the different floors and just the permanent collection is worth the visit. The views of the city and Hudson River from the terrasses are beautiful too. We’ve come multiple time with our children at weekend, it’s normally quiet if you come when the museum opens. The price per adult is $25 which is not cheap but there are options to pay less (pay what you want on Fridays and different annual memberships/discount cards such as Cool Culture pass, etc.). The the first New York retrospective of Jaune Quick-to-See Smith (currently on) is beautiful and very powerful!

The Whitney is one of my favorite museums in the city. The building itself is beautiful and the top floors have terraces that are perfect for taking in the sights of the meat packing district and beyond. I usually time my visits with exhibits that interest me but I went on a whim the other day and they were in the process of setting up new exhibits so several floors were closed. That was a bit of a bummer. Good reminder to see what’s on before arriving. The permanent collection is great on its own though and still made the visit worthwhile.

How to plan the perfect day in 2020: Step 1 - Book reservations for The Whitney. Spend 2-3 hours here and see Vida Americana. WOW. Step 2 - Book reservations for The High Line following your visit. (FREE). Plan to walk and enjoy The High Line for about an hour. Be sure to look up around 20th St to get a good glimpse of The Edge. During my visit, I watched 2 helicopters capture THe Weekend's VMA performance. WILD. Follow the path and exit at the Vessel on 30th. Step 3 - Book a reservation to The Vessel (FREE). Climb to the top and enjoy the majesty of our city.

I have been a member of the Whitney Museum for many years and was pleased to see the great job the entire staff ensured to make this Museum a safe place to go during the Covid Pandemic. The system they use to manage elevators needs adjusting. It's an 8 story building.

  • 5/5 Andrew P. 3 years ago on Google
They've done a great job of making this a safe place to go during Covid. Temp checks at the door. Limited attendance. Staff is quite engaged in preventing any lack of social distancing. The elevators are run "Sabbath style," stopping on every floor. Each elevator holds only four people in designated white spots in the corners, and one of them is the elevator operator. The operator will enforce those spots diligently. Even the gift shop is strictly monitored, with lines and a staff member enforcing them, with the fridge for their seltzer locked. And of course, the art is spectacular.

Visiting the relatively new Whitney (it's been in its original location in the meatpacking district for a few years now) provides you with a comprehensive overview of American art. I particularly like the vast permanent collection with highlights from every period of American art. Check out the gallery with George Tooker’s moody painting ”Subway.” Every straphanger will relate. Also, Jay Defeo’s ”The Rose” — a bulging work of layered paint and mesh that the artist created over many years resembles something like a cross between an altarpiece and a flower blooming. When I visited, there was a cool exhibit on street photography produced by the Kamoinge group. And I loved loved loved the installation ”Kitchen” by Liza Lou. And there's an incredible exhibition on the intersection between art in the United States and Mexico. Check out how the curators position Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo together. Also — tickets should be purchased in advance. Expect to wear a mask and get your temperature checked. There are no crowds. And you feel like you have space to yourself — that is, until restrictions eventually lift and tourists return (pending a vaccine or a miracle). One weird outcome of the pandemic is that New Yorkers can reclaim their cultural institutions. So get it while you can (but still uphold safety precautions and physical distancing).

I paid a recent visit to the Museum and enjoyed the experience. It was busy but not overly crowded and there was plenty of space for everyone. The exhibitions were really interesting and it turned out to be a great idea for a Saturday afternoon. And its close proximity to the Highline, train and Meatpacking District places to eat are all bonuses. And if you go, the outdoor roof view is a must. I'll definitely be back.

I wholeheartedly recommend the Whitney to any art - most specifically, modern art - lover. I was able to explore a few museums in NY due to my corporate discounts and this place was by far my favorite. The building itself is beyond gorgeous. I am a sucker for architecture and this place is just stunning. We came here on a Friday night at around 4:30. There is coat check down the stairs but we opted just to carry our things around with us as the line was forever long. We started at the very top and worked our way down. There are various exhibits, my favorite was the immersion exhibits. Art is interpretive, art is weird, art is crazy. That's what makes it so enjoyable. Each floor highlights a different style of art or artist but the collections have seem to have a sense of cohesiveness with each other as well. The place is clean, bright, and the exhibits laid out beautifully. Definitely come here and check it out.

Great collection! A little lacking during the pandemic, but did a great job at setting capacity and time allotted entrance. Looked like there might be more to see in March/April

  • 5/5 Glenn P. 3 years ago on Google
The Whitney is focused on American art primarily of the last hundred years. There is a permanent collection on one floor and special exhibits are on the other floors. This is the first museum I visited in New York City since the beginning of the pandemic in March. They were very well organized with tickets to enter at certain times. The bathrooms were really spotless and didn't seem like much of a risk to use. The elevators were marked with places where people should stand. Rather than having people pushing buttons for the elevators one of the museum guards would call for the elevator to come to a certain floor thereby avoiding everyone pushing the elevator button over and over again and giving each other their germs. There were many beautiful pieces of art of course. I skipped the Lichtenstein geometry pieces. My wife greatly enjoyed the colors and varieties in the exhibit on crafts. The exhibit of Mexican muralists and their contemporaries was excellent and they have a number of murals by Thomas Hart Benton who is one of my favorites. Patrons were all in masks and keeping appropriate distance

My husband, brother and I went to the Whitney Museum. We had a great time. The Whitney followed covid protocols. My man’s favorite art was the circus/acrobat display with the video, the was the original “Tik Toc”. My brother liked the embroidered kitchen art. I wish they had more than 3 floors open.

Absolutely great place to explore American arts. Compared to European countries, American arts definitely has much shorter history but it becomes more and more of a center of modern even post modern arts. The arts will be more post 1900‘s. Also it is a very nice neighborhood with Chelsea market, lots of cafe, restaurants and boutique shops for a nice weekend day plan. I don’t want to include so many pictures to spill all the excitement. Welcomed to come and check it out!!

The museum featured a Jasper Johns retrospective as well as the Whitney's own collection, all of which was outstanding. I like the museum, it's modern, comfortable and has an open air feel to it. I also had a great turkey club in the Cafe.

Finally made it here. The building is cool and it had a few exhibits I really appreciated, including one part of the biennial that was an immersion to the blm protests which opened my eyes. Not sure I'd rank this higher than some of the other contemporary museums in the city but still worthy of a visit

So thrilled that the always amazing Whitney Biennial coincided with our outbound travel. Start at the top, and use the outdoor stairs to walk down. Some of my favorite pieces were on display, but the highlight this time was Alexander Calder's wire circus, on display with a repeating video of him performing. Love the Whitney, and kids under 18 are free. Jump on the Highline right outside the door and enjoy that urban treasure when you are done, too.

Lovely coffee with latte art from La Marzocco, kind, attentive staff with lots of smiles, some sweets and desserts available on the menu, beautiful, captivating art and sturdy modern architecture, awe inspiring terrace with jaw dropping view of NYC and Hudson River/Statue of Liberty. Strongly recommend, two thumbs up! ; ) Totally not pretentious, cool place to be with a chill vibe and welcoming atmosphere!

Excellent, although somewhat small museum featuring American art. I was there for the Edward Hopper exposition which was wonderful. The rest of the museum was pale in comparison. Has a nice terrace and outside areas featuring a good view of Hudson River and the NYC on the other side of the building.

Out of all the museums I've been to in NYC this museum had the most engaging staff. It was nice to learn more about the art from several staff members. Additionally, the presentation of the art and collection was impressive. Would go back, and want to soon. One of my favorite museum experiences.

Amazing collection, Josh Kline’s exhibition was very striking, especially the way he depicts the blue collars in US. This artist is only 44. Thanks thousand times for such an inspiring and creative way of expressing yourself.

I’ve visited this museum twice on a whim without knowing which artist was being exhibited and was amazed each time. The museum does a great job at bringing in exciting artists whose art has you truly think. I also found staff very friendly and helpful and their seasoned nut snacks taste great. Look forward to coming again.

Visited for the Josh Kline exhibit which is incredibly moving and thought provoking. Had a drink at Studio Bar on the 8th floor (the Daily Grind - recommend!) and then visited the museum. Clean, cool and well staffed. Had a lovely time

The art inside was beautiful! My favorite part was on the seventh floor, there was a puppet circus show. It reminds me a lot of the museum of moving image. I wasn’t able to view all the floors due to the fifth being in preparation for a new exhibit. I would recommend going on a weekday weekends tend be packed and the crowds give you very little time to think about the pieces. Honorable mention: you can see David Hammons’ days end from the 6th floor window

  • 5/5 Mekayah L. 5 months ago on Google
I had the experience of seeing Henry Taylor’s B-Side exhibit at the Whitney. It was absolutely amazing. I went with friends, it was a bit busy but it was the weekend. Would recommend a weekday to visit.

I loved the variety of art-genres they were in the museum, very calm and well placed. The terrace has amazing views and some sculptures in there. I went around 5:00 p.m, they weren’t any line, so I didn’t had to wait, the inside wasn’t crowded at all, they were very few people and made the place more calm and pleasant to stay.
